FRIDAYTHE13THFILMS.COM (http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/upcoming-friday-the-13th-blu-rays-dvds-boxset-from-paramount/): So we know a bastard cropped reissue (http://fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/new-friday-the-13th-blu-ray-censored-to-help-sell-plasma-tvs/) of the reboot is coming from New Line’s home division but over in Paramount land plans are afoot to drop a stack of Friday the 13th releases onto the market on October 4. Now obviously you know that Paramount will almost always disappoint you, so no never-on-blu-ray releases. Let’s take a look at what they are pooping out, then.

Friday the 13th DVD Collection (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005D7E80S/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=officialsleepawa&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B005D7E80S)
Amazon have no information on this – but DVD Empire have more, including a fair price of $37. The proper name is Friday The 13th: 2011 DVD Collection – Limited Edition Gift Set and the product item page (http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?item_id=1581175) gives a description. Neither site list a number of discs, presently.

Return to Crystal Lake like never before with Friday the 13th Kill. . .Kill. . . Kill. . . Collection Limited Edition DVD box set. They’re all here: from the first Friday the 13th: Uncut to Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan. Re-experience the terror and the gore from the exhaulted executioner who never dies in this definitive collection of all 8 of the Friday the 13th films.

Okay, that’s not too shabby. The From Crystal Lake To Manhattan boxset from 2004 is out of print so this would collect the Deluxe Editions into one set. And that will be handy for those that don’t have ‘em, especially considering some of the later entries are now scarce themselves.

Friday the 13th Blu-ray (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005D7E7UE/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=officialsleepawa&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B005D7E7UE) & Friday the 13th DVD
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005D7E7SG/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=officialsleepawa&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B005D7E7SG)The 1980 original will be back on the market in what is presumably a reissue. Can we get some better cover art then the Deluxe Edition, Paramount? Although it looked certifiably badass, the killer on the cover looked like they were wearing black leather. And I don’t know about you but the thought of Mrs Voorhees all leathered up makes me throw up in my mouth a little. Oh okay, and a little turned on.

Friday the 13th Part 3 Blu-ray (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005D7E7YA/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=officialsleepawa&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B005D7E7YA) & Friday the 13th Part 3 DVD (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005D7E81C/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=officialsleepawa&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B005D7E81C)
Hopefully it’s just Amazon’s lazy, inaccurate placeholder details but they are listing the ratio for these as 1.85:1 when the previous releases were 2.35:1 which was what the film was shot in. If it carries through with a cropped 1.85:1 ratio, I don’t have to tell you why that’s a bad thing for purists. In an ideal world Paramount would use these re-releases to offer up a better 3D print. The existing one was lambasted.

Friday the 13th Deluxe Edition Four-Pack (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ARYEBY/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=officialsleepawa&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B005ARYEBY)
Coming earlier than the others on September 20, this will contain the first four Deluxe Edition DVDs. It’s a simple enough dumping of old stock. Of minor note, DVD Empire already stock a blu-ray version of that upcoming set, calledFriday the 13th: 4 Movie Collection (http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?item_id=1436284). It’s part of a Paramount Blu-ray sale and is listed as having only 1 Disc. While I would love to report that Paramount just discreetly dropped Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter onto the Blu-ray format, there’s evidence on that page to suggest it is a glitch on DVD Empire’s part and the release is actually just the first film with an incorrect product title.

When will Paramount learn? Maybe after they’re done whoring Star Trek, their “respectable” genre franchise. Anyhow, someone must have fucked up by letting some of those Deluxe Editions turn out so good! Think we’ll get parts 4-8 on Blu-ray before there’s another format jump? Let us pray.

I'm gonna merge this with the other F13th thread.

And on that note, wow, is Paramount ever milking this series for all its worth, maybe even more.

Shawn Francis
07-27-2011, 04:46 PM
I forgot ALL about the fact that I created that other thread. I only like the first one, JASON LIVES, JASON GOES TO HELL, and that much maligned FREDDY VS. JASON.

I have the first box they put out and I-VI of the DEs. I should get VII and VIII. That'll be cheaper'n getting the box...again.

Ian Jane
07-27-2011, 05:51 PM
Between the two of us we had the 1st run of single discs, then the box. We sold off the single discs and got the SE's when they came out and also have 1, 2 and 3 on BD. I won't be bothering with these again unless they bring out the other sequels on Blu-ray.

