Some of you might find this interesting. 'Benson Hurst' - the man behind the liner notes on the recent Distribpix releases and a pretty well regarded adult film historian, has started a podcast called The Rialto Report.

http://www.therialtoreport.com/#

Some very cool information up there and more to come I'm sure. Figured I'd pass on the link...

I just listened to the George Payne and Jennifer Welles interviews today at work. Wow. Fantastic stuff.

Payne was a really interesting interviewee. Sometimes a bit cagey with his responses, but he offered up plenty of great info overall. I'll have to go back and read the stuff I've read about him in the past and see how they match up with the picture he presented in the interview. Also wonderful to hear his memories of Phil Prince, so at odds with the picture of him one conjures up after watching his films and reading the all the bizarre stories about his history (which I believe mostly trace back to Sleazoid Express).

And Jennifer Welles. Such an engaging actress and presence. Wonderful to hear her discuss her upbringing and look back on her days on the industry with such affection. You always assume that most porn stars who simply disappear do so to escape the industry, usually due to bad experiences, so it was great to hear the story from a different angle.

With so many great performers leaving us (and many well before their time) it's really good to see people capturing their stories and memories while there's still time. Speaking of Phil Prince, I'd love to hear Sharon Mitchell's memories of making 'Taming of Rebecca'. She's certainly done plenty of interviews since she ceased performing, anyone know of an interview where she discusses it?

Good to know. I believe the liner notes of Distribpix's Maraschino Cherry disc mention that she doesn't remember much about making it, but I'd love to hear whatever memories she does have.

We also speak to Steven Morowitz, the owner of Distribpix, the company that has expertly reissued the Henry Paris catalog in recent years, and adult film academic Laura Marks who returns to the Rialto Report to take a deeper look at the film.

I've just been catching up on the latest Rialto Reports, and they're all amazing.

John Lyons should be able to weigh in on this. He's mentioned in the past that he's been working with Damiano Jr. on the restorations, I remember him talking about LET MY PUPPETS COME. I think a few of the major issues revolve around rights as much as elements.

"For four years between 1976-1980, Joyce Baronio took pictures of strippers, porn stars, burlesque dancers, and sex show workers in the Times Square area of New York.

She published a selection of these photographs in 1980 in her award-winning book, “42nd Street Studio”, where striking black and white images of adult film stars like Sharon Mitchell, Joey Silvera, Beth Anna, Serena Czarnecki, Candida Royalle and Vanessa Del Rio rubbed shoulders with pictures of unknown and long forgotten performers.

The Rialto Report met Joyce last week to talk about her work and her memories of working in Times Square.

Very good article but one interesting point is that it appears Roger Colmont, the director of WHITE FIRE was Zebedy Colt. A good but I found it to be a rather depressing film. And Stuart Allen (boyfriend of Leslie Bovee) directed the films THE INITIATION OF CYNTHIA and THE SPERMINATOR. His name is often reversed in the credits (and on IMDB) but it's nice knowing that he was a real person and not an alias for someone else.

"Three years ago, following the closure of AIM (Adult Industry Medical Associates) which she had founded and managed for over a decade, Sharon Mitchell left Los Angeles and the adult film industry in which she had featured so prominently for over 30 years.

How does Sharon remember her early days as a porn star in New York in the 1970s, and on the West Coast in the 1980s. How did she come to form AIM, and what happened to lead to such an abrupt departure from the industry. And what is she doing now?

New episode is online! (http://www.therialtoreport.com/2014/06/08/jerry-butler-young-wild-and-wonderful-podcast-37/)

"2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of Jerry Butler’s autobiography, ‘Raw Talent’.

It was opinionated, frenetic, controversial, and entertaining. Just like Jerry Butler himself. Love it or hate it – and many loved it, and many hated it – ‘Raw Talent’ was a revelation. For the first time, a book by an insider blew the lid off the inner workings of the adult film industry and dished the dirt on its stars.

It was named after Jerry’s best-known film, which told the story of a talented but struggling actor who gets sucked into making porn films, winning the fame he craved, but losing himself along the way. It was almost like porn was imitating real life. Except, here’s the irony: Jerry Butler’s real life was more extraordinary and crazy than anything he played on the big screen.

So what happened to the boy from New York with the raw talent? What’s his place in the golden age of adult film? And how does he look back on that period?

On this episode of The Rialto Report, April Hall speaks to three people who know the Jerry Butler story intimately:

Bill Margold – industry insider, director, actor, historian – remembers the Jerry Butler years well and, as always, provides his own unique insights.

Cathy Tavel wrote ‘Raw Talent’ with Jerry Butler and Robert Rimmer. She remembers what Jerry was like, how she put his life on the page, and the fall-out from the book’s publication.

And finally, Jerry Butler himself – now working as a bus driver back in Brooklyn – looks back at the films, the madness, the people, and how he managed to survive the era."

"On this episode of The Rialto Report, we tell the story of the legendary Marty Hodas – ‘King of the Peeps’ – with his only audio interview since the 1970s.

Marty introduced peep show machines into Times Square – creating the basis for the adult film industry, and changing the face of New York in the process.

His remarkable story is one of sex films, obscenity busts, police harassment, mob heat, Times Square, and millions of dollars. In quarters. Lots and lots of quarters."

Listened to the first half on my commute to work this morning, he's a pretty funny guy, definitely shoots from the hip.
He's really a great raconteur and covers quite a bit of ground. I listened to the entire thing on the road today. Most fascinating for me were the bits about Traci Lords (and his hilariously awkward run-in with her at a con years after the scandal), the AIDS scare, his time with Extreme Associates and the ill-fated Frontline American Porn documentary and XPW. Par for the course with Rialto, essential listening.

