Distribpix has just announced that they're going to try to bring Radley Metzger's classic adult film The Opening Of Misty Beethoven to Blu-ray if they can raise enough money to make it happen. As such, they're started a fundraising campaign that you can view here: http://projectmisty.com/

In a nutshell, the DVD is going to happen no matter what. The Blu-ray is going to cost a bit more and so that's where this campaign comes in. By pledging, you're not charged until and unless the target is hit - so if this doesn't happen, you're not out anything. If it does happen, you'll get some pretty great 'rewards' based on how much you pledge to the project.

Anyone interested in this should pledge at least $35, that way you're getting yourself a copy of the Blu-ray (which will be dual layered and include ALL of the extras from the DVD in HD), shipped. It's basically the same concept as preordering yourself a copy of the Blu-ray - with your hard earned $'s pledged, Distribpix can move forward with the replication and licensing costs involved in bringing this to the format.

There are a lot more rewards available to those who want to pledge more, however, including soundtrack CDs (with 48 pages of liners), posters, prints, credits on the disc, access to theatrical screenings, exclusive discs of outtake footage and a lot more. Again, all of that can be seen here (http://projectmisty.com/).

This is up to almost a grand alread, less than an hour after going live.

Anyone who hasn't, check out the video on the kickstarter page.

How come it costs so much more to make a blu ray? I actually find it easier to master a blu ray than a DVD. Is it just Sony charging a shit load for rights to stick the bluray logo on the cover? If so they should be stuck in a cage and poked with pointed sticks.

Ian Jane

Licensing fees are a big part of it, replication fees too.

Jimmy Simard

As Ian said, Sony ask for a lot of money in advance for a certain number of units whatever they are sold or not and if they are pressed or not. You can see that as a modern form of mafia protection...

It's the big reason why most of the small labels don't take the Blu-Ray road, what would be the point of giving a large part of their small profit (when they do one) to Sony?

Ryan K

Just finished backing this. It's now 26% funded on opening day. Let's make it happen.
Wish I could afford to back Misty Beethoven and the HGL blu-rays.

Dom D

It's bullshit that sony have been able to take this position. The independent labels should band together to offer a HD download service. I know I'd far prefer a HD .avi I could download over a physical disc I have to wait for in the mail. No royalties then except to those who have earnt them.

Jimmy Simard

You realize that some of us even if they have an high speed connection are on plan with limitation (mine being 5 Go). So it means that I would be able to buy anything with an HD download service and no more physical disc...

If the other other HD format would have been the successfull one the actual license fee practice wouldn't be a problem.

Ian Jane

Yup, which is why I was an HD-DVD supporter until they lost the format war. Regardless, Blu-ray is a great format and I'm keeping my fingers crossed this'll happen. I'd love to see the movie properly restored in HD and for those of us who want a physical disc, this is the only way that's going to happen.

While I understand the ease, appeal and simplicity of a download, Distribpix does such a great job with the packaging and presentation and physical extras on their top shelf releases and you wouldn't get that with a download.

Dom D

That sucks but then some of us don't have a Blu-Ray player which sucks as well for stuff like the Grindhouse release. Even if I was feeling wealthy enough to do get one I'm not sure I want to encourage the bastards. Personally I don't care a lot about resolution and whatnot but if I was the sort who did I'd want an uncompressed .avi routed straight from my harddrive to my computer.

Jimmy Simard
06-01-2012, 07:46 PM
I have one and to be honest I almost never use it, in two years I've bought only 6 Blu-Rays wich is nothing if we consider I own more than 2000 DVDs. Just got it because I needed a backup player and it was cheap and region free.

Ian Jane
06-01-2012, 08:04 PM
I use mine constantly. I only buy DVD now if Blu-ray is not an option. And I don't mind paying a premium for it.

Jimmy Simard
06-01-2012, 08:17 PM
I don't have an HD TV set so it's the reason why it doesn't make a difference to me...

On the subject the campaign is sure going well, almost half the ammount already

I was expecting to do mine today, but my pay is late. I was supposed to go pick the check yesterday, but I never got the letter in my mailbox. I have to wait for an ok to pick it and I guess I will have the call monday, no big deal if it wasn't for the fact I don't have any money to smoke untill than and I'm an heavy smocker... 3 days isn't the end of the world I guess :dunno:

Ian Jane

You should quit, Jimmy!

