OK, so as Mike mentioned in the Arrow Maniac Cop thread, Synapse has also got the title lined up for Blu, along with Frankenhooker and The Exterminator. This is awesome in every way awesome is possible.

They've also got Frathouse Massacre coming out in August which I know nothing about. And more HD Hammer in the works.

Covers!

I've really got to get to and support Don's label in a big way! As I've already mentioned, he's the only one with the handful of Aussie cult classics that I want (now that they've all gone OOP down here), and they've still got some of the Panikhouse stuff as well as some cool Japanese stuff on their own label. Plus, there's Impulse too...

Ian Jane
06-14-2011, 11:33 AM
I'm anxious for those Impulse pink films to hit.

Thundercrack too. Though I'd imagine there's probably a lot of work involved in getting that transfer up to snuff.

Mike T
06-14-2011, 11:40 AM
That's right! Don and Jerry have licenced a bunch of Pink Eigas! I forgot about that -- those would be cool too! Oh my shrieking bank account... :sosad:

PS: They shoud have used The Exterminator's tagline that they used down here: "If you're lying...I'll be back!" (RIP, Mr. Ginty)

Ian Jane

Don just sent this out via his Twitter feed....

I don't know much about the movie but I'm guessing it's this one here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448128/).

Mike T

Haha! I am a happy camper! I read somewhere recently that Don located the original Dolby stereo tracks for The Exterminator. We all finally get to hear the damn thing in stereo, at last, after years of pissy mono. And lossless too.

Fango's got some good info on some upcoming releases here (http://fangoria.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5234:dracula-and-more-coffin-joe-coming-from-synapse&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=167).

Countess Dracula on Blu-ray and more Coffin Joe (reissues of At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul and This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse - no word on format, fingers crossed for Blu-ray).

Spoke to Don May, jr., and he said, regarding RED SCORPION, it will be a longer cut; NO commetary with Dolph, just an interview; and some other surprises, of which he wouldn't name. I like RED SCORPION.

Paul L
09-01-2011, 06:19 PM
I do too. I wanted to call my son Dolph, after Lundgren, but the missus wouldn't have it - not even as a middle name. {Sad face.} I've been waiting for a satisfactory release of RED SCORPION for a long time. I'm looking forward to the Synapse release.

Shawn Francis

RED SCORPION will be a DVD/Blu-Ray Comb. Tom Savini is working with them to provide some extras.

Speaking of Patty Mullen, here's some images from her Penthouse shoot...

Patty Mullen @ The Scandy Factory (http://www.scandyfactory.com/2008/10/wanna-date.html) (very NSFW, obviously!)

...must say, I was pretty impressed with those pics as you get to see her outside of all that makeup. ;)

Ian Jane
09-27-2011, 08:40 AM
Yeah, she looks much better without scars and bolts sticking out of her ;)

Mike T
09-27-2011, 08:44 AM
Yeah, she looks much better without scars and bolts sticking out of her ;)

Showing her scar's a bit full-on though, yeah? ;) (Nah, not really...God bless her, and God bless America for pornography!)

Ian Jane
09-27-2011, 10:07 AM
If you've got it, flaunt it.

Mike T
09-27-2011, 10:08 AM
To be perfectly sexist, I must say that her boobs look better in the photoshoot than they did in the film. Must've been the grey-ish makeup

Ian Jane
09-27-2011, 10:16 AM
Agreed. Dead looking boobs are rarely as attractive as live ones.

So with Synapse having released Maniac Cop and Frankenhooker - are there other Shapiro Glickenhaus projects in the works? We'd talked about this earleir but I'd love to see McBain and The Soldier get the Synapse HD treatment.

Mike T
09-27-2011, 10:24 AM
The Soldier is the one I'll keep my fingers crossed for! And, like The Exterminator, here's hoping they turn up the original Dolby stereo track again (having heard the original mix, it's nothing special but it brings out Tangerine Dream's score better than the mono mix did).

