After 20 years since the first crap film came out we finally get a remake/reboot. R rated and I'm going to assume the tone will be similar to the brilliant animated show.

The animated series was great. The movie... now. He's gonna write and direct? That'll be interesting.

I grew up with the comic (started around issue 50 and read up until around 120 or so) and I believe the animated series is the best interpretation of Spawn and his world. It removes nearly all of the BS in 90's comics at the time like pointless tie-ins, Rob Liefeld shit, toyetic garbage, and etc.

The way Mcfarlane has described the movie makes me imagine it being very similar to the show. Sam and Twitch were a major element throughout the show and especially in season 1 and 3.

I read the first 30-40 issues as they came out and then lost interest in it, but yeah, the animated series was really good. If he can capture that vibe I'd give it a shot.

The first 100 issues were pretty good. There's some hit and misses there but Greg Capullo's art just suited the character so much better than Mcfarlane. It was Capullo who really pushed for Spawn to be depicted in the shadows like a vampire. And that's something the cartoon just ran with and nailed perfectly.

If indeed the film is going to resemble the show, be adult minded and McFarlane has total control then this is one comic book movie I'll rush to the theater to see. I'm still sour about HBO cancelling the show after the third season right in the middle of a storyline. You know, a part of me wants the new film to be animated.

The mother of all cliffhangers. Mcfarlane has said in interviews that he wants to bring the show back too. He tried back in 05 but was unsuccessful in getting funding to complete the animation:

It gets a little confusing because Mcfarlane has stated multiple times that the voice acting is done. And it does have Keith David back to voice Spawn. Plus it has Mark Hamill and interestingly enough Michael Jai White voicing a character. But the animation never got started. So, if the show comes back (depending on if this movie is a success) I wonder if he's just going to go back to these old voice recordings or do the whole thing over again?

With how much of the important world-building and how many of the key characters are now off-limits due to MacFarlane’s dickery, I am really not condfident in a new movie being anything that makes any kind of sense. Cagliostro, Medieval Spawn and Angela are all off-limits now, Angela is actually Marvel these days.

Oh wow. I knew he was interested in bringing it back, and I remember reading him saying that at one point HBO might have even been interested but that's the first time I've seen that video.

Yeah, I'm really pulling for the show to come back. At least for one season or animated movie to wrap up that cliffhanger.

Also, Mcfarlane has not so subtly hinted at Jamie Foxx playing Spawn. Good choice I think.

And I think Mcfarlane will either (A) focus most of the movie on Sam and Twitch revolving around what Spawn is doing which won't involve Cogliostro. (B) We will see an unnamed character assuming the role of Cogliostro. Or (C) Mcfarlane will pay Gaiman enough to use the character again.

Probably the only way Gaiman would ever consider letting MacFarlane use Cagliostro again would be if He actually followed through on his broken promise to give the rights to Miracleman to Gaiman and Alan Moore, which I don’t see happening, if the way he dragged his feet on paying the court-mandated back pay and damages to them is any indication. Honestly, I could see Gaiman just telling him to go hump his hat because Todd needs Cagliostro a lot more than Gaiman needs to ever deal with Todd’s bullshit again.

Marvel got the rights back for Miracleman a while a go.

That’s good to hear, I didn’t know about it yet. MacFarlane is still scum.

Good. I appreciate that he's self-funding. I always appreciate the rich that put their money where their mouth is.

Prepare for a new wave of Spawn toys.

New figures are at Toys R Us, but they aren’t anything impressive. Maybe this movie will inspire some interesting ones. And maybe this time they won’t make plain Spawn a fucking chase figure again.

I found this interesting:

It looks like Mcfarlane may have worked something out with Gaiman for the Cogliostro character.
