My home town has a Civil War cemetery I used to like walking through on the way home from school. There were two headstones in particular that I always thought were pretty cool.

This one with an interesting poem:

Scattered about are some stones with a finger pointing up to Heaven, like below...

...but there is one that points down. It's the only one I've ever seen pointing down. I've always wondered what Ira did do deserve eternal damnation.

Is that the one you were talking about when you were here? That grave is pretty cool and creepy.

The font on DIED is fucked up. That's a wild stone. Almost seems like a test or a mistake. Maybe Ira's relatives were cheapskates and got it for short funds.

Ian, yes that is the one I was talking about. I love that tombstone. And Paul, I wondered that same thing, if it was a fuck up but they bought it cheap. Could be, but I like to think he did something 1863 heinous...like spitting off the bridge on a Tuesday.

His wife's grave is pretty plain. That didn't help any.

Yeah she's right next to him (which is not necessarily obvious). And look at the death date...looks like a 4, not a 1... I attribute this misinformation to the Curse of Eld Ira.

I actually put them up for him because we share an interest so SHUT UP. If I wanted to be Ian I'd grow gray sideburns and smack you around.

That's a great tombstone. The epitaph's creepy, too: "I shall be satisfied when I awake".

Uh oh.

I am really impressed by the location and photography in this thread. That looks like a great spot to crusie around and explore. One day, I must come to America...and explore your cemetaries! :wtf:

(Plus, Todd lives in Maine...and we all know that's Stephen King country)

I do live in Maine, and even though those photos were from New Hampshire (next state over) it's the same thing. It's a small cemetery though. Not much time will be spent exploring one like that. Now that GIANT cemetery over where the Jane's live...the one they shot the Godfather funeral scene at...that place would be amazing to walk through.

The cemetery in Sleepy Hollow is amazing. I can post some shots from that place later. The Calvary Cemetery in Queens is also massive.

Mount Auburn Cemetery (http://www.mountauburn.org/gallery/) in Cambridge is pretty spectacular. They offer cassette tapes that point out the sites when you drive around it. Well, they may offer something else now. It's been about fourteen/fifteen years since I've been there.

That does look pretty rad. When I was in Boston for work a couple of years ago I thought it was trippy to see graves in the middle of the park in Boston (Boston Commons?).
