I'm fairly new to these films, so recommend me a couple of good ones please. Not the big classics of course (Bruce Lee, 5 Deadly Venoms, 36th Chamber, ...), I'm talking about more obscure films. I've been bitten by a bug after viewing Five Element Ninja's recently.

Thanks!

You're looking for the goofier trashier stuff?

Ninja The Final Duel is essential.

Anything by Godfrey Ho with Richard Harrison wearing a headband is also essential, sort of. Essential in a horrible sort of way.

And while it might have been made in Florida, Miami Connection (on Blu-ray next week) has a lot of ninjas in it. Evil ninjas who hate orphans and love cocaine.

Here's what I like -

SWORDSMAN II
THE BLADE (Tsui Hark)
MAGIC OF SPELL
BRUCE LEE FIGHTS BACK FROM THE GRAVE
THE GUY FROM HARLEM
NINJA TERMINATOR
DRAGONS FOREVER

Willem - give us more specfics! You want period films? Classic martial arts? Shaw stuff? Trash classic? Nutty stuff?

My message probably needed a bit more specifics, you're right. I'm looking for films that have a decent level of quality, so not the ultra trashy stuff. Even though I like them, I saw dozens of Godfrey Ho monstrosities as a kid, so nothing like that please, unless there are ninja/samurai trash classics I really need to see. I prefer period pieces, so no modern day kung fu specialists on the loose in NY :) Joseph Kuo's films look interesting for example.

Hmm. Have you seen Battle Wizard? It straddles the line between crazy and well made in interesting ways.

Shaws did it so it has reasonably good production values but doesn't skimp on the insanity.

I've got it but have yet to watch it. I should fix that soon.

Thanks for the recommendations. I had already seen Ninja in the Dragon's Den, but the rest of the suggestions are brand new to me. Cheers!
If you have more, keep 'em coming!

I finally got to watch my Boxer's Omen DVD and I was stunned. What a great film! A crazy buddhist horror film that looks like a mixture between The Holy Mountain and an 80s Van Damme kickbox film is just what I needed! :)

Glad you dug it, I love that movie! I wish the US companies were still interested in releasing Shaw stuff but it seems to have more or less dried up.

Yeah, I really loved it. Any similar films to recommend?

If you liked Boxer's Omen, I would recommend a couple other Shaw horrors... Black Magic, Black Magic 2, Killer Snakes, Human Lanterns

All of those are gold. Seeding Of A Ghost is awesome too.