So a bit of news - WB is handling a lot of Paramount catalog titles now, including the F13 movies.

I've held off watching the F13 movies for ages in the hope of a BD boxset - looks like that waiting could now pay off.
Really looking forward to seeing them all again, I don't think I can even remember lots of New Beginning, New Blood and Manhattan.

Adding fuel to the fire, according to a post here (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=207286&page=44) Netflix have added parts 3-8 in full 1080p HD. Which I guess means it's safe to assume that the transfers are done.

And the boxed set news is official (http://www.fridaythe13thfranchise.com/2013/06/friday-13th-blu-ray-box-set-coming-this.html), coming to Blu-ray on September 13th!

The 10-disc collection ($129.95 SRP) includes the twelve films on nine Blu-ray discs, as well as a killer DVD bonus disc full of special features on the making of the famous franchise. The must-own set will be presented in a collectible tin case with 11 hours of previously released special features and a 40-page soft cover book. The book is excerpted from Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th, a fan-favorite volume that's viewed as the ultimate memoir of the series, and highlights some of the 200 interviews, 600 photos, storyboards, concept art and more. Also included is a brand new, official Camp Crystal Lake embroidered Counselor Patch.

Friday The 13th: The Complete Collection also includes digital versions of all 12 films with UltraViolet, allowing viewers to download and instantly stream the films to a wide range of devices from computers and compatible tablets to smartphones, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players.

One of the most frightening franchises in film history, Friday The 13th focuses primarily on the character of Jason Voorhees, who drowned as a young child at Camp Crystal Lake due to the inattentiveness of camp counselors. Many years later, the camp becomes the scene of a number of murders - all of which are either committed or motivated by the avenging Jason, who forever lurks at Crystal Lake with his finely-honed machete.

Films in The Collection include:
· Disc 1 - Friday the 13th (1980)
· Disc 2 - Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
· Disc 3 - Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D (1982)
· Disc 4 - Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) NEW TO BLU-RAY
· Disc 5 - Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985) / Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) NEW TO BLU-RAY
· Disc 6 - Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) / Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) NEW TO BLU- RAY
· Disc 7 - Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) / Jason X (2002) NEW TO BLU-RAY
· Disc 8 - Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
· Disc 9 - Friday the 13th (2009) (Theatrical Version and "Killer Cut" Extended Version)
· Disc 10 - Killer Bonus DVD Disc

So no new special features? How were the old special edition DVDs? I never picked any of them up. I've always been interested in the deleted gore footage for VII.

06-11-2013, 03:01 PM
They haven't announced the specs yet, but I'm just hoping they port the old extras over, and an uncut 7 would be nice.

Does anyone else qualify the reboot as a sequel between JgtH and X beside me?

Still, I'm shocked to see all 12 films in one collection. I would think someone has already done a fanedit of Part 7 restoring the work print gore footage.

Does anyone else qualify the reboot as a sequel between JgtH and X beside me?

Yes I do, kinda.

I place it after Jason VS Freddy. It only feels right that JvsF comes after JgtH because of the Fright Glove end. Then after that malarky comes the reboot then Jason X.

Maybe.

Scott MacDonald
06-11-2013, 04:11 PM
Right, that's a better way of looking at it. I haven't watched F Vs. J in years so I sort of forgot that one. The way I see it the flashback was done ala Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness, and the rest is just Jason doing what Jason does best.

Scott
06-11-2013, 04:32 PM
Yeah that's how I see it. I don't put too much stock into the flashback, although I do think it's neat. I don't demand things line up perfectly. For whatever reason the continuity in the Friday series always worked for me, it all fits fine ... inside my head!

Although I was watching the classic Universal Mummy series the past couple days and like Friday if you add up the actual time line it should be way into the future even before Jason X. A lot of time passes between each entry, so while it's seems to be a product of the 80's, in the setting of the movies the reality would be decades and decades passing. The jumps from part 1 to 2, 4 to 6 and 7 are the biggest culprits. Jason growing up to a full grown monster man. Tommy Jarvis growing up to a full grown man. Tina in part 7 growing up. But it all just adds to my enjoyment of the series, it's great and I think it adds to the mythology of Jason creating more of a timeless boogeyman moster.

So the main bitch about this set is the rated cut of JASON GOES TO HELL and the weird hodgepodge of extras that they patched together from previous SE's.

To the first issue - JGTH is a crap film in any version so this doesn't really bother me. The unrated DVD will do just fine the once a decade I watch that turd.

