Looks like ol' blue eyes would like those three gals to blow somethin', and it sure as hell ain't his horn.

I've got "Assault On A Queen" on my DVR right now (taped off TCM if I remember correctly). I haven't it had a chance to watch it yet, but it looks like a worthy, classic action/heist movie.

I had some time to watch whatever I wanted last night, so I went ahead and played the recording of "Assault On A Queen" that was on my DVR. With a Rod Serling screenplay based on a Jack Finney novel one would expect greatness, but I get the feeling the whole thing sounded better on paper than what played out on the screen. The plot involving a group of treasure hunters unearthing a German U-Boat, restoring it and using it to rob the Queen Mary on the high seas is as preposterous as it sounds. Adding to the problems are relatively flat acting and direction. On the other hand, Tony Franciosa plays it pretty cool, Virna Lisi looks like a million bucks, and you've got a submarine. Despite the film's overall mediocrity I would still recommend to fans of 60s cinema and classic heist movies.

This should have starred Roddy McDowall.

Ian Jane

Yes it should. I didn't realize it's also coming out on Blu-ray too. So you can get Frank Sinatra as a fake ass Roddy McDowell in high definition if you want.

The chick on the left kinda looks like Blanche from The Golden Girls.

THE LAWLESS has been pretty rare, I don't think it's had any kind of home video release. TCM has run it, caught it on there a couple years ago. More Gail Russell on dvd is always a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

More definite info for Olive releases were posted at HTF this afternoon/evening, including William Castle's PROJECT X, THE SPACE CHILDREN, and COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK (all in June). It was also confirmed that THE BOOGENS will indeed get released on bd and dvd this summer. DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS will be released either later this year or sometime next year. I hope Olive can get the FF commentary for DR. TERROR from ABUK.

More rare westerns getting released is always welcome with me. This one sounds a little like the Burt Lancaster film LAWMAN - lawman must arrest wanted killer who's protected by the entire town. Curtiz as director also intrigues me.

Ian Jane

I don't know anything about that one but it's got Tina Louise and Jack Lord, it's got to be marginally interesting if only for those reasons.

Home Theater Forum is reporting that Olive is going to be releasing High Noon and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers on Blu-ray 7/17/2012.

HELL. YES. I will be adding both of these to my collection with a big dopey smile on my face.

I'd love to see Body Snatchers get loads and loads of extra feature love but it doesn't look like any are planned. High Noon is listed as having a making of and the trailer (though seems to be missing the extras from the Lionsgate SE DVD). The same thread notes that Olive says Johnny Guitar is also coming soon.

It would be really nice with some extra features (someone on another board mentioned that a lot of extras were actually produced for a SE of Invasion some years back that never materialized). But just the thought of getting a decent transfer of Invasion gets my pulse up. I am going to buy it anyway.

I'm probably good for a copy of Force Of Evil, not too concerned with the other two.

Ian, I'd say that Polonsky's BODY & SOUL is just as good as FORCE OF EVIL, if not slightly better - if you haven't seen it already, that is :)

Found this post on Home Theater Forum, the poster was Walter O. I think it's Walter Olsen of Scorpion Releasing, and I think we BOOGENS fans need to thank him for pulling this commentary together: "Well I must confession I am the "guilty one" here, as I know the people down Olive Film, and I know Rebecca Balding and James Conway personally, so I offered to record a commentary with them and the writer, and I hope you will enjoy the results! Olive Films has done extras in the past, and their up coming NIGHT OF THE GRIZZLY has a featurette with Clint Walker, so check it out!"

FORCE OF EVIL and BODY AND SOUL are great films but they've already been released on dvd...or are those BDs? I would grab FORCE ..for sure if so.

Btw, I highly recommend WAC's release of the Garfield picture THE BREAKING POINT. It's a remake of TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT that's closer to the source and is a really brutal noir. Great performance by Garfield too.

Yeah I think FORCE OF EVIL, and BODY AND SOUL are going to be Blu-rays too, I'll pick them up for sure, these must be some of the Replublic titles they are starting to roll out. Can't wait for a blu of JOHNNY GUITAR.

Never seen the Ladd film and it's supposed to be really good. MY SON JOHN is a fascinating product of its time anticommie film.

THE DARK MIRROR is one I've wanted to see for a long time, in fact it might be the one film I flagged as interesting early on in my movie watching that has still eluded me. Just never managed to catch up with it.

The Trap (1959) was shot in VistaVision, meaning a widescreen image captured through spherical lenses. It's going to look sharp and detailed and with rich color on Blu-ray. Think North By Northwest. That quality image. It's a good country-crime noir, too.

I would not have turned the plane upside down on the new cover art, however.

NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 2 (pictured), the Brian Trenchard-Smith-directed follow-up to Kevin Tenney’s cult favorite, gets the dual-format release February 19 from Olive Films. Amelia Kinkade returns as the demonic Angela, making Halloween night hell for another group of young people (this time from a religious school) who make the mistake of partying at Hull House. With impressive makeup and monster FX by Steve Johnson, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 2 will be presented in 1.78 anamorphic widescreen on the discs, with audio commentary by Trenchard-Smith and cinematographer David Lewis. The same day, Olive also issues a new DVD and Blu-ray of writer/director Fred Dekker and co-scripter Shane Black’s THE MONSTER SQUAD, remastered in HD at 2.35:1 widescreen but with no special features announced. Retail prices for each title are $19.95 for the DVD, $29.95 for the Blu-ray.

Never seen this, it seems to be pretty rare, this will be the first home video release of any kind over here anyway. Sounds good too, and Dana Andrews and Donald Pleasence are in the cast as well. Maltin says well made but heavy doses of sadism and violence...he sure knows how to tease me, haha.

I'm way behind with the Olive Films releases, mostly because they seem quite costly to import over here. However, would anyone care to offer comment on their releases of SILVER CITY, MAN TRAP, UPTIGHT or RUN FOR COVER? I've never seen any of those pictures before, and would like to know which of these would offer the best 'blind buy' for this month, please.

Richard--W
01-06-2013, 07:50 PM
I haven't watched MAN TRAP yet and won't be getting UPTIGHT.

RUN FOR COVER (1955) is a redemption plot from the director of Rebel Without a Cause and a sturdy, above-average western of the period that will fill your widescreen monitor very nicely with splendid scenery in a rich, slightly muted color. Cagney and Derek play off each very well. Cagney invests his role with a cold empathy and such conviction. Buy it. SILVER CITY (1951) and DENVER & RIO GRANDE (1952) both involve beating the competition and are more than just vehicles for Edmond O'Brien. The former explores the ins and outs of frontier mining more than any other western I know of, and it retains a little of Luke Short's brilliant plotting and savvy dialogue, but only a little. DENVER & RIO GRANDE is a film for period train buffs that manages to generate some suspense. Good-looking color westerns in the forties Hollywood mode. Don't expect the character-driven anguish of an Anthony Mann western and you won't be disappointed. I like them, and I recommend them. They are directed by Byron Haskin with intelligence, skill and style. I recommend Frank Perry's noirish murder-mystery MAN ON A SWING which was one of the best films of 1975. One other Olive Films blu-ray I recommend is the noir-western PURSUED (1948).

Paul L
01-06-2013, 07:58 PM
Thanks, Richard. I think I'll plump for RUN FOR COVER this month. I love Cagney and Ray, and I've never seen this film (at least, that I can remember), so it should be a solid purchase.

PURSUED is excellent. I've got the old French DVD release from a few years back, which I've been more than happy with. I'm tempted by the Olive Films Blu-ray and will most likely upgrade to it at some point - Howe's cinematography on that film is gorgeous, I've always thought.

Andrew Monroe
01-07-2013, 10:25 AM
I'll second the nods for DENVER & RIO GRANDE and SILVER CITY - neither is anything groundbreaking but they're very solid westerns and particularly worth a watch if you like Edmund O'Brien, he's in both and both directed by Byron Haskin. DENVER & RIO GRANDE has some top notch train-set action, always a plus for me. RUN FOR COVER is quite possibly Cagney's best western, this one is a real sleeper ripe for rediscovery. Another good western Olive released is THE JAYHAWKERS, starring the unjustly forgotten Jeff Chandler.

Richard--W
01-07-2013, 01:18 PM
I second the recommendation for THE JAYHAWKERS (1959). I'd never seen it before so the Olive blu-ray was a blind buy for me. A respectable, engaging and unpretentious western nicely transferred. Fess Parker was a bit stiff but an authentic western presence.

HELL'S HALF ACRE and CHINA GATE are essential 1950s films. It's almost too good to be true, to get these sleepers on a blu-ray.

The young & early John Wayne programmers are long overdue in good quality, and most welcome. But I have to question the ethics of Olive in issuing these 55-60 minute shoestring-budgeters individually. $20 is high for a short film that's low in production value. For the price being charged, customers deserve at least a double-feature. Olive could easily fit three films per disc without compromising quality, or even four films. There is such a thing as being too greedy.

I'll want THE ENFORCER, HOODLUM EMPIRE, and CLOAK AND DAGGER for sure. Man, Olive is gonna drain my bank account. Not to mention HELL'S HALF ACRE, RUTHLESS, and CHINA GATE coming in a couple weeks. Sheesh...oh, and DEVIL AND MISS JONES too, at least these aren't limited editions and purchases can be staggered out.

I've never seen NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW (assuming it's the 95 film)...I am a sucker for scarecrow horror films though. Anyone care to testify on its behalf? I assume it can't hold a candle to SCARECROWS (otherwise it'd set them on fire!).

