I thought of making a new thread dedicated to films like this after watching 'Flavia, la monaca musulmana'. I was rather impressed by it. The first half hour is a bit slow, but then the action really gets going! It wasn't sleazy for the sake of being sleazy, this film had something to say. Favourite scenes: the nun who crawls into the slaughtered cow, the last supper where they eat the naked nun, the skinning, ... I could have done without the horse castration scene, even though it probably didn't happen for real.

Some other favourites:

- Behind Convent Walls: the most openly erotic nunsploito I've seen, but that's not its biggest quality. Some scenes are simply amazing and very original. I really like the dream-like haze that covers everything.

- Sinful nuns of Saint Valentine: the most atmospheric one! This one scores a lot of points just for the mood. Melancholic/tragic with a touch of dementia.

- The Devils: probably the only nunsploitation film that truly is a world cinema classic.

- School of the Holy Beast: in my opinion, the most 'surreal' one.

I'm a fan. The recent release of Visions Of Ecstasy was a nice addition to what's already been available. Sacred Flesh makes a nice double feature with it. Artsy and sleazy but interesting and worth seeing.

The glory days of the genre are long gone to be sure but a lot of these movies still hold up. I like the way they tend to subvert tattoos and overtly sexualize things that shouldn't necessarily be sexualized as far as the conventions of society are concerned.

Hope I don't shit on your thread but this is one of the more lame sub-genres. In that the cheese-value is usually low and it's hard to think of the few genuinely good titles.

I consider The Devil's to be more of a satire on religion in general, but the Nunsploitation element is definitely there and it's obvious to see why it would be under that umbrella even though it is well above the sub-genre.

School of the Holy Beast is a damn good choice and one I forget, no doubt because of its Japanese origin. Amazing film, Norifumi Suzuki's 2nd best picture.

One that I think is a little underrated would be Killer Nun. Almost every review and message board post complains about this picture. I'm not calling it a masterpiece but Anita Ekberg was good in it and there's some camp value with seeing her in a film like this. Just as there's camp value in seeing Ursula Andress in Mountain of the Cannibal God (also a Swiss actress, coincidence??). I didn't think the story was slow, the kills I thought were pretty good, there's some cheesy moments but I thought it was pretty good all things considered. Better than it's reputation. Plus it features that gorgeous fucking brunette Paola Morra. She raises the film up a notch.

Another one I like purely as a porn is D'amato's Images in A Convet. Really well shot porn and IMHO D'amato's best porno.

Flavia the Heretic has it's moments.

I like some of these but quite a few are a tough watch for me (too slow). I do like THE OTHER HELL and SCHOOL OF THE HOLY BEAST, as well as Joe D'Amato's entries. I need to watch FLAVIA, I've had it for years and have yet to open it.

The Other Hell, yeah... I keep wanting to like that one as I'm a fan of most of Mattei's Shitfests. But, I find myself falling asleep much of the time. Aside from a few classic Mattei moments (The demon with christmas tree lights for eyes and a blatant baby doll filling in for an infant) it's a very lackluster picture committing the cardinal sin of cinema in neither being bad or good but boring.

I come down on the completely opposite side of the fence form Alex where this sub-genre is concerned. I am a huge fan of the nunsploitation fare, and feel a compulsion to own every classic naughty nun flick that comes out on DVD. (I use the term classic not as a reference to quality, but to age. I don't have any interest in modern crap like "Nude Nuns with Big Guns" but anything from the genre from the 60's though the 80's I'll buy.)

Why do I like the genre so much? Part of it, I'm sure, is having grown up in a highly conservative religious tradition and so finding inherent pleasure in the debasement of religious icons. Then there's the fact that, at least where the European stuff (and the Mexican ones too, for that matter) is concerned, the power of the Catholic church in many of the countries where they were made brings out the anti-authoritarian spirit in a lot of the filmmakers which is great fun. Also, the setting and context lends itself well to attractive aesthetic qualities.

So what are my favorites in the genre (as noone was asking)?

1) Behind Convent Walls (1977 Borowczyk)
2) Alucarda (1978 Moctezuma)
3) School of the Holy Beast (1974 Suzuki)
4) Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun (1977 Franco)
5) Satanico Pandemonium (1975 Solares)
6) Sins of Sister Lucia (1978 Ohara)
7) Images in a Convent (1979 D'Amato)

Bring on the naughty nuns!

(And no, I haven't seen The Devils -- that's something I really need to rectify with a quickness)

ALUCARDA is one of my favourite films and like THE DEVILS and SCHOOL OF THE HOLY BEAST manages to offer a lot more than the subgenre usually supplies.

Sins Of Sister Lucia is worth seeing too.

The giallo THE WEAPON THE HOUR THE MOTIVE would fit in this genre too, it has a pretty potent scene where several nuns indulge in self flagellation and most of it is set in and around a church. I sure wish that Koch set that includes this would hurry up and get released.

Damn, I forgot Alucarda and Satanico Pandemonium! Great stuff!

Apronikoff, you have a nice way of putting it. I also tend to enjoy blasphemy and I love it when art criticises religion in an original way, or an ultra-sleazy way :)

I re-watched Killer Nun last night. Held up well, love those parts where it goes into full art house territory. Good film, way better than The Magdalene Sisters at least.

Franco's LES DEMONS is a personal favorite of mine.

That cover art is terrible and great at the same time.

Has anyone seen Robert J. Avrech's Death of a Nun? Seems more like a thriller than a typical nunsploitation movie. There's a torrent around but I always want to make sure there's no legit version to support before going that route.

I also know it had a UK VHS release and that the same UK VHS release has been bootlegged by various grey market sources.

Wow, Ian! I remember seeing that VHS years ago but never acquired a copy because I never read a positive review of the film. I think the nun plays quite a small role in the film, however - at least, as far as I can remember from the reviews I read.

From what I can find, Paul, you're right. That cover sure sells it though!

Killer Nun is one of my favorites, as well. School of the Holy Beast, Images in a Convent (Paola Senatore and Marina Hedman!), Sister Emmanuelle and Alucarda being up there, as well.

I cannot explain the allure of a (sexy) nun...it must be the forbidden fruit/you'll-go-to-hell-for-this nature that drives me to get turned on by (sexy) nuns. It even goes so far as to bleed into nuns in non-nunsploitation movies. Saving Silverman...there's a good looking nun in there...Nacho Libre...that has a good one too.

But then you have Whoopi Goldberg in that movie with all the non-sexy nuns. I can't even remember the name. OH! Sister Act. Total poop.

Man...I wish Russ Meyer had done something with nuns. Can you imagine Sheri Eubank in a habit? I love boobs.

For Christmas last year my Grandmother wanted me to get her the Sister Act/Sister Act 2 double feature. Thankfully I couldn't find it so I bought her a DVD about the Royal Wedding instead.

If you were a good grandson you would have bought her School of the Holy Beast

Maybe that's why she never calls anymore.