As for the extras - I'm not too upset there either. How much of that stuff am I really gonna watch? There's more than enough here to keep me happy. And ESPECIALLY since I have the CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES doc on order. I'm sure that that will be the definitive and final word on the 13 franchise. I'm happy to have this set.

And yeah - I love JASON X. Sue me. It's a fuckin' hoot.

My issue is that I already own the BDs for 1, 2, 3, Remake, and FvsJ. So I only need BDs 4, 5, 7 and Jason X. I'll wait until next fall when this can be had for $30.

This box will be under $50 within the next 6 months.

Jason X is awesome.

Looks like Paramount is putting out a Blu-ray collection with the 8 films in the series that they own. So this won't likely replace the 2013 Complete Collection release but as that's out of print and expensive, maybe someone here cares about this.

I would buy this in a heartbeat if part III were presented in proper 3-D.

I loved it when I saw it in the theatre when it was first released. It was the first 3-D movie I had ever seen and the effects blew me away!

I don't understand people who want 3-D to die... you aren't missing out on anything since the movies are always presented in 2-D also. To take away 3-D only impacts those of us who enjoy it!

Just trolling through late night tv and came across Friday the 13th Part 4. I realised pretty quickly I hadn't seen this before. Am I nuts or this the best of the bunch? Kills are frequent and messy, the girls are very acceptable for 80s women and frequently unclothed. Plus bonus unexpected Corey fucking Feldman! There's very little to say about a film like this but it seems by this point they had the formula nailed down.

Number 5 was going to play straight after 4. I should have stayed up for it. It was already 1 am already though. Probably I played it right...

It sure was. I'm a Crispin Glover fanboy, and it always amuses me to no end to see him in this.

I thought they were doing a marathon last night but actually they followed up with Part 5 tonight. This one didn't really do it for me. Which is a good example of what a fine line these things ride. I honestly couldn't name any notes 4 hit that 5 didn't. Hot 80s chicks? Check. Frequent, fast, brutal, killings? Check. Slow motion scenes of people being thrown through glass? Check. Still I was left entirely cold.

The only part of this I really enjoyed was the bit where the kid shags his girlfriend in the woods and then says "I need to go wash up' and disappears. In what unverse is that acceptable behaviour?! If she needs to go wash up afterwards, sure. But really, that process was so repugnant to him that rather than settling in for a snuggle or round 2 he has to go wash his cock? And this is acceptable to her? I was glued to the screen to see what would happen next.

It will be frustrating if the only thing worthwhile is the uncut Jason Goes to Hell.

Don't worry, they'll clean up the original too, so we can Savini's shockingly sub-par FX even clearer.

It would be nice if there were to include a proper Blu-ray 3D of Friday the 13th Part III.

Goddamn, I just want an uncut part 2, the nightmare ending for part 3, and the cut Gore from part 7 remastered as best as humanly possible and put back in the fucking movie.

Hopefully this means the lawsuit is ending soon?

Matt H.

I'll take that crappy VHS workprint of the uncut Part 7. Just include it as an extra, like Scream did on their SLEEPAWAY CAMP 3 and ROTLD discs.

Alex K.

They could use the VHS workprint of part 7. Just remaster it and add foley as best as you possibly can and put it back in the fucking movie.

He did an excellent job with nearly unwatchable materials. The deaths of Russell, Dr. Crews and Melissa fare the best. The rest are just too dark and/or murky. The only deaths that might get an X today would be Ben's and Dr. Crew's and maybe the sleeping bag girl. The MPAA was ridiculous back then.

Alex K.

I'm thinking Shout can remaster the work print to make it at least watchable.

Also noticed the guy used Doom sounds for the Fisherman. He uses the hurt noise the marine makes in doom.

There was a leaked version that may have been different before it came out. As for censorship I think the US version may have been slightly cut in the 'screw' scene. It's been a while though so I may be full of shit.

I'm genuinely curious, which one is your least favorite? I think I have a hard time ranking them all, I just know I like the New Line films the least but I still like them. The only one I don't revisit that much is FREDDY VS JASON. I thought the remake was a step up from that. A huge step up. But I have a really hard time ranking the Paramount films. Part 4 is the most iconic, but the last time I watched the first film it worked for me in ways it never did before. It's the finest of the bunch, IMO. In recent years Part 8 is the one I go to the most. But it's hard to beat the through line of 1-4.