Jimmy Simard
06-01-2012, 08:50 PM
I've tried almost 10 years ago, but after a month I was so irritable that my co-workers bought me a pack because they wanted to see me again as the nice guy I was :funny:

Ian Jane
06-01-2012, 09:12 PM
BUT.... you'd have a lot more money left over for smutty DVDs, which might make you happier than smokes!

Jimmy Simard
06-01-2012, 10:15 PM
It's my only vice... I don't drink (except for Christmas) and do drug anymore. Surprisingly it was very easy to stop (or control ) the other two, cigarette is a lot harder, it was so different when I started to smoke considering a pack was 2,25$ and now it's almost 10$...

Mark Tolch
06-01-2012, 10:32 PM
I've quit drugs and cigarettes, and i only drink occasionally now...and let me tell ya, Jimmy, you notice the money from smokes more! I know it's hard to be in Quebec and not smoke, but do it! You'll love it. :-D

I don't see why it would be. I'm not sure how they've gone about licensing these titles but I'm pretty sure their previous releases have been region-free.

I'm going to get on and pledge over the weekend, btw.

Just read it... "hollier than thou" company always pissed me off :nono:

Anyway I've already sent an email to Steven with the ammount my pledge was as I sure had not a single problem to trust Steven as we communicate with one another for some years and he was always honest with me.

Hope all the other pledgers (is it the good word?) will do the same. That would suck to see the project die because of the "Won't somebody please think of the children!?!" mentallity.

Ryan K
06-04-2012, 07:12 PM
It is stupid. Especially since I've seen a porno comic named Smut Peddler get successfully funded on Kickstarter to the tune of $80,000. Oh, excuse me, it's not porn it's a "sex-positive, female-friendly erotic comic"

Also sent Steven an email.

Barry M
06-04-2012, 07:43 PM
The email didn't say anything about holier-than-thou attitude from KS, he just said that they found it "too sexy". Probably they got a complaint, and this is how they deal with it: it's their company.

I emailed & said I'd be in again once they figure out what they're doing. There's always another way.

Todd Jordan
06-04-2012, 08:34 PM
Is there any legal action Steve can take? Probably not, eh?

Jimmy Simard
06-04-2012, 08:48 PM
I've sent a polite message to Kickstarter explaining the film value too for what it worth. It costs nothing to try to defend the project as it isn't closed yet maybe there are a chance they will change their decision.

Barry M
06-04-2012, 08:51 PM
I know it's the way I see it...

I figured, or you wouldn't have said it :D

I just mean, Steven's email didn't seem pissed at Kickstarter personally. It didn't sound like they got church-lady on him.

Jimmy Simard
06-04-2012, 09:07 PM
I'm the overreacting king sometimes

But don't worry my message to Kickstarter was extremely polite. No "censure calling" just an explaination of why this film is historically important.

Barry M
06-04-2012, 09:14 PM
I told 'em they were nuts. I said, "what're you, nuts?"

Hi --

I'm new to Kickstarter, but I like the idea a great deal.

I was disappointed, though, to learn that the project to release The Opening of Misty Beethoven on blu-ray would be shut down. Could you please reconsider this decision? It's a worthwhile project, preserving, digitizing and restoring a significant film by an important filmmaker, with Radley Metzger's involvement. Without kickstarter backing, the release of this film in high definition may not be possible: it's a great opportunity, with a great deal of work already under way for the standard defintion DVD, and it will be unfortunate if we lose the chance to preserve this.

Thank you for taking the time to reconsider this decision.

Nuts.

I sent them a polite email as well, indicating that this was more than just an 'adult film' and emphasizing that it had artistic merit and that it was historically important and significant. If enough of us do it, it might make a difference.

Ian Jane
06-05-2012, 10:44 AM
So Kickstarter has upheld their ruling and the page will be taken down later today. More details to follow but Distribpix is going to go through with this even if they have to host the campaign on their own site. So this'll still happen, but not through Kickstarter.

Which is ironic, given that they're part of Amazon and that Amazon sells all manner or hardcore porn on their site even if they pretend not to. Pretty hypocritical if you ask me. But whatever. As long as this goes through...

