Has anybody got this? Just last night I saw this on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/American-Ninja-Revenge-Rage-Honor/dp/B004CJQVP8/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1330821835&sr=1-1), it's been out since 2010, and there's a review at the bottom that states the unbelievable! It says the version of REVENGE OF THE NINJA included here is widescreen?! Whhhaaaaat?! Can anybody confirm or deny that reviewer's claim? If this is so, I NEED to get it ASAP!

If this is INDEED certain we then have Sho Kosugi's Holy Three on DVD and in their original aspect ratio: ENTER THE NINJA, REVENGE OF THE NINJA and the upcoming MOD PRAY FOR DEATH!

Huh. It's cheap here, too. Might check it out. I actually don't own a copy of American Ninja yet.

Dear God, buy it, Mark. I NEED to know. Just found out, DVD Pacific has it for $4.00 bucks. If you can confirm the REVENGE letterboxing, I'll order it when Pacific get's another movie I'm waiting for.

Kay. Haha Only cause you said so, though. It's bought. I had to pay for shipping, but it was under 10 bucks. For 3 movies, why the fuck not? I should know this week. I might even do some fuckin screencaps for ya.

Shawn Francis
03-03-2012, 11:37 PM
Excellent. Yeah, 3 flicks for $4.00 bucks is an astounding bargain, even more so if REVENGE is really widescreen. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this collection anywhere. How did this get under the radar? I hear RAGE is widescreen, but the review on Amazon says it doesn't look kosher. No matter, I want this for REVENGE and to some degree for AMERICAN NINJA, too.

Shawn Francis

It's a shame MGM full screened all the subsequent sequels to AMERICAN NINJA. I really like the second one, too. Christ, I saw both of them in theater.

Mark Tolch
03-03-2012, 11:39 PM
Well, i'm wondering. I don't remember the transfer for REVENGE off of the other disc...was it Pan and scan, or was it open matte? This could be widescreen, or the open matte matted properly,, or matted P&S. I guess i'll find out.

The original DVD is indeed Full Frame.

Strange, I actually thought it was Widescreen before popping it in. Well, I guess this is my excuse to pick this new DVD up.

Shawn Francis
03-04-2012, 12:01 PM
Yeah, the solo DVD of REVENGE is indeed full frame. I heard somewhere that it was mentioned it might be open matte. If anyone has got the full frame version and then get's THIS version, a comparison would be good.

Ian Jane

It's full frame but it is open matte. It doesn't looked cropped to my eyes. I would be very surprised if the version of Revenge on this set is widescreen. MGM's repackaged stuff is usually identical to the single disc versions. But you can't argue with that price and even in open matte I thought Revenge looked fine.

Shawn Francis
03-04-2012, 12:26 PM
Even if this collection turns out to be full frame, I'm still gonna get it. The price is right, and for THREE movies even. All of which I NEED. Wonder If that PRAY FOR DEATH MOD is gonna be the UNCUT version.

Mark Tolch

I saw American Ninja 2 in the theatre, but i think that we rented the first one when it came out. There are caps of the Revenge disc out there, so i'll do some quick caps when i get the disc for anyone who gives a shit, and the question will be answered. I don't mind open-matte ,but I do like it when the pretty picture fills the pretty TV screen.

Shawn Francis

I give a shit. I most definitely give a shit. And, yes, I like it best when the movie fits the entire screen, too.

Here's the back cover. Don't see any mention of the flicks being LBX, but, then again why would that reviewer on Amazon lie about it?

why would that reviewer on Amazon lie about it?
It could be a planted review... Of course I have no clue for this one, but it happen often. It's the reason why I don't trust those review more than those on imdb.

Shawn Francis
03-07-2012, 07:38 PM
The only one I KNOW is LBX is AMERICAN NINJA, since it was LBX in it's solo DVD. Wouldn't make any sense to full frame it in a collection. Just have to wait until Mark gets the DVD and then we'll know for sure. Yes, ideally, I would like it to be LBX, but at this price, for 3 movies I STILL need in my collection, I'll still be getting it.

Mark Tolch

Yeah, i'm still waiting. Fuckin Canada post. It shipped Monday morning, I was expecting it yesterday....maybe tomorrow.

For those packs Death Wish 2-4 were finally made available in Widescreen, so I'd expect the same here.