Mike T
09-27-2011, 10:26 AM
Agreed. Dead looking boobs are rarely as attractive as live ones.

So that was YOU at the morgue comparing notes! I thought the guy looked familiar...

Um, yeah...Patty Mullen and James Lorinz were pretty damn funny in Frankenhooker, hey?

Jimmy Simard

Seriously I never saw it but that seems to be a cool movie, it's the James Glickenhaus film right?

While I don't speak for everyone here, I never really saw the appeal in the film (it was released DTV in Oz). Always thought of it as a low-budget Rambo with Chris Walken subbing for Stallone...

Which is precisely the appeal :)

Ian Jane

So it looks like there was some validity to my speculation after all. Inside the new Intruder Blu-ray is a Synapse 2012 catalogue. It lists all the titles that they've put out so far (for both the Synapse and Impulse lines) and on the last page there's a list of 'coming soon' items, some of which have been announced and some of which have not:

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul
Basket Case 3
Chiller (TV Series)
Countesss Dracula
42nd St. Forever Vol. 6
Gurozuka
Hammer House Of Horror (TV Series)
Hands Of The Ripper
The Intruder
I Want To Be A Gangster
The Life And Death Of A Porno Gang
McBain
Nikkatsu Roman Porno Collection
The Odd Angry Shot
Red Scorpion
Schoolgirl Report 8 - 13
Slaughter Of The Innocents
This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse
Thou Shall Not Kill... Except
Twins Of Evil
The Violent Shit Collection
And More!

So yeah, Don't obviously got some interesting stuff up his sleeves for the new year, McBain being just one of the titles (glad I didn't pull the trigger on the Arrow release).

Ian Jane

Word on the upcoming release of Red Scorpion (and why you might want to wait for it rather than get one of the import Blu releases):

http://synapse-films.com/news/news-about-our-release-of-red-scorpion/
With all the news about the various upcoming international releases of RED SCORPION on Blu-ray (UK, France, Germany, etc.), I just wanted to take a few moments to let you know what's happening with our version, which should be announced soon.

We've been working on our release of RED SCORPION for almost a year now. We want ours to be the best version available in any country, on any format, and we have been taking our time putting together the ultimate version of the film for our audience. Not only in compiling some amazing supplements, but also working on a restoration of the original materials to make ours the best looking version released.

Here is a breakdown of some of the features of our RED SCORPION release:

- All-new 2K transfer of the uncensored edition, containing additional footage not found in the original U.S. theatrical release
- Digital restoration of film materials supervised by Synapse Films and Reliance Mediaworks (formerly Lowry Digital), exclusive to Synapse Films
- All-new DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround Mix, made specifically for the Synapse Films release
- Digitally Remastered Original 2.0 Soundtrack.
- Synapse Films exclusive audio commentary with director Joseph Zito, moderated by Mondo Digital's Nathaniel Thompson
- HATH NO FURY - DOLPH LUNDGREN AND THE ROAD TO RED SCORPION - Video Interview with Dolph Lundgren
- ASSIGNMENT: AFRICA - An All-New Video Interview with Producer Jack Abramoff
- SCORPION TALES - An All-New Video Interview with Special Make-Up Effects Creator Tom Savini
- Original On-Set Behind-the-Scenes Video Footage
- Animated Still Gallery
- Extensive Liner Notes on the Making of RED SCORPION by Jérémie Damoiseau...and the list of extras is growing daily... we're still working on some other things to add!

And, yeah, you read that right up there... we DID get Jack Abramoff. I know a lot of people made some jokes about getting him to do something for us while he was in prison. Well, we just waited for him to get OUT... and he agreed to give us an interview. It's a really cool thing and Jack was a great guy.