Jimmy Simard
06-05-2012, 12:17 PM
Too bad for them if they don't want their share... in my case I'll support Steven whatever ways he'll choose to continue.

Wonder if Amazon will re-give me the 1$ they charged me to register my pledge? I ain't really interested to give them money for nothing...

P.S : Concerning Kickstarter, this is not really professional to not reply to an email...

Jimmy Simard
06-05-2012, 08:41 PM

Yeah I pledged up to the next tier just now. I'm sure Ian will post something official in the morning with a link and details. I'm so glad Distribpix is going to continue to run the fundraiser and I hope everyone follows him over with their support. I'm sure they will.

Steven's comments on FB about the disc being region free:

But that doesn't mean that if you haven't pledged yet that you shouldn't. You'll still be getting the DVD and Blu at reduced prices with FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPING, as well as the other great prizes being offered. Some are exclusive to this fundraiser!

John Lyons

So, it looks like we're officially made our goal!
Invoices will soon be emailed to all backers so be on the lookout!

The campaign is still running for another couple weeks so there's still plenty of time to contribute and take advantage of the reduced price DVD and Blu (with FREE domestic shipping!). Remember, some of the rewards are exclusive to this pledge so if you want to own a limited edition piece of MISTY BEETHOVEN history, here's your chance.

Remember, after the campaign, the 2-DVD set will be $29.99 but you can pre-order it (and get free shipping) for $25.00
The Blu-Ray is slated to be $39.99 after the campaign, but for $35 you can get both the 2-DVD set and the Blu with free shipping!

Certainly during the initial campaign there was no option to buy the blu ray on its own, or I would have taken it. For me the blu ray renders the dvd obsolete, so I'm not a fan of these dual format releases.

Todd Jordan
08-04-2012, 09:07 AM
I'm under the impression that when it's up for sale, it will be two separate pieces so you can buy one or the other. I could be wrong though, as I often am.

Richard--W

Barry M
08-04-2012, 11:34 AM
The DVD's an option as a pledge reward: $25US, including shipping.

http://projectmisty.com/rewards/dvd/

Might even still be accepting pledges?

The DVD + Blu is only ten bucks more, though, so probably most people figure it's a good deal. Fuutre blu.

There's also some info about timeframes in that last update -- the blu-ray production is what's holding things up some, but it sounds like maybe an August or September release. With early shipping for supporters.

TIMEFRAMES-So, with all of that said, if this was just going to come out as a 2 disc standard DVD release, it would be ready by the end of July, but since we have decided to go Blu- we must wait until everything is done and will release all at the same time. It is only fair, and much of this we are feeling out, as this is the first time we have done anything like this. But we are going for ASAP, and it is coming to an end, production is near. Also, all project misty backers, will have their rewards shipped before the film is released. We can’t control the US Postal Service, but we will get them out, before the film is released to the public.

I heard from Steven Morowitz tonight on the subject of the Misty release, so I thought I'd pass along the relevant info about release dates.

He said there's nothing definite about dates yet -- doesn't sound like they're going to try to schedule a general release until after they've managed to get the pledge reward packages out. Looks like earlier estimates may have been optimistic though:

"Odds are that everything will be ready, by the end of the month, but probably not the blu, as it has turned into a big thing, so we may end up shipping that separately, but it is too early to know."

So looks like we're gonna need to be patient for a little bit longer... (but I have no doubt our patience will be well rewarded)

That last post (from the 20th update) on the blog (http://distribpixblog.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/the-opening-of-misty-beethoven-2-dvd-set-dual-layer-blu-ray-and-cd-soundtrack/) ends with a comment about distribution:

If we were able to get some solid and fair distribution channel, we would be able to produce more packages like this, we really enjoy it. But without a firm distribution channel, it is too difficult to balance the profit/loss for a project of this scale.

