Scott Derrickson proved himself a good storyteller in The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) and I've been waiting to see if he would work in the genre again (the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still doesn't count). According to imdb he has more horror films in the works.

Sinister looks promising:

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose wasn't perfect but it was good enough that I'd check out more of his work.

Possible SPOILERS!!!!

I forgot there was a thread for this. Saw it Saturday and liked it quite a bit. Subtract a few points for too many instances of LOUD noise scares. That Bleeding Cool review overpraises the scary factor though, it's far more of a subtle creeper. The home movies are very disquieting and the supernatural character, Mr. Boogie, in the brief glimpses we see of him, is a memorable spook. A tad less so if you're familiar with black metal bands and corpse paint though. The ghostly kids that show up in the last half hour were unnecessary I thought, Mr. B should've been a solo act. Still well worth checking out and a nice change of pace.

Saw the sequel over the weekend. Meh, not very impressed. The whole story revolves around a mother in hiding with her two sons, they're on the run from the abusive and influential father. The deputy from the first film is back, now a private investigator travelling around the country trying to stop the murders. Follows the standard route all the way and none of the characters remotely resemble a real person. The ghost kids are more annoying than spooky and black metal guy seems like he's playing support to them. On the plus side, as in the first film a couple of the home movies are kind of disturbing - there's one involving alligators that was genuinely chilling - and the overall tone is pretty grim but it's not enough to raise this out of generic land. Really crappy ending too, inevitably leaving the door open for another (which is probably unlikely given the very tepid box office so far).
