So for the longest time Metzger's films were treated pretty poorly on home video. VHS was not kind to him and while DVD at least gave us letterboxed transfers, many of them were subpar.

This all seemed to change when VXP released the Maraschino Cherry special edition and Synapse put out The Image. Now Blu-ray is starting to roll and for some reason Metzger's stuff seems to be experiencing new life - not that I'm complinaing, the guy made some GREAT movies, but it's surprising to me that we've got The Image, Lickerish Quarter and Score on Blu-ray already with Cult Epics releasing a few more and now VXP dabbling in high def Henry Paris territory. Some of these have even got commentary tracks from the man himself.

It's a good time to be a Radley Metzger fan.

Are there any others out there? I guess I appreciate the way his 'smut' makes you think. Yeah, he definitely falls into the exploitation and porn categories just based on the material he was dealing with but his stuff really does take arthouse/XXX to a new level. Damiano tried a few times but Metzger was definitely more successful at it. He somehow managed to coax really strong and brave performances out of his cast and the production values were top notch.

So yeah, Metzger is awesome. His films are sexy and smart and dude made some great movies.

I liked Score. Haven't seen The Image yet but people have been telling me for years that I'd dig it. Lickerish Quartet too... I remember having that on my GreenCine queue but never getting around to it.

The Image is fantastic, just not kid friendly so it'll wait :)

Steve posted a still from a deleted scene from The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann here (http://distribpixblog.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/henry-paris-pamela-mann-behind-the-scenes-of-a-deleted-scene/).

The Lickerish Quartet transfer is super sweet.

Have you guys (Ian and Alison) seen CAMILLE 2000 yet? You'll seriously dig it, but wait for the Cult Epics release, if it's still a go.

Alison Jane

Isn't that like a futuristic (2000, haha) thing? I seem to recall a cover...

Ian Miller

You would think so, but it's more like a kinky Euro drama, 60's-style. Lots of that era's futurism/modernity, though. Great music, too.

Ian Jane

I've seen it but it's been at least a decade since the one and only time I've watched it. I'm content to wait for the CE Blu-ray, it's not too far off now. They've been doing a very nice job so far with his titles so I have high hopes for that one.

I think they have some Tinto Brass in the HD pipeline too...

Alison Jane

Ooooh... which titles?

Is there a Tinto Brass thread? If not there should be!

I can't believe it, Lickerish Quartet comes out on BR and I didn't even know!! Took about 40 seconds to order upon reading this thread with sweat is pouring off my forehead. I'll be phucked!!

Looks poops-rad!

Bummer to have to get rid of my NAKED CAME THE STRANGER and PRIVATE AFTERNOON OF PAMELA MANN discs since they both have pretty decent commentaries, but I don't like keeping multiple copies of movies around, especially when one release is so vastly superior to the previous one. Those old discs are cut to shit, and look like ass.

Anyone know if Cult Epics will do the other titles in the Metzger's softcore catalog?

More here at the Distribpix Blog (http://distribpixblog.wordpress.com/). Don't have full extras yet, but there will be another Metger/Benson Hurst commentary which, if it's half as good as their last one, will be awesome.

Arrow Video: The Lickerish Quartet
Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD - £14.99
Cat No: FCD727

Released: 11 Feb 2013

Starring: Silvana Venturelli, Frank Wolff and Erika Remberg
Directed by: Radley Metzger
Rating: 18

Overview: A mind-bending classic of erotic cinema, The Lickerish Quartet brings us a rich jaded couple and their grown-up son - bored after a night watching pornography - visiting a travelling stunt show, the star of which is bears a striking similarity to the woman in the sex film they just saw. Invited back to the castle for a drink, she soon becomes embroiled in a night of bizarre carnality, fantasy fulfilment and highly charged love games.

Hailing from a time when erotic cinema was embraced by the mainstream, The Lickerish Quartet is a dream-like fantasy of liberated love and questing eroticism which blurs the boundaries between staid reality and the surreal realms of unbridled sexual fantasy.

Directed by the groundbreaking sometime pornographer Radley Metzger, The Lickerish Quartet takes us back in time to an era when nudity was a novelty and sexual explicitness felt like a revolution...

It really is fabulous to see these three being released in the UK. I wonder how Score will fare with the BBFC though. I notice there's no mention of it being uncut in the specifications.

Are Naked Came The Stranger, Maraschino Cherry, or The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann OOP? I've been dragging my feet waiting for Blu-ray announcements but now I'm starting to worry I may not be able to get them in SD or HD without paying a fortune. Are they going to get released on blu-ray anytime soon?

