From Punk News (http://www.punknews.org/article/47272):

-----------------

Glenn Danzig (http://www.rockshockpop.com/bands/glenndanzig) has posted a stream of his cover of "Devil's Angels, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLA1-s0RMc8)" a song originally by Davie Allan & The Arrows and featured in the eponymous 60s-era biker film starring John Cassavetes. The song is part of an upcoming collection of covers to be performed by the The Misfits (http://www.rockshockpop.com/bands/themisfits), Samhain (http://www.rockshockpop.com/bands/samhain) and Danzig (http://www.rockshockpop.com/bands/danzig) vocalist. He explained the cover:

"I've wanted to record this song since 1979 and this is exactly the same arrangement I had for it back then, so it pretty much sounds like that late '70s style of mine. I'm really happy with the way it turned out; it actually came out much better than I had hoped it would. We're going to be playing it live on these upcoming shows."

I kinda like it. Rad that the movie (http://www.rockshockpop.com/forums/content.php?2070-Devil’s-Angels) the song is from came out from MGM a few months ago.

My bet is that this Danzig cover album will suck less than The Misfits' Devil's Rain.

Sounds like Danzig singing over Graves era Misfits.

Ian Jane

Kind of, yeah. I liked American Psycho and about half of Famous Monsters though, so I'm ok with that.

Me too. I'm actually looking forward to hearing the rest of his cover album now.

I hope he covers some Elvis. You know he wants to.

Ian Jane

It's already been confirmed that he's going to. No word on what track yet, but I'm Evil would be a good choice.

Glenn's covered Elvis before, Blue Christmas and Trouble.

That tune is actually pretty fun. Cover albums are usually pretty deadly, but this could be okay.

Misfits - Blue Christmas

Unfortunately, most of the download links for this show were hosted on Megaupload. Still, this is pretty easy show to get a hold of.

OK, I figured it was some Danzig B-side obscurity or something.

So the covers album is still happening and now he's doing a 25th Anniversary Tour with Doyle.

I know what it's gonna be titled - "Under The Covers" and the art will be a Simon Bisley painting of Danzig in bed with his comforter pulled up just over his nose.

There's an interiew with Danzig at Blabbermouth posted today that talks about the cover album and a TV special he's doing.

http://www.blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=189312

"Glenn: The "Legacy" TV special was an idea that was brought to me and it was an idea that Mark Brooks had; he does "Metalocalypse". It was basically to do like a DANZIG "Legacy" TV show loosely based on the Elvis [Presley] '68 Comeback special; it revisited a lot of his past and a lot of stuff. So we did that with the "Legacy" TV show, which is almost done now. It was performance pieces that I do, then there's the band playing live, we do [songs from] DANZIG, SAMHAIN. Then for the MISFITS thing, we did what Elvis did when he sat down with Scotty Moore and the Memphis Mafia and we just did them all right there live , sitting and everyone's around us; there's no backstage, we're just on a little podium in from of everybody. And so we did a bunch of MISFITS songs and Steve [Zing] was just playing on a cylinder or something; it was pretty cool. We were doing the "Legacy" shows anyway around that same time period so we just thought we'd put it on film while everybody was there."

No backstage? So, is he gonna get beaten up onstage, then?

No idea if this is true, but back in the late 80s/early 90s heard lots of rumors about Danzig getting beat up by the one armed drummer from Def Leppard.

Danzig has recorded a new song with Doyle. (http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3260740/danzig-has-recorded-a-new-song-with-doyle/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=danzig-has-recorded-a-new-song-with-doyle)

"ex-Misfits singer Danzig has stated that he has recorded a new song with Doyle, who is also an ex-Misfits member. Danzig stated that the song was recorded in April and is, “…bizarre. I don’t know. I really couldn’t… It’s weird.”"

Jerry's legal team responds!

“In 1995, Misfits founding member Jerry Only secured the exclusive legal right to tour and record as the Misfits, and, in accordance with those legal rights, launched a licensing program through Cyclopian Music. At the same time, Glenn Anzalone—professionally known as Glenn Danzig (former co-founder and Misfits vocalist circa 1977 to 1983) —made clear that he wanted no public association with the Misfits or Cyclopian Music’s business endeavors.

Despite full knowledge of Cyclopian Music’s use of the Misfits’ name and logos for decades, Glenn Danzig curiously filed a lawsuit on April 3rd, 2014 seeking a portion of the proceeds from Cyclopian Music’s activities with which he has had no involvement whatsoever. Danzig’s lawsuit can only be described as a sour grapes tantrum based on outrageous allegations, the majority of which are completely false, while others are ill conceived and grossly misguided—and will be proven false in court. Reports of Glenn Danzig’s lawsuit and the falsehoods within it, however, have resulted in the dissemination of misinformation regarding the nature of Glenn Danzig’s baseless claims and Cyclopian Music’s rights.

For example, Jerry Only and Cyclopian are under no obligation, legal, contractual or otherwise, to obtain consent, or approvals of any kind, from former member Glenn Danzig in connection with their use of the Misfits name or logos. Apparently Danzig’s own product line doesn’t sell as well as he might like, but the fact of the matter remains that Jerry Only and Cyclopian Music’s Misfits licenses, business activity and merchandising endeavors are 100% lawful and consistent with their legal rights.

