The latest 'rumor mill' column over at The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/the-rumor-mill/true-lies-abyss-2014-x-files-twin-peaks) says:

"Finally, while we’re talking CBS… we’ve had additional confirmation that the company is working to being more catalog TV series to Blu-ray, following the success of Star Trek: The Original Series and The Next Generation, including David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. More on that in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned…"

Hmmmm...be interesting to see what the presentation is going to be, as far as AR. The DVDs in the gold box are fine for me...I don't really feel like buying that series AGAIN.

More from The Digital Bits. (http://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/072213_0010)

"work on Twin Peaks: The Complete Series on Blu-ray is also well under way at CBS, with a release expected in time for the end of the year or early next. Multiple sources tell us that a deal has been made to allow the inclusion of David Lynch’s Fire Walk with Me film in the package, so fan will at long last be treated to a truly complete set."

Cool. Think I'll be staying with my DVD's of this, though. How much better can this series look?

Mark Tolch
07-22-2013, 05:12 PM
It was shot on video, right? That red tinge has been on both releases VHS/DVD, although it was slightly better on the DVD release. I hope for potential buyers that they don't crop it for 1.78:1 or something.

I just hope it's blu: The Series, and no more of this Season1 and Season 2 bs.

The DVD's were heavy on the extras, tho. It'll be interesting to see what is retained, and what new, if any, extras will be in the blu set.

As far as I know TWIN PEAKS was shot on film, though it was edited on video as was standard at the time. I believe I read somewhere that the process of going back to the film elements was actually done for the gold box, if that's the case it'll probably just be a matter of doing a new scan.

Twin Peaks was shot on film. The show is available in HD on US Netflix and looks very impressive.

Mark Tolch
08-12-2013, 08:48 AM
Hm. Didn't realize that the goldbox was transferred from film elements, it still looked soft to me. Did they crop it for US Netflix?

Ignatius
08-12-2013, 09:40 AM
To a certain extent the softness may be deliberate. I can imagine Lynch and Frost going for a soft, gauzy, soap opera kind of look. Hopefully Lynch will somehow be involved with the release so it comes out looking the way it should.

Some interesting speculation here (http://welcometotwinpeaks.com/news/twin-peaks-blu-ray/) that the Blu-ray set will be coming in March 2014.

Hmmm. So according to a post here (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=219694&page=12) there was a link on amazon.fr (now gone) that listed a March 2014 release and stated that it was a ten disc set.

Amazon.co.uk now has a March 2014 release date online. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Twin-Peaks-Collection-Kyle-MacLachlan/dp/B00H9BFV98?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1386845510&sr=1-78&tag=bluraycom-21)

Confirmed Lynch is shooting new Twin Peaks material, speculation is that it's for the upcoming Blu-ray set.

"Yeah, we [shot the promo for the Blu-ray] two days ago. It’s been done. I don’t know if I was supposed to leak that to anybody, but yeah, we did it and I’m not at liberty to say what was done. I can say that it’s going to be a big surprise."

Ray Wise said that. (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/01/12/twin-peaks-blu-ray-promo-will-be-a-big-surprise-ray-wise-says-he-makes-an-appearance/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter)

"Rumours are just that. Rumours are rumours. There’s always been rumours about things and there’s no real truth to it. I don’t where these rumours come from, but I think they were based on some misunderstandings of what’s going on.

It’s true that there will be a new Blu-ray of Twin Peaks, of the pilot, the first season, the second season. And there will be some special things on that Blu-ray that haven’t been seen before. That’s about all I can say."

David Lynch said that. (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/01/21/david-lynch-sets-the-record-straight-on-the-new-twin-peaks-blu-rays-and-new-special-things/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter)

HOT DAMN!

It's coming 7/29/14.

From EW.com: (http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/05/15/twin-peaks-blu-ray-box-set/)

"If Leland Palmer were still around, he’d be dancing like a crazy person right now. There’s a new Twin Peaks box set coming out July 29, and it includes nearly 90 minutes of never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes from the prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

This is the footage that fans created a Facebook petition for back in 2011, and now they’ll get their wish, thanks to a box set that was personally supervised by Twin Peaks mastermind David Lynch.

“During the last days in the life of Laura Palmer many things happened, which have never been seen before,” Lynch said in a statement. “They’re here now alongside the new transfer of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Twin Peaks, the television series.”"

You can watch a teaser video at the link above.

First review...

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-ray_reviews_62_/twin_peaks_blu-ray.htm

"AUDIO: Both have a DTS English track. But the sound on Jacques Renault' bar scene is still far to low, and not subtitled on the PAL edition (if French subs are not displayed). The NTSC does offer an additional 2.0 track for the original English."

Are they talking about the music or the dialogue here? The way the scene is supposed to be presented is with the music overpowering the dialogue in the mix. Hence the need for subtitles. So if the dialogue is "too low" then the sound mix is correct.

Mark Tolch
07-24-2014, 07:46 AM
Good eye, Roderick. Or ear, rather.