It was (and may still be) streaming on Netflix awhile back. It's a Jeff Burr picture so, I would say, it's on the same level as Leatherface and Pumpkinhead 2. Direct to video, 90s shoddiness for sure (with cheaply animated FX and a wonky scarecrow outfit) but I watched it all the way through and enjoyed it! Martine Beswick and Bruce Glover have small parts for it's worth. I'll probably get it since it'll look good between my Night of the Demons collection and Scarecrow stuff.

Yeah, not as good as Scarecrow but better than Jack-O.

So I guess this week's Olive titles seem to be delayed? I pre-ordered DEVIL AND MISS JONES, HELL'S HALF ACRE, RUTHLESS, and CHINA GATE and none have shipped. Unusual for Olive, and naturally these are among my most anticipated of what they've released so far.

I saw elsewhere that Olive mentioned that some of their retailers have experienced shipping delays with these new titles but the situation should be resolved any day. And my stuff from Import CDs did ship, now just waiting on the other order.

In other Olive news, someone at the BAN forums who's usually very reliable in regards to Olive scuttlebutt has posted that they acquired THE BIG COMBO and will be releasing it on blu sometime this year! Great news if this pans out, one of the noir giants imo.

I was rereading the Psychotronic Encyclopedia review for THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN last night, some of the cameos sound very funny:

- Yul Brynner in drag singing "Mad About The Boy" to a nervous Roman Polanski.

- Christopher Lee as a vampire running in slow motion.

- Laurence Harvey doing a striptease while performing Hamlet.

The soundtrack is by Thunderclap Newman and Badfinger.

While it's supposed to be very hit-and-miss, this sounds like a hoot!

I've become a big Carroll Baker fan over the years, mainly from her eurotrash stuff, but this really appeals to me. And wtf is Raf Vallone doing in this?!? I've been looking forward to CRY VENGEANCE since I heard about it, Ian. Haven't seen it before; the director and star, Mark Stevens, was in THE DARK CORNER (released as part of the Fox noir line), a cracking good private eye noir. He was outstanding in that film as a man who's "dead inside". The really exciting thing about CRY VENGEANCE is that some noir references refer to it as a sequel of sorts to THE DARK CORNER, with Stevens playing an even more tortured and driven character.

"However, as both director and star in CRY VENGEANCE, Stevens adds further levels of psychic and physical suffering. Vic Barron is literally and figuratively "eating himself up inside"." - Film Noir The Encyclopedia

"Danny Kaye (Knock on Wood) headlines this wacky WWII comedy he plays a timid American soldier, Private Ernie Williams who bears a striking resemblance to a famous British Colonel. The Military Intelligence decides to use the poor chap as a pawn and recruit the naive soldier to impersonate the legendary Colonel, who's highly targeted by the Nazi assassins. Co-starring Dana Wynter (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) as the Colonel's suspicious wife, Diana Dors (Blonde Sinner) as the Colonel's personal driver and mistress, Margaret Rutherford (Agatha Christie's Miss Marple) as the Colonel's crazy aunt, Jesse White (It's Only Money) as Ernie best friend and Wilfrid Hyde White (My Fair Lady) as the Colonel overseeing the mission. This zany action-comedy with classic Danny Kaye routines was directed by Melville Shavelson (The Five Pennies). "

Off Limits (1953) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJ5IQLS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00DJ5IQLS&linkCode=as2&tag=cognitrespon-20)

"Off Limits is the first and only teaming of comedy legends Bob Hope (My Favorite Spy) and Mickey Rooney (The Atomic Kid). Bob Hope plays a boxing trainer who loses his one and only champion to the draft and decides to enlist, so he could keep an eye on his prized fighter. He is left holding the laces when his boxer is discharged - until enlisted private and amateur boxer Herbert Tuttle (Rooney) asks Bob to train him. Bob is more interested in Tuttle's aunt (Marilyn Maxwell, Rock-A-Bye Baby) than actually training the young contender. This screwball comedy was directed by George Marshall (Fancy Pants). "

Browsing Amazon Espanol, I notice that a company over there (Llamentol) has been releasing on Blu-ray many of the same films as Olive. Does anyone know if these discs contain the same transfers (I'm assuming they do)? They're much cheaper for European buyers!

http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/546/rcj7.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/rcj7.jpg/)http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/854/5ieh.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/5ieh.jpg/)http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/854/j7hn.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/j7hn.jpg/)http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/855/2vc4.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/2vc4.jpg/)http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/850/n7w9.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/n7w9.jpg/)http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/203/rwn0.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/203/rwn0.jpg/)

I've ordered three of these (SCARLET STREET, FORCE OF EVIL, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) to test the waters. (I covet those Olive discs and buy them when I can, but factoring in shipping to the UK they work out at almost twice the price of these Spanish BDs.)

