I haven't been excited about a new Bad Religion album in a while and thought that the last one was pretty terrible but what I'm hearing off of this new one, due out next week, I'm liking.

The whole thing can be streamed via the band's official youtube channel.

I've only heard one song so far, and just pre-ordered from www.badreligion.com. It was actually cheaper to buy and ship to Canada than amazon was, go figure.

nah, I think you have to order the vinyl package with the BR watch to get that. I just got the CD. I'll ask my ex-wife when hers shows up, though.

I don't get the need for 3 guitars in a punk band.

Mark Tolch

Well, Mr. Brett quit. He left and they got Brian Baker. Then Mr. Brett came back. And he's a songwriter. But you don't just kick Brian Baker out of a band. That's Brian Minor Threat Samhain Dag Nasty Baker. He's the man. And since Brett doesn't like to tour, they have 2 live guitarists, which is perfect.

All kidding aside, they're each such radically different players, stylistically, that they make it work.

Oh, I know the history of why they have three guitarists, I used to be a huge BR fan (but stopped paying any attention after Stranger Than Fiction, for obvious reasons...). But I have little appreciation for Brian Baker (Dag Nasty = damn terrible!). Didn't know Mr. Brett didn't tour. Must be a hard life, playing in a band, running a record company, and making lots of money... :eyebrows:

That whole crack addiction didn't help, I'm sure. :-D

I'm not big on Dag Nasty, but I love me some Minor Threat.

They're playing NYC on 3/23/13 with Against Me! and Polar Bear Club, both of whom I dig.

I think we will go to this show.

Mark Tolch

Yeah, i'll more than likely catch them in Toronto this time around. There was a time when I saw every local Bad Religion show...I think that i saw them about 4 times on the Process of Belief tour.....and it got a little stale. It's been a few years, though.

I haven't seen them since Recipte For Hate!

I haven't seen them since Recipte For Hate!

I'm surprised. I heard they did 3 nights in NYC, one of them was up to Against the No Control, the next night was up to the Gray Race, and the one after that was all of the newer stuff up to Dissent. Third night would've been right up your alley. :-D

Ian Jane

Yeah, that was 2-3 years back and I thought about going but for whatever reason decided against it.

I wish they were selling a non-limited version of the Crossbuster watch. I want one but not enough to drop almost 100 bucks.

Listened to it twice now. First impressions... two weak songs, the other twelve are pretty solid. Probably the best album they've done since Stranger Than Fiction.

Two thumbs up.

Mark Tolch

Poor Mr. Brett...he'll be answering questions about INTO THE UNKNOWN until the day he dies.

CD hasn't arrived, but they were nice enough to send out a high bitrate digital download in the meantime. I've played it, and though nothing really jumps out at me as was the case with their earlier albums, I'm enjoying it.

My only complaint about the album technically, and I hope it's a problem with the digital download, but I find that the vocals are low in the mix, enough that i have to jack the mids up on my eq to compensate. Which is a shame, because the vocals are what I most look forward to in a BR album.

Mark Tolch

Probably the best album they've done since Stranger Than Fiction.

Two thumbs up.

I know we differ on their post STF output, but I really thought that PROCESS OF BELIEF was an amazing comeback album, and the most solid thing they've put out since RECIPE FOR HATE. I do like STF, but it's my least favourite of their "early" stuff.

Ian Jane

Yep, we disagree on a lot of BR stuff - but are united in our hatred for Dissent of Man, so it's all good.

I had no problem with the vocal levels on the CD in my car, for whatever that's worth.

Hopefully that turns out to be the case, and it's not just my hearing that's going....even though I know that it is. :-(

And yeah, DISSENT, except for that opening song (which I quite like) is terrible.

Cool. I'm half-ass looking for tickets for sunday night's show at the Horseshoe....they seem to be on kijiji for about 80-100 bucks a pair, which i don't mind paying. I'd like to see them in such a cool venue.

Good show last night. I was exhausted and grumpy when I got there and so I didn't enjoy it as much as I might have otherwise but the band sounded great. Really an almost perfect set list, they played everything I wanted to hear with maybe a couple of tracks I like off of the new album left off. A solid 90 minutes straight, including the encore. Crowd was definitely into it, bouncers were kind of douchey, and the venue... meh. I'm not such a huge fan of Terminal 5, but what matters is the band and they were very, very good last night.

3 O Come, O Come Emmanuel
4 White Christmas
5 Little Drummer Boy

Mark Tolch

Huh. I have other Christmas songs by them, from the Holiday Sampler that came out in the 90's. Don't know that I'll need another one.

Mark Tolch
12-23-2014, 06:56 PM
Yeah. I had a "Holiday Sampler" by them from the time that the Gray Race came out that had a couple of cool Christmas songs, but I don't need a whole album of songs performed straight-ahead like.

Can they write their own music?

There's nothing wrong with BAD RELIGIONS X-MASS album except it kinda conflicts with their name.
I've been driving around with it in my car all week.

I'm happy that they're putting out a new album, because I really liked True North. But then again, I'm not happy that Brooks Wackerman is gone, and that Greg Hetson is gone. It's nice that Graffin and Bentley are still around, and Brian Baker has definitely done his time with the band, but Wackerman...that's a huge blow.

No Substance is getting a vinyl re-issue: https://www.kingsroadmerch.com/bad-religion/

Going by the comments on the band's FB page regarding this re-release, the album is still as divisive as it was 20 years ago. I'll always stick up for it and I'll go even further and say that if it weren't for "The Hippy Killers" and "In the Same Person" it'd be a flawless album. "Sowing the Seeds of Utopia" is one of my favorite BR songs.

Mark Tolch
05-04-2018, 08:56 AM
I bought the record when it came out, it's a great example of a vinyl mix being way Superior to CD.

I don't mind the Hippy Killers, but I HATE Raise Your Voice. Lot of good tunes on there, my favourite being The Voracious March of Godliness.

I can understand the objections to "Raise Your Voice" with all the repetitive fa fa faing but the verses are quite infectious. To me at least. "The Hippy Killers" to me, despite the awesome title, just goes in one ear and out the other. Same with "In the Same Person".

Mark Tolch

I don't mind the version with what's his name from Toten Hosen trading off lyrics.

Mark Tolch

I think I like a lot of the songs musically, probably more Baker's influence, than lyrically. The lyrics of All Fantastic Images are pretty bad.

MUCH better than that other song that shall not be named, though it is very much a typical BR tune but if it ain't broke... Sounds like it'll be one of the first 3 tracks off the new album. Just has that vibe.

Mark Tolch
10-17-2018, 07:39 PM
It is a lot better than that other piece of shit. That being said, I think that every few albums for me, Bad Religion hits this "going through the motions" thing, and that's what this sounds like. I guess I would compare it to Dissent of Man, in that it's like, Yup, that's Bad Religion, alright!, but Nope, I'm not moved. I'll end up getting it anyway, but meh.