Okay, I grabbed a few caps from Joe at http://faces-of-fu.blogspot.com/2010/01/review-revenge-of-ninja-1983.html of the stand alone MGM disc, and then tried to get matching ones off of the version on the 3-pack (all one disc, yikes) that just arrived today. SPOILER below, kinda. The top ones are from the standalone....

It's safe to say that the standalone was open matte, and that the one in the 3-pack is just matted to 1.78:1, though there is some extra information on the side.... Wasn't this exciting???

Shawn Francis

I still prefer the LBX version. Gonna be getting it, now that I know, and knowing is half the battle.

Shawn Francis

How did RAGE OF HONOR look?

Mark Tolch
03-13-2012, 06:56 PM
Tis indeed! I haven't had the chance to check out the rest of the films thus far, sir!

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 06:58 PM
As long as we now know about REVENGE. Looks pretty good, though, matted to 1.78:1.

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 07:01 PM
Thanks, Mark, for doing this.

Ian Jane

Three movies on one disc? How are the compression artifacts? The fullframe one shows way better detail but that could be a difference in the jpeg compression.

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 07:06 PM
Oh, shit, now that you mentioned that I went back and looked at the photos again and the Full Frame DOES look clearer. Another dilemma has presented itself to me.

Mark Tolch
03-13-2012, 07:16 PM
I wouldn't put too much stock into the caps, i grabbed them off of VLC, which i always have interlacing problems with. As for the compression, i didn't have a lot of chance to get too into the quality. If it's dual layer, though, no trailers...you're looking at about 4.5 hours of video on a dual layer. that's not bad.

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 07:18 PM
And, thanks to Mark, I'm off that damn fence again. Will be picking this up next month. Ninjas couldn't even stop me.

I know I have seen RAGE, but I can recall next to nothing about it. That Amazon review said there was something wrong with the LBXing on this one.

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 07:21 PM
The middle photo of Kosugi holding his shuriken, a caption just hit me -- "Hey, guys, look, I just found my lucky shuriken! Look how shiny it is!"

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 07:24 PM
The one with the guy dancing with the chick -- "Hmmm, tits. I sense, tits, nearby. Must investigate."

Mark Tolch
03-13-2012, 07:26 PM
In all honesty, the picture is not that terrific looking. The bitrate seems to average between 3 and 4Mbps on these titles....in comparison, the Midnite Movies version of "Comedy of Terrors" is in the high 4 Mbps range - 6. There's definitely some compression there. I mean, for 4 bucks for 3 movies, I'm not complaining.

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 07:30 PM
Now I'm on the fence again. Just tell me, which should I buy? The full frame REVENGE of the LBX REVENGE?

Mark Tolch
03-13-2012, 07:34 PM
Truth be told, I can't remember how REVENGE and AMERICAN NINJA looked on their respective single-disc releases. The screencaps were more posted to confirm the framing and the open-matte question. It wasn't a distraction to me, and I didn't notice anything until i went back and looked really closely. Like i said, for 4 bucks, meh.

Shawn Francis
03-13-2012, 08:17 PM
You're right, if I got these separately, I'd be paying a lot more than 4 bucks. Yeah, I'll still get it.

Honestly I prefer the original disc. I got one of those Chuck Norris 3-fers on one disc at Walmart once... pretty sure it was Delta Force 1/2 and Code of Silence... the artifacting on that got horrible at times.

Mark Tolch
03-14-2012, 07:26 AM
Here's another interesting thing I discovered.....no chapter stops.

Ian Jane
03-14-2012, 08:34 AM
I'll stick with my single discs. The three pack is a deal for sure but I've already got the single discs and don't care enough about the matting to rebuy Revenge. I can just zoom in instead.

Mark Tolch
03-14-2012, 08:41 AM
Rage of Honor would be the selling point for some, I guess.....

Ian Jane
03-14-2012, 10:14 AM
It's also available as a single disc release (cheap too (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000092Q4W/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=cognitrespon-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000092Q4W)).

Mark Tolch
03-14-2012, 10:38 AM
Oh...I didn't know that. Is it 4 dollars cheap?

Ian Jane
03-14-2012, 10:49 AM
Used copies are less than $2.00.

Here's another interesting thing I discovered.....no chapter stops.

Pretty sure the Norris 3-fer I got was like that.... Pisses me off to no end. One advantage to VHS over DVD.... The movie is in the exact same spot you left off at when you come back to it. :)

It works for the DVDs too. At least all the DVD readers I purchased, my Blu-Ray reader and my computer always restore a movie at the point I stop watching it...
