So Mike recommended Nightmare in the Severin thread and also touched on this one:

http://www.umbrellaent.com.au/content/images/TitlePV/DAVID2258_pv.jpeg

Which I know absolutely nothing about but which I am now intrigued by based solely on the goofy cover art alone.

With that said, I think it's pretty awesome that Australian drive-in and exploitation movies seem to have made a bit of a come back in popularity over the years. The documentary that came out a couple of years ago was a great primer and probably helped a lot, while getting some Mad Max on Blu-ray and seeing both Synapse and Severin dip their toes into the waters with a few different releases helped with exposure.

Brian Trenchard Smith's output alone is reason enough to celebrate - Stunt Rock will always be a personal favorite even if it has its detractors while Escape 2000 and Dead End Drive In is rad. I just got BMX Bandits on Blu-ray and am keen to check that out.

Mad Dog Morgan is another unsung classic. Troma's DVD wasn't the definitive edition it should have been but that doesn't take away from how fucking awesome that movie is.

Dig it.

You can move my other posts across here if you like? Just call me King of Off Topic! :b

As to Mad Dog Morgan -- have you thought about buying the Aussie Special Edition DVD? It has all this stuff on it:

*To Shoot a Mad Dog: Making of Mad Dog Morgan documentary - 23 Mins
*Dennis Hopper interviewed by Philippe Mora - 30 Mins
*Audio Commentary by Director Philippe Mora
*Radio Interview from 1976. Philippe Mora talks about Mad Dog Morgan - 14 mins
*Mad Dog Morgan script PDF
*Mad Dog Morgan programme - PDF
*Stills Gallery
*Mad Dog Morgan Film Excerts x 16

...and is Philippe Mora's director's cut as well as 16:9 to boot! It looks like this...

We need a special edition BD of MAN FROM HONG KONG.

Also, if you liked Stunt Rock and crazy Aussie stuntman Grant Page, you might want to check out Deathcheaters...

http://cdn.madman.com.au/images/slicks/very-large/mma2719.png

http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/view/11251/deathcheaters

It's also directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith, and comes with bonus film Danger Freaks! Danger Freaks was a TV series down here where Page basically did lunatic stunts and showed how they were done - it was essential TV when I was a little guy. The bonus film is the feature film version of the series. :)

Here's the theme from Alvin Purple, by Brian Cadd (I tried to find a trailer, but they've all been edited for sex and nudity on YouTube...wowsers):

Oh, what the hell...here's the "edited for YouTube" versions of the trailers:

I have Deathcheaters on VHS! I didn't even know it was on DVD. I should probably get that and Mad Dog Morgan too. Could unload the Troma one to offest the cost.

Is ezydvd the best online Oz based retailer?

Is ezydvd the best online Oz based retailer?

Best one I know of that ships overseas, at least. There's a couple of others...but I wouldn't recommend them (a lot of Aussie online retailers have very poor business models, sadly)

LOL! ALVIN PURPLE was one of the first films I ever saw in the drive-in! My parents took me, all I remember is the scene where he's working as a window cleaner!

The Umbrella version of MAD DOG MORGAN is still the best version available. All that Aussie drek is available for under 10bucks down here, nobody buys it, and we have these clearance joints that sell them for peanuts, like those crummy porn video joints in the lower east side in New York.

There was an SE of MAN FROM HONG KONG released early last decade, it is OOP?

I've got the R3 disc which was pretty good but doesn't the Aussie MFHK have more extras?

Either way, it'd be nice to upgrade that one to BD. Once I get back from a mini-trip later this month I'll have to order some of these Madman discs.

Btw, I'll do some digging for you lads -- as back in the late 80s CBS-Fox Home Video released a bunch of low budget Aussie genre films that, to the best of my knowledge, haven't had decent releases (if at all) on a digital medium since. Best of them was a little film called Vicious (aka: To Make a Killing), which was very much in the vein of Last House/House on the Edge of the Park and took a belting with the censors here.

You all may also want to try and check out Fair Game (1986); remember the clips in NQH of a topless bird strapped to the front of a 4WD? This is the film...

God I love Australia.

Just be mindful we don't make films like that anymore, though I quite enjoyed the recent SNOWTOWN movie, but it's more indi-shmindi bummer-art movie than over-the-top camp exploitation dreck.

I thought CHOPPER was closer to the 'old school' Aussie type rah-rah.

