From Blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=7584):
Independent film company Kino Lorber has just announced its acquisition of the North American rights to the UK-based film library Redemption Films. The deal gives the studio access to a wide variety of cult and classic European horror films which Kino will release under its newly created "Redemption" label.

Up to thirty-five films will street on Blu-ray in 2012, with especially important entries receiving full HD masters from restored 35mm negatives.
First to Blu-ray in early 2012 will be Jean Rollin's erotic vampire films The Nude Vampire (1970), Shiver of the Vampires (1971), The Iron Rose (1973), Lips of Blood (1974), and Fascination (1979).

These five selections have the aforementioned restored HD transfers as well as a number of special features, including twenty-page essays from Tim Lucas, the editor of Video Watchdog magazine and author of Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark.

From Kino's official press release:

"In addition to the classic horror films of Jean Rollin, the Redemption Films library also includes Wes Craven's original The Hills Have Eyes: Part 2 (1985), Jack Cardiff's cult classic Girl on a Motorcycle (1968), Martin Campbell's (Casino Royale, Green Lantern) debut feature The Sex Thief (1974) and Italian horror legend Mario Bava's Hatchet for a Honeymoon (1970) – among many others.

Kino Lorber V.P. Bret Wood, who curated the Rollin series and manages the Redemption brand, says: 'Having access to the original negatives of a director like Jean Rollin, who is ripe for critical reappraisal, is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a DVD and Blu-ray producer like me. To be able to systematically and meticulously re-master the films in HD, curate an exciting blend of special features, and then, release these films as a cohesive body of work is a cineaste's dream come true.'

Kino Lorber President and C.E.O. Richard Lorber added: 'The Rollin collection is an ideal brand extension for our company, well known for great German horror and sci-fi classics going back to the silent era. Along with our restorations of Metropolis and Nosferatu, under our Redemption label we'll bring something new to our fans we believe they'll eagerly embrace. No cinephile or horror buff can resist Rollin's signature works...with his inimitable style that crosses Corman with Cocteau.' "

So, obviously and thankfully this extends far beyond the Rollin titles previously announced. This is AWESOME news. Kino's track record with Blu-ray has been a very good one so far. I am pretty stoked to see this happening.

Hope they won't use the bad Redemption Films cover anymore... I usually don't make a big deal with the DVD cover, but at least I like them to be related to the movie included.

Indiewire (http://www.indiewire.com/ipop/photo/kino_lorber_and_redemption_films_celebrate_their_n ew_partnership/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed) reports that there could be more Bava in the works with Kino. Did AB loose the rights maybe? Kino looks to be poised to be a huge cult movie player in 2012.

"Kino Lorber president and CEO Richard Lorber described “Shiver,” which the company plans to release in January, as “the true “True Blood”—Roger Corman meets Jean Cocteau.” He also hinted at another upcoming deal with Jezebel Films, as well as plans to distribute the films of Mario Bava. Bret Wood, Kino Lorber VP and curator of the Rollin films, explained the marketing plan for the new releases. “The longtime strategy is that if you treat every film like a treasure, people will respond to them,” he said. “That’s what we want to do with Rollin’s work.”

If they'd tightened up the letter-spacing on the Redemption logo they could have made it a lot bigger.

I'm really excited about these and quibbles aside, those covers are infinitely nicer than what I'd been expecting.

Fascination and Shiver are definite upgrades for me from my old non-anamorphic Redemption DVDs -- my two favorite Rollin films. Lips is a must buy too, since I don't have that one. I'm still on the fence about Nude and Iron Rose. I don't have either of those on DVD (although Iron Rose is currently waiting for a viewing on my DVR from the recent TCM broadcast), but they're farther down my list.

I have the dvd, I thought it was cool, and worth checking out for the first time. Its a pretty well made film, and nicely shot. For DeSade it's obvisously toned down, also its English so even moreso.
The director has only one credit, this film! With that said I probably will not upgrade.

Redemption also replied to me that LIVING DEAD GIRL will be out very soon, and GRAPES OF DEATH has been mastered and will be released very early next year.

EDIT: Redemption said this just now too re: Bava's HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON: "HFAH has been remastered from the negative and apparently looks stunning, release date will be confirmed shortly."

I understand the need to make your product as commercially viable as you can and don't want to sound ungrateful about the fact that these are even coming out on Blu-ray in the first place, but that BD cover is awful.

This is almost crappy enough to make skip that one... One thing for sure I don't pre-order it. Will wait to know about the extra. I usually don't care about a DVD cover but for me a shitty cover like that is just insulting. I know Redemption equals butt ugly cover but common seriously...

