Go on, give me a list! I'm curious now, as I've got Gerard Kikoine's Edge of Sanity on DVD now and will be giving it a belated revisit very shortly (next day or two). And that, along with the recent release of Armand Weston's The Nesting on BD, got me thinking about this strange subject...

Weren't Wes Craven, Sean Cunningham, Bill Lusting and Fred Olen Ray all porn-dogs before they became horror icons? I'm pretty sure Tim (Breeders) Kincaid was a smut peddler too.

Anyway, over to you clever folks...who also watch porn! :p

Wes Craven kinda-sorta denies his involvement but Angela The Fireworks Woman is his movie and he appears in it (in a non-sex role) if I remember correctly.

More off the top of my head...

Bill Lustig did Violation of Claudia and Hot Honey under the alias Billy Bagg before going mainstream with Maniac. I understand Video-X-Pix is working on restored editions of those films with Lustig commentary for release in the not too distant future.

Gregory Dark was a prolific smut movie maker before going legit, sort of, with WWE Film's See No Evil.

Gerard Damiano's one stab at horror moviemaking was Legacy Of Satan which is a weird, trippy, sexy 70s devil worshipper movie loaded with his trademark Catholic quirks.

Bill Osco is probably another guy to look at with his productions, though he seems to go back and forth.

What about the dudes that did Poor Pretty Eddie? And the guy who made Honky Tonk Nights, Charles De Santos. Do those count?

Those count.

Chuck Vincent did Deranged in 87 with a bunch of adult stars, including Veronica Hart and Jamie Gillis, and it's pretty fucking great (and not on DVD for some reason).

We're talking just directors here, right?

Why don't we just make it a free-for-all and see what turns up instead? ;)

In that case Jamie Gillis pops up in Night of the Zombies and Maniac features a small cameo from Sharon Mitchell.

And wasn't there some porn chick in The Toolbox Murders? Of course, the late Marilyn Chambers was in Rabid and Angel of H.E.A.T. too...

Yep, Kelly Nichols pops up in Toolbox Murders. She's the pretty redhead with the bathtub scene.

Danny Steinman who is most famous for directing Friday the 13th Part 5: a New Beginning got his start in porn.

Paul Norman tried to go straight when he directed the Clint Howard cult classic Ice Cream Man.

David DeCoteau was another.

Technically, DeCoteau never left considering all the softcore gay porn masquerading as horror films he puts out.

To go back to directors, there's quite a few. Some even went into family films (Jerome Tanner/Icek Tannenbaum).

First, back in the first post, Fred Olen Ray has never done a porn movie, softcore yes but not porn.

Others: Eve Milan did SPOOKIES, Charles Diamond/Phil Prince (not the original Prince) did action movies (Charles Biggs), Paul Ziller first mainstream was horror but he was "Jay Paul" in porn. Cecil Howard did DEAD BOYZ CAN'T FLY. J. Christian Ingvordsen went to action/comedies but later horror. Tom DeSimone, HELL NIGHT, etc.. Edwin Brown did THE PREY. Gregory Goodell ("John Gregory") did HUMAN EXPERIMENTS. Charles Webb (DeSantos) recently started doing horror films. David Marsh (Frasier) did LORDS OF MAGICK and STORMSWEPT. John Bowen (Bone) did a few action films, DARK SECRETS/LETHAL GAMES.

And there's more that I'm sure I'll think of later.

Does Roger Watkins count even if he went into porn after Last House on Dead End Street?

If we go in that direction, there's an even bigger list. Ray Dennis Steckler, Gary Graver, John Patrick Hayes and many more.

No mention of Ferrara starting out (feature wise at least) with Nine Lives of a Wet Pussy yet?

Barry Sonenfeld was supposed to have started in porn

07-10-2017, 05:15 PM
Lloyd Kaufman apparently. He skirts around the subject whenever it's brought up.

Lloyd Kaufman did porn but he actually started with small independent films before doing porn. He used the names Louis Su and David Stitt among others.

Barry Sonnenfeld started as a cameraman for Richard Mailer in the late 70s/early 80s. As far as I know he never directed any adult films. (There's actually quite a few well known cameramen who started out doing adult films or did them on the side to make extra money).

Another director I forgot was Hal Freeman who did the horror film BLOOD FRENZY.
