View Full Version : Twin Peaks Coming Back To TV?

Maybe. (http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/twin-peaks/23962/is-twin-peaks-coming-back-to-tv)

"According to a suspect anonymous forum post (yes, that's roughly as official as this one gets), David Lynch has been in talks with NBC to discuss a possible revival for the early nineties show that brought the world the Red Room, the Log Lady, and the world's most terrifying accidental on-screen appearance by a set dresser."

But I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I doubt it.

I am torn on this. Twin Peaks is one of my favorite tv shows. And while I would like more episodes, will Lynch be able to capture the magic from the first run?

Mark Tolch
01-03-2013, 07:25 PM
I think it'll be cool because it's Lynch, but I don't think it'll touch the original. I'd like it if the network said, "Hey, this guy got a tv show and made a really awesome thing that people are still talking about years later....let's give him another shot at a show."

Reply from Showtime says it's nothing more than the usual negotiations.

Streaming and home video rights seem to be the bone of contention here. I'd be very surprised after all of this if it doesn't happen. It might be delayed but it seems all involved have put in too much time and effort to just walk away from it.

And besides, it's not like Lynch has got a whole lot else going on production wise - and he's not getting any younger. If he's going to take on a big project like this, now's the time.

Dom D
04-05-2015, 07:48 PM
Post from David Lynchs facebook says that he's out as showtime is not offering enough money. Also says it might go forward without him. Seems a fairly pathetic sequence of events. Why announce it if the contracts aren't signed?

There was a time when Lynch was happy to basically work for free to make Vlue Velvet. I'm sure the deal with Showtime was a hell of a lot more generous than ehat he was offered on that film. Pretty safr to say the man doesn't have the fire in the belly anymore.

Mark Tolch
04-06-2015, 12:33 AM
I'm trying to figure out if he means they're not paying him enough, or if they're not putting enough money into the reboot to do it properly. Either way, no Lynch is a huge disappointment. :(

Wernski

I'm trying to figure out if he means they're not paying him enough, or if they're not putting enough money into the reboot to do it properly.

The latter. This is a quote from him on twitter (https://twitter.com/DAVID_LYNCH/status/584855237946552320): "After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done."

I was skeptical of this venture when Lynch was still on board, so I really don't think I'll be messing with the show now without him.

Dom D
04-06-2015, 04:20 AM
Strange that Showtime stills seems to think that they are in negotiations and hope to make it happen. Seems like there's some very strange behaviour going on here on someones side. My bet is its not showtimes but who knows?

Mark Tolch
04-06-2015, 08:14 AM
I'll watch it. But Lynch's non-involvement was what went wrong with the original.

JLG
04-06-2015, 10:28 AM
maybe Lynch is just more focused on coffee, music, and meditation. if Showtime doesn't want to hit his asking price then he doesn't need to change anything. how long ago was Inland Empire?

I really don't want Inland Empire to be the last thing Lynch gives us.

Terry C
04-06-2015, 02:12 PM
Me either to say the least.

I hope another network (coughhbocough) with a bigger budget and pull can pick up the reigns, though you would think Showtime would be able to match the price after all the hype this has gotten. Strange and sad, my fingers are crossed that this manages to all work itself out somehow.

JLG

Can clearly tell the (few) episodes that Lynch himself directed in the first two series..when it wasn't him they were a bit hit and miss in their consistency.

NEED Lynch back on this....and I would have thought he would like to close the book on the series once and for all....

http://welcometotwinpeaks.com/news/18-new-twin-peaks-episodes-angelo-badalamenti-washington-state/

The forthcoming third season revival of Twin Peaks on Showtime will now feature 18 episodes, all directed by David Lynch, reports Welcome to Twin Peaks.

Series stars Sherilyn Fenn and Sheryl Lee reportedly revealed the information during a Twin Peaks panel at Crypticon in Seattle this weekend, according to various sources.

Lynch, who co-created the series and directed a number of episodes including the pilot and Season Two (then series) finale, will co-write the episodes with Mark Frost, his co-creator, who will write a companion book set during the missing two decades-plus between seasons.

Original series composer Angelo Badalamenti will reportedly compose new music for the series, and Twede’s Cafe in North Bend, Washington, will be restored as the original Double R Diner set.

The series had originally been expected to run for nine episodes, which would be directed by Lynch, with the possibility of more down the line if the series was successful. Lynch briefly walked away from the project when budgetary negotiations with Showtime broke down, but recently came back with an unspecified amount of additional work to do on the show.

I'm now doubly stoked. Any doubts I had...gone. Looking forward to it. I think it was Lynch's non-involvement and network pressure that botched the second season of the show, and I'm very excited to see where he's going to take the storyline.