Solid and fair distribution really does sound key, not just for this, but for all the fringe media producers. Now that there're almost no stores, sales have moved almost entirely online, to a handful of core commerce sites. (Okay, really just Amazon, everybody else just fits in the corners.) But if you can't get decent terms with Amazon, or if they turn up their noses at doing business with you ("Porn? No way, this is a family site, gotta go. Hey Joe, order another skid of those Shades of Greys."), what're you going to do? Selling direct in any real way means you have to run a storefront yourself: whether you do that in a minimal way like Code Red, or go more sophisticated like Synapse (or Video-X-Pix's site), it's expensive, complicated, and you eat all the associated costs yourself. Having a distributor means you produce the content (which is what you're good at, and tooled up for), then ship 'em the stock, and they deal with the retailers (online or meatspace), handle the sales, the fulfillment, the returns (alas): it's really the only way to go for small labels/publishers. A shaky ripoff distributor is hell, of course: I hope that comment means there's maybe some movement on getting a good distributor set up, and I hope they'd be able to work with other labels.

Let's kickstart a gutter distributor!

Another update. It looks like the blu ray is presenting a real challenge to them( even with the dual layering) as I would imagine it would, considering all the content. While I am really excited at the extras, the main feature is the most important thing for me. I am confident though that the blu ray transfer will be a knock out-

Looks like the time we've all been waiting for is finally here. The backers just got this e-mail from Steven:

Project Misty Backers:

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued patience, throughout this rather long process. It has been a hell of a project, and one I will never forget. We are definitely in the final stages of all manufacturing, and even though the Blu and CD are almost here, we have decided to announce the official release of the Collector's Edition 2 DVD set as Oct 31, 2012, and then soon after the Blu Ray and CD Soundtrack will follow. We set a date to make a final decision and it passed, so instead of waiting any longer, we want to jumpstart the process. The first step is getting you all of your rewards!

With that said, the Project Misty reward packages will begin to ship tomorrow, Monday October 22, 2012. The reward packages will have 2 basic rounds of shipping. The first package that will be shipped this week, will contain all of the rewards that were included in your reward tier(posters, tees, glasses, prints, etc), with the exception of the BLU and CD.

The Blu and CD, will both be sent as an additional package, as soon as they come in, and we will have to eat the extra cost for shipping, but in this case it is worth it, as I want the backers to have the DVD, before the general public, as that is only fair, and we will do the same for the BLU and CD!!

I am here around the clock getting this stuff done, and I plan to have all of the first round packages shipped out this week before Friday.
Depending on what reward tier you pledged, will determine how many boxes you receive, so backers will get one media box, others will get a media box and a poster roll, and there will even be some shipments, mainly the higher pledge tiers, that are shipped in large boxes, to protect the martini glasses and vintage posters.

I will keep you all posted and please send me any questions, concerns, etc. If there are any issues with your shipments, just send me an email.

I am really looking forward for you guys to take a look at this entire project and I really hope you enjoy the experience as much as we did.

And a very special thanks to the entire team!!

Thank you so much and Congratulations!

Warmest Regards,
Steven

Personally, I would have preferred that they only ship once all the items are in, just so that they don't lose money on shipping, but its great news to think we'll get to see the results of their labor door.

When Misty Met Sandy (http://projectmisty.com/2012/11/03/when-misty-met-sandy/)

This is pretty much what I tought...

Barry M
11-03-2012, 10:17 PM
Thanks, Jimmy.

A silver lining to the dark cloud: the delay due to Sandy means that the Blu-rays have arrived and are being held for us at a nearby FedEx facility. This means they will ship to backers along with the DVDs! The Soundtrack CD still looks like it may take a few more weeks to arrive, and will have to ship separately.

To those of you who have reached out and offered to cover the additional cost of the second shipment– we greatly appreciate the offer, but we’re going to take care of the cost. To international backers who have said that you’re willing to wait and receive your items as a single shipment– we may well take you up on that offer. We’ll keep everyone posted once the power comes back up.

I just mailed & asked 'em to try to combine the blu-ray & dvd shipping to me. They can use any extra dollars they save to soak up water and stuff.

Ian Jane

So the retail date for the Blu-ray (because Richard's been curious about it) is set for 11/14/12.

Diabolik will probably carry it, other retailers too, but you can order direct from www.distribpix.com as well.

I'd just like to note that Steven is still without internet and phone. The Distribpix archive just got power back and he's been working non stop, totally on his own and in a cold building, to get these packages shipped.