None are OOP. Steven had to shut his Amazon store for a week because he's going out of town, but ALL of the Paris titles are readily in print. BARBARA will be coming in the next couple months, probably.

As for blus of the SD releases, it's not impossible that they'll be reissued as such in the future, but right now they are DVD only.

John do you know if Steven will release something else between The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig and Barbara Broadcast? I doubt it as you wrote it will be release in a couple of months, but asking cost nothing...

Does anyone know who holds the rights to the rest of Metzger's catalog? We got excellent releases of Score, Camille 2000 and Lickerish Quartet from Cult Epics, (and The Image from Synapse) and of course Distribpix is doing the lord's work with the Paris titles. But what about the rest? Carmen Baby? Therese and Isabelle? Princess and the Call Girl? Mother? Alley Cats?

I know there were those Metzger boxes several years ago, but those were mediocre releases at best, and are now OOP to boot. It would be great to hear that the rights were now in the hands of somebody who was gonna do something with them...

Jimmy Simard

My first guess would be that Metzger (Audubon Films) owns them and sadly no labels had shown interest or the price is too high...

Too bad because I want to see his early works, but after I got Score (the first version) I was not interested to pay the high price asked for the boxset when they were available back in 2006, as you wrote the quality was so-so for that price.

Edit:
Amazon Canada had one set in stock (last copy) if someone is interested (http://www.amazon.ca/Metzger-Silvana-Venturelli/dp/B0007NMKWQ/ref=sr_1_5?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1365566021&sr=1-5&keywords=Radley+Metzger). It's that one

They have some individual movie too (like the set it's the last copy available).

- The Dirty Girls
- The Alley Cats
- Therese and Isabelle

Very nice, but already own all the Paris films, as many do including the two blu-rays. Disappointing that Maraschino HD release is still not imminent, and looks unlikely for a while now, what with this release. I'm also very curious as to what's happening with Through the looking glass and Wanda whips wall street.

More on the set...

"Since 2010, Distribpix Inc. has been working very hard to restore the films of the legendary filmmaker Radley Metzger. More specifically, the 5 X-rated films that he created using the alias Henry Paris. These 5 films, were all created in a span of about 2 years, and released from 1974-1979.They were produced during the climax of the porn-chic movement in NYC, and after 30 plus years, these films have not only stood the test of time, but continue to be sought after by legions of film fans, in both the mainstream and alternative cinema circles.

All 5 of the Henry Paris films are now available in single DVD versions. Each DVD contains the full- uncut feature, the film’s theatrical trailer and a slideshow/ephemera gallery of images. Also available in a limited, hand-numbered, and very attractive 5 Pack Collector's Set, with a Bonus 4x6 Collectible Magnet. The Box Set is limited to 500 units, numbered 1-500....."

Contemplated picking the Maraschino Cherry release up, as it's also available individually I think on Steven's website. However, I'm sure there is enough demand for this to be released on blu, with Naked and Pamela Mann so don't want to pick this up for it to be released on blu further down the line as I already own the older 2 disc special edition dvd.

I might be wrong, but wasn't there another Henry Paris porn film besides the 5 Distribpix has already released? Something like Tiffany or something I forget the title, but it had the word Tiffany in the title? Or am I totally wrong on this?

Tales of Tiffany Lust? Looks like he may have shot some of it but it is listed under Gerard Kikone's name.

That's it Tales Of Tiffany Lust, I thought Henry Paris had made that film, I guess I was wrong. I have not seen it for a long time, From what I remember of it it seemed very similar to the Herny Paris films though.

Both THE TALE OF TIFFANY LUST and APHRODESIA'S DIARY were made by Metzger's company Audubon Films. With both films, actors who appeared in them say that they only dealt with Metzger and never saw Kikone at all. So they both appear to have been, at least partialy directed by Metzger. I know that in TIFFANY there's at least one scene that is a direct copy of a scene from an earlier Kikoine film, so I doubt they were completely by Metzger but he obviously did direct substantial parts of them.

Tales of Tiffany Lust was a great movie from what I remember, and it should be released on dvd or blu ray in a good quality version. I had Vanessa Del Rio in a hot gangbang scene, she seemed to end up in a lot of those. I am very happy with my older release of Maraschino Cherry and don't think I will buy the new copy though, not as long as it's just dvd and not a blu ray release, there are just too many movies out there to get, to go and buy a movie that I already have that is a very good quality version already.