The worst thing about the remake is that the kids are a lot douchier than usual and there's no one to root for.

I thought the the hero guy from SUPERNATURAL was worth rooting for. Otherwise I agree, it's a cast full of assholes.

I honestly enjoy all of them at some level except for Jason X. Jason X is absolute dog shit and the only things it has going for it are the face smash kill and the Cronenberg cameo. That is it. Everything else is dog shit. Unlikable characters. Obnoxious and retarded humor. No atmosphere whatsoever. Bad CGI kills. Very few gory kills on top of that. The design of Jason is horrible up until the last 5 minutes where he goes Terminator. When Mad TV takes the piss out of you several years before you have a chance to make a terrible movie then you fucked up bad.

LOL

That Mad TV skit is great, I never seen that before.

I find JASON X enjoyable enough but it's always felt like a cheap fan film and the CGI kills it for me (pun firmly intended!). But I like it better than FREDDY VS JASON which just feels too slick. The New Line films fuck with the formula too much. I do like GOES TO HELL and think it's underrated but it too goes against the grain. That's why it's easy to like remake. It the first film to go back to the original formula of killing kids in the woods since Part 7. It's all I really want from these films.

JGTH feels like fanfic too but it has a healthy budget and looks good. The f/x and gore looks great, maybe the best in the series IMO. It's a good HIDDEN movie, better than HIDDEN 2. It's just a wonky direction for the F13 series.

As a kid it's disappointing the series petered out. I figured we would've had FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 13 by now.

I remember being super-excited about JASON GOES TO HELL before it was released, and finding it so-so when I finally got the chance to see it (on videocassette - I don't think it played at a cinema near me). That said, I revisited it about 10 years ago, and taken on its own terms (ie, without the expectations set in place by it being a FRIDAY THE 13th picture), it's not bad. Not great, but not terrible either. The makeup effects, as you say, Scott, are particularly good.

I don't think Part 8 or Jason Goes to Hell even got theatrical releases in the UK such was their lack of popularity at the time. Companies were pretty ruthless when something flopped or did so-so business in the US when it came to dumping films straight to video, especially with horror.

I'll try to take your criticism about Jason X seriously while ruminating on the fact that you like the remake. Second favourite after Final Chapter, sheeit.

I dare you to watch Jason X sober and then come back. And the remake is damn good.

This will probably upset Mark, but I really dislike JASON LIVES. It's like a made-for-TV movie that is supposedly funny (besides a few smiles, it's really not) and I fucking hate how Jason looks in this, especially his tight coveralls. It would be slightly better if the MPAA trims were restored, but as it is, this would probably get a PG-13 today.

Nah, I don't get upset about people not liking movies that I like. I think that Part VI is the first one I remember seeing entirely; I know that I saw part IV prior, but unsure if it was the whole film. In any event, a lot of the Friday films are classic, but they're few and far between.

Jason X at least tried to do something a little different; the remake went the same route as every other remake, creating a bland-looking slasher that looks like every other slasher remake.

And MAD TV was garbage.

I don't either but it still perplexes me. I like part 6 but I'd place it as my 3rd favorite after Final Chapter and Remake respectively. Jason X is just dumb bad. And I hate movies like that. Obnoxiously dumb that revel in their dumbness and using it as a shield against criticism.

Mad TV in its prime was awesome.

But it's hard to beat the through line of 1-4.

This is the bottom line. Imagine if the series really ended after 4? It would be fondly remembered as a classic series, even with the admittedly stupid resurrection of Jason in Part 2 (as per Savini's comment in CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES). I actually kinda hate Paramount for doing Part 5, particularly after Joe Zito delivered an exceptional final installment for them. After FINAL CHAPTER it's just shameless exploitation, and although I enjoy some of them to an extent, it's just a wildly uneven, bullshit series that simply cannot be taken seriously.

The series started as a cheap cash grab and shameless exploitation. Sean Cunningham only made it because of the success of Halloween and saw dollar signs. He was smart enough to grab Tom Savini and let him riff on the gory set pieces. There was no "dignity" to the series. Paramount never looked at it with a sense of pride. Steve Miner giving direction to the Jason actor in part 3 when asked was like "You're the shark in Jaws! A mindless killer! Leave me the fuck alone!"

No one gave a fuck.

The worst thing about the remake is that the kids are a lot douchier than usual and there's no one to root for.

