This movie was awful. Really, really, awful.

But I'm kinda glad I watched it. Amazing that it was directed by the man who brought us LA Confidential, a movie that won two Oscars. I wonder how Curtis Hanson feels about it now?

It's worth seeing just for Spinnell's bizarre performance. He spends the whole movie in denim overalls and his southern accent comes in and out. Sometimes he speaks in falsetto for no apparant reason and he has a greasy child molester vibe about him throughout the movie, especially when he's carrying that girl he abducted (and hides in an old abandoned mine) around on his shoulders.

This movie also features a gang of bikers lead by a Samuel L. Jackson lookalike named Donnie Williams (who appeared in Enter The Dragon) who help out the karate kids. The moral of the story? When the shit hits the fan, you can depend on biker gangs to help you out.

How Ann Sothern wound up in this is anyone's guess but it was made towards the end of her career. Pat Johnson from Enter The Dragon and Good Guys Wear Black plays the karate instructor. The dude who plays the grandfather, Charles Lane, was in all sorts of wacky stuff including The Beverly Hillbillies (which explains an odd reference to that series made in the movie). He also has a small role in It's A Wonderful Life.

Widely available at a dollar store near you, East West paired this one up with the amazingly bad Kung Fu Kids Break Away.

This movie has a really weird cast.

I thought Kung Fu Kids Break Away would surely be the winner of the two but Karate Kids USA was definitely the more watchable. Funny how random people show up in both though!

And how both films have a Bruce Lee connection!