And they don't even have to use old poster art if they don't want to. Look at the Encore covers: very classy, almost Criterionesque.

Todd Jordan
03-26-2012, 06:16 PM
There's no reason they couldn't do reversible covers. How rad would it be to have that poster art on display. Shout does it with the Corman stuff, Code Red does it...it's such a cool gimmick that can cater to the geeks as well as try to get impulse sales and shelf appeal or whatthefuckever.

BrianS
03-26-2012, 09:18 PM
That original poster is great! Unfortunately, Rape is the worst Rollin BD cover yet. Reversible art would work for me.

As much as I applaud Kino for bringing these wonderful films to bluray (I would buy them even if they came in a brown paper bag) they really could have used some better cover art. I'm really glad I decided to keep my beloved Encore DVD:s when I upgraded. Now I have the Kino:s for watching and the beautiful Encore:s for shelf admiration and booklet reading. Win-win.

Ian Jane
03-27-2012, 08:40 AM
The Encore titles have, so far at least, had some extras that didn't make it to the Blu-ray's as well. I'm holding on to my set.

Ryan K
03-27-2012, 01:11 PM
They couldn't even get their logo right on that Rape of the Vampire cover. Look at how pixelated the text is. It appears as if someone tried to knock out the background in MS Paint. Surely it has to be a mock-up and not the final file?

Ian Jane
03-28-2012, 05:54 PM
Amazon's got it listed as a Redemption release (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0074V61MO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=cognitrespon-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0074V61MO) for 4/24. Haven't seen this one mentioned yet:

Just watched Redemptions new Shiver Of The Vampires disc. Never been a huge Rollin fan- I find him a bit staid and self conscious- but I had a Euro cult itch that wasn't being scratched elsewhere so picked this up. Not a bad flick. The groovy 70s rock music gave the film a bit of drive usually missing from Rollins stuff and the lead actress was pretty damned viewable sans clothes. Still felt like Rollin is more interested in finding the pretty angle for the shot rather than telling the story but it definitely had moments and it's a great disc.

Can't argue with that. His stuff has always been about mood and atmosphere and visuals for me, rather than the narrative.

Did 'black sunday' get announced as a future release also? or did i imagine that? These bava's and the polselli flick are my most anticipated titles so far. Were you all aware that redemption own a 100min+ edit of polselli's 'revelations of a psychiatrist in a worl of perverse sex', marc morris re-assembled it in the early 90's but its never seen the light of day, obviously because of its dodgy content, how great would that be on blu ray?

Blood Beast Terror is Tigon, not Hammer if I'm not mistaken. Haven't seen it in years but remember it being pretty goofy. Fun, but goofy and if you like Peter Cushing and Vanessa Howard, you'll probably have fun with it so long as you're not expecting anything along the lines of the Hammer classics.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums and have a question for any other collectors of the Kino/Redemption titles.

I just got "Burke and Hare" and "Blood Beast Terror" in the mail today. They have spine numbers 14 and 15. I thought I'd picked up all the titles that had been released so far, but I seem to be missing spine number #13. I have all three of the Rollin titles that were released last month, so I'm at a loss for what this could be.

Can anyone confirm whether a film with spine number #13 has been released yet, or is this just a numbering issue?

And welcome to the boards!

I wonder if they're just being clever there, or if they're actually implying that their BD will have more than one of the various cuts tht have been released over the years. That would be pretty sweet.

Edit: Also, since Redemption tends to release blocks of films from the same director on the same day, I hope that means we'll be getting Virgin Among the Living Dead in Oct. too

I don't have the old Redemption version but I'm fairly certain the Redemption R1 disc omits the commentary? Not sure if it uses the same transfer or not (I suspect the Kino release may use a new transfer).

Which cover do you have WillenClaeys?

My understanding (I only have the Kino blu-ray edition of this one) is that 1) Ian is right about the commentary -- it was only used on the Anchor Bay DVD and the recent Kino release but was missing from the first Redemption DVD, but that 2) if the new Kino release uses a different transfer it's comparable in quality. According to Mondo Digital, the Kino blu-ray is only a marginal improvement over the old Redemption DVD in picture quality, which leads me to believe that the new Kino DVD will probably look about the same as the old Redemption one...

I expect I'll pre-order the Bava blu's in August. BLACK SUNDAY and LISA AND THE DEVIL are Bava's finest films. If only Kino could get hold of the AIP version as an option or to segment the additional Karloff scenes. I hope the covers will be free of that Redemption logo crap.

