VARIETY (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118046503): Robert Hall's Dry County Entertainment is hanging out at a "Chopping Mall," acquiring the remake rights to the '80s horror title.Hall and producing partner Kevin Bocarde will produce and write. Hall is also coming on to direct, with lensing to begin in spring. The original "Chopping Mall" was produced by Roger Corman and his wife Julie. It centered around a group of teenagers who become trapped in a shopping mall with killer robots.Bocarde said the new movie won't be a straight remake. "It will retain the basic concept of young people trapped in a mall; however, the story will have a darker, supernatural spin," he explained.Recent remakes of Corman's films include the Jason Statham starrer "Death Race," last year's "Piranha" and the upcoming "Piranha 3D."Hall noted that he had started in show business at Corman's studio. "This is an exciting way to pay homage and honor Roger while also expanding the original film's premise," he said.

Maybe, now, this'll pave the way for a better DVD release of the original.

"Supernatural spin." Yargh. I like robots run amok. Kiss my Asimov.

Yeah, I kind of wish they had stuck with the science run amok angle, too. It'll probably be some kind of possession angle with some dude hacking people up. Yawn.

Sometimes when I go to the mall I want to hack people up.

I used to feel that way when I worked at Service Merchandise back in the mid-90s. Unbelievable how packed a mall gets around the holidays. I remember having to park my car on the other side, because it was the only place I could find a parking spot. Holidays at the mall could really benefit from some "Killbots," I think. That would make a great movie! A future time when "Killbots" are only used during the holidays, to keep the masses under control as they shop, but, as usual, "something goes terribly wrong." I wish they had made a franchise out of CHOPPING MALL. Haven't seen the movie since childhood. Now I want to.

I wish they had made a franchise out of CHOPPING MALL.

Which part in the series would have them in space? Jason is ten, Hellraiser and Leprechaun are both four, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm St are thirteen and nine, respectively.

I don't know, but it would, obviously, be an origin tale where we find out the "killbots" are alien machinery some "evil corporation" has gotten the plans to, and are exploiting them here on Earth. I mean, that's just a given.

I think Part 2 would have been the one. Just go right to it. Jason took ten? Fuck him.

I'm with Todd on this one. Get to it, go straight into space and don't fuck around.

Thanks Ian. With your powers of the internet, I think our opinion will overcome reason.

I'm not gonna completely jump on the band wagon and say it should be the sequel, I'd like them to build up to it. Do a couple of flicks where the killbots have a character arc. In one they could learn to speak and play chess, then in another battle the fairy world for domination. And in another, conqueror the porn industry where they get outfitted with all kinds of sexual devices. And, then, do the space movie, where they are pitted against Warwick Davis and his band of alien leprechauns.

Your ideas have potential.

I want the killbots in space origin story to show their home planet, where they're ruled by intelligent vending machines. They start a rebellion, but lose and have to leave the planet in search of food. They find Earth and delicious humans.

And then they get into the porn industry. C'mon, they were made for that. See, on their home planet they didn't have porn, didn't know what it was. When they learn, they can't get enough. And they eat more people in the process. I mean in the non-sexual way, too.

We should go the TV series route with this. Too many good ideas.
