He's made some good movies....Hope this one is good too!

Doppleganger, Pulse and Cure were all solid - I don't know that I've seen anything else.

GUARD FROM THE UNDERGROUND was a good stalk and slash...

Serpent's Path shot back to back with Eyes of the Spider are two good movies with two different takes on the idea of revenge starring Shô Aikawa

I made it my job to seek out a lot of his earlier stuff many years ago.....but , ironically, I have never seen his best known movie PULSE...LOL!

Pulse was the first of his films that I saw right in the middle of the J-Horror boom a few years back. It's worth seeing.

Ah...the J-horror boom...that would explain why I skipped it at the time!!!

How was the Hollywood remake???(Do I really have to ask???)

He also started out making pink films. His The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl is kinda like a pink film as made by Godard on one of his more pretentious days. Interesting, if a little ponderous...

He also started out making pink films. .

I guess that quite a lot of Japanese movie makers must have worked on Pink movies as they were starting out....

I think CURE is simply amazing, every film as his I've seen has been at least interesting, he's one of the best directors in Japan right now I think.

I enjoyed both of these as well. Probably my favorites aside from CURE. Both pale in comparison to say Kim Ji Woon's I SAW THE DEVIL in terms of visceral revenge flicks but still a notch above the norm especially considering both of these were shot straight to video. Despite being low budget, I enjoyed both of these much more than say THE NEIGHBOR NO.13.

I seem to remember the Kurosawa pics as being a bit more complex than I SAW THE DEVIL though....or maybe my memory is laying tricks again...

Nope, you're memory is fine. I actually meant what you said but obviously didn't convey it properly in my previous post. I meant for folks expecting another ISTD type revenge thriller replete with gory killings are going to be disappointed as Kurosawa's two revenge flicks are more psychological complex & cerebral especially Serpent's Path.

I might actually have to go back and watch these again ...not seen them for years....

It is underwhelming. After seeing it, I tried weakly to defend it against my wife's meh and a shrug, and couldn't. But I never have had any real defense against shrugs.

Crikey ...She gave it a MEH AND a shrug?????

Their is no earthly defense against this double combo!!

Might give it a miss now then...double disappointment...
