So some band I've never heard of called Kodaline were recording in Ireland and The Pixies were next door in the studio working on stuff.

Should we assume this means that there will be a new album soon? 1991 was a long time ago.

Their 2004 post reunion song "Bam Thwok" was okay, but Kim and Frank have done some good work post Pixies so this could be decent if true. At any rate I am sure it will be better than the upcoming Iggy and the Stooges album. :eyebrows:

Haha, you're probably right. I've dug enough of Frank's solo stuff to be willing to at least partially get my hopes up for this. And they still sound great live.

Lets hope their QUALITY CONTROL switch is still working!!!

Huh. I wonder if this will affect the new album that may or may not actually be happening?

"We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering"

I don't see Kim leaving as a serious blow to the Pixies, since outside of a handful of songs her part in the band can be filled by just about any novice bass player.

They should just hire Kelley in her place.

LOL...HARSH!!!

To be fair the simple bass lines were at least partly a stylistic choice. The musician ad Kim responded to specifically said "no chops".

She also did a lot of the harmonies and help out on vocals too. That part will be harder to replace.

I recently stumbled upon the demos for The Breeders' POD album which include Kim's demo for "Silver". I like her demo version MUCH better than the Pixies version.

I'm gonna give that another spin from home later where I can turn it up louder but first impressions.... that's kinda rad.

Weird video. Now I want to take a Fruit loops bath and then go make a big mess.

It appears they switched one Kim for another, since the line up announced for the new dates has Kim Shattuck from The Muffs on bass.

My second impression on the new song is that it's not as rad as I first thought.

Also, Kim Shattuck is probably a good choice.

There's a fairly lukewarm review for the new EP here (http://www.punknews.org/review/12165/pixies-ep1).

I forgot this came out and still haven't listened to it.

She she is. Sorry Ms. Paz.

MonkeyBeat
12-11-2013, 12:37 AM
I found it interesting how in their official announcement of Paz joining the upcoming tour, they specifically noted "The band - Black Francis/vocals, guitar, Joey Santiago/guitar, backing vocals, and David Lovering/drums, backing vocals". Also quoting David Lovering with “Working with different bass players is very new for the band, but we’re having a great time doing it.”
I get the feeling that they realize that they kind of strung Kim Shattuck and the fans along into thinking she was a full member of the band.

MonkeyBeat
12-12-2013, 10:29 AM
It appears that I was wrong, and Shattuck was actually "kicked out of the band", not just hired for only the shows she did.

And now Black Francis (sorta) speaks on the firing. (http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/pixies-black-francis-bassist-kim-shattuck-departure-ain-230100264.html)

maybe it's a good thing that he doesn't do too many interviews, because he comes off like a douche.

Ian Jane

he comes off like a douche.

Yep, in pretty much every interview I've ever heard/seen/read that's pretty much consistently the case.

I dunno, he didn't come off as a douche to me in the interview. Brutally honest, perhaps, but he didn't get to specific about things. Sounds like he'd prefer to keep reasons private, so I can't blame him for that. But, whatever, really. :D

As is USUALLY the case, singers / musicians should mostly let their music do the talking rather than spoiling everything by speaking freely about things....

1. Blue-Eyed Hexe
2. Magdalena
3. Greens and Blues
4. Snakes

The chorus of Blue Eyed Hexe sounds like 80's hair metal.

Not impressed.
I would think that Kim Deal is laughing somewhere after listening to this.
This song almost makes Black Flag's "What" sound a bit better.
Almost.

I didn't mind it. Sounds more like early Pixies to me. Then again, the last album was so schizophrenic that it didn't know if it wanted to be a Pixies record or a Frank Black one, so I guess it could take any direction. Even if it sucks, I think they're a great live band so any opportunity to tour is great. Haven't seen them yet without Kim Deal though.

I like the new album, it has more Joey Santiago on it, and now the female vocals are back they sound more like the Pixies. It's nowhere near as good as the first three albums, but it's still pretty good to my ears and more cohesive than the last one (which did have a few good songs on it).

I always thought the PIXIES came too late to the scene.
They sounded like a throwback to the mid 70's to early 80's bands.
Bands like Chrome and Pere Ubu

I only bought SURFER and DOOLITTLE but they never clicked with me.
I gave both about five spins.

I like the Pixies, but I've always found The Breeders to be superior and the one album Kim did under The Amps moniker is amazing (and is pretty much a Breeders album as far as I'm concerned).

Uh, I don't hear Chrome at all. Pere Ubu, sure.

Yeah, it's solid.

I've listened to the new album a couple of times and it sounds like an okay Frank Black record. But it's way better than Indie Cindy.

I'm not saying these bands sound the same...cause' they don't.
All three are unique.
It's just that The Pixies weren't pioneers like the other two and I had moved onto bands like Meat Puppets, Husker Du and The Minutemen by mid eighties.
At that time I rejected synths.

The Pixies mastered the loud-quiet-loud thing while being catchy as hell.

Husker Du were great (except for their last album). Meat Puppets and Minutemen never did a thing for me.

Synths rule. When in the right hands.

I think it's a good record but not as good as the first three. Sounds more like Frank Black doing things by himself, but that could just be hindsight.

I know NIRVANA (and every other band in the 90's) took the dynamic thing from the PIXIES.

And I also love synths but at that time I moved on from bands like JAPAN and early ULTRAVOX to the bands like I listed.
I was also heavily into industrial in the late 70's.
But when The MATS Hootenanny/Let It Be and GUN CLUB'S Fire Of Love came out it had me rejecting synths at that time
It didn't help that every bloody group on the radio was a crappy synth-pop band at the time.

At least I collected two PIXIES albums.
I rejected SKINNY PUPPY, BIG BLACK and JESUS LIZARD for the same reason.

I used to think the problem with Frank Black was sheer volume of output and a lack of quality control. But now he only does an album every few years and the results are still very patchy...
