I haven't heard if Animeigo are going to be releasing these domestically or not (note that it's Region B locked so... maybe they are doing it for A?). Can't say I love the cover art, but if Meiko sells, I can understand the want to put her up front and center like that.

Animeigo's Lady Snowblood DVDs went OOP last November, so I assume they lost the rights.

I didn't realize that. This could be the only option for some time then.

That cover art is absolutely hideous! Thank goodness that Arrow had the good sense to offer the original poster artwork as a reversible sleeve. It's the first thing I'm going to do when I get my hands on this one. Btw, Arrow is also releasing this in a Limited Edition SteelBook (http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/index.php?tle_id=641&art_id=5) version too.

With the same lousy cover art apparantly. If the extras are the same, I'll bite on this. Assuming the transfers are good.

From Cult Labs (http://www.cult-labs.com/forums/lady-snowblood/8560-lady-snowblood-lady-snowblood-2-official-announcement-7.html):

"The Snowblood Dual Format Edition is now 3 discs and the SteelBook is now Blu-ray only.

The films will be split one film per Blu-ray and the DVD will have both films on one disc. We decided against putting both films on one Blu-ray as the encode would not have been good enough, in order to get a top notch encode we had to split the films. We will update with full details of the discs soon!"

I've got this on preorder. Really looking forward to rewatching these movies in HD.

yeah, a real shame they stuck with the same abysmal cover art that was originally used by Danish distributor, AWE.

Kudos to Arrow for the decision to split up both films & give each its own Blu-ray disc!

The one sheet is definitely cooler - I do understand why they might want 'more' Mako front and center for marketing purposes though.

Has she popped up anywhere on any DVD ever? I don't think she has. Would be great if she did but I think she's more or less retired from the public eye.

I finally got around to pre-ordering the steelbook version on Amazon UK and it's a bargain at £14.99 which is roughly $24 at today's exchange rates.

Now that's the cover art that should've been the original choice instead of that gaudy "Blizzard from the Netherworld" one.

I'm going to wait for reviews before plunking down on this one but the more adventurous and/or trusting may be interested to know that Arrow have pre-orders up on their website for the regular dual format (http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/index.php?c=y&tle_id=640&v=) release and the steelbook (http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/index.php?tle_id=641) release in which they'll ship direct to you and early at that.

Yeah, blu-ray.com also gave good marks to the video on this one in a review today.

I preordered this from Arrow back when it was first announced (which of course means I overpaid) really looking forward to finally getting some Meiko Kaji in HD...now if only someone would step up and put out the Sasori series on blu

Took a gamble on the steelbook and I'm glad the reviews are unanimous in praising the transfer & PQ of the blu-ray. Amazon dispatched it a few days ago, so should have it soon. First thing I'm going to do is switch out the cover art.

Surprised to see that Arrow have the dual format release (sans steelbook) on sale for £12-99 at their website. I'm somewhat glad I cancelled my preorder with Amazon a couple of weeks ago.

I bite on the steelbook from Diabolik. A bit pricey but I have no confidence that we'll see a US release anytime soon... and the steelbook will look pretty on my shelf. It should show up tomorrow.

Is it just me or is the transfer for Lady Snowblood kinda waxy looking? Not as bad as say the LW&C movies, good detail in the close ups, but there's some noise reduction here I think. More than the movie probably needs.

Paul L

It's not just you, Ian. I thought so too. I could be wrong, and I haven't looked at it under a microscope, but at a guess I'd say there's been some digital scrubbing here and there.

Ian Jane

Yeah it's not crazy like it has been on other releases but it is there, right?

Still happy to have the set though.

Lady Snowblood and other Asian Cult Classics are now available on 'super legit, honest' DVDs at Rite Aid!

Seriously though, Rite Aid has a lot of bootlegs for some reason.

This may be Lady Snowblood related. Marc Walkow is in Japan shooting interviews for an upcoming Blu-ray and he posted the following pics on twitter:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CPMMRoVUsAY0YDc.jpg
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CPMMT7TU8AARpGD.jpg

It kind of looks like Kazuo Koike in the first picture, but I'm not 100% sure. And I think it is Norio Osada in the second picture. So, if it is Kazuo Koike, this is likely for Criterion's Lady Snowblood release.

Takuma

Yeah, those seem like Koike and Osada.

Criterion has the rights for Lady Snowblood?

Derrick King
09-20-2015, 12:59 AM
Yes, they've been selling/renting both Lady Snowblood films as digital downloads on iTunes and Amazon for a few months now. I figure they licensed them (and maybe the Lone Wolf and Cub films, if they have them as well) when they picked up the Toho Zatoichis

I have the Arrow steelbook but since those transfers are old Arrow and pretty damn waxy, I don't mind double dipping on these.

Hopefully the Lone Wolf & Cub films will follow.

Typically I only bought the Arrow release a short while ago. Cant double dip on everything, even if its completely enticing having these Criterion style in 2k.

Hopefully the Lone Wolf & Cub films will follow.

I hope so. I've done my part by pre-ordering this from Criterion's site (last time I did that was the Zatoichi box set.) Since he was in Japan for a week, I assume that Marc Walkow did more interviews (either for Criterion or Arrow) than the two here, so we should have some more Japanese goodness later in 2016.

Saw LADY SNOWBLOOD the other day projected from a 35mm print and it looked nothing like the screenshots from the Criterion Bluray. I'm not an expert regarding color grading and contrast levels and all that stuff, but it definitely did look more like the Arrow Bluray which I have here. I'll have to admit though that I can't compare it to the Criterion in motion since I don't have it and also that the print they screened it from wasn't perfect either. It seemed to me that it suffered from similar problems as the Arrow Bluray does but not to such an extreme extent.

That said it still was a pleasure to experience LADY SNOWBLOOD in a near full cinema from 35mm. This is a movie which works much better on the silver screen than at home in my opinion. No wonder Tarantino got inspired by it for his KILL BILL movies.

Thanks for the comments and info. That's pretty much how I felt about the BD's after seeing a 35mm print in Tokyo last year.

I also enjoyed Lady Snowblood more on 35mm. That happens to me often. 35mm doesn't make bad films good, but it does tend to make great films even a tiny bit greater... add that additional '+' (or 0.25) to the experience. I will probably never forget seeing Goyokin on Shin bungeiza's big screen or Evil Dead Trap in the atmospheric Laputa Asagaya...
