OK, been on a semi-consistent Shaw Bros. kick over the last few months and figured a thread was in order just to sort of jot down some points as I make my way through whatever discs land at the door.

Last night?

Virgins Of The 7 Seas, aka The Bod Squad.

A full review is in the works but for the sake of breivity, this one is a blast. 5 women, only three of whom are virgins, are kidnapped by Chinese pirates and sold into white slavery. Thankfully a pretty Chinese lady and her brother (who looks like Wang Yu from One Armed Swordsman, only with both arms) are on hand to help them out. After the obligatory training sequence, the girls are ready to fit and proceed to run around with their boobs out spitting olive pits into the faces and asses of would be rapists, some of whom are dressed like ninjas.

Co-directed by Ernst Hofbrauer of the Schoolgirl Report movies and Kuei Chih-Hung of Bamboo House Of Dolls, this is a trash film of the highest order.

This movie also includes:
-ass smothering
-ass through the wall acrobatics
-bizarre training in the ways of the Chinese sexual arts
-lots of sideburns
-random oceanside frolicing in the nude
-Morricone esque soundtrack

And more!

Good stuff.

I watched Mercenaries from Hong Kong the other day. It's an early Wong Jing flick, and thereby isn't bad (but I like Wong Jing, so saying that was moot). Ti Lung, Michael Chan, Nat Chan, Wong Yue and Johnny Wang team up to sneak into Cambodia to catch a crim (Phillip Ko) who's double-crossed billionairess Candice Yu. It's okay, but it's obvious it's been done on a budget -- but there's action, blood and some boobs, so it's modest B-movie filler. More on the website in a couple of days! :)

Bastard Swordsman - fairly typical one school vs. another school storyline with all the backstabbing and betrayal's you would expect made interesting and completely watchable thanks to some really good action direction, colorful characters, and strong fight choreography. Not the best Shaw swordplay film I've seen but a fine addition nevertheless.

Here you go, read some Shaw reviews! :)

I'll get on to doing more once I've figured out Windows 7 :p

I've seen a ton of Shaw stuff but it makes me sad that a lot of it blends together in my head and if asked what my favorite Shaw films are I'd have a hard time coming up with titles.

I feel like such a phony. :(

I feel like such a phony. :(

Don't feel phony! It could be worse -- you could have just restarted your own Hong Kong movie review blog and, having stepped away from the industry for over two years, realised that you're going to have do a TON of research to catch back up as well as put in some extra hard yards to make your work stand out from the rest (like it used to). :o

You can do it! :peewee:

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Alison. Much appreciated! ^_^

Anyway...here's a bit of interesting trivia that I noticed whilst watching Warriors Two (a Golden Harvest production) that will become seriously annoying to Ian and all you old-school kung fu fans once I have imparted it, as you won't be able to avoid seeing it...

Bryan Leung, or Leung Kar Yan/Liang Jia Ren (as he's often creditted, but "Bryan Leung" is what's on his business card), who played Leung Jan in WT, as well as countless martial arts characters in the Shaw films, was interviewed many years back for Toby Russell's Top Fighter doco. Therein, he openly stated that he was not a martial artist or indeed had ever learned any martial arts -- his best respected ability in the industry was being able to mimic exactly what the martial arts choreographers taught him on set for his parts.

This holds out as, while I was watching Warriors Two, in the majority of fight scenes involving Bryan you can see him counting out the moves! If anyone has any doubts, watch a film with Bryan in it -- though the soundtrack usually fetaures the usual post-dubbed kung fu war-cries while he's fighting, you can actually see his mouth movements match him counting out each step... ;)

Which reminds me, as this is a Shaw thread, Shaw Blu-rays start releasing in Hong Kong on February 1st! First releases are two classic Huangmei Operas, The Kingdom and the Beauty and all-time classic The Love Eterne...