Ian Jane
03-14-2017, 11:08 AM
Yeah I wasn't aware of the XPW wrestling stuff at all, so that was interesting to hear about. It's also interesting that he notes the media walk out on the Forced Entry shoot was staged by the TV crew.

Yeah I wasn't aware of the XPW wrestling stuff at all, so that was interesting to hear about. It's also interesting that he notes the media walk out on the Forced Entry shoot was staged by the TV crew.
I was unaware of his involvement with much of that until fairly recently seeing as he mostly stayed behind the scenes as he said. XPW was a fairly controversial organization among wrestling fans back when it was operating. A lot of fans saw them as nothing more than an ECW rip-off (they actually started running shows out of the old ECW area in Philly after ECW folded and many ECW wrestlers did shows with them) and a few members of their roster even caused a disruption at an ECW pay-per-view in 2000. As the name implies, they mainly did the ultraviolent hardcore stuff. One of the more infamous matches was a scaffold match between New Jack and Vic Grimes, with New Jack admitting after the fact that he actually wanted to kill Grimes! I've got a few of their DVD's and have no issue admitting to having a thing for Lizzy Borden back then

If you go back and watch the way the bit on Forced Entry in the Frontline documentary was edited, I think its fairly obvious that the "walk out" was a big sensationalist set up. Very little about the narration could be seen as "objective". Say what you will about the content, and yeah, Black often comes off as an obnoxious asshat, but at least Lizzy came across as fairly level headed when discussing why she shot what she did. Just thinking about that whole issue and the ensuing case still makes my fucking blood boil.

Ian Jane

If an adult film director shoots footage of an actor which he then uses across multiple films, is he obliged to pay that actor multiple times? Constance Money thought so.

The release of Henry Paris’ ‘The Opening of Misty Beethoven’ in 1976 was followed by acrimonious arguments, a four-year legal process, and a staggering multi-million dollar claim for damages brought by Susan Jensen - Constance Money herself.

For the first time, the full behind-the-scenes story is revealed.

"I think I broke my dick." :haha:

Great listening but as always I wish it were longer. The most I'd ever seen him interviewed was in short clips on the See No Evil DVD. Dark's erotic thrillers are some of the best from the golden era. Love the Animal Instincts and Mirror Image films. Body of Influence is also pretty great. Funny to see his music video credits, from the Melvins (had no idea he did that particular video) to fucking Vitamin C. Now that's diversity.

I finished the latest episode on the way home last night and yes, it was pretty interesting. It didn't surprise me much to learn that he has a real affinity for arthouse and surrealist cinema, you can see that peeking into quite a bit of his work. Didn't realize he'd done a Sublime video, hah.

I recently listened to a bunch of these and got caught up with the ones I missed.
Some favorites:
Tom Byron - He Drives Uber nowadays! Tom's episode was funny and endearing.
Greg Dark - Left me with the impression that he was highly intelligent and articulate person, very deep insights into his film making career.
Tina Russell - Tragic story, she was so gorgeous.
Andrea True (2 parter) - Part one was great insight on the making of her Disco albums and singing career, 2nd part was a interview with her before she died.
Story of Midnight Blue - Al Goldstein was one of kind, great episode about the show's history.
Helga Sven - Surprised they found her, The whole story about falling in love with the superfan was quite unusual, but sweet.
Billy Dee - That story about the girl who stank and Billy Dee still finished having sex with her left me in tears from laughing so hard, in fact this whole episode was hilarious. He lead a interesting life.
Uschi Digard - Surprised they found her as well, she also sounded like a sweet old lady
Sharon Mitchell - Always great to hear from her about the early days
Whatever happened to Candy Samples - She sounded like such a sweet old lady. She has a infectious laugh and I found myself laughing along with her as she tried to remember things from her past.
Eric Edwards - One of porn's greatest actors. Sad to hear he was suffering from cancer at the time of the interview.

I do think the Rialto Report is the best podcast out there right now. Looking forward to many more episodes from them.

If one is pulled it's usually because someone claimed they were libeled (not likely in this case) or a copyright violation (probably in this case, they seem to have funny views on copyright).

I get that. It was just curious as this is 30+ year old footage. I have no idea of it's provenance, but it seems that a reasonable guess might be B roll from something like Midnight Blue?

See, thats kinda why I wanted to see it, other than the obvious attraction of period cinema verite of Sue Nero! It's always fun, to me, to try and figure out where footage like this comes from.

Que sera sera.

Finished the latest one on the way into work this morning. It's way more focused on the rock n roll side of the story than the adult film side of the story, in fact it doesn't go into a whole lot of detail there maybe because most of what he was doing was SOV gonzo style stuff rather than feature based, but it's still a typically interesting episode and anyone who has enjoyed previous installments should enjoy this one.

I really enjoyed this one as I pretty much devour anything music related from that period. What a amazing life Neville had, the circles he traveled in and how it all tied into his porno career was brilliant. Well recommended along with the Andrea True one if you like a little music history thrown in with your porn history.

The interview is interesting on a couple of levels. Completely forgotten is the Spinelli film REEL PEOPLE. That was the first film that mixed pros and amateurs. I always felt the Burt Reynolds character in BOOGIE NIGHTS was more modeled on Spinelli then anyone else (and Spinelli did hate the demise of the feature films). Also, Gillis hated the films with scripts and wanted to go the gonzo route; and I think most people here would agree that it was terrible for the adult industry when it went that route (not money-wise of course).