I'm totally sold on this. I have the gold box, and it looks like this new set has most of the extras...I do have to say, the SNL skits are friggin' hilarious and it's a shame they're not included here.

I'm happy that it's region free, but as some of the extras don't seem to be HD, is it safe to assume that the UK version would have the SD extras in PAL?

Mark Tolch
07-24-2014, 03:42 PM
Piss on it, I preordered from amazon.co.uk. If I don't get dinged by customs, which I've never had happen from the UK, and if the exchange doesn't fluctuate too much over the next few days when my credit card gets hit, the cost was under 85 bucks. Too good to pass up for that much stuff.

Ian Jane

So there are rumors going around that the English audio on Fire Walk With Me has some synch problems. Anyone watch it yet?

Mark Tolch
07-31-2014, 09:48 AM
It's on the FWWM extras, The Missing Pieces (According to reports). Some have noticed it, some haven't, others have offered the suggestion that if you play it at 24fps forced, it's noticeable, but if your player (like the PS3) allows you to set it to automatic, or off, you won't notice it.

The other interesting thing is that some of the materials for the FX sequences were lost, so a few of the sequences are presented as SD upscaled.

Don't care. My set is on the way. I think that I'm going to rip the coffee commercials and SNL appearances off of the gold box onto a DVD-R so I'll have everything.

I'm working the set in order and am only on disc two, but so far no complaints here.

Mark Tolch
07-31-2014, 11:27 AM
People are complaining about the price (Even at 90 dollars, it's STEEP!) and I'm like "Whaaaatttttt?"

I paid 25 dollars for FWWM on VHS.
I paid 60 dollars for Season 1 and 2 on VHS.
I paid 10 dollars for the US Pilot on VHS.
I paid 20 some-odd dollars for FWWM on DVD.
I paid 75 dollars for the Gold Box with Seasons 1 and 2 and the pilot(s).

For less than half of that total, I'm getting EVERYTHING on blu-ray. In a world where some TV seasons go for 50 bucks on blu, to get 2 seasons (even if the first one is short), all of those extras (and apparently the discs are loaded with Easter Eggs), the film, and those motherfuckin DELETED SCENES from FWWM....score.

BTW, the amazon UK set, even after exchange and shipping, worked out to be 84 dollars, which means that it would've had to cost me about 75 dollars CAD to be equal.

As usual, amazon UK smokes amazon.ca for delivery speed, haha. My set arrived today. My system is set up for anywhere between 90 and 100 ms audio delay, which I find is pretty swell across the board. With that setting on, I noticed no delay whatsoever in the deleted scenes from Fire Walk With Me.

DAMN, there is a lot of stuff in this set. I started with the FWWM deleted scenes, then watched the film....it looks and sounds great, and the deleted scenes (90 minutes worth) are fantastic.

As mentioned, I got this from amazon.co.uk, which after exchange and shipping, worked out to 84 dollars CAD, or about 78 bucks US. Here, it would've been 119 plus our lovely 13 percent tax, almost 140 bucks. I'm happy with that decision. The only packaging difference seems to be that the discs themselves have the UK rating logos on them. The packaging is complex, and a pain in the ass, but it looks beautiful.

I've so far had no issues playing any of the SD content on the set, so it's PAL free. If you don't mind those UK stamps on the discs, this is a great way to get the set for much cheaper than up this way.

08-15-2014, 01:21 PM
Yeah I checked that ep. 9, it's slightly off in sections, but not consistently. And I'm not sure that I would have even noticed if someone didn't mention it. The transfer looks fantastic. I did notice that some of the montage sequences with lots of dissolves have much lower resolution because they were originally edited on video, instead a film optical printer process. A few of the effect shots are that way as well, because they are video generated. It's not too often that it happens, though, and it just has to do with the source material.

Mark Tolch
08-15-2014, 02:50 PM

Got our set yesterday, neat packaging. I won't lie, it kinda freaked me out a little bit when I found the 'fire walk with me note' at the bottom.

Awesome, glad that you got it. Settle yourself in for those FWWM extras and one beautiful looking film. That alone (for me, anyway) was worth the cost of the set.

Yeah, I'm stoked to revisit the series in HD. Won't have time to sit down with it until after I get back from Vegas next month, but once I do, I figure it's time to redo the entire series from start to finish.

Hasn't it been confirmed Showtime will be airing a third season of Twin Peaks in 2016 or so? Or has being awake for 34 hours fucked with my memory.

I'm excited that Cooper is back. Hubub around the show, and by that i mean rumors, was that Lara Flynn Boyle got bitchy about Coop's relationship with Audrey and his relationship with Lynch was not so good after.

Preaching to the choir here but we started into the set last night. The pilot looks and sounds fantastic. Very happy with the quality so far and can't wait to get further into the series.

I haven't watched the entire thing in order since college, and that was a long time ago full of fuzzy memories at best but it was surprising to me just how many odd little touches I remembered from the pilot alone. It got me thinking about what a cultural phenomena the series really was when it first hit.