Just a suggestion, but i thought it might be a good idea to start a master list of redemption titles, perhaps on the first page. They are releasing them at quite a rate,i think there has been nearly 25 blu rays this year already(including the jezebel titles and hills have eyes etc),I have all the redemption blu rays except number 13 and 'the asphyx'(i have the uk oden dvd which looks fantastic already),and i have 'black magic rites','living dead girl' and 'two orphan vampires' on route.

What does everyone think?and does anybody have 'black magic rites' yet and is its spine number 13?

All the reviews are quite positive, which is great to hear. What I found especially interesting, though, was his discussion of the Lisa BD. He argues that the disparity between the color scheme of Lisa compared to previous DVD releases is actually the result of the new BD being closer to Bava's intended theatrical presentation.

Yes, it's been announced at CHFB that Baron Blood and Kidnapped will come out this December!

Excellent news. I figured with the Baron Blood trailer on the discs it was going to happen but hadn't heard about Kidnapped. Hopefully these do well enough that we see further titles in the new year.

Release date is 12/11/12.

I'm really starting to think that Kino/Redemption is just using spine numbers to screw with the heads of OCD collectors. Female Vampire and Exorcism are spine numbers 22 and 23 respectively. So now 13, 20, and 21 are all missing in action.

makes me wonder if Black Sunday and Lisa and the Devil were conceived as being 20 and 21 until the rights issues intervened (still not sure what the reason was why they can't be called Redemption titles)...presumably since Baron Blood and Kidnapped are part of the same bloc of titles, they won't have spine numbers either...

I think VISIONS OF ECSTASY will be #13.

EDIT: Not so sure anymore. Redemption responded to someone on FB that the announcement is coming soon, but it's "really special, very unexpected and fiendishly clever!"

Also of interest: NUDE FOR SATAN in 5/13, and they're looking into releasing some Naschy titles apparently (but those would be in 2914).

I watched BLACK SUNDAY last night and really wasn't that all impressed with the transfer. It isn't the worst I've seen but it just didn't do a heck of a lot for me. Will compare it to the back up copy of my old Image dvd and see what I'm missing. Have to classify it as a disappointment.

EDIT: While the bd does look much better than my non anamorphic backup dvd the transfer is still just so so in my opinion. I know they had to work with the materials on hand but this isn't all that and a bag of chips.

I really like THE COMEBACK. It's got some very graphic murders, particularly that first one. And Walker constantly cuts back to that undiscovered body as it slowly rots. It's pretty damn disturbing. I'm looking forward to revisiting all these, those Media Blasters discs and SCHIZO were not much to look at.

We can’t I’m afraid other than that it’s imminent. We have to wait for the lab in Paris to prepare everything and then ship it to the States, and they can be,... a bit slow. Rollin is so tedious.

I have the Encore box-sets and some others, and he's tedious.

Aside from Night of the Hunted and Grapes of Death, he's tedious.

Even with all the flesh on display, he's tedious.

He is even more tedious when the flesh isn't on display.

The imagery is potent even though the films are tedious.

Will I like Rollin better on blu-ray?

Do high-definition transfers make his films less ... tedious?

Somebody advise me here.

Paul L
01-10-2013, 06:58 PM
I've been watching Rollin films on and off for twenty years, and would hesitantly agree. Some of them are tedious (on a narrative level) and carried by the imagery.

That said, have you seen THE IRON ROSE yet, Richard? It's a really poetic little film; I think you might like it. It's my favourite of his films by a country mile, followed by GRAPES OF DEATH and NIGHT OF THE HUNTED - a film I didn't like at first but which grew on me, thanks to the Encore release of a few years ago.

bgart13

I really didn't like THE IRON ROSE. Talk about... tedious! I like the other stuff of his I've got however (the Encore sets, most of the bds, etc.). The skin doesn't matter much to me -- in fact I get tired of it -- but I watch his stuff on my own (I get a lot of stink-eye from my partner when I leave Rollin movies out with the covers showing nudity, etc. :tsk: ).

Really? That's interesting. I loved it. I also like DEMONIACS a whole lot, but it's been quite a few years since I've seen that one.

There are a couple of Rollins which I own but haven't yet seen (THE ESCAPEES and SCHOOLGIRL HITCHHIKERS). His last few films were pretty awful, I always thought.

Apronikoff
01-10-2013, 07:36 PM
I'm with Paul on The Iron Rose. Rollin is my favorite Euro-Cult director, and The Iron Rose is my favorite of his by a wide margin (but I also adore Fascination, Lips of Blood, Living Dead Girl, Shiver and Requiem.) The only ones that I've seen and would ever describe as tedious would be Lost in New York, Rape of the Vampire, Schoolgirl Hitchhikers, and Mask of the Medusa. And even they had their moments that made me still ultimately enjoy them.