We worked closely with two companies to help us with extras for our release. Both RED SHIRT PICTURES and BALLYHOO MOTION PICTURES have put together some GREAT stuff. And a big congratulations goes to Tom Savini who not only gave us an interview, but raided his footage archive to give us some great behind-the-scenes "on the set" footage that no one has seen in 14 years. And big thanks to Dolph Lundgren for allowing us into his home for a great retrospective/interview about his career.

RED SCORPION is also being digitally restored by the same folks who did the Indiana Jones films, Once Upon a Time in the West, the Godfather Trilogy, The Alien films and, most recently, the all-new 4K 3D restoration on TITANTIC. We are thrilled to be working with them on this, as well as many future releases for Synapse Films.

Our release is going to be superb, not to mention a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, so you get both formats in one package.

We're going to announce it in the coming weeks. Remember the old saying... "Good things come to those who wait!"

Don just posted a really long news item about Thou Shall Not Kill... Except and why it's being delayed.

I'd rather they delay this and do it right, which is just what they're doing.

Ian Jane
02-27-2012, 11:57 AM
Probably some trailers.

Todd Jordan

Probably. Thanks, dink. See, I rely on this place for my DVD/BD news, so I expect details form posts like this one.

Barry M
02-27-2012, 12:56 PM
I hope it's an omnibus combo multi-layered parfait containing all the trailers from the DVDs. All of them. Every one.

I mean, how likely is it that even Synapse would be able to swing/justify HD remastering of these? I'd be happy if it were just filled to the brim with the standard def versions from the original disks (which I think I only ever bought one of, sorry).

Ian Jane
02-27-2012, 01:16 PM
I honestly don't know the exact contents, I don't think Don has released those details yet. There is going to be a new commentary on it though, I know that much.

Todd Jordan
02-27-2012, 01:50 PM
Hopefully different ones will be on there. Unlike Azz, I've purchased all of them. I don't mind some repeats though. Do you know who is doing the commentary? Do you know anything?

Barry M
02-27-2012, 01:54 PM
I bet he did the commentary, but didn't watch anything while recording it.

Ian Jane
02-27-2012, 02:01 PM
I seem to remember hearing the commentary will be Edwin Samuelson, Chris Poggiali and Mike Gingold but I'm not positive if that changed or not. I think the disc will be a re-release of the 1st one (which didn't have a commentary) with a bunch of new stuff added to it. I'm going off of my memory here though and not anything I've seen Don say, so don't quote me on any of this.

Todd Jordan
02-27-2012, 02:11 PM

I WANT TO BE A GANGSTER and directed by Olivier Chateau, is a psychological confinement/survival saga about a low-level crook (Julien Courbey) who aspires to rise through the criminal ranks but makes a deadly mistake and winds up chained to a tree, left to die with no food or water, and confronts predators both human and animal. Don 'Big Tease' May Jr. just posted this on Facebook:

"You know, I'm in a REALLY great mood today. Knowing what I know now, and the giant release(s) bomb that Synapse is about to drop, I have to do everything in my power to not just blurt out the names of a couple awesome titles we just acquired. Don mentioned on Facebook this morning that Synapse will be releasing DEMONS in 2013 on Blu-ray.

He noted: "Just so you know... we will also be correcting the incorrect black levels and the botched day-for-night shots that have plagued other versions. Other things, too. More info as we go along..." and he also notes that "perhaps there will be multiple audio tracks."

When asked about DEMONS 2, he said 'perhaps.'

Honestly, not too interested in another release of Demons. Now, a release of Michele Soavi's The Church with commentary and maybe unearthing the 20 or so minutes of lost footage would be interesting.

It is hard to imagine that Synapse wont be an improvement on Arrow's godawful Tenebrae Blu (http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?&art=magnify&x=365&y=215&action=1&image=6&cID=1481&cap1=18266&cap2=18276&gamma=&lossless=1#vergleich)

Actually TENEBRAE is a huge deal for anyone with a decent a/v setup. I'm not a huge Argento guy but this is far and away my favorite of his films. The DVDs have never looked all that good and Arrow's Blu Ray is a disgrace. The French Blu had a great transfer but forced subs and was prohibitively expensive even when it was in print and ridiculously priced now.

