Since I promised them to Ian, here's some screenshots from the Optimum BD. Obviously they're not going to be quite the same as the real thing, but just to be different I converted them all as PNG files (less compression). On average, these individual files are around 50% of the original BMP files - so we're closer this time around than the usual JPG conversions... ;)

If you want to see them full-size, click on the links under the formatted linked images...

I was going to do a grab of the famous cigarette scene, but then I thought...nah... ;)

These should all give you (all) a decent idea/representation of what Optimum's BD looks like. Btw, Optimum's disc is coded for Regions A & B.

Thanks for that Mike, looks like the transfer is a good one.

Yes, it looks pretty damn good in motion I must say. Not forgetting that the film was low budget, and Richard Suzuki shot with a variety of lenses, focuses and filters. So it looks about as good as you'd expect a soft-porn classic from the seventies would on Blu-ray...maybe even just a bit better. However, where I used to love the film now I just like it. All the philosophical, psycho-sexual mumbo-jumbo in the last half hour is bit silly in hindsight and rounds out the film on a very vague note (the last shot actually suggests it might have all been a dream).

I've always been of the opinion that what the movie inspired, that being the countless knock offs, was more interesting than the original movie itself.

In hindsight, and having just recently revisited the film, I'm going to have say that my train of thought has come around to the same set of tracks. I'd actually go so far as to say that a lot of Joe D'Amato's Black Emanuelle series were better, as well as a little more hedonistic. Even Ovidio Assonitis' Laure has its own strange charm...

And then, of course, there is Mr. Brass -- our fine purveyor of semi-hard soft-porn from Italy. On the other hand, the flood of crap that 9 & 1/2 Weeks inspired was the nadir of the genre... ;)

The Europeans, generally (and there are of course exceptions like Sarno and Metzger) tend to do softcore better than the Americans. I don't know why that is, but I find that more often than not that really is the case.

They actually do it better than most of us. Australia largely adopted the "snicker-snicker" approach of a lot of Britain's early sex-farces, so we've never really been known for it either. John Lamond's stuff was largely just flat-out slap & tickle exploitation, and there's nothing "erotic" about a cavalcade of boobs and some sniggering ponces. I guess it all comes down to one's definition of eroticism or "classy" soft-core pornography. I'm sure there's some folks out there who think Miley Cyrus in hotpants is prime boner material... :p

Subjectivity is key of course but I think there's something to be said for the artistic merit behind a lot of the Euro stuff that the American filmmaker's don't generally pay as much attention to. If we're talking hardcore, I think the US trumps everybody else (with the French coming in second) but the Italian and the French definitely up the artsy ante with the softer stuff in terms of composition and set design and lighting and wardrobe and all that fun stuff.

Emmanuelle makes me want to smoke a cigarette for some reason, anyone else get that urge from that movie?

That is great news from Kino, I was about to buy an import, but I'll just wait, when I had the DVD set, I used to watch those movies pretty regularly, they were like a time capsule, when free love was realistic, not like today.

I wonder if the transfers are new or if Kino will simply recycle the current ones. Regardless, I'll probably pick them up. I'm hoping "Emmanuelle 4" gets a blu ray release too.

agreed Rakesh, I don't know why no one will release a decent uncut edition of Emmanuelle 4. I have wanted to see it get a good dvd or blu ray release for years in NTSC. I know it has a little hardcore in it if it's the uncut version, but so do many other films released by major studios so that is not the reason why, but it was a good movie, and I hope someone releases it too.

I can't with these films. They were exciting when you were young and didn't have access to porn and hadn't gotten laid yet. Now... snoozeapalooza.

They bring back fun memories though of launching clandestine operations, trying to sneak up unnoticed by your light sleeping parents late at night to VHS-record the tv-movies they did (the shit we went through before porn at the tip of a mouse click). Marcela Walerstein will forever have a soft spot in my cold jaded heart. Teenage me thought she was the prettiest thing I'd seen.

Nabonga speaks the truth. These films are terrible. The photography is so soft you can barely see the naked ladies and makes the point of HD releases a bit moot as far as I'm concerned. 13 year old me considered number 2 a masterpiece (through a complex piece of skulduggery I managed to record it off late night tv at one point) but I'm going to struggle to get to the end of it now.

I recently watched the first 2 in HD and they do look MUCH better than the old DVDs did.

That said, I found the first film pretty dull but enjoyed the 2nd one a fair bit more.

I don't know if I've ever actually seen the 3rd one.

I think the films make sense more as a trilogy, you see her got from an open relationship to a woman who thinks that is maybe not the way she wants to live and thinks she's found true love, I kind of find that an interesting way for the films to go. Because as the 70's moved on towards the 80s America was becoming more conservative. Not sure if that was the case in France or not though.