Mike T

Just be mindful we don't make films like that anymore...

Believe it or not, we actually still do...we just don't see them here anymore! There seems to be this little cottage industry of genre films being made in Oz over the last few years that can't get a look it at local cinemas or garner a DVD/BD release, but are being sold internationally and doing well! :wtf:

We've had small indie items like The Dinner Party, Acolytes, Storage and Slaughtered, and more modestly budgeted fare like Dark Water, Storm Warning, The Loved Ones, Primal, The Reef, Road Train, Long Weekend and others all seeing release in the US and UK (some getting theatrical, others straight to DVD). So yes, we're still making genre movies...they're just not seeing the light of day in Oz!

Umbrella are chucking that one out cheap (http://www.umbrellaent.com.au/p-2277-abc-of-love-and-sex-australia-after-dark-double-feature.aspx) at the moment! I believe they ship overseas as well. They're not real good at replying to emails though... :p

I am amazed! Dead Kids, Harlequin and Thirst all appear to be OOP locally now! Looks like, when I have some cashola, that I'm going to have to resort to importing Don May's (well reviewed) discs on the Synapse label! It's a strange day when you have to go the option of importing Australian films into Australia from overseas, just to have copies. :drum:

Ian Jane
06-09-2011, 08:51 AM
The Synapse discs are all pretty nice, improvements over the Elite issues from a few years back (my only point of reference as I haven't seen the Aussie discs).

Mike T
06-09-2011, 10:48 AM
The Aussie discs are probably NTSC-PAL standards conversions, as I know Umbrella's Road Games disc was. It's a bad time to be poor, as Deep Discount are throwing out the Synapse discs for $11ea. after their current 25% discount. Luckily I have until the 19th to conjure up the cash...hmm, do they still buy kidneys on the black market?

Mike T
06-11-2011, 03:09 AM
Got a bit of an update from Umbrella concerning the OOP discs: the contracts have expired and they no longer hold rights to the titles I noted "appeared" to be OOP. That includes Oz as well.

However, Harlequin is still available in the Ozploitation Vol. 1 boxset. Sex comedy Pacific Banana, with Graeme Blundell of Alvin Purple fame, is also gone. That'll teach me not to buy stuff when it's available and cheap! Fool...

Ian Jane
06-11-2011, 09:35 AM
A lot of times when places start blowing stuff out cheap, it's a sign that stuff is going OOP.

Mike T

A lot of times when places start blowing stuff out cheap, it's a sign that stuff is going OOP.

Often, yes. But with the amount of regular sales they do down here across the board across multiple retailers, sometimes it's hard to know if that's the case...or if items are just "on sale". Maybe I could get Aaron the G to keep an eye out at that discount place he mentioned and see if he can turn up a copy of Pacific Banana?

So like in the end of Turkey Shoot they have some F-111 bombers taking off, which turn into Mirage III fighter jets in mid air. Wtf is up with that? Is that meant to be, or is it just real lazyness with the stock footage?

Mike T
08-27-2011, 04:47 AM
As Trenchard said in interviews: they had a million dollars slashed from the budget, when one of the investors pulled out, as the film was starting shooting. Steve Railsback, in Mark Hartley's Not Quite Hollywood documentary, also alleged that the producers spent more time betting at racecourses than overseeing production. Thus, I guess it was just a case of assembling what they could out of what they could afford to licence with the money that was left in post. Of all the people I've seen interviewed, apart from Roger Ward and Michael Craig, no-one is particularly proud of the film -- and even more mystified at its cult following. I mean, I love it, as it's Oz' only real splatter film...but each to their own.

The Silly Swede
08-27-2011, 06:00 AM
So cheapness eh? Besides, whom is suprised at the producers trying to get more money at the races. Had they been a bit better in picking the winners the film might have been the Titanic of its time ;)

Mike T

Cool - that'll be another Umbrella disc to look out for...in the five dollar shops. Seriously, I'm not sure what the deal is with them and Shock. They sell directly, and through regular retailers, at full retail as listed on their sites. But then, you walk into any cheap-arse discount-bin store (you all know the type, the ones that sell cheap shelving, basic furniture, knick-knacks, cheapo kids toys and other associated literal junk) in Oz and there in the DVD stalls are ALWAYS loads of Umbrella and Shock discs for $5ea. It's truly a weird business model...
