Apparantly (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57348635-10391698/van-halen-announces-2012-tour-with-david-lee-roth/) they've got Roth fronting them again for a reunion tour this coming year.

Apparently they were much better than The Police reunion, which consisted of the same setlist almost every night.

I probably won't catch them though considering what the price the tickets will be.

Not interested in the slightest. Ed and co. haven't been interesting since the 80's. This is a big nostalgia cash in, which, if they can pull it off, more power to them - but it will probably suck. Reviews of the last time these guys hit the road together were not great; they played to mixed reviews, and reports of Ed's unfocused noodlings on the guitar. Sad for a guy who was once a trailblazer, but who is now content to be a power drinker.

Say what you will about Hagar, but he seems happy, and he's rich , thanks to good investments and using his head. I don't care for his music, but I respect that he distanced himself from these clowns.

I remember that. Go Sammy!

I'm kinda with Zane on this though. I LOVED Van Halen in the 80s when I was a kid and the albums still hold up for me but this'll be expensive and more than likely pretty lame.

Yeah, I just can't see this being good. Ed used to be an amazing guitarist, but no more.

Come to think of it, the only thing I would go see with that included Ed would be if him and Shane McGowan toured. They could call it the Toothless and Clueless tour! Except for the fact that McGowan is probably more coherent and talented than EVH.

Who knows it might be good. Maybe Sammy will come down from the rafters in a cardboard spaceship and join Davie in singing Panama.

Hrm... every interview I read with the Hagar seems to be him talking about how he'd love to be in VH again.

East Village Radio posted a clip of them doing Panama from the NYC club show they did last night.

Evidently a new album, with Roth on vocals, is due in Feb. called A Different Kind Of Truth.

I'm still not as excited about this as I'd like to be.

Wow. Sorry for fans of the band. Roth sounds terrible.

Indeed. I don't think I would walk across the street to see these guys. Blah on the music front.

It should also be interesting to see if these guys can successfully tour together again. They all have massive egos, and it makes you wonder if this will be the mess that happened when these guys toured together last time. You know, Diamond Dave's voice will be shot, Ed will be inconsistent, and the rest of the original band (read: Michael Anthony) will not be there, in favor of Ed's son playing bass, which in and of itself is an odd choice. A middling musician at best playing in a band with his washed up Dad and his washed up friends. Van Halen kinda seem destined to be the punchline of an unfunny rock n roll joke.

When I see bands like Motörhead (who are awesome) putting on great live shows and still churning out albums (albeit not masterpieces all the time, and I'm a fan) it makes me wonder what VH's excuse is.

They've played Tattoo on the radio twice in the past hour. The beginning is pretty good, but Dave sounds off. The choruses are ok, but outside of that...meh.

We used to always joke that when Van Halen toured they would bring a crappy opening act along just to make the crowd appreciate them all the more. When I saw the band in '79, the opening act was Robert Fleischman (who was the singer for Journey for a time in the late 70s so I suppose he had some cred, but really...Robert Fleischman? -- we had no idea who the hell that was). In '81 the opening band was The Fools, who to this day I have no idea who the hell they were.

Wow, that was wierd. Were The Fools some sort of song parody band? I honestly don't remember much about them other than as a bunch of 16 year olds waiting to see Van Halen we thought they were properly monikered.

That's the only song I know by them. I think they're local (Boston), but, well, I'm sure their disappearance isn't unwarranted.

Psycho Chicken, haha, I can't remember ever hearing it, but I remember the joke, so I guess I must've. Dr. Demento, maybe?

Anyone check this out yet? K-Rod's rockin' it on Spotify right now, so am I.

First track - Tattoo - meh. Dave's voice is holding up better than I thought that it would. This isn't embarassingly awful.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 11:54 AM
She's The Woman - this is decent.

You and Your Blues - this is not so decent, it kinda stinks.

China Town - OK, Dave sounds good here, guitar is thick and strong, I kinda like this.