To be clear, Glenn Danzig has no legal right to, and no interest in, Cyclopian’s Misfits licenses or business ventures period. Danzig’s lawsuit is nothing more than a calculated attempt to unfairly and improperly enrich himself from revenue streams to which he is not entitled.”

Can you elaborate Ian?

Is the DANZIG LEGACY SPECIAL already filmed or is he going to pick and choose moments from the above tour?

I'm a huge Danzig fan with MISFITS and THE RAMONES being my favorite bands.
I saw his last tour a few years ago (with Doyle) but this time he's touring with PENNYWISE (who I'm not into) so I assume I'd be spending $50.00 for a half hour set.

Ian Jane

It's done! If you click the link above you can watch it on demand for $9.99.

I haven't watched it yet so I don't have much more to offer. I saw him a few years back with Doyle too, it was a good show.

I loved it.
It was great to see Doyle bashing his guitar.
One thing that pissed me off was I knew they had one more encore in them but the concert was delayed for hours so the audience was too tired. (around 2:00 AM)
I looked up the set list from the previous show and yes...they did another song...my favorite LONDON DUNGEON! :(

So I watched this on the weekend and was thrilled and disappointed.

Unfortunately the Elvis in the round thing had only 7 or 8 MISFITS songs with Doyle & Co.
The rest was 4 or 5 songs from a Danzig concert and 2 goofy videos.
The videos were silly because of his over-the-top growling which looked ridiculous for his age.
I laughed all the way through the opening video of Mother despite the cool visuals.

I hope this will come out on a BD/CD package.
Extra footage would be nice too.

Tempting to go see this in Edmonton, because Danzig, while a huge asshole, is also a legend in his own right. I've also been to a ton of shows at that venue and it's easy to get to, but I just don't know if it's worth it. I'm on the fence. Anyone? Bueller, Bueller?

I'm on the fence too since the tickets are $50.00 and I don't like the other bands.
I'm trying to find his set-list for this tour as I believe he won't be doing many MISFIT songs this time.
But on the other hand he IS touring with a Punk band.

Yeah, it's a tough call, but I'm leaning towards not going. To me, at the moment, there doesn't seem to be enough value for me to go. I mean, for what I'm paying I don't know if I'm going to appreciate the material he's presenting. Anyone end any reviews of any recent shows? I'm curious. I know it won't be the same show, obviously, but I'm wondering about things like Danzig's voice, set list, etc.

I haven't found the set-list for this tour yet.
But I was surprised how good his voice still is with the Streaming Special.
However, he only did about 7 songs and was about to lose his voice with the last one (THIRTEEN)
What I don't know is how many takes were done or if other songs were cut

Over the past few weeks I’ve been having a little Danzig retrospective and its been really rewarding. The first three albums are still masterpieces with How the Gods Kill still being the pinnacle of the original line-up to me but I’ve also become shamefully aware of how I’ve neglected 4p somewhat over the years. Stuff like “Cantspeak” “Going Down to Die”, “Until You Call on the Dark” and “I Don’t Mind the Pain” are some of the original bands finest compositions.

Going though all the albums also reinforced a theory that I’ve had for a while which is maybe Danzig should have tried making an album like Satan’s Child before tackling an experiment like Blackacidevil. Granted, the sonic jump following 4p would have still been pretty big, even though you could probably call 4p “experimental” in its own right, but the industrial sound on Satan’s Child feels much more focused. I actually think Blackacidevil has its fair share of good ideas and nifty sounds, but he still dove into the 90’s industrial craze head first when he probably should have taken baby steps. Plus Satan’s Child is heavy as all fuck.

Also, am I alone in thinking Circle of Snakes is one of Danzig’s strongest? Always loved that album. I really liked I Luciferi too, but I get why some people felt Circle of Snakes was a “comeback” album of sorts, what with I Luciferi technically still being part of the “industrial” Danzig era.

I also think his first four are essential with HTGK being my favorite too.
I've also come to appreciate most of his other stuff including the two disc outtakes.
I love his version of Cat People (Putting Out fire)

However, I have no interest in his Aria's.

GLENN DANZIG Completes Work On 'Danzig Sings Elvis', Resumes Recording Next DANZIG Album (http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/glenn-danzig-completes-work-on-danzig-sings-elvis-resumes-recording-next-danzig-album/)

Thanks, Tom

This has me a bit concerned..."I'm stripping some of the stuff down to the bare bones, very old-school fifties echoey slap-back vocals."

I find some of his music "too stripped"
The added keyboards play a large part in the brilliance of How The Gods Kill for me.

Well it makes perfect sense aesthetically, retaining the spirit of the original recordings. He was on Elvis radio earlier in the year and talked about how he loved the rawness of the super early Elvis recordings.

I assume your referring to the production of the first two albums? Certainty the thicker production on How the Gods Kill is exactly what that set of songs was calling for. Same goes for the added textural bells and whistles on 4p but the meat and potato's blues based sound was perfect for the S/T and Lucifuge.