PHENOMENON had a pretty lackluster Arrow Blu too so I'm all over that one as well. The DEMONS flicks are rare non-fuckups from the house that Callum built so I may skip those depending on the extras.

Derrick King
01-29-2013, 03:13 AM
According to Don, there are some fuck ups on the Arrow DEMONS blus: weak black levels and some day-for-nights that aren't properly color timed. And, I'm pretty sure I've read complaints about the audio on the first film and the encode of the second film.

Horace Cordier
01-29-2013, 01:11 PM
Fair enough - though I will say I haven't heard a lot of serious complaints about the Arrow DEMONS as opposed to some of their more infamous screwups.

My problem is while I love the idea of Arrow, the execution of Arrow is often a huge problem. From crap transfers to boneheaded debacles like the whole initial BEYOND pressing and the involvement of dubious individuals like Callum and High Rising's endless animated intros (done by ahem Callum's girlfriend) lets just say my relationship with the company is problematical.

So it's caveat emptor all the way here. Reviews read first and screenshots checked - twice.

But Synapse? Never let me down yet. I preorder with confidence. So I'll probably buy Don May's DEMON Blus as well - I like giving his company money.

Some details on the extras for Demons here (http://www.fangoria.com/index.php/home/all-news/1-latest-news/8483-exclusive-detailspics-new-demons-discs-bonus-features).

"Calum Waddell of High Rising Productions, who’s producing those extras, let us know what to look forward to: “We have some really meaty stuff—lengthy interviews and in-depth personality profiles,” he tells Fango. “The kind of material that we hope people expect from High Rising by now! We have brand new interviews on DEMONS with Lamberto Bava, Dario Argento, stuntman Ottaviano Dell’Acqua, Alan Jones, the worldwide authority on all things Argento-related, and Luigi Cozzi, who contextualizes the DEMONS films and speaks about the unofficial sequels—including how his own movie THE BLACK CAT ended up as DEMONS 6 in some territories! For DEMONS 2, we have Lamberto again, composer Simon Boswell, assistant director Roy Bava, effects maestro Sergio Stivaletti and Federico Zampaglione, the new blood of Italian horror [director of SHADOW and the upcoming TULPA], chatting about DEMONS and how it has inspired him."

They haven't said who is doing the special features on TENEBRAE and PHENOMENA, so you guys that have issues with High Rising Production may avoid them on those two.

Seems Don is interested in picking up THE CARD PLAYER and TRAUMA, so hopefully he is able to get them.

Terry C

I probably won't avoid them regardless of whose doing the extras. I guess I used the word 'major' but I'll take it back and say it's not that huge of a deal in the scheme of things.

Good to hear about Trauma though, I actually like think that one is pretty good and is apart of Dario's last bastion of good films (granted I've yet to see SS).

Derrick King

I'm interested primarily in the movies and since Synapse's transfers are overwhelmingly excellent I'll be picking most of these up. Seeing some classic Argento finally done right is irresistible.

Kentai's Films (http://www.kentaiblog.com/2013/02/demonic-phenomena.html) has contacted Don about what he is using for the Argento titles and basically, for DEMONS and DEMONS 2 they are using the scans done for Arrows Blus, but they are fixing the black levels, day-for-night and other color timing errors and for TENEBRAE and PHENOMENA they will use the masters that Wild Side used. The PHENOMENA master was supervised by Argento and Albani, but it is the 110 minute version, as that is Argento's preferred version (Synapse will have access to Arrow's 116 minute elements as well but there are audio issues and they haven't decided what to do.)

Hard copy media lovers like me will still buy when they want - my guess is this appeals to folks who don't buy Blu rays and DVDs anyway.

I just got a roku and really like it so I'll give the Synapse channel a shot.

I'll be dumping the Warner Archive channel though - its been a disappointment.