I found that to a be a positive for the film. It makes it easier to root for Jason. That said, there are 3 sympathetic characters you feel sorry for. The brother (Clay) searching for his sister (Whitney) and nice girl (Jenna) that for some reason is dating one the biggest douches in slasher history.

The remake is possibly my favorite film in the franchise. It has everything I'm looking for in a mindless slasher.

Which is your least favorite Friday the 13th movie?

Manhattan and Part 3 are near unwatchable for me. Manhattan is too boring and I hate the cast in Part 3. It just too goofy for me. I'm not fond of Jason Lives either but I need to give it another try. I do hate a lot of JGTH but the kills are amazing so I find it sorta worthwhile. I have a hard time getting past how bad Jason looks in JGTH.

If they ever found suitable elements for the extra gore in The New Blood (7), it would sit with parts 4 and the remake as my favorite. I really did Part 2, Jason X and Freddy vs Jason as well.

Alex K.

I thought the only douche character was Trent. The guy who was supposed to be a douchebag and was great at playing one. I thought the other characters were likable enough.

Scott
07-18-2020, 03:39 PM
I agree. Trent was the only real jerk and there's one of those in each entry. If anything he deserves a special slasher award for playing such a great unlikable asshole.

I hate the stoner character. I hate the one in VS FREDDY too. There's always been weed in these movies but it never called attention to itself, it was just a thing partying kids did. But those two characters and their scenes are played too cartoony, like a Cheech and Chong bit.

The remake feels like one of the meaner entries in the series along with Part 5. I put off seeing it for a long time until I finally gave it a shot and ended up liking it just fine. I did the same thing with Part 8 when I was a kid. I believed the negative hype. I completely get it's shortcomings but when I finally watched it it all worked for me. I love the soundtrack and all the characters. Even the goofy not-NYC NYC setting. That it is 100% Canadian makes it feel like more of a slasher to me than the later New Line films.

Hahaha, exactly what I was thinking of. Cracked me right up when he shows, and I actually had to think, holy fuck, was he in F vs J?

I liked Freddy vs. Jason a lot when I saw it (I had tickets to the advanced screening that was actually postponed because of the blackout that happened that day, so I saw it the next day), but it hasn't held up for me.

Freddy VS Jason has grown on me. The only knocks against it I have are: CGI gore, Freddy only kills one person in the entire film, and that chick from Destiny's Child was distracting. Otherwise I'd give it an 8 out of 10. It's a great send off to both franchises.

I took the footage that guy made of the cut gore scenes from Part 7 and re-edited them back into the movie as best as I can. It was fairly difficult because the video sometimes started mid-action.

I understand you can only do so much with VHS but it would be a god damn shame if they didn't try to put the cut gore back into the movie as it should be.

Yeah, I feel like they should try and do a composite with a disclaimer beforehand saying the video quality won't be great and all that stuff.

yeah, give us composite cuts! I don't care for this reissue, my old blu-ray metal box will do until they decide to (finally) put out the uncut versions.

I will take a shot in the dark that Paramount is preventing it for whatever reason. It happened when Discoteck Media found the uncut footage from Ebola Syndrome but the license wouldn't allow them to put them back in the movie.

I just can't believe they destroyed that footage and only vhs-inserts survived. there is always some foreign print that was screened uncut back then in some cinema (like the "dolph punisher" french uncut print they found). I think they're lying, F13 was a very popular franchise and money maker for them. why destroy the uncut footage?

Paramount also despise the franchise. I can see it happening.

For all the money the movie made, Paramount was embarrassed to be associated with them and treated the franchise like they’d rather it went away. They even blocked directors from appealing to the MPAA over the cuts required for R ratings.

It's not even necessarily down to Paramount's disdain for the franchise - film elements take up plenty of room and it's not uncommon for extra material to be discarded once the film is complete. I can easily imagine some executive deciding it's not worth paying to store all the negative off-cuts and unused scenes from a low-budget slasher film once the theatrical release is in the rearview mirror. A lot of the time it just comes down to luck whether stuff survives or not.

When Ridley Scott went to make the final cut of Blade Runner he discovered all the unused film and sound elements had been scheduled to be junked over a decade earlier, someone just forgot to add the final signature to the paperwork. And the reason Synapse couldn't release the original cut of Curtains was because the storage company had decided to chuck all the large-format tapes to save space only a few years earlier.

I got a little FOMO here but I'm waiting for the UHD release. There just isn't enough to upgrade from the metal box .
