Dark Horse is going to start re-releasing LONE WOLF AND CUB in massive 700+ page omnibuses Volume One (http://www.darkhorse.com/Books/23-072/Lone-Wolf-and-Cub-Omnibus-Volume-1-TPB) collects Books 1 and 2 and some of Book 3, Volume Two (http://www.darkhorse.com/Books/23-073/Lone-Wolf-and-Cub-Omnibus-Volume-2-TPB) collects the rest of Book 3 and all of Books 4 and 5. These will be slightly larger than the initial releases (5x7 instead of the original 4x6.)

Dark Horse is also finally going to release NEW LONE WOLF AND CUB (no word on when the first volume will be release.)

Been waiting forever for DH to come out with Shin LW&C & it's the same song and dance every time about licensing issues -- I'll believe it when I see it.

You are right about that. They originally announced it like 7 years ago and I debated with myself about even mentioning it since it doesn't have a release date.

Would love to get my hands on these..

but like others have said, how long have they been announcing them?

I'm down for some omnibus sets. I never got into the smaller format versions - too many tiny books to store. Give me some big, fat collections and I'm happy.

Even as omnibuses, it is going to take 11 or 12 books to collect the the series.

I have the entire series already, and would love to upgrade to a better presentation. However, these new editions are only slightly bigger so I'm on the fence about this. I love the series though and also might end up supporting the new reprint in hopes that it will help the sequel series finally get published in the US.

The only omnibus collection that I have is Takehiko Inoue's ongoing VAGABOND Viz Big series and they are quite nice but since this LW&C reprint is only going to be slightly larger -- I fail to see the point.

I imagine that they are going to discontinue the original books and use these to help publicize/sell the NEW LONE WOLF AND CUB books.

About the size, I was reading a post on another forum (http://marvelmasterworksfansite.yuku.com/reply/632952/Lone-Wolf-And-Cub-omnibus#reply-632952) from someone that worked on Dark Horse's original LW&C books and they said that they scanned the Japanese books for their release, so unless they get access to better materials, it is unlikely that they'll be able to release it any larger.

I'd rather that than 10-20x that amount in smaller books that don't fit on my shelves as nicely.

Roderick

That's what comic boxes are for.

Ian Jane
05-14-2013, 09:34 AM
But the DH series isn't in comic size. They're short and stout.

Roderick
05-14-2013, 09:48 AM
And that means they stack perfectly in a comic box. That's what I did with mine.

Derrick King
05-14-2013, 11:31 AM
That is understandable. If I were any good at woodworking I'd make myself a couple of shelves for the LW&C and Samurai Executioner books, because they do not fit in with my other books.

Roderick

Actually, they make manga sized short boxes.

yeah, I also have LW&C, Samurai Executioner & Path of the Assassin complete series and they fit and display perfectly on a compact disc/DVD media storage rack that I bought for cheap during Tower Records going out of business sale.

I have the first volume, but I need to pick up the rest of Path of the Assassin. A couple of years ago I went on a Kazuo Koike spree and bought and read Dark Horse's releases of Samurai Executioner, Color of Rage, Crying Freeman, and Lady Snowblood and burned myself out.

47lab

I never picked up the DH reprints of Crying Freeman but I do have the Viz versions lying around somewhere. I embarked on a Koike spree myself a few years back and picked up everything I could find in English but I've yet to complete Wounded Man.

Like I mentioned, I actually prefer the small format size of the 26 volume version of LW&C. It looks really nice on the shelf together with the similarly sized Samurai Executioner & POTA. I just can't see shelling out more money to acquire it again in the omnibus version just to cut the number of volumes roughly in half.

Derrick King

I never even bothered to think about picking up Wounded Man. Is it even in print?

I really wish someone would release the Hanzo the Razor stories.

Nope, I think it's been out of print for several years now. I know I would shed tears if it was ever announced that Hanzo the Razor would make it to these shores in a full English edition.

I have to admit that Color of Rage is one of Koike's weaker works but for some strange reason, I want to see it adapted into a live action film. I can already picture Djimon Hounsou & Takeshi Kaneshiro playing King & George respectively. :funny: I think Michael Duncan Clarke would've been perfect for the role of King if he were still alive.

Derrick King

I agree 1000% about Color of Rage. It would have been a classic 1970s movie, but they don't make them like that anymore.

47lab
05-17-2013, 10:40 PM
yeah, that manga was prime 70s exploitation flick material. If it had been actually made into a film in the 70s then the two names that pop in my head for the lead roles are Jim Brown or Ken Norton & Sonny Chiba or Hiroyuki Sanada.

I checked out the first LW&C omni today and I think I will pass on "upgrading". The slightly bigger size is nice, but the book doesn't feel too durable. If it had a beefier spine and french flaps I might go for it, but as is I will pass. But if you haven't read or completed the series I say get these for sure.

Ian Jane

That's disappointing to read. I have a serious aversion to weak spines (that sounds weird). If I'm buying an omnibus I want it to last (Marvel did them right).

Is the omnibus in the Japanese right-to-left format, or is it flipped like the original Dark Horse books?

Disappointing to read about the weak spines on these things.....One of the worst crimes when producing books is spines that dont hold up well....

I forgot to look for that, but I'm pretty sure it was still flipped to read Western style.

47lab

yeah, it reads the same as the original Dark Horse books - flipped for western readers.

So looks like Dark Horse is gonna release Shin LW&C sometime next year according to this tweet (https://twitter.com/debaoki/status/353573517989650432/photo/1) from Anime Expo 2013 & they have also confirmed that Kazuo Koike will be their special guest at SDCC too. I'm not sure if I can make it but my bro-in-law goes every year, so I'll have to ask him to get KK's autograph on my promo hardcover edition of LW&C for me.

I think my bro in law will be baffled too since I hardly ever talk to the guy and just asked him out of the blue to get KK's autograph for me. He didn't even know who Kazuo Koike was until I told him. I told him look for the older Japanese guy with the shades at the Dark Horse booth.

I felt the same way when you posted that pic of you & Tatsuya Nakadai getting chummy at some fan signing. He's one of my top 5 favorite actors of all time and I would absolutely relish the opportunity to meet the man, let alone get my pic taken with him.

Samurai Executioner was pretty boss. I'd be up for that, never read POTA.

Ah man, this one stings a bit. LW&C was HUGE to me when First Comics originally started publishing it in the 80's. Bought it for the Frank Miller covers but fell in love with it immediately. Crying Freeman, Lady Snowblood and Samurai Executioner were all really good too.

RIP.

Sad that Japan has lost two titans of the industry within a month with the loss of Monkey Punch earlier in April. I know it's a pipe dream but hope some English manga publisher has the balls to put out Koike's Starving Man. I can't recall if it was Macias or Gustav Horn but when they first described that manga, I said holy shit I have to get my hands on it. Alas, I've been waiting in vain for all these years. I recall Koike said in an interview that the audience for such a manga has long passed and it certainly doesn't conform to today's current societal and political climate.
