Interesting to see that this is coming from Lionsgate and not Anchor Bay.

Looks like they lost the rights to it, but NOT EVIL DEAD? Is there a blu-ray out of that one? Wonder if they still own the rights to all those Hammer flicks they used to put out?

Ian Jane

AB put out an Evil Dead Blu-ray a year or two back - it wasn't that long ago (and they did a nice job with it too). No idea on the Hammer films.

Cliff just told me Studio Canal owns EVIL DEAD 2 now and Lionsgate has a deal with them. Have to put that EVIL DEAD blu-ray on my wishlsit then. Getting a code free blu-ray this Christmas, fingers-crossed. So, how does the EVIL DEAD blu-ray look? What kind of extras does it have? I got the BOOK OF THE DEAD standard version.

Ian Jane
08-01-2011, 12:03 PM
It carries over most of the extras from the last SE, it doesn't lose much. It looks way better, sounds way better too. AB actually did a great job on it, it's definitely worth owning.

Good to hear. WILL be putting it on my DVD Empire wishlist then.

And it's got both aspects included.

I'm holding off on this one. Friggin' pre-order with no information whatsoever? No thanks.

From FANGORIA (http://www.fangoria.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5309%3Adisc-details-maniac-intruder-new-evil-dead-ii&catid=1%3Alatest-news&Itemid=167): "While chatting up all those Sam Raimi associates, Felsher has also been talking to them about EVIL DEAD II, which Lionsgate Home Entertainment issues on a new Blu-ray currently slated for November 15. While Felsher can’t reveal everything you can expect to find on this disc, he does tell us, “There will be a huge making-of documentary with over two dozen members of the cast and crew [including Campbell, pictured above], and much more. Also, Lionsgate is aware of how dissatisfied people were with the transfer on the previous EVIL DEAD II Blu-ray, and are taking steps to solve that issue for the new edition.” Keep your eyes on this site for further details!"

Man, I hope so...they had mentioned a bunch of extras for the Army of Darkness blu-ray edition as well, but as near as I can tell, "Screwhead Edition" means "You're a screwhead for buying this barebones stuff" :D

Ian Jane

I'm more concerned about the transfer than the extras. There have been loads of extras done for all the ED movies so far, I don't know what else there is to learn about. Just make sure it looks nice and sounds nice and I'll double dip.

Mark Tolch

Agreed. The Blu of ED is fantastic, with both aspects included. Other than checking out the extras to see what was included, i didn't even go there . Maybe they could talk to the people who put out ED1.

Greg Nicotero told me he had six hours worth of home video he took during the making. To someone like me who geeks out on that shit, I would LOVE to see it all. So there...that's what else there is to learn.

Did anyone else hear that loud crash?

Oh, wait...it was just Todd dropping names.

Howard Berger told me he had 6 hours of cassette tape audio of Greg Nicotero shooting home video of Robert Kurtzman taking polaroids.

Looks like Lionsgate is ALSO re-releasing a standard DVD, too, on the same date the blu-ray debuts.

Mike Felsher just posted this on Facebook:

"I'll admit its hard for me to be objective in some ways, but having just viewed the new transfer of EVIL DEAD II for the first time, I have to say this lays to waste any version of the film you've ever seen before. Lionsgate really stepped up to the plate for this one. Deep rich colors, natural healthy film grain, sparing use of noise reduction, and practically blemish free. This is the first time the original negative was used to create a home video transfer for this title, and it shows!"

I've got my copy en route, should have it Tues. or Wed. at the latest and am pretty geeked out for it.

They removed the wire attached to the eyeball?

Ian Jane
11-09-2011, 11:23 PM
Alek - no dice on that cut footage.

Todd - yup, the eyeball wire has been removed. I always kinda liked it there. This is a pretty solid transfer otherwise and the new Red Shirt featurette is longer than the movie itself and insanely indepth.

Mark Tolch
11-10-2011, 08:56 AM
That's the first thing I thought of, too. No filament on the eyeball, WTF? That's a shame. It's not enough to stop me from buying it (my bank card does NOT like what this site is doing to it lately), but I'll definitely think about it everytime that scene comes up.

You're being PUNISHED!

Seriously though, it bugs me that they took the wire out. I'm not into revisionist history. If it was there on the film, it should be there on the Blu-ray. Aside from that though, they did a great job.

I agree with you on the revisionism. Thing is, it's not like the eyeball scene is like "Wow, that is SO realistic that I was freaking out, man, but that wire ruined it for me". It's like the hand that gets cut off the Pit Witch and slaps itself over the woman's face in AOD, it's a gag shot. Leaving the wire in made it that much better.

Ian Jane
11-10-2011, 12:13 PM
Agreed. I think though that they took it out in the Book of the Dead edition too, didn't they? I seem to remember that being the case. Still, it's kind of Lucasy.

Mark Tolch
11-10-2011, 04:14 PM
I don't know about the book of the dead version...but the AB tin box had the wire featured prominently. And is it part II i'm thinking of with the matte moons?

Terry C
11-10-2011, 07:03 PM
Yeah, the early version of the DVD had the wire and Sam Raimi wanted it out in the Book of the Dead 2 edition.

I pretty sure it was the first movie that had the horrible moon mattes. Then again the second might have had it also.

Honestly I could care less about the wire and Evil Dead 2 is my favorite of the series, I do love it, but it doesn't bother me much. If I wanted to see the wire I could pop in the old DVD. But for you guys too bad they didn't release a 'wire' and 'non-wire' version. :D

Ian Jane
11-11-2011, 11:40 AM
The wire isn't a deal breaker, it's just been there since I saw it as a kid, so I kind of like it there.

Shawn Francis
11-11-2011, 02:55 PM
Wow, those screen caps look amazing! Man, they really did polish that mother up. A missing wire does NOT bother me in the least. Now, had they suddenly decided to replace one of the main characters with a CG version, okay, sure, NOW we have a problem.

Paul Casey
11-11-2011, 03:18 PM
They replaced the wire with CG non-wire.