SLEEP, MY LOVE (1948) sounds routine:

Alison Courtland wakes up in the middle of the night on board a train,
but she cannot remember how she got there. Danger and suspense ensue.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040798/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_52

but it is directed by Douglas Sirk, and his films are never routine. What he puts in front of the camera, dramatically and aesthetically, is always incisive and inventive. For example There's Always Tomorrow (1956) is a story about an unappreciated married man who strays into a romantic affair with a former employee. Sounds routine, but the acting is a clinic, and the emphasis falls in unexpected places. Although shot monochrome, Sirk's application of jagged patterns, sharp angles and diagonal lines in the wardrobe and set design suggested, even before the ending, how the affair would turn out. Every aspect of the film is rigidly controlled to express the subtext of the story. Sirk was a maestro. Not enough of his films are on blu-ray. Noe of his acknowleged masterpieces are on blu-ray, either. This is one blind-buy I know I won't be disappointed in.

SLEEP, MY LOVE, from what I've read, sounds a little like GASLIGHT or Max Ophuls' CAUGHT. Don Ameche tries to drive wife Claudette Colbert crazy. I usually like stuff like that, and with Sirk directing I think I'll get it too. Tempted by UP THE JUNCTION too, seemingly one of the British "kitchen sink" dramas. I'm pretty fond of Suzy Kendall. Much as I love Anthony Mann, MEN IN WAR isn't one of my favorites so I'll probably stick with my TCM copy. The Losey film would normally intrigue me but I'm not much of a fan of Paul Muni.

From the look of some of those covers it seems Olive is moving away from the poster art to something more arty. I hope they stick with those classy posters for the film noir stuff.

Sleep, My Love is certainly what I'd term a Gaslight clone. The main problem is with the script which in my opinion drains away some of the suspense by revealing the villain's identity quite early. The lead trio of Cummings, Colbert and Ameche are OK without being all that remarkable. Raymond Burr and George Coulouris are much more interesting and we need to see more of them.
Sirk's visuals are a treat though and the atmosphere is intriguing. Oh, and Hazel Brooks smoulders to the point she almost burns a hole right through the screen.

Wow, thanks for that still, Colin. I'm definitely adding this one to my to-buy list. If nothing else (and a GASLIGHT clone is already of interest), the photography looks to be stunning. I don't feel like I revealed a spoiler by mentioning the villain as Leonard Maltin details this in his Classic Movie Guide, I assumed it must be revealed early. Hazel Brooks looks like a tall glass of vavavoom there...holy cow. I remember her from BODY AND SOUL but this is a whole new level.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 12, 2014

OLIVE FILMS RELEASES THE GROUND-BREAKING DRAMA THE PAWNBROKER ON BLU-RAY(TM) AND DVD APRIL 22, 2014

Newly Remastered in HD and on Blu-ray(TM) for the First Time!

CHICAGO, IL - Olive Films releases one of the landmarks of American cinema, The Pawnbroker on Blu-ray(TM) and DVD April 22nd. Directed by Academy-Award®-winner (Honorary Award 2005) Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon) and released in 1964, it was the first cinematic exploration of the darkest memories and feelings of a Holocaust survivor. Filmed in stark black and white, it was also the first film approved by the Production Code that contained nudity. Newly remastered in HD for this release, The Pawnbroker is also being honored with a special screening as part of the 2014 TCM Film Festival. SRP is $29.95 for the Blu-ray(TM), and $19.95 for the DVD.

Rod Steiger (In the Heat of the Night) earned a 1965 Best Actor Oscar® nomination for his stunning performance as Sol Nazerman, a survivor of a WWII Nazi death camp where his wife, parents and children were murdered. His soul robbed of hope, he takes refuge in misery and a bitter condemnation of humanity while managing a Harlem pawnshop subjected to an endless parade of prostitutes, pimps and thieves. Jamie Sanchez (The Wild Bunch) plays Ortiz, Sol's underprivileged and idealistic assistant who dreams of a better life. The Pawnbroker features evocative black-and-white cinematography by the great Boris Kaufman (On the Waterfront), a memorable jazz-influenced score by the legendary composer/producer Quincy Jones and a stellar supporting cast also including Geraldine Fitzgerald (Wuthering Heights), Brock Peters (To Kill a Mockingbird), Raymond St. Jacques (Cotton Comes to Harlem) as well as the debut of a very young Morgan Freeman.

Steiger received rave reviews for his performance as the cynical Nazerman and the actor would cite that role as a stand-out among his impressive body of work. The film went on to be selected in 2008 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Fifty years after its initial release, The Pawnbroker still stands as a truly historic piece of filmmaking whose influence and compassion is still felt today.

What Warner Brothers title(s) has/have Olive released? I thought they've only licensed from Paramount/Republic.