Paul Casey
02-07-2012, 11:57 AM
The other ones I've heard are The Trouble With Never and Big River (I think). TTWN is weird and Dave's voice and outbursts sound awful. I think I heard Big River (I know I heard the name), but maybe the one I heard was a different one. The one I heard sounded like it could've been off of Diver Down. I dug it.

Blood And Fire - this should be more rockin than it is with a title like that but it builds fairly well.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:06 PM
Bullethead - Dave sounds kinda goofy here, but not to the point where it's ruining the song for me. This album is definitely better than I thought it would be (but I had low expectations). This one is fast, quick, to the point. Not bad at all.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:12 PM
As Is - nice guitar sound early on, great playing from Eddie. Dave is kinda spazzy here, but Dave's always kinda spazzy, that's half his charm. The yeah yeah yeah over and over at the end is a little overdone but Eddie saves this one.

Roderick
02-07-2012, 12:13 PM
I've given it a couple of spins now and have to say it's better than I expected- especially after hearing the first single which turns out to be the worst song on the record. There are some pretty chunky bits on the album, but I'd say it easily bests the entire Van Hagar discography.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:15 PM
Honeybabysweetiedoll - what's with the 'sexy Dave' whispering half way in? This one is kinda weird. It's definintely noisy, and I kinda like that about it.

Roderick
02-07-2012, 12:18 PM
I like those Dave talking bits. It's like Dave in Shatner mode.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:19 PM
The Trouble With Never - the last track leads into this one nicely, pretty slick sounding. This album is actually shaping up to be pretty solid.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:22 PM
Outta Space - I don't like the name of this song, but again, Eddie's playing is really good here and Dave's not so far out of his league vocally that he sounds awful or anything. Maybe a bit stressed at the beginning but I guess that's probably the point. As goofy as some of this stuff is, it's good to hear Eddie and Dave together again.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:25 PM
Stay Frosty - they had to work in one goofy blues song, and evidently this is it. Or at least it starts off that way. Kinda reminds me of Ice Cream Man a bit that way. Also it's about something cold, so it's kind of conceptually linked (I'm reaching, I realize).

Roderick
02-07-2012, 12:28 PM
I need to listen to this more when the relief of it not sucking has worn off. I'm stoked this doesn't stink like the Stooges reunion record. Or those Alice Cooper band tracks.

Roderick

Yeah, I think of the first part of the song as Ice Cream Man 2: The Lickening. Then it gets sassy and rocks out with its socks out.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:33 PM
Big River - not the best track on the album but yeah, this is solid. I got interupted by work while trying to listen to it, will spin it again later.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:35 PM
Beats Workin' - now does this beat working? As in I'd rather rock out than work a desk job? Or are these beats workin' as in our rock is gonna make you shake it? Either way, I'm game. This song could use better old school VH harmonies I think but all in all it's pretty good and the guitar makes me think of Feel Your Love.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 12:36 PM

The irony being that had you lined up those three bands and said 'pick the one most likely to put out a shitty record' I've have pointed to Van Halen. Good on them for pulling this off.

The Weirdness still sucks.

You guys don't think Dave sounds too saliva-y like his false teeth keep slipping? I can't really get past that.

Ian Jane
02-07-2012, 01:56 PM
Honestly Dave sounds about how I expected Dave to sound. A little fried, straining in spots, but pretty energetic and enthusiastic - and dopey. Age is creeping into his sound for sure though, but it didn't bug me.

One thing I noticed about the upcoming tour is that there's never two "on" days in a row. Probabaly not a bad idea -- to let DLR recover his voice, recharge the ol' batteries, etc.

Tom K
03-11-2012, 01:01 PM
My first impression of this album is that it is good...I don't like how compressed sounding it is...Needs to be "hotter"...and I miss Anthony's harmonies as well...But I like it more than anything that Hagar did with them...

A few of my friends went and seen them and we kind of so-so on it...not worth the ticket price...They are playing here again in April...not sure if I'm going to go, but I never seen VH so I just may go for the hell of it...

VH is summertime music for me...the real test will be when it is time to sit in the yard and slug beers with friends to see how it holds up...But so far, I dig...
