View Full Version : The Raid (RAD TRAILER ALERT!)

This looks pretty intense. Given Magnolia's tendency to release Asian films not necessarily from China/HK or Japan, maybe they'll pick this one up for North American distribution? The trailer definitely got my interest (Mr. Redman posted it on facebook).

US Poster released today:

Notice it's now The Raid: Redemption? Evidently it's the first part of a trilogy. Thanks to Twitch (http://twitchfilm.com/news/2012/02/final-us-poster-for-the-raid.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TwitchEverything+%28Twitch%3A +Everything%29) for the info.

Could be boss, but could also be complete shit as 99% of all asian action is since like.... 2002-2003 something. I have sort of lost faith in their ability to make good movies over there. They are worse then hollywood in using metrosexual prettyboys and pretty but completely untalented women as "actors". I shall rent it if it gets released over here based solely on the premise and the trailer, but I aint holding my breath.

And by there I mean Hong Kong + South Korea.

Ian Jane

I agree that the glory days of HK action cinema seem to be behind them but there are still some decent entries coming in from time to time, enough so that I haven't completely lost interest.

Reviews for this one so far have been pretty positive. It's played some festival dates. There's a very in-depth (and glowing) review from Twitch here (http://twitchfilm.com/reviews/2011/09/tiff-2011-the-raid-review.php).

I managed to catch this at the cinema a couple of weeks ago. It's excellent. Hyper violent with amazing choreography, good performances and had enough plot and character development to keep me tense and entertained between the bursts of frenetic Silat action. Wife loved it too.

AFAIK, the Shinoda score was for the UK and US releases only. Originally, the film had a very different score.

Nice to see them do a re-worked score well......usually they spoil the movie when they hip-hop/ westernise them!!!!!

Saw it and loved it.......It was an action film.....and there was action...lots of action......end of story!!!

Ending was quite disappointing...I wanted him to really fight his way out and then meet the backup when he was going out the gates and it was all over....Jackie Chan Old School type ending!!!!!!

Heard rumblings of the sequel going into pre-production recently....

Ian Jane
08-15-2012, 10:53 AM
Gareth Evans has mentioned it a few times. There's an interview with him here (http://movieline.com/2012/03/15/gareth-evans-on-remaking-the-raid-and-the-raid-2s-four-on-one-car-fight/) that offers some details.

After his Raid promotional tour is done, Evans will turn to pre-production on the sequel, with plans to begin filming next January. But how do you follow a film that’s already packed with non-stop, relentless, wall-to-wall, inventive action?

“By going in a slightly different direction,” he teased. “If I try to replicate and copy it’ll fall on its ass, so I want to do something kind of different. We’re going to take the story out now and go onto the streets. So everything that was scary about that building and about that boss is small fry compared to the gangs we meet in the sequel — now we meet the people who let him have that building. And we expand the world out, we explore certain characters that were kind of hinted at in this but not expanded upon, and we ramp up some of the set pieces as well.”

Watched it tonight. Thought it was quite good. Sadly some of the action scenes suffered from my biggest pet peeve in modern action films, the wildy "shaky cam" thing, where they jerk the camera all around spastically to try to make it seem exciting. Kinda pissed me off to see it done in a movie where it just wasn't needed. Usually they do it to make up for the fact that the actors don't know martial arts.

Just watch this tonight and thought te shaky cam was thoroughly unnecessary and frequently distracting. Otherwise, lived up well to my expectations, even if the ending was a little anticlimactic.

Mostly of the Asians who are expert in some kind of martial art are pretty small...Even the real Muay Thai champions from Thailand are very small...So, please don't make that mistake if one of them ever causes trouble with you...

Oh I get that, its just that I didn't think he outclassed his two opponents in skill enough to take that much punishment, for that long, in a 2 against one fight. It just got kind of tedious after a while.

Re-watched the 1st movie this afternoon (thanks to Andrew for the heads up on the sale at Best Buy!) and it really is just a ridiculously relentless action movie. It doesn't stop. I feel like my head is still spinning a bit.