How many people that are aware of Synapse Films do you suppose "don't buy Blu rays and DVDs"? I can't imagine it's very many. The type of consumer that wants to see Bacchanales Sexuelles more than likely wants to have it sitting on their shelf. This streaming service is about Synapse having a regular and predictable revenue stream along with not having to take the risk of printing thousands of discs that may not sell. Good for Synapse, and not so good for collectors.

I'm not looking forward to the days when even the small labels are streaming only and they have Netflix-esque purges of their library.

Derek Steckler
05-15-2013, 06:05 PM
Jason I agree with you in why Synapse is doing this, they told me something similar. However considering the dvd/blu-ray market right now it makes sense, and it's not necessarily all bad. There's nothing I'd like better than for my film to get a nice blu-ray release but it's just unlikely in today's market. If Synapse didn't have this service they would probably have rejected it - they'd need to sell thousands of discs to just break even, and that would be a risky gamble. I could've just put it on Amazon as a self released DVD-R but who would even know it exists? This way someone can pay a few bucks for the channel, watch the films they came for, and maybe watch my film just because it's there and it sounds interesting. If they like it and want to keep it they can buy a DVD-R, if not well it hardly cost them anything. If it turns out people really like it and it's getting tons of views maybe Synapse will decide to put it out on disc. The main thing is, they're still putting out Blu-Rays and DVDs, and now they have this way of putting out other films they like that might not have the commercial potential of films by more established directors. Considering the market it's a win/win situation as far as I'm concerned.

Horace Cordier
05-15-2013, 06:32 PM
And let's also keep in mind that not everybody has a roku or access to streaming services (our very own Ian Jane doesn't stream) and that whatever Synapse is showing isn't going to have any extras. Finally people still even buy stuff like THE TWILIGHT ZONE on Blu ray even though its been streaming for years.

Derek Steckler
05-15-2013, 08:08 PM
Yes that's why streaming can be considered a preview for people undecided about buying a disc. If they like the film and want to keep it, plus watch extras they couldn't see otherwise, they can buy at on DVD or at least DVD-R. It's also a good response to all the illegal downloading going on - this is very cheap to watch but at least the rights holders are getting something.

Jimmy Simard
05-15-2013, 09:17 PM
... at least the rights holders are getting something.
Ask to the small labels owners if they were happy to get nickel and dime from Netflix... If Synapse want to kill themselves by doing this I couldn't care less, almost nothing they release these days interest me anyway (except for the Impulse sub-label stuff they play safe and boring). I wouldn't watch something like Thou Shalt Not Kill or Document of the Dead or Intruder or Street Trash even if my life would depend on watching them.

In fact they have release nothing that special since The Life and Death of a Porno Gang a year ago... The Hammer film doesn't really count as they aren't big risk to take so it's playing safe again (anyway it isn't costly since the masters are from MGM).

Horace Cordier
05-15-2013, 09:43 PM
I love Synapse. And Scorpion. And Code Red. It's not a competition - they all have done films I love. I don't really get all this infighting.

And I'm not into companies going out of business either. I'm happy to support all these guys.

Jimmy Simard
05-15-2013, 10:45 PM
I just think they doesn't really release worthy anymore those days for me that's all, as I wrote except for the Impulse sub-label they haven't release something that really made me say "I must have it" in a while. Of course every taste are different, wich is why life is so interesting

Also I don't like the fact they feel like trashing the other labels works every now and them just like they did again when Demon was announced some time ago. It's not like they were perfect...

Derrick King
06-13-2013, 11:14 PM
I've got the hardcore version and it isn't appealing at all, but it isn't meant to be. Other than the special features, I don't think you'll miss anything if you opt for the shorter version.

Ignatius
06-14-2013, 02:43 AM
I believe the yellow cover version misses out the eyeball piercing shot as well, though I can't imagine you'd miss that either. Personally I can't imagine watching it without the hardcore, the appallingly grimy and unpleasant nature of the film is the really interesting thing about it, but if the idea of it is really off-putting to you then the short version is probably the way to go.

