View Full Version : Rob Zombie's Lords Of Salem

So Jack posted this on FB but it started at FearNet (http://www.fearnet.com/news/b26336_sneak_peek_rob_zombies_lords_of_salem.html) ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=y6_XMwTwVms

So yeah, Rob Zombie played a show and at that show debuted a teaser for his new movie and someone recorded it in lousy quality on a camera phone and uploaded it BUT I think this is the first time any footage has popped up for this.

It's kind of hard to get a real feel for this given that it goes out of focus, is quite shaky and features a big drum kit in front of it. Parts of it look visually kind of cool, even more parts of it look like a shitty black metal video from 2003. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

FearNet's plot synopsis...

"Heidi, a blonde rock chick, DJs at a local radio station and, together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster), forms part of the "Big H Radio Team". A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, "a gift from the Lords". She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords' record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma. Later Whitey plays the Lords' record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with listeners. The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H Team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon Heidi and her cohorts find that the gig is far from the rock spectacle they're expecting: The original Lords of Salem are returning, and they're out for BLOOD."

I'd hoped, before reading that and based only on the title of the movie, that this might be about the Salem witch trials, because someone could and should make a really cool movie based on those events, but evidently this is not - it's probably just gonna Sheri Moon Zombie screaming a lot and Sid Haig laughing all evil like. Udo Kier, Clint Howard, Patricia Quinn, Dee Wallace, Michael Berryman, Billy Drago, Meg Foster, Ken Foree, Richard Lynch, Barbara Crampton, Diamond Dallas Page (?), Camille Keaton and Brandon Cruz of all people have been cast according to the imdb link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1731697/fullcredits#cast).

RZ? Yawn...

The fact that this film has been completed for a while and hasn't been released sort of makes me think this is really one giant steaming turd.

Almost sounds like a big budget version of Death Metal Zombies. Hopefully this has a lead with a speech impediment, too. Though, I'd settle for colorful and Sheri looking hot (like House of a Thousand Corpses).

Paul Casey

Or maybe closer to Black Roses.

Or maybe closer to Black Roses.

Such an underrated 90 minutes of radness. If Zombie was inspired by that, and I doubt he was, so much the better.

The rock/horror subgenre is so great. Whether the band's in peril or the band is the peril, I could watch all day. I even like crummy movies like Neon Maniacs.
Totally dl'd the Rocktober Blood soundtrack the other day. RAINBOW EYES!!!!!

I love Black Roses, I hate Rob Zombie's movies.... I don't think he'll do anything on par with Black Roses.

He won't.

And Paul, yeah, it's a super rad genre. They really don't make them like they used to.

Stills don't impress me anymore. It seems like the new generation of horror filmmakers are content at copying the cinematography employed by the Eyetalians.

Well, they did get it right for the most part.

Those screens are promising, Zombie is a good director but I think he needs someone to help him with the scripts, that's where he's weakest.

I sat through Zombies previous "movies" and can honestly say that he should NEVER write a screenplay again in his life.....

DEVILS REJECTS would have been a GREAT movie if he had let someone competent write his dialogue and clean up his scripts...

As for the HALLOWEEN stuff....similar story......

as for his talent behind the camera....I think that he has potential...but he has to STOP writing his movies...STOP the crappy actor cameos and STOP putting his wife as one of the main characters...

I'm in the minority that I really enjoyed DEVIL'S REJECTS, but I think it was largely because I love watching Bill Moseley act. Sid Haig and Ken Foree were entertaining as well. I can't bloody well stand Sheri Moon Zombie, though, and William Forsythe was ridiculous.

That being said, I disliked HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES, and was actually angered watching his (piss)take on HALLOWEEN.

sukebanboy
06-13-2012, 12:04 PM
Yeah...Bill Moseley is always a JOY to watch...and there was SOMETHING good beneath the surface of DEVILS REJECTS waiting to be released by a decent scriptwriter.....

Maybe Zombie's heart is in the right place and he REALLY wants to make decent exploitation movies for the fans....but he definitely doesnt have the screenwriting skills needed...

Once you get past all the FUCKING ANNOYING pop ups, Bloody Disgusting has posted some on set footage that looks like it was shot on a camera phone here (http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3149033/on-set-video-from-the-lords-of-salem-gives-hint-about-maria-conchita-alonsos-character/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter).

House Of A 1,000 Corpses always felt like a 5th rate TCM knock-off to me. Also, casting Mosley just felt like a cheap gimmick, like he was saying I not only made this shitty TCM rip-off, but I got a TCM 2 star to be in it as well.

