View Full Version : Bizzaro Celebrity Albums!

A few beers into last night I decided to listen to the Robert Mitchum 'Calypso Is Like So' album while hanging out in the living room in my underwear. This got me thinking about other bizarre celebrity albums. Mitchum actually put out two LPs, the calypso album and one of more traditional crooner material where he covers Little Ol' Wine Drinker Me and Sunnie and actually does them rather well. Hearing him do calypso songs with the accent and everything is a bit more fun though.

I'll fully admit that I own and like John Travolta Sings. It's not really bizarre, I suppose, but, I don't know...shut up, Todd.

Another one I'm really fond of is the Jack Palance record. He does a song called The Meanest Guy Who Ever Lived that's just completely epic and was, according to the liner notes, at one point sort of being groomed as a country artist. He does another song called Goodbye Lucy that's all about his sexual conquests, or lack thereof, and he even covers The Green, Green Grass of Home.

Word. I think the weirdest one I've heard is Zebedy Colt's I Sing For You, in which he croons out weird gay versions of fairly traditional love songs. It's campy just because it is what it is, but Zebedy actually turns out to have a fairly decent voice. It's odd to see a porn star you so associate with a role (in this case a hetero one and a freakishly out there one - Sex Wish) crooning away about how great his man is. It's pretty awesome.

He also was (is) a big Joey Lawrence fan.

This is a subject that fascinates me. The first one I thought of was Telly Savalas, but Ian beat me to it! He actually put out two or three albums. A lot of the records I have or can think of aren't really bizarro (for instance, Richard Roundtree is a good singer), but I wanted to contribute what info I could to the thread. Here's some of my records that I had photos of already-
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/5954/celebrityrecords.jpg
Barbara Bouchet (45)
Brigitte Bardot - Special Bardot (Rare, wasn't sold in stores. Promotional only tie-in for her 1968 tv special)
Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg
Bill Cosby - Hooray For The Salvation Army Band! (Psychedelic/Funk - He does a Purple Haze 'cover', but the lyrics are about the Salvation Army!)
Shelley Fabares
David McCallum - Music: It's Happening Now! (He put out four albums in the late 60s. I have all of them and they're good 'Pop Psych'. If you guys know David Axelrod, he was involved so some tracks are more Psych-y than others)
Richard Roundtree - The Man From Shaft (Soul/Funk)
John Travolta (This album is pretty well known with diggers/DJs because there's a long drum break on 'A Girl Like You')

There's a bunch of others I can think of. Some of these put out singles and not whole albums..

Caroline Munro (one single was a Gary Numan song)
Florinda Bolkan
Lynda Carter
Cheryl Ladd
Marisa Mell
Elsa Martinelli
Tiffany Bolling
Senta Berger
Joey Heatherton
Richard Chamberlain
Vince Edwards
Greg Evigan (with Paul Shaffer)
Mae West ('Way Out West' album doing Rock covers)
Wolfman Jack
David Soul
Jack Wagner
Connie Stevens
Kristy & Jimmy McNichol
Alfred Hitchcock ('Music To Be Murdered By')
Ann-Margret

Gary Busey and Chevy Chase were both in late 60's Rock groups that put albums out ('Carp' and 'Chamaeleon Church')

Ian Jane
10-29-2011, 09:57 AM
Did Hitchcock sing on that album? If so, I need to find that.

When I was in Junior High, one of the guys in my circle of friends picked up this gem on cassette:

http://www.maidenwine.com/08_discography/CD_GoldenThroats_01.jpg

For those unfamiliar with it, it collects such beauties as Shatner doing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Jack "Dragnet" Webb doing "Try a Little Tenderness" and Mae West doing "Twist and Shout."

We made something of a game of it. If the tape was in your possession you had to try to give it away to one of the others. Since none of us would voluntarily accept a copy of Golden Throats, that meant you had to conceal it somehow, by putting it in a fast-food bag, hiding it in your friend's stuff, or giving it to someone with a different cover shoved in front. If you found that you'd inadvertently taken possession of Golden Throats, you were required to listen to it all the way through before you tried to give it away again.

When the game finally petered out, it was in my possession. So I suppose, in a sense, I lost the game. But in another, better, sense, I won the game because -- hey, free copy of Golden Throats!

The Wings album is a cracker, mid-70's funky folk rock-ish, apart from a couple of covers of songs by people like Jimmy Webb and Randy Newman most of the songs are self penned (one, The Old West, turns up on the soundtrack to The Art Of Dying). Must have been made when he was dabbling with Scientology as it has an L. Ron Hubbard dedication. Think the Phoebe Cates LP only came out in Japan, pretty bland early 80's MOR pop ballads sadly, with a rather insipid cover of Son Of A Preacher Man a lowlight...