Something extraordinary happened today. A day I really never though would come. Let me explain.

Around 20 years ago, when I first started in this business, I never dreamed I would have the opportunity to work on so many horror/cult classics. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, DAWN OF THE DEAD, LEMORA, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 1-3, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 1 & 2, EVIL DEAD 2, STREET TRASH, INTRUDER, THUNDERCRACK!, RE-ANIMATOR, THE STEPFORD WIVES, PROM NIGHT, BRAIN DAMAGE, FRANKENHOOKER, CURTAINS, TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD, BLUE SUNSHINE, DEMONS, DEMONS 2, PHENOMENA, TENEBRE, all those HAMMER classics … Just a small selection of the many films I’ve helped release on home video (some listed above are still to come, of course) in one form or another with the two companies I’ve owned.

I grew up on these films, and it is a huge honor that I’ve been able to work on them all before I either quit the business or dropped dead (probably from exhaustion caused by actually working on said films). But there are still a few films on my “bucket list” that I’ve always wanted to work on that I haven’t been able to for one reason (money) or another (stingy studios). My “dream” films. Many others I really wanted to work on slipped right through my fingers even though we started working on them: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 & 5 (The license expired too quickly and we only got out the first three. But we tried. Hard.), MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE (I don’t even remember why that failed to get finished), and WILD AT HEART (After a huge amount of pre-production, phone calls and element searches with David Lynch and his office), too. The film license was left to die after I left Elite Entertainment, I guess. We even made an ad for it! Then there was the huge DVD life-project I started with Clive Barker around 10 years ago, when we discovered the “NIGHTBREED: CABAL CUT” VHS tape in a random box at his place. Clive was a saint, and I loved visiting when he was covered head to toe in paint, but his agents stuck a fork in all our great plans. Maybe another day, Clive.

But, there is ONE particular film that, since I took that risky, all-or-nothing head-first dive into the home video biz, I’ve always wanted to do and it’s always been out of reach. I’ve met and talked with the director over the years about it, but was never able to get it. But, we got a lead not long ago, and pursued it immediately. There was a small bit of hope.

I was working on DEMONS at home when my business partner, Jerry Chandler, called me with the news. I pick up my phone and he says in his non-reactive, calm, easygoing tone that he always tries to fool me with (but it never works), “Just wanted to let you know, we got the signed contract today. Just throwing that out there, in case you needed to get some good news this morning.” I was sitting on my couch and I just hung up the phone and stared at the floor for a few minutes trying to absorb what I’d just heard. I couldn’t believe it. I have to admit I got a bit misty eyed, too.

Getting this film has been quite a few stressful months in the making. As a matter of fact, knowing that there was really only a slight chance we could get it, we had to let a few other titles slip through our fingers that we wanted. We were in the running for NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, WITCHBOARD and one other film that we know went to Scream Factory. I won’t spill the beans on what that one is. I’ll let SF announce it when they are ready. Truth is, with my bucket list film as a possibility for Synapse, we just didn’t want to put a lot of money towards these other three films. We didn’t offer a lot of money for them because we knew getting this one film was much more important to me. We couldn’t really have afforded larger advances on those other three films, and then this one too (contrary to what some folks would like you to believe, we are a struggling indie company… we aren’t loaded with money, and we have to be smart about how we spend it). We gambled that we would get it, held our breath, and let the other three films slip away… All three films went to Scream Factory, but the film we wanted wasn’t locked up yet. It wasn't a sure thing. I was torn, anxious… almost devastated that we lost the three and started to believe we’d never get the one we gave them up for. This ONE film was more important to me than anything else on the table and I thought we’d made a horrible mistake.

But, then it came to us. The agreement was in.