So evidently Rob Zombie is going to follow this movie up with a hockey film called Broad Street Bullies (http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/21733/rob-zombie-set-for-broad-street-bullies).

I didn't see that one coming.

I didn't see that one coming.

Zombie has the following to say about the film: "Each character involved is more outrageous than the next. The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this stranger-than-fiction sports tale."

Great, so he's gonna Forrest Gump it up with 1974 classic rock. "Dudes, Broad Street Bullies has THE BEST soundtrack! WOOOOOOO!"
Fuck that shit.

Rob Zombie has a very sterile, commercial style. He seems to focus so much on horror mythology and "being really, really serious" in tone, that for me, his movies ultimately become over-long music videos. He basically seems like the Christopher Nolan of "modern grindhouse", if you'll buy into such a stupid category.

gotta say you have his directorial style pretty much nailed there...he always seems like he is trying to hard to be "authentic"

I am curious about this, mainly because I actually like the plot synopsis, but what I'm surprised about is that Zombie doesn't know that the "witches" in Salem weren't burned at the stake, they were hung.

The trailer for this looks very promising, at least in terms of psychedelic excess that we haven't seen since the heyday of the 70s.

Never really had much interest in this...watched the trailer and it did not pique my interest any more...it is just kind of there for me I guess...

Looking it up on IMDB, I noticed there are a lot of cult actors in it which their scenes were deleted...guess there will be the massive special edition release at some point...

She gives Mila Jovovich in those Resident Evil movies a run for her money

I think Milla's more fun to look at though, and in those movies, her style sort of suits the character. SMZ.... I dunno. The verdict's out until I see the movie. I won't damn her performance just based on the trailer. Gotta give Zombie credit for coming up with some cool visuals though.

Alex K.

In terms of acting style they're on par with each other.

As far as Rob's visuals, they look good, sure. But take any film student whose obsessed with Kubrick and give him a budget and I think you'd see similar results.

Whenever you get into a discussion with those Zombie fanboys (something I avoid) the exasperation level is extreme. They just say things like "Dude, DEVILS REJECTS has the record for the most FUCKs in a movie!".....like that is a indicator of something good? Zombie is a capable director (when he's not doing the fucking cliched "shake camera" trick) and has some good ideas, but his writing skills are mediocre on his best day (a problem shared by Eli Roth). He would do much better to work with a co-writer who can mitigate his most notable flaws---like . his nearly non-existent grasp of effective dialogue.

I might drive two hours to see this in a theater. I'm reading the novelization which is about what I expected given the source.

I love Rejects and am probably more fond of HoTC than anyone not named Zombie. I enjoyed Halloween (mainly the first half hour), but I've never seen the original.

I didn't mind Ho1KC...I liked DEVILS REJECTS. I didn't like his HALLOWEEN films.

This movie is a piece of fucking garbage. Rob Zombie has finally done what everyone has been accusing him of...made a feature length MTV music video. SMZ is so bad in this, it's not even something you can laugh at. This movie has no flow, it looks like RZ had a bunch of little scenes he thought would look cool and wrote a really, REALLY shitty script to tie them together.

I'm actually surprised at how bad this is. Even his HALLOWEEN films had one or two things where I could say "Well, he might've had a good idea with this". LORDS OF SALEM...the film is as moronic as the title suggests.

Probably his best looking film.
I do wish they had gone in a more extreme direction with the story.

I really liked this, probably enough so that I would shell out (a normal price, not $35, obviously) for a good Blu Ray, especially to see the deleted material with Udo Kier and such. I agree that it looked really sharp, and felt to me like it owed quite a bit to Suspiria, with some pretty burly blasphemy for his comparatively high profile. Wrote a review a while back here...

http://www.examiner.com/review/the-lords-of-salem-is-a-stylish-slow-burn-horror-gem-from-rob-zombie

And agreed, Meg Foster definitely stole the show.

Mark Tolch

I'm surprised that so many people liked it. one man's trash, I suppose. I thought that it looked good, but only because it seemed like he lifted the aesthetic of some of Kubrick's films and dumped them in...they more artistic sequences, to me, felt totally out of place.

Anyway, Rob seems to be back to music for the time being, which I'm definitely appreciating more than his film output.

I'll probably have to end up getting this, there were no screenings or anything over here (at least not that I was aware of), so I never got the chance to see it and I really like Zombie's stuff.