Bring on the sequel. That trailer has me stoked.

I'm glad the news was of some use to you Ian! This was my first time seeing the film and it took the hype, stomped it into a bloody unrecognizable pulp and then still exceeded my expectations. Big mistake on my part to watch this on New Year's Day night, with plans to head to the haystack early...it took some time to decompress after that adrenaline mainline. I'm really hard pressed to quibble with much of anything about this, maybe the final fight went on a tad too long but that's about it. Had that rare thing happen too, where I was ready to watch it again straight away, something that is almost unheard of for me.

I honestly can't see the sequel coming anywhere near the high benchmark set by the first, but I'll certainly catch it first chance.

Has the inevitable shitty US remake been announced yet?

For the record, the US unrated BD has the option of watching the film with the original soundtrack.

The UK disc only includes the Mike Shinoda score, which is slightly frustrating - but I thought it worked quite well.

Sundance screening review! (http://badassdigest.com/2014/01/22/sundance-review-the-raid-2)

"The Raid 2 (it’s subtitled Berendal in Indonesia, no one is sure what it’ll be subtitled in the US according to Evans) is an absolute masterwork. The action is unmatched, the camerawork and frame composition is always stunning and the crime tale underpinning it all is compelling. Gareth Evans managed to top The Raid, but only by making a movie that’s completely different, but just as utterly badass."

Well I was slow to get around to this one. My home town has one last remaining, single screen movie house from the 20s and they were hosting a double bill of this and the sequel. Managed to get myself front row on the balcony about half way up the 20 metre screen. Four hours or so later I reeled from the cinema feeling fucking pulverised by the energy of these films.

RAID 1: First of all props on the confidence shown by the director to open the movie with the Redemption subtitle. Ballsy move. This was Mauy Thai was it? Looked like it was anyway, all elbows and knees. I'm not sure I've seen alot of Thai boxing martial arts films. It ain't pretty but it looks shockingly violent. The speed and brutality were kind of reminiscent of wathing Sonny Chiba in full flow. I thought the fight scenes were shot beautifully. There's obviously a bit of ramping but otherwise totally believable and the complexities of the setups was often mindblowing.

There's a few quibbles. Our hero moves well but he's no ones idea of a charismatic leading man. The filmmakers don't give him a lot of help either. We have no idea this guys a badass until he starts being a badass. That final fight was amazing (AMAZING!) but totally wrong as well. In the final fight our man should be facing overwheming odds not teaming up with his brother to beat on one dimunitive bad guy who we didn't actually know was seriously tough until this very scene. It's just back the front and a bit puzzling how that happened. Then that climax... What were they thinking? Go back and watch Die Hard guys. That's how you deal with the big bad in the final scene.

But this film is action porn. And it's hot.

THE RAID 2: This one was messy. Gareth Evans is not great at plotting or character and there's a lot more of that here than there was in the first one which means the good bits get spread further apart. I was struggling to follow at times but I was quite drunk so I shouldn't lay all that at Evans door.

But the good bits are very good. There's a supercool shot on the highway where the camera races down the highway, in through a car window and out the other side. Knocked my socks off it did. I was raving about it to my friend afterwards and he told me: "You know how they did it? They handed the camera off to a guy in the passenger seat who was dressed as a chair." Yes! Then the finale is handled correctly and is fucking intense. The level of filmmaking in these fight is stunning. Be so good if we can start seeing that kind of kinetic action moving into films that aren't specificall martial arts films. Imagine a couple fights like that in a Bond film.

Anyway, all reseverations to one side for a moment, super cool.

Wasn't MUAY THAI was Indonesian art of pencak silat, a martial art influenced by both Indian and Chinese forms of fighting.

The actor who plays Rama, 31-year old Iko Uwais, has been practicing pencak silat since he was 10.

The centuries-old art is a close-combat system that emphasizes the use of weaponry and a vicious combination of elbows, feet, knees, hands, and sometimes head butts.

While silat can be used for self-defense, it also involves steps that can be transformed into one beautiful, mesmerizing folk dance.