He is easily one of the most dedicated people working in the home video business, period. I've never met anyone who puts more of their own blood and sweat into their passion for these films and getting them out to the people who love them. Literally come hell of high water.

My comment wasn't intended as a negative one in any way John, hope it doesn't sound like one as it's just a refence to the fact I'm Canadian and it will take at least 10 days before showing here.

distribpix is also selling it on amazon marketplace. Thanks for the heads up on Diabolik. Everytime I order from Diabolik I have to get a new password from them before they let me log in. Then there's the usual glitches filling out the form so that it will let me use paypal. They really are a pain in the ass at Diabolik. Plus, everytime I ask Diabolik to carry some rare import or find some rare import they tell me their customers would not be interested, when I know damn well their customers would be interested. At xploited, Tony would happily find anything you asked for.

I should have waited for the reviews, but I don't know if it will still be available, so I went ahead and bought it.

It will be pretty funny if I get mine before the pledgers do, huh?

Apronikoff
11-14-2012, 02:40 PM
Wow, I'm shocked to hear about your experience with Diabolik -- my experience has been the exact opposite. Not only have I never had any technical problems with the site, but I've always gotten rather extraordinary customer support from them. You mentioned special orders -- Jesse has ordered items for me before that he had no intention of carrying and just got one copy for me.

So, I'd encourage you not to write them off...I really do think they're the best option available for the kind of stuff they carry...

Jimmy Simard

You will certainly get it before me... but getting it sooner wasn't the reason why I was a pledger, the reason was to get the best film ever made on blu-ray and to show to Steven how much I appreciate the hard work he do.

BTW reading that you had trouble with him and Diabolik DVD when nobody had problem with them (me included and for years) is kind of a hint that you are a tough guy to please anyway...

edit : sometimes I sent email to label and they don't answer (I wait for one answer from a label since friday and nothing happened, I just wait and hope to see my problem resolve itself). I don't make a big deal out of it, they have better thing to do than wasting time emailing and those better things are to work on their products.

The whole pledge thing is so far outside normal business practices that I wouldn't be surprised if he never even saw your email, Richard.Everybody was winging it there, real seat of the pants stuff, from the very idea of the pledge model to show that there was demand for the blu, to getting booted by KS, to the new world of blu production... Richard, this kinda thing happens.
Distribpix is literally a one man operation! Steven assembles every DVD by hand. He doesn't get boxes of finished product. He packs every shipment himself, delivers it to the post office himself, etc.
He has no secretary, no assistant, no nothing. If he missed your email, it was an honest oversight. Definitely not a case of his intentionally ignoring you. The guy works 16 hour days.

Yeah, don't be shitting on Steven because he missed an email. That cat is an over-worked, under-paid LIVING GOD in my eyes for what he does for these movies. My Philips region-free is dead. Now the Panasonic is acting eccentric.

Thanks Richard. The Blu-ray is one disc but 50GB and well authored. The DVD contains the same extras but it's spread over two discs.

The soundtrack CD is a seperate item all together and hasn't started shipping yet. It was included as one of the options on the kickstarter campaign but will be available seperately - there's a link for it on the Distribpix store already (but again, it's not available yet).

Received the soundtrack in the mail this afternoon. An absolutely stunning package with ridiculously comprehensive liner notes. Another round of kudos to Steven et al...

Got mine yesterday too. A really beautiful release and a nice companion piece to the Blu-ray.

Thoroughly humbling comments as well: "This was the easiest pick for me. The gorgeous high definition Blu-ray is, by far, the best XXX film release in the history of home video."

Steven sent out an email this morning stating that he's down to 120 copies of the Blu-ray. It'll probably get repressed but there's no ETA as to when just yet, so anyone who wants one? Now might be a good time to pull the trigger as once this batch is gone, it could be a while before there are more on the market.

Glad to see this sell well for him.

Yeah that is encouraging. I'd love to see this continued treatment given to some of the great pornos.

I pulled the trigger a few weeks ago and watched it last weekend. It took me a while to get comfortable with spending $30. That's a lot for a film I'm not familiar with. It was money well spent. I was amazed by the treatment it received and enjoyed the film. It's a fantastic package. I wish all 70's and 80's porn looked this good.

Count me in on all future releases that get this kind of treatment.
