View Full Version : Pictures Of Stuff I See On The Way To/From Work

OK, so since we switched offices from a Brooklyn location to a Manhattan location, I no longer drive to work and now take the subway ever day. I decided yesterday that I sometimes see odd/interesting stuff during my commutes each day and I figured I should start taking crummy camera phone pictures of it just for the sake of doing so.

So yeah, here's a subway.

18232

Sometimes at night on the above ground station platforms you wind up with kind of nice views of the skyline.

18233

Also, often times, now that the weather is nicer, I pass this guy. Usually I don't see him in the mornings, he keeps his performances to mid/later afternoon or early evening but this morning the early riser was out there doing his thing. He likes to dance in traffic and yell at people. I'm not sure what his deal is. He sometimes yells at people about gay rights and sometimes he just makes strange bird noises. He's a pretty flamboyant fellow. I kind of like that he's always around and I'm honestly worried that one day he's going to get smacked by a cab driver or something.

18234

Usually he's much more decorated than he is today. Brighter colors and lots of accessories. Today he was a bit more restrained.

I love this thread. New York is my number 1 place to live. Moving is not an option for me unfortunately, hell even holidaying isn't an option, but this thread gives a sense of what it's like wandering the streets that you don't get in any of the hundreds of tv shows and movies that are shot here.

Ian Jane
04-03-2019, 08:33 AM
I keep meaning to take more pictures for this thread and spacing on it. I'll make a point of updating it, especially now that the weather is nicer and I'm walking around more.

I'm far from an expert on NYC, but I think that you're pretty lucky to live in a borough like Queens. There's still a lot of great stuff there. People always ask me if I saw some something or other in Manhattan when I've visited, and seem surprised that Manhattan isn't big on the list of places I head to when I'm there. My last trip to Brooklyn wasn't that impressive either. I think that Queens is the coolest borough, The Bronx is tops for keeping it real, and I still haven't been to Staten Island.

Anyway, yeah, more pictures.

Ian Jane
04-03-2019, 09:21 AM
Staten Island is a weird mix of urban decay, suburbia, mafia mansions and strip malls. Very unlike the rest of the city.

And Queens is the best!

Ian Jane
04-04-2019, 02:36 PM
Alright, just for Dom and Mark.

First up... the big damn post office in Manhattan, open 365 days a year, 24/7. It's an entire city block. It's pretty neat inside, though they could clean it up a bit.

22254

22255

After that? A weird door that leads to two very different businesses upstairs - one that sells spy equipment and one that will teach you how to pole dance. Oh, and there's an Asian massage parlor up there as well I think.

22256

Lastly, for today, one that I thought was funny. This is a neat old RC Church around the corner from the office. On the side they have a little shop/welcome center with a quaint prayer garden on the top. It's genuinely nice and a peaceful little reprieve in a very loud, busy part of the city. I guess now they're selling ad space on the side wall, which I don't recall seeing there before... and they're selling it to a casino, haha.

I've walked past this neat old building hundreds of times in the last few years since our office moved to Manhattan and didn't realize until this morning its historical significance. Frequently it smells like piss because homeless, junkies and winos tend to congregate on the steps and sleep around it and the barred windows make it kind of ominous looking but it is the last remaining structure from the original Penn Station.

There's a neat article on it here with some background information and pictures of the interior.

Also, I had to walk up Broadway a few blocks to run and errand for work this afternoon and I passed this. This is the legendary Wakamba. Good things happen here. Only good thing (not including the odd stabbing).

The first time I was there it was full of mosquitoes and smelled of urine.

The second time I was there was before I got married and things were fuzzy, but I remember Ian Miller dug it, because denim.

I've been there once or twice since and they've cleaned it up but it's still right in the middle of the dirty thirties on 8th Ave so it's going to attract some sleaze - and it still does.

Some of these reviews are gold.

Since I'm not actually going to work I've been making a point of going for walks in my neighborhood on my lunch break while working from home, just so I don't go nuts.

So here are some things I saw in my neighborhood this week.

24586

Those cats wanted nothing to do with me. I have a bat habit of trying to befriend cats when I see them wandering around, knowing full well they're probably try and bite me and give me rabies, but whatever, I like animals and cats are funny. These ones, though... they just wanted me to fuck off so they could get back to sitting there. There were 3 others out of frame. That's a lot of cats for one house, and I suspect the owner may be crazy.