Delayed to 2017. Probably a good thing though, although the "See you in 25 years" line gets ruined. Considering his age and how hard it's been for him to get financing for his films, this might be one of Lynch's final projects, so I hope the added time might make this all that it could be.

Actually, Robert Forster replaced Ontkean. Supposedly Forster was the original choice but had other commitments so Ontkean got the part. The whole Ontkean thing is odd. He is retired and now living in Hawaii (his last film was in 2011). When the revival was first announced, Ontkean was all for doing it and was even trying to find his old outfit. All of a sudden he's "retired" and didn't want to do it. Sounds like an interesting story might be there.

I still haven't watched this series. Is it still worth seeing if I know who killed Laura Palmer? Is the mystery an essential part of the fun?

Mark Tolch
01-10-2017, 05:39 PM
They got rid of that mystery early on because of network pressure. I'm not a huge fan of most of what followed, but I still consider Twin Peaks to be some of the most essential television ever made.

Matt H.
01-10-2017, 07:39 PM
I know I have to see it before the new one starts: there's no way I'm going to miss 18+ hours of new Lynch material.

I've heard that Season 2 is tough to get through.

Dom D
01-11-2017, 02:21 AM
Season 2 is tough to get through. I'd be surprised if it gets referenced a huge amount though. I doubt Lynch loves it much either. After the killers unmasked I'd probably just skip to the last couple of episodes to see where it finished off at. Actually it did finish off at a cliff hanger now I come to think of it... Interested to see how they tackle that. Given the 20 year gap I can't really see them picking that thread up again.

Mark Tolch
01-11-2017, 11:47 AM
I was surprised at how annoying Season 2 was when I rewatched it with the last blu-ray set. I apparently was a lot more patient in my youth. There are a whole lot of storylines in there that are loathsome....lazy writing. Would've been interesting to see what happened if Lara Flynn Boyle hadn't botched the whole Cooper/Audrey angle with her snitting.

Roderick
01-11-2017, 12:04 PM
On future re-viewings I will watch Season 2 up to the episode after the revealing of the killer and then skip to the last episode. There is an episode near the end that does a brief recap of the crappy middle section and that's actually a good place to pick the season back up, but I don't remember which episode that as.

As for season 3, my understanding is that the two hour premier is actually episodes 1 and 2 playing back-to-back and not a super long first episode.

David Lynch, Unsurprisingly Cryptic, in a Surprise Appearance (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/10/arts/television/david-lynch-unsurprisingly-cryptic-in-a-surprise-appearance.html?smid=fb-share)

PASADENA, Calif. — Even for 15 minutes, David Lynch stole the show.

Mr. Lynch, the filmmaker behind movies like “Mulholland Drive” and “Blue Velvet,” appeared at an event here on Monday to talk about the much-anticipated revival of his TV drama, “Twin Peaks.” The show will return, with a robust 18-hour season, in late May on Showtime.

Mr. Lynch — who has been tight-lipped when it comes to providing any meaningful details about the show — was not expected to speak at the event, held during a gathering of the Television Critics Association. But his surprise appearance left an impression on a weary press corps, even though he divulged little about “Twin Peaks,” which ran for two seasons on ABC in the early 1990s.

Here some of the more notable moments from Mr. Lynch’s almost poetic appearance:

Yeah, I'd be hard-pressed to think of any other corporate President/CEO's that would use the word "heroin" as an adjective in describing the rollout of their new product.

I can not stand Laura Dern for the most part. She is moderately tolerable in BLUE VELVET. Other than that, I do not like her. That cow is pretty swell, though.

I read a little blurb in Rue Morgue that Lynch has revealed that FIRE WALK WITH ME will be "very important" to the new season.

What sucks is that since it's on Showtime that means all the episodes won't be available to watch at once. Netflix has spoiled us.

I'm good with this. I rarely have time to binge more than a couple of episodes in a row so this way I won't have to worry about buttholes on the internerd spoiling things before I can watch.

"Buttholes on the Internerd" sounds like a name for Butthole Surfers tribute band.

I am happy with the weekly wait for TP season 3. But then even with most Netflix shows I space stuff out so I don't have as long a wait for the next season.

Is it just me or does this verge on being tedious? It takes this show a long time to do very little. I'm not sure those first four episodes couldn't have been 1... At least it's not quirky. Old Twin Peaks was always too quirky to be prime Lynch for me. This one needs to speed things up though. And why is the soundtrack so empty and boring? Lynch used to be a great sound man. This show is mostly silent.