Now, at this point you are probably like… “Don, what the fuck? Tell us what it is already.” I will eventually, but not today. WAY too much planning, scanning and work await me on this one before I’m comfortable with talking more about what we’re doing. I just had to get this off my chest tonight. I needed to shout out to the world that dreams do come true sometimes. Sometimes. And for me, today was that day.

So I sit here, in awe of what just went down at Synapse Films. I’m stunned, ecstatic, shaking… not exactly sure if I believe what happened, even though I know it did. We got it. Twenty years… and it’s finally mine. Twenty long, hopeful, wishful, mother fucking years! I have never been more proud to be in the home video business than I am right now.

Any guesses?

2 guesses...

1. Dawn of the Dead
2. Suspiria

Suspiria was my guess too but now that I think about it, Dawn might be it. I can't imagine Scream went after Day and not Dawn.

Same as Ian, Scott and Ben, Suspiria. Will certainly be a limited release because of the high cost of acquisition (certainly more than Demon and Demon 2). but in that case it won't bother me at all to pay the high price tag.

I don't think Don would be that excited if that was Phantasm or Dawn of the Dead (it's probably the other film Shout got the right to). Also italian film are costly to get, american film not so much.

Derrick King

I was thinking MARTIN (I looked up an old interview with Don and in it he mentioned that he'd love to do MARTIN). MARTIN and DAWN are owned by the same company, so I thought that there was a good chance that they'd be licensed together in a three film package (with THE NIGHT FLIER being the third film), but maybe not.

Don specifically lists having worked on DAWN in the past, so it doesn't make any sense that it would be the one film that he has always wanted to work on but hasn't been able to. My main guess is SUSPIRIA, but he also mentions having met with the director about it, which makes PHANTASM perhaps somewhat more likely for that detail. If it's PHANTASM, I'll be bummed. It's a fun little movie, but really, it's a very minor work, especially when compared to SUSPIRIA. I re-watched PHANTASM recently and, unfortunately, I don't think it holds up well.

As for DAWN, let's not forget that Elite put it out on laserdisc back in 1996, produced by Don back when he was still with that company. DAWN can be ruled out.

That Elite LD was a fantastic piece of work, Ian, with both the Cannes cut and the Argento edit, and as I recall a commentary on one of the cuts. A friend of mine had it; I couldn't afford it, and had to make do with VHS dupes of the Cannes cut and the Argento cut (neither of which were available in the UK at the time) and another VHS tape recording of the commentary track.

I believe Elite also released the Cannes cut on its own (marketed as a 'director's cut'). This is the artwork for the latter:

Edited to add: the Japanese Gaga Collection LD had both the Cannes and Argento cuts of DAWN... too, didn't it? Come to think of it, I believe the VHS dupe I had of the Argento cut came not from the Elite LD but the Gaga disc and had, after the film, an interview with Romero by some very, erm, enthusiastic (obsessive?) Japanese fellas.

That would explain why my VHS dupe of the Argento cut was from the Japanese Gaga LD whilst the other stuff (the Cannes cut and commentary) was taken from the Elite LD ;) I knew there must have been a reason for that. Hard to believe that was almost 20 years ago now.

Don offered a little update on TENEBRAE and PHENOMENA

With TENEBRAE and PHENOMENA, we were given the supposedly "great" restorations that were performed by Wild Side France. In my opinion, they aren't so great, but the licensor has not been coorperative in allowing us access to use different materials. I have inquired, more than once, to no answer at all. So, we have to make our releases from the masters received. While the presentations are arguably the "best" they've looked, they certainly aren't representative of what "I" would've done, if given the chance. I just have to make the best of what we have, and for TENEBRAE and PHENOMENA, this is going to take a little time.

This is disappointing, but I'm sure Don will do as good a job with these as is possible. Hopefully he doesn't run into the same issues with Suspiria.

Given they will have already shelled out for the licensing rights I'm sure they don't really have any choice but to press on ahead. Having seen the extent they went to with the problematic elements for DEMONS I'm sure they'll wring the best possible transfers out of the materials they have to work with. How good that is remains to be seen, but given the uneven history of Argento films on Blu-Ray I'm their releases will be comparatively top tier.