Yeah, I was referring to the first two releases.
Don't get me wrong...I love them and wouldn't want them changed.
But we are now more accustomed to a more layering of sound.
I get the impression he's sometimes more concerned about playing songs live, with the fewest band members, over the Art of recording.

However, you're right...this project might benefit.

Speaking of the Art of recording...I wish THE RAMONES first album was recorded differently.
We all know Punks had a hard time getting producers accept a noisier sound todays Punk bands take for granted.
But If they're not going to layer sounds at least double the guitar left and right like they did with LEAVE HOME.

So I'm excited to hear the upcoming mono mix of the first RAMONES.
I just hope they don't go to the extreme of board distortion like Iggy did with the remaster of RAW POWER

You might be onto something there. Then again, some of the later albums are pretty thick sounding, Satan's Child and Circle of Snakes especially. I do wonder if he was thinking of the live show with Blackacidevil though.

Yes, only the first few sound a little dated since I can only hear one guitar and bass.
Again, sounding "dated" is not a bad thing.

To be clearer... my fear was that quote might lead to what we got with a lot of songs from SKELETONS.
I don't know if they're actual demos but they sound like demos.
They're like drawings that still need to be filled in.

I just had a thought...Is that why it was called SKELETONS?
I thought it just had to do with the music that inspired him that he pulled out of his chest (closet)

"These are my skeletons," he affirms. "You may or may not know that I dig these songs. You could say that some of this music is the actual basis and skeleton of what I listened to growing up — ultimately informing the kind of music I like. It's the foundation. If you took Elvis and SABBATH out of my life, I probably wouldn't be the Glenn Danzig you know! I'm glad both sides are represented on this record."
Coincidentally I happened upon that quote from this bit of Skeletons related news, DANZIG Releases 'Skeletons' Limited-Edition Picture Disc (http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/danzig-releases-skeletons-limited-edition-picture-disc/)

Pretty much all of life's essentials are covered, horror, music, comics, wrestling. This was done before the Misfits reunion announcement and he's got a clever way of dancing around that issue during the interview.

DANZIG To Release New Album In May; 2017's 'Blackest Of The Black' Festival Announced
(http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/danzig-to-release-new-album-in-may-2017s-blackest-of-the-black-festival-announced/)

The new DANZIG album will be released in mid-May. This will be the first collection of all-new DANZIG material in seven years, following 2010's critically acclaimed "Deth Red Sabaoth". The title for the new disc will be announced shortly.

This June also marks the 25th anniversary of "Danzig III: How The Gods Kill". "How The Gods Kill" was the first DANZIG album to crack Billboard's Top 30 and the first DANZIG album produced by the band's frontman and namesake Glenn Danzig himself. In honor of this momentous occasion, DANZIG will play a select handful of shows this summer and will perform many songs from "How The Gods Kill".

In other news, DANZIG and MINISTRY will play at this year's edition of the "Blackest Of The Black" festival, set to take place May 26-27 at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado, California. The two-day event will feature over twenty bands and over twenty "evil attractions." Look for the full details to be announced on March 27.

Blackest of the Black fest sounds hilarious!

http://blackestfest.com/

"Castle Danzig is a fully interactive festival experience in torture, pain, and metal.

Based on the music and graphic novels from Glenn Danzig, fans will get to fully experience being placed in stocks, torture on the rack, and some light electrocution. Just past the tree graveyard, Torture Countess Drukija will guide attendees though their first virgin sacrifice before relaxing into a nice warm blood bath. The worlds foremost suspension artist will be hanging only the most daring fans from hooks, and suspending them up to 20ft in the air. And if the fans are feeling crazy, like really crazy, they will have the opportunity to wriggle into a straight jacket and chill out in the padded cell, where their friends can watch them freak out on video. Castle Danzig is the perfect place to get a little blood on your clothes, and get that selfie only a sicko would like."

So, the new album. Seems to be getting a mixed to hostile reaction going by some of the stuff I've seen so far. Personally, I think its pretty solid once you get past the weird production. The mix actually doesn't sound all that different from I Luciferi which took a similar, more "raw" approach to the production. It almost sounds like it wasn't mastered. I heard that it was recorded over various periods of time which would account for GD's vocals sounding more weathered in certain songs, whereas in other songs like "But a Nightmare" he sounds incredible. I love how explicitly doomy the album is and there certainly is a sinister vibe to the whole thing.

Yeah I thought it was pretty decent. I've only listened to it twice so far but it's got some solid songs on it. I agree that the production is a bit rough but I'm ok with that.

I thought it was pretty dull at first listen, but it has grown on me. It could have benefited from the addition of a couple of more uptempo songs/arrangements, or stripped back arrangements on a few tracks. I’d rate it below DRS but it’s much better than Skeletons. It would also benefit from better production and mastering. I don’t mind raw production but much of the record sounds like butt.

For some reason I find it works better on some songs than others. Like on "Eyes Ripping Fire" is sticks out like a sore thumb, the drums especially, but on others like "Last Ride" and "Pull the Sun" is seems oddly appropriate.
