Wow...What a story THIS one has behind it..

Total nightmare by all accounts....

Directed by Paul Schrader
Written by Brett Easton Ellis
Starring Lindsey Lohan and James Deen (porn star)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPowakhqVVQ

Everyone is pissed at Lohan for being a bitch and unprofessional on set
Ellis is pissed at Schrader for turning his black-comic tale into something else

Schrader is pissed coz SUNDANCE rejected it and everyone is laughing at it!

Is it gonna be SHOWGIRLS level of train wreck????

Did they make it look that shitty on purpose? Holy cow. That looks like it might be the crappiest film for many many years! Also, since James Deen has crossed over to "real film" from porn, is Lindsay Lohan gonna to the opposite?

It was partly funded on one of those KICKSTARTER donation pages....

They wanted to do a "micro budget " film noir kind of deal......I think this boards own DOM D has made a FAR better noir film than this one......

The most shocking thing about this is the talent behind the camera is pretty good....Even GUS VAN SANT is ACTING in the movie!!

James Deen actually has a pretty good knack for comedic acting.

When I saw him at the AVN's a few years back he was running up and down the red carpet with a drink in his hand yelling 'FUCK YEAH, PORNO.'

I'd give this a chance because of Schrader.

Oh well.

Shrader has real talent. He can pull off a micro-budget film if he scrapes the sh it off his shoes.

Let's hope he pulls the coin together and attempts another.

Agreed. I'm not without a reasonable amount of faith in him - he's got enough decent stuff in his list of directorial credits that I'd give this a shot based on his name alone.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sxsw-lindsay-lohans-canyons-rejected-414498) the film was rejected from play at SXSW for quality issues.

"Sources tell THR that SXSW has joined Sundance in rejecting the erotic thriller. A festival insider tells THR that the Bret Easton Ellis-penned, Paul Schrader-directed Canyons — which features tons of nudity, including au naturel shots of Lohan — suffers from significant “quality issues.”

Says a festival insider, “It’s got an ugliness and a deadness to it.” Canyons producer Braxton Pope says the filmmakers are still awaiting official word from the festival."

Says a festival insider, “It’s got an ugliness and a deadness to it.”

That actually piques my interest a little. The trailers make it look like a pissweak send up of trash cinema. Strong words like that from SXSW make you think there must at least be something to it.

Those are exactly the words -- an ugliness and deadness from the inside out -- I use to describe Michael Winterbottom'S THE KILLER INSIDE ME, Julia Leigh's SLEEPING BEAUTY, Oliver Stone's SAVAGES, QT's DJANGO UNCHAINED and Kathryn Bigelow's ZERO DARK THIRTY. Nihilism turning into dry rot, perhaps. Something is happening here.

IndieWire has Schrader's response to the criticsm that The Canyons has received in an article here (http://www.indiewire.com/article/paul_schrader).

It's kind of an interesting read in that he tackles how social media and technology have changed things for him.

Kent Jones seems to like it judging from that article and he's a critic I generally like, he's written great pieces on John Carpenter and Milius' Big Wednesday. I'd certainly take his word over some hipster programmer from SouthbySouthwest.

Seems like the hipsters have been putting the boot into this one before anyone has really seen it properly...The few decent critics who have seen it have somewhat positive view of it!!!

I'm pretty enticed to see this one. Simply the fact that Schrader is involved with this flick catches my attention. Lohan nude is reason enough:biggrin:

Might be decent. Didn't like Paul's last few films like Dominion and Auto Focus.

I'm actually looking forward to this now. It'll be interesting to see if Deen can really act, and if he can't whether his sheer magnetism is enough to carry him through. Not holding out much hope for Lohan but at least in a film like this she'll probably be fascinating in a train-wreck kind of way, rather than just boring.

Paul Schrader should stay off the internet. Social media strangles creativity.

Nevertheless, I want to see this.

Well this was nowhere near as bad as legend has it. Which is not to say that it is actually much good at all because I'm not sure it is. Schraders certainly in fine form. You can feel the thought that's gone into every directorial choice here and the film kind of has a loose 70s art flick feel to it that's damned welcome these days. Though he should have gone for a bit more eroticism... If Lohan's going to get her tits out for you then surelly the least you can do as a director is to try and make it vaguely sexy. Also now I think of it I have no idea what he was doing with all those shots of decaying theatres that start and end the film. I seem to recall Schrader saying something about this film being about the death of Hollywood and cinema or some such but I don't think anyone told Brett Easton Ellis. Which they should have. He was, after all, writing the damned script and could perhaps have touched on those themes at some point- but he doesn't.

Actually all the real problems here are Brett Easton Ellis related. The man has twittered this script in. Usually I find the deliberately banal, shallow dialogue of his character hilarious but here it's just painfully dull and delivered in oddly stony fashion by the actors who clearly don't know quite what to do with these lines. Deens has nowhere near the magnetic prescence he is often alledged to possess while Lohan was fine. The problem with her is that she's nowhere near attractive enough for her character. Everyone keeps talking about how beautiful she is and her suppossed really-really-good-lookingness even leaves some men speechless. Well Lohans an attractive enough girl- when she's not whacked on something ort other- but I don't think she leaves too many men breathless. Nice tits though...

Anyway it all just meanders along humourlessly folloowing ugly characters doing ugly things before wrapping up with a crime that seems to have fuck all motive, is bizarrely staged and that the character gets away with for reasons that make no sense at all. And on that high, incomprehensible note it ends- barring a few empty cinema shots. Hell, in a wierd way I kind of enjoyed it.

This is how most of Ellis's books go. I thought the movie really captured his style. And Schrader did the best AMERICAN GIGOLO-style direction that he could given the cast and the budget. I was pleased with it.

I really don't get eh love for Ellis' work....as was mentioned above his books meander along endlessly following ugly characters doing ugly things before wrapping up with a crime that seems to have fuck all motive, is bizarrely staged and that the character gets away with for reasons that make no sense at all...

I like most of his books. They're generally pretty funny and I like the unapologetic prteñtiousness of them. No laughs here though and the scope of the tale seems deliberately small.

As I said in the "What are you watching" thread:

Paul Shrader + Lindsay Lohan = success? Well no. This is like a high school play version of a Bret Easton Ellis story that somehow has been filmed. I have seen better acting in pornos....

Shrader really tries. But he just cant help it. This just doesnt work. Lohan looks really strung out. Also, Bret Easton Ellis in film just either works, like American Psycho and The Informers or outright sucks, like Less Than Zero. I Think this falls in the latter category.

I feel I came off a bit to harsh Before. The film is not very good. But it does have a few redeaming features. Good Music and somewhat nice photography.

Also, I must confess, even in this trashy worn out state she is in, I would still bang Lindsay Lohan.

I think Lohan destroyed the movie personally. The direction is nothing to write home about and neither is the acting (though James Deen does an overall good job) but the story isn't interesting and Lohan is a horrible actress and draws away any good merits the film has.
