I dunno why the text in that post is tiny and blue but I don't care enough to fix it. Regardless, I'd like to see Full Moon do more with thier catalogue in HD. Castle Freak would be a very, very welcome addition.

The evil puppets have a wide reach.

I'd be interested in CASTLE FREAK too.

Dig that cover. Hopefully a domestic release will follow quickly, but if the price is right on that import, I might have to bite.

Shawn, do you know the release date of the US CASTLE FREAK Blu-ray?

Shawn Francis

No, I wish I did. Here's an excerpt from the press release, though, from DREAD CENTRAL (http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/56814/more-full-moon-classics-hitting-blu-ray-and-being-remastered). So, just know it IS coming. I keep checking Amazon and Band's site every so often for signs of it:

"On September 18th, 2012, the premiere Full Moon Blu-ray releases will be the first three Puppetmaster films, available individually and as a three-disc set. Subsequent releases will include sequels from the Subspecies and Trancers franchises, as well as classic films directed by Stuart Gordon such as Pit and the Pendulum starring Lance Henkrisen and Castle Freak starring Jeffrey Combs."

I would imagine the cover art would be the same, too. I've heard 88 Films is Band's overseas distributor.

Ooooh, PIT AND THE PENDULUM Blu-ray

Ian Jane

Excellent news. Their first Blu-ray releases weren't mind blowingly great, here's hoping these are better. I'm not completely nuts over everything Full Moon has done but they really do have a few serious gems in their library that would totally benefit from a good HD upgrade.

I assume the trailers are remastered, right? I didn't see much of a difference though in terms of quality.

Band's 88 Films in the UK will be releasing CASTLE FREAK on blu and DVD in January, and as an extra feature they are adding his THE EVIL CLERGYMAN short film to it, which was initially set for release separately over here early next month. No sign of it's pre-order up anywhere. I'm guessing FREAK will be coming out here in Jan as well.

I just saw that on Band's FB page. So, looks like it'll be a separate release after all here in the states. Hoping it's cheap, but I may be out of money come this Wednesday. Finally getting a region free blu-ray player.

Six months ago I'd have said the same thing but I've actually really enjoyed going back to the first three Puppet Master movies recently. They're much better and more fun than I remember. Watched Part III last night, cool to see Richard Lynch in it even if his German accent is not very good at all. I like the way they tied in some of the characters to the puppets.

Shit Ian...now this HAS intrigued me!!!

Maybe I will appreciate these movies better by watching them again...but I am not brave (or stupid ) enough to try it...If I did I would eventually find myself sitting through the GHOULIES movies again too one day!!!

Coincidentally, I'm planning to revisit the early Puppet Master films too, after reading some reviews of the BDs. I haven't watched them in a looong time. I'm going to watch them from the budget sets that I have first, if they hold up well enough I'll consider upgrading.

Apparantly the UK Blu-ray of the first movie is the way to go, has a better transfer and more extras. The transfer on the US release of the first movie was ok but nothing amazing. 2 and 3 look great though.

Pit And The Pendulum coming to Blu-ray for the first time, and remastered for DVD, with AMAZING Widescreen color correction, 5.1 sound, with an incredible amount of extras:

* In the quest to save souls, the Spanish Inquisition will stop at nothing and knows no boundaries for its evil. Under the direction of Torquemada (LANCE HENRIKSEN - “Alien,” “Pumpkinhead,” “Millennium”) the Grand Inquisitor of Spain, a young baker’s wife, Maria (RONA DE RICCI) is falsely accused of witchcraft and dragged before the inquisition and the Cardinal (OLIVER REED – “Gladiator,” “Three Musketeers”). Torquemada is enchanted by Maria’s beauty and subjects her and her husband Antonio (JONATHAN FULLER – “Castle Freak”) to heinous tortures hoping to prove that his own desires for her are a result of her magic, and that she has “bewitched him.” With the help of Esmerelda, Maria’s cellmate and confessed witch, Maria must find the power to save her husband Antonio from Torquemada’s ultimate machine of torture: the inevitable, razor sharp PENDULUM poised over the inescapable PIT of hell.

I have those two pre-ordered on Amazon UK (Castle Freaks is pre-ordered for quite some time), so I'll keep it as it is. But I have this one pre-ordered for may and our price via Amazon Canada is better than the Amazon price

If you want more puppets, Demonic Toys will be release in september (strange because I'm sure it was supposed to be sooner last time I checked...).

I received the 88 Films Blu-rays of Castle Freak and The Pit and the Pendulum a couple of days ago. I've only had time to skip through the discs, so I can't confirm if they're the unrated versions, but I can safely say that they look better than they ever have.

Paul L
08-30-2013, 06:01 PM
Both are the unrated versions, apparently :) Happily the previous BBFC cuts have been waived to CASTLE FREAK.

What's the dealio with 88 Films' impending release of TRANCERS 1.5? Does anyone have any news on this?

So, anyone got any recommendations for a good online retailer for buying some of these? Play.com dont seem to have them all and charge lots for them.

Paul L

Play.com are just an online marketplace now, so they're not very reliable at all. Sainsbury's are good and quick. (I use them instead of Amazon wherever possible.) I don't know about shipping to Europe, however.

Had time to watch Castle Freak over the weekend and I can confirm that it's the unrated version. While the 1.85:1 framing looks a little tight at times, overall it suits the film well. Great release.

Were either CASTLE FREAK or THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM made for cable television, originally? Full Moon had previously released them in full-screen editions, and I kinda sorta got used to that, so I was wondering. The new blu-rays are darker -- much darker -- and widescreen at 1.85. I'd prefer the 1:85 aspect ratio if it kept more info on top and bottom, which I became accustomed to, in addition to the additional info on the side(s), of the blu's but I also prefer the slightly brighter DVD's. Just a click or two brighter, the DVD's. In some areas I think the blu's are a click or two too dark. I wonder if the timer isn't vignetting the frame, because the densities seem a little strange where they go bright and light.

I don't know.

To paraphrase Barbara Stanwyck, I don't understand why I don't understand it.

I've never seen SUBSPECIES, but I'd agree with Ian about the first three PUPPET MASTER pictures - especially the third film in the series, which takes the premise back to Nazi Germany(!?!?) I also love the first few TRANCERS films. I think they're worth tracking down, when the company get round to releasing them on Blu.

I'm tempted by the new Blus of DEMONIC TOYS, which I've never seen, and DOLLMAN because it marries Tim Thomerson and Albert Pyun - not that that's a recommendation to most normal folk, but still...

The Silly Swede
10-23-2013, 05:29 PM
Dollman is quite fun, I bought it.

I also bought Mandroid, The Pit and the Pendulum and Cannibal Women in the Avocado Djungle of Death. I had a bad Movie night with Mandroid, Avocado and my german DVD of Hell comes to frogtown. Quite nice actually. Made me feel like a VHS renting 16 year again....

Made me feel like a VHS renting 16 year again....
Yes, I think that's part of the appeal of some of these films for me too - I can remember seeing some of the titles on the shelf of my local video rental shop, or reading about them in magazines, but never got round to renting all of them.