It's funny. I, on the other hand, remember so much. I can't remember the name of what we watched the day before most of the time or remotely what happened in it, but Twin Peaks, I remember everything it seems. This show was on at such a depressingly alone time in my life that it meant the world to me.

I wonder if Sherilyn Fenn will be back. I seem to recall her declaring Lynch a misogynist and that's why she wasn't in Fire Walk With Me. Then of course she turned around and did Boxing Helena. Probably she's an unusual woman.

Her career hasn't exactly exploded since Twin Peaks/Boxing Helena/Two Moon Junction, so it wouldn't surprise me if she comes back.

So we did the pilot on Tues. and then episodes 1 and 2 last night. The way episode 2 ends is just so out there. That whole red room/midget dance thing. No matter how many times I see it, it still seems to unexpected... even when I know it's coming.

Eight episodes through now, still having a blast revisiting every second of this series.

Leland's hair is now all white, David Patrick Kelly is dancing, Audrey is trying really hard not to get fucked by her dad and Bob is screaming.

I kinda understand now why my mom refused to let me watch this first run when my younger sister was around.

Some random observations.

-Things go down hill very quickly once you get 1/3 of the way through the 2nd season. What seemed funny the first and second time I went through the series now seems almost juvenile at times. It still has great moments but wow what a drop in quality.

-I forgot that Heather Graham pops up in this towards the end.

-Ferrar is awesome every time he appears on screen.

-Jack Nance makes every episode worth watching even when it's bad.

-They overuse the music big time in S2.

-Kyle MacLachlan has a weird chin.

I have a coworker into quirky weird TV shows and was talking to her about it the other day. You'd think she'd be all over this, but nope. Couldn't get into it either. Maybe the first season, which I feel is vastly superior, is just too Lynchy for some people?

In my wife's case, I don't think she thought it was too weird. We have a painting from a scene in Blue Velvet hanging in our bedroom. I just think she thought Twin Peaks was too slow, and too much of a time commitment. With a movie she only has to spend 90 minutes to 2 hours in Lynch's world.

I rarely get into television shows. Most feel drawn out and I lose interest. I also like to know that there will be a decent ending if I'm going to commit a substantial amount of time. The way some shows get canceled abruptly often comprises the overall story. All that said, I discovered David Lynch a couple years back and decided to check out Twin Peaks. I've enjoyed the first six episodes but I am starting to lose interest. Seems like there are too many threads being layered in and a ton of characters still being introduced. I could see sticking with it if I knew there is a proper ending or resolution coming. Without spoiling could you tell if the original series wraps up well or does it just peter out. TIA

That's genuinely tough to do, ha. S2 sort of wraps things up but it's also very weak compared to S1. S3 is on it's entirely own completely different level. And you have to factor the Secret History book into things too. And if you haven't seen Fire Walk With Me, nothing will make sense. I'd say if you like Lynch, stick it out.

S1 = classic
S2 = meh
Fire Walk With Me = classic
S3 = holy shit

The basic premise of "Who Killed Laura Palmer" get's resolved somewhere in the middle (?) of season 2. After that the show meanders until the end of that season and ends on a giant (but awesome) cliffhanger. IMO, they should have ended it there. That was the initial story and after that you can tell they had no plans or direction for where it should. FWWM is great but tonally completely different than the series.

I was not a fan of Season 3.

Mark Tolch
01-12-2018, 09:24 PM
I don't recommend it until you've seen the show and Fire Walk With Me, but there's a fanedit out there called Northwest Passage that only deals with the Laura Palmer story ac. I love Twin Peaks, but it's quite the curio to see

S2 = meh
For the most part, I think the general consensus agrees. However, 4 of S2's 22 episodes were directed by Lynch, and they are all classics; diamonds in the rough if you please. And I still maintain that his season finale here ranks right up there with his very best stuff. Just sayin': don't write off the entire season as a loss, that's all.

S3 = holy shit
Complete agreement here. Light years ahead of his contemporaries, just like his 90's era Twin Peaks work was way ahead of its time.

I think the pilot, FWWM, and Season 3 are all incredible. As for the original series, all the Lynch episodes are good but I can't say the same for the other directors. The first season is definitely better than the second, but even then when Lynch isn't directing it's a big step down. Of the episodes he didn't do, only the one with Laura's funeral holds up really well.

Apprehension. Huge.

Same. The beauty of season 3 was the fact that Lynch hadn't directed anything since INLAND EMPIRE, so that was 11 years worth of ideas. You wouldn't want to rush him into something that he hasn't had sufficient time to work out.

Agreed. I also felt that the ending of The Return, even though it caused a huge amount of confusion, was a great close to the show. I'd like to see Lynch tackle something similar (strange goings on in a normal looking town ARE his forte) with maybe a bit of crossover, but I'm afraid that a followup will end up being like Twin Peaks Season 2.
