Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are my all-time favorite band. The only group I've ever flown cross-country just to see. (Saw them in Dallas on Lollapalooza in 94, in New Orleans on their greatest hits tour in 98, and an acoustic show at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco in 2001). So even though I basically never keep up with "new" music -- this is one album I'm REALLY looking forward to.

Ian Jane
11-27-2012, 02:33 PM
While I dug the two Grinderman albums enough, I'm looking forward to this too. They haven't been as good since Blixa left, but I'm always willing to give Cave's new stuff a chance. They're one of my favorite bands of all time.

Apronikoff

They haven't been as good since Blixa left

True.

Of all the items I've lost over the years through moves, thieving roommates and whatnot, none upsets me more than no longer having the copy of Blixa's book that I got him to autograph back in 98. I had both that and a Cave autographed copy of King Ink and they're both long gone. :nono:

Ian Jane
11-27-2012, 02:45 PM
Yeah, that would piss me off too.

I saw them in Portland on what would turn out to be Blixa's last tour and they were great. Haven't seen them play but I'd imagine the live show, while still awesome (Cave's dance moves rule!), wouldn't be quite as intense.

I have a great bootleg DVD-R of a Bad Seeds show from Ohio in, I think, 1984 that has an interview with Nick and Blixa tacked on from after the show where they've both got giant goth hair and black sunglasses and appear to be strung out on smack. It's pretty great.

Roderick

I saw the Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! tour and they could still raise a good ruckus without Blixa, but yeah, it wasn’t quite the same as when he was in the fold. I was initially pretty underwhelmed by most of the post Blixa albums, but over time they have grown on me quite a bit. Now I just wish Blixa would get more productive again. There was a massive burst of Neubauten activity after he left the Bad Seeds, but the last album of new EN material was in 2007 and since then his only musical output has been his ANBB project back in 2010 and vocals on two songs on the X-TG Desertshore album.

I'd say it falls in the middle of the pack of the post Blixa albums.

I'd agree. It's a bit more mellow than I was hoping it would be but I like it after two listens at work on Spotify, which is never the ideal way to really evaluate something, but the CD should be waiting for me when I get home.

Roderick
02-19-2013, 02:55 PM
Yeah, after two energetic Grinderman records and the last Bad Seeds album I was also hoping this one would have more kick, but no dice. But even so, it's still a pretty good listen.

And on a side note I scored 3rd row seats at the Seattle show in April. :)

Roderick

Anybody else see the performance that was streamed live last night? It was good stuff with Cave performing the new album followed by a nice handful of classics. Nick was in good spirits and the Bad Seeds are backed up by a full string section and a kids' choir. It looks like you can watch the whole show again for at least 24 hours HERE. (http://www.youtube.com/nickcavelive) It's worth a look/listen.

Ian Jane
02-22-2013, 11:05 AM
I was watching bits and pieces of it this morning before doing actual work. He and the band sound good. I'm looking forward to the show next month.

New album is growing on me a bit. I still think some of the writing is uninspired (catch/snatch/match?) and referencing Hanna Montana isn't going to win him any points probably but I do like that he's apparently got a thing for mermaids now. I like mermaids.

Roderick
02-22-2013, 02:11 PM
It's weird how the album gets meta at the end and there's a song about finishing an earlier song on the album. And as you mentioned, the pop culture references on the album feel strange, but at least it's not half as bad as when Alice Cooper goes down that road. No hip-hop hippos here.

Mark Tolch
02-22-2013, 02:18 PM
Nick Cave references Hannah Montana? (shudder)

Roderick

Yeah. He's also apparently obsessed with Wikipedia these days.

Roderick

On a less scary note here are some highlights from a recent Q&A. (http://www.nme.com/news/nick-cave-and-the-bad-seeds/68795)
----
Cave was asked which of his own songs he was proudest of and named, 'Jack The Ripper', from the Bad Seeds' 1992 album 'Henry's Dream'. He added: "My favorite album is 'Nocturama' mostly because everybody hates it, someone's gotta look out for it."

He also spoke about the impact of drugs on his creativity, writing: "Early period, largely positive. Middle period, more problematic. Late period, total destruction."

Ian Jane
02-22-2013, 02:37 PM
Yeah. He's also apparently obsessed with Wikipedia these days.

It's heaven.

The Sick Bag Song chronicles
Nick Cave's 2014 tour of North
America with The Bad Seeds.
The account of this 22-city journey
began life scribbled on airline sick bags
and grew into a restless full-length epic,
seeking out the roots of inspiration,
love and meaning.

Anyone else check out Skeleton Key yet? It's pretty sad stuff when you think about what he's been through, but there are moments of brightness in here. It's fairly raw in certain regards, less polished than the last album and I like that about it.

Koukol

I skipped the last album but I read it's his biggest seller.
As I already said I've collected his incarnations longer than anybody so I've got all the original vinyl from BOYS NEXT DOOR to THE BOATMAN (I think) all bought when released as Imports.
I then moved to CDs

I'll definitely check this out at some point (the library usually collects his stuff).

Does anyone know the tragic story of his son?

I listened to this last night and I gotta say it's one of the saddest and most beautiful albums ever.
I Need You is heartbreaking.
It's so raw and honest.
I can picture him standing over his sons coffin with these thoughts.

Ironically, this release reminds me of The Firstborn Is Dead... but with synths.
I'll have to look into his last release which was the first one I skipped in almost 30 years.

Ian Jane
09-14-2016, 02:53 PM
I actually like Push The Sky Away (the last release before this newest) a lot, I think it's fantastic but like most of his albums it took some time to grow on me.

This new one - it's almost too sad in spots. It is a beautiful piece of work, but I'm not sure how often I'll listen to it over some of his others because when I had it on in the car on the way home the other day it was really getting to me. Some gorgeous compositions though and a lot of great songwriting here.

Roderick
09-14-2016, 04:59 PM
I think Push the Sky Away was Cave’s best Bad Seed record since Let Love In. (Murder Ballads is held in high regard by many, but I think it’s uneven. Cave’s take on Stagger Lee is definitive however.) The new album is very good, but it’s probably not going to be a “go to” album for me. I will still give it multiple more spins to fully digest but ultimately I will probably only listen to it when I’m in a very specific mood or am taking a deep dive into the discography.
