So says this Den of Geek (http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/the-equalizer/22107/denzel-washington-to-play-the-equalizer) article, which also notes that the producers hope this will be the start of a new franchise.

"There's been talk of a movie of The Equalizer, on and off, for some time now. However, it seems that the moment has come, as Sony Pictures has greenlit the movie, with Denzel Washington on board to star.

He'll step into the role played by the late Edward Woodward on the small screen in the 1980s, working this time from a screenplay by Richard Wenk (who penned The Expendables 2). Sony has put together a shortlist of potential directors, and they include Drive's Nicolas Winding Refn, Warrior's Gavin O'Connor, and The Raid's Gareth Evans. A formal appointment is presumably not far away."

Deadline New York (http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/sony-pictures-sets-april-8-start-for-denzel-washington-to-play-the-equalizer/) has more on it. Sony will be handling the movie and has set an April 2013 start for production.

"The hot project on the Sony Pictures lot right now is The Equalizer, after a script by Richard Wenk prompted the studio to expedite Denzel Washington’s deal and set an April 8 start date, likely in Boston. Washington was attached when this was mentioned as a development project last year as the studio extended by three years its first look deal with Escape Artists partners Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch. It has come a long way since then."

No director set but the article states: "I’ve heard names on the studio’s list that include Pierre Morel, Nicolas Winding Refn, Gavin O’Connor and Gareth Evans. Insiders tell me that the studio is just now setting meetings and that there will be a bunch of them before a director is set."

This could be interesting. It probably won't be, but it could be.

I tell ya something...this AINT gonna be the WOODWARD version of the Equalizer.....It'll be some lame "rent a death wish" type movie where people call up Denzel when they need someone offing...and he will do it DENZEL STYLE.....

They need to make this move with someone like Michael Caine in the lead...THEN they might do it right...Could even be a sequel to HARRY BROWN....

I used to love the way Woodward would use his English accent to talk down to the low life villains he used to get,,,,and give them a good sermon before finishing

Wish it was Clive Owen.

How about Tom Hardy?...bit to tough guy-ish...but he absorbs himself into whatever role he has....

Christian Bale?

Daniel Radcliffe from Harry Potter?

Robert Pattinson?

anyone who exudes an aura of "cool" and has an English accent would be ok....

Jason Statham?

Surely the point of the Equalizer was that he was an old guy dealing out justice to bad young 'uns?

Ian McShane could pull it off.

Ian McKellen would bring the right amount of class to this movie!

That ain't the EQUALIZER my friends....

Looks more like a cross between DEATH WISH and TAKEN.....

Not saying it wont be entertaining...but it AIN'T EDWARD WOODWARD's THE EQUALIZER that we know and love...

Woodward was just 100 times classier than this...AND WHERE IS THE THEME TUNE?????

(PS. and that shit with timing himself beating up the bad guys is just lame!)

i like the fact that he works at a "Home Depot" style store.....so he can borrow the various tools to enact his revenge....then clean them off and sell them to the unsuspecting public!

Good job I found your thoughts on another thread or I would have been waiting here for a VERY long time!!

Your thoughts pretty much summed up my expectations for this movie......So I will probably catch it when it comes on free tv!!!

I STILL love the way they have to write "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF TRAINING DAY"......That movie was like , 2001...a good 13 years ago....Shows how well the directors career went after that movie!!!

Yeah... I keep thinking about how miscast this film was. Noone except maybe Denzel fit their roles. And they still had no depth to portray in these characters, so it shouldn't have been so hard.