SUSPIRIA is a whole other kettle of fish. I assume the disastrous colour on the currently circulating master can only be corrected up to a point, and a whole new scan is probably the only way to really do it properly. Still, Synapse is one of only a few companies that would pull out all the stops to get it right.

I haven't seen Wild Side's PHENOMENA, but their TENEBRE (and Arrow's rereleased version, based on the same master as the Wild Side disc) is pretty solid. There's room for improvement, but I'd hazard to think most region 'A' locked people who haven't seen the Wild Side/remastered Arrow discs yet will be happy with the Wild Side transfer when Synapse finally release it.

I agree. It also pays to keep in mind that Don May Jr is METICULOUS about av and restoration in general. Which is fantastic.

It also means that to the average viewer the Wild Side version looks pretty strong. I'm confident that despite Don's frustration the Synapse version will be stellar.

I have Arrows Tenebrae and bloody 'ell if Don May wants to get better than that then Its going to look amazing as that transfer is beyond solid. To be honest though I cant see many problems with Arrows Phenomena transfer wise. Its just the audio, and even that doesn't bother me.

He said they are pretty much stuck using the Wild Side masters:

Well, unless someone else has an uncut 35mm IP or original negative laying around in the USA, there's not much hope of getting access to something else.

As for SUSPIRIA, he posted this a couple of weeks ago:

As far as SUSPIRIA goes, we haven't started anything yet... there's that pesky little problem of Technicolor Rome closing up at the end of 2013 that put a damper on things.

Don is teasing a new title on facebook

Today is one of those days where I only WISH I could tell you what movie I'm working on, because many of you will flip your shit when you find out. But, the director has asked that we remain mum about naming/announcing the title for a few weeks. I'm working on it now and it's fucking awesome. 2015 is shaping up to be insane for Synapse... I've never seen this movie look like this (actually NO ONE has, really)... More to come soon because I like to tease.

In the Synapse article they spell Tenebrae as Tenebre. I've never understood the change of the spelling when for years until it hit dvd it still had the letter a in the title. It's even in the opening credits of the actual film. Petty, I know.

It depends on which version of the film you watch. Sometimes, the title card in the film says TENEBRE, which was the spelling for the Italian release: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_reviews_66/tenebre_blu-ray.htm. This isn't something that Anchor Bay or Synapse made up; the film was advertised as TENEBRE in Italy.

Phenomena update:

Working on PHENOMENA today. Don May and his team are working on rebuilding the 116 min Italian/English hybrid version. Instead of just repeating music sections to make them fit, we are building using Italian track, English track, incomplete CREEPERS DMEs and original CDs to make the mix work better than the existing versions of the hybrid cut. 8 hours gone and only 40 minutes in so far. Tedious work that will certainly be ignored when nominations for the Rondos come out next year.

No release date set at this time, but we hope to have it out by year's end.

I'm hoping we get the Jose Mojica Marins films sometime next year. They've been on the coming soon list for about five years now, I think.
Also: bring on the Argento! I know the later output drops significantly when the 90s start, but I went back and watched the earlier classics and well, I really hope Mr. May does his best on these.

Earlier this year they moved their offices to a new city. Back in September Don posted the following on Instagram

Many people have inquired about why Synapse Films has been so quiet lately. One of the main reasons is because we had to take some time to look for new office space. Now that we found new offices (in an entirely new town), we've had to slowly move 20+ years of stuff. It's taking a while, but we should be back up and running soon enough. @drschlegel look what I hung up in my new back office!

Honestly, the best place for what they are working on is Don's Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/donmayjr/), but it is also a little frustrating seeing a bunch of stuff they are working on (Running Time, The Kindred, The Deadly Spawn, Django the Bastard, Today We Kill Tomorrow We Die, etc) with no hint of any of them being finished and ready for release.