Paul L
01-10-2013, 07:40 PM
LIPS OF BLOOD is a good 'un too, Apronikoff. I haven't seen MASK OF THE MEDUSA yet, but based on his other latter-day films, I'm in no great hurry to catch up with it.

The first Rollin I saw was FASCINATION, via the Redemption VHS release in the early 1990s. That was a striking film, and then I saw LE VIOL DU VAMPIRE, which wasn't quite at the same level.

VAMPIRE NUE is a film I haven't seen since the Redemption VHS. I don't remember liking that one too much. I should revisit that film sometime soon.

Apronikoff
01-10-2013, 07:48 PM
I liked VAMPIRE NUE a lot better when I watched the blu-ray this year then I had at previous viewings. Still pretty flawed compared to the the vampire movies he made after, but it also has some of his most striking imagery.

On a purely visual level, the shadowy chase with the guys in the animal masks is one of my favorite sequences in his entire filmography.

Richard--W
01-11-2013, 07:52 PM
I have seen THE IRON ROSE, yes. I watched several Rollin DVDs in a two-day period and THE IRON ROSE was one of them. I'll have to look into that again. Growing up in the early 1970s, there was no chance to see a Rollin film in the USA. The Gotham Book Mart in NYC (I wonder if it's still there) used to get French film magazines, and I think the first time I saw a still from a Rollin film was in one of those magazines. Then Castle of Frankenstein printed some nude shots, then Cinefantastique when it was still published by Frederick Clark, then some years later issues of Midi-Minuit Fantastique found its way to these shores with more extensive coverage. I saw some posters and stills in the dealers room at Famous Monsters and Star Trek conventions. But the films themselves were not available to see until the VHS days in the late 1980s when I was too busy working to be aware of it. I didn't actually see a Rollin film, SHIVER OF THE VAMPIRES, on home video until the late 1990s. Until then he was like a legend, something to be anticipated.

Imagine my disappointment. The director's imagery was palpable, potent and Gothically perverse, but unsupported by the slightest storytelling ability. I thought he'd make a better still photographer of erotic and fetish and Gothic scenes than a filmmaker. I actually found the films annoying because there was no story or characterization to engage me. I came up through the theater and film, and I need a story.

However, I do see more merit in Rollin's work than I used to, thanks to the Encore editions. I plan to take another look soon.

Randy G
01-12-2013, 04:01 AM
Rollin and tedium is like Franco and zooms. It comes with the territory. He certainly is no master storyteller but then neither is Herzog, Zulawski or Antonioni.

I really liked THE IRON ROSE but fell asleep 2/3rds of the way through (like I said). I'm going to pick up the BR for sure.

Wllm Clys
01-12-2013, 05:11 AM
I think The Iron Rose is a masterpiece. So are Shiver Of The Vampires and Lips Of Blood. To me it doesn't matter that his stories (if you can call them that) are always ultra-thin, it's all about mood and poetry. Heck, I can even tolerate the bad acting in all of his films.

s.chivers
01-12-2013, 06:07 AM
I think 'trance-like' (or 'trance-inducing') is more accurate than 'tedious', and I also think the reference to Antonioni is revealing. Films like Red Desert and Zabriskie Point don't really engage on a narrative level, but to me are almost endlessly re-watchable. I feel exactly the same about the first 6 or 7 Rollin's.

Ian Jane
01-13-2013, 04:00 PM
I can see why people would think that Rollin's work is tedious, but I prefer the term hypnotic. True that there's not a whole lot going on in terms of narrative (though there are exceptions throughout his filmography) but his movies put me in a bit of a trance. It's almost like he's captured a strange dream on celluloid and taken me along for the ride. On that level, it doesn't have to make sense and there doesn't have to be a story because for me, it's more of an experience than a story. Maybe more so than any other filmmaker I approach Rollin's work in a different way. I've seen the vast majority of his films, most more than once, and each time I sit down with a Rollin movie I zone out. Not out of boredom, but because his movies take me to a different place.

Randy G
01-13-2013, 05:39 PM
Totally, I find the films hypnotic myself but can see why others would find them tedious. In that way Rollin definitely belongs to a Euro/art house tradition of very slow-paced filmmakers, not only Antonioni but but Tarkovsky, Bela Tarr and even the Gerry/Elephant/Last Days films of Gus Van Sant.

I think that Franco and Rollin's best films blur that line between Euroarthouse and exploitation film.

5 Dolls for an August Moon (Mario Bava, 1970)
Kidnapped (Mario Bava, 1974)
Four Times That Night (Mario Bava, 1972)
Hatchet for the Honeymoon (Mario Bava, 1970)