Kingdom: http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_details.php?ProductID=11560

Love Eterne: http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_details.php?ProductID=11559

I can vouch for both, but I am a more general Hong Kong movie buff, so my word might have to be taken with a pinch of salt for all you non-traditional musical fans. I would have upgraded both of these in a heartbeat, if it weren't for the fact they're advertised as Region A locked -- which puts little old Region B me out of the picture. *Sniff* :(

Ian Jane

Interesting about Leung. And you know, as much as I can appreciate the beauty and talent behind some of the operatic stuff, I just can't get into it. I was flipping through the massive Shaw Moviepedia thing I snagged at CES which catalogues something like 600 releases and some of the operatic stuff was in there - I can see why it would appeal to some. I'm just not one of them. It's not an aversion to musicals either, as my love for Fiddler on the Roof knows no bounds.

Mike T
01-23-2011, 11:34 AM
Huangmei Operas, or other popular musicals, from the Shaws are an acquired taste -- that few Western folk gel with.
But mind you, if I ever put one on at home here my wife (who is Chinese) complains no end...as she hates them! Haha!

Alison Jane
01-23-2011, 11:39 AM
There are Shaw musicals??

Mike T
01-23-2011, 11:47 AM
Yep! Chinese operas...and regular musicals, as well as teen-oriented pop musicals!
They're all a lot of fun, esp. the teen musicals from the sixties! :thomason:

Ooh...I love that smiley! That has cheered me up no end! :)

I can get The Love Eterne on BD now. :)

I dream of a day when Vengeance gets a Blu-ray release. Out of all the films I saw at a theatrical retrospective a few years back that was the one that really stuck with me (even more so than One Armed Swordsman, which I count as a favorite SB).

Ian Jane
01-25-2011, 09:48 AM
OK, I don't actually dream of that day, but it would be rad.

Mike T
01-25-2011, 12:05 PM
Sadly, I never got to see Vengeance...or Golden Swallow, for that matter. They were the two that I really wanted to see that eluded me -- by going OOP before I could snap them up. Fingers crossed for a Blu-ray on both (tbh, I already know that Golden Swallow is on its way, as it was re-submitted to the HK censor board for re-classification late last year). ;)

Ian Jane

I haven't seen Golden Swallow either, but Vengeance ranks in my top 5.

Interesting fact: I've just been going through a handful of my Shaw discs from Hong Kong and you'll never guess what?
The Dolby Digital audio on some of the ones that have been remixed, is actually Dolby EX! So, they're 6.1 remixes, not 5.1.
I might have a look through all the discs with remixed soundtracks and see what's 6.1 and what isn't.
This would certainly explain a lot (in relation to the diehards, without surround systems, whinging about the "cluttered" audio).
Jeez it was good upgrading the PC! I'm learning lots of stuff about my DVD collection I never knew before. :)
Btw, my Yamaha amp in the living room is only 5.1 (hence why I want to upgrade it, and also hence why I never noticed this before).
I might post a list of all the Shaw titles released by IVL in Hong Kong that have DD-EX sound, when I'm done. :thomason:

PS: The soundtracks on the new Shaw BDs will DTS-Master Audio.

Mike T
01-27-2011, 03:43 AM
For Shaw Brothers titles that were released with Dolby EX 6.1 soundtracks by IVL on HK R3 DVD, see this thread:

http://www.rockshockpop.com/forums/showthread.php?879-Incorrectly-labelled-Hong-Kong-DVDs

I was able to manually verify all of these on my PC from file information provided by PowerDVD 10 Ultra. The linked details are a complete list of all the DD-EX titles I have.

You can take these as a positive, or a negative, depending on how you look at things. I guess it all depends on whether you see the glass as half full, or half empty... ;)

This just shipped, should be here in a couple of days.

I've never seen it, but Cheng Pei-Pei is awesome and even if Lo Lieh seemingly appears in everything his presence is always welcome.

It's great! And gory as buggery! Plus, it has fan favourite Shih Szu in it -- I'm sure you're going to love it. :)

Ian Jane
02-04-2011, 12:14 PM
Gory as buggery is always a plus.

Mike T
02-05-2011, 01:52 AM
Well, maybe I was over-selling it by saying that. But it was definitely quite gory in that "loads of blood" fashion the Shaw were good at during the period. It came out of the transition from the '60s-to-'70s and they were pushing the amount of bloodshed up to the levels of the Japanese chanbara films of the time. If you've seen The Rescue or Call to Arms, Lady Hermit is about on a par with those for blood 'n' guts. :)

Remind me to buy the US DVD of All Men are Brothers and Jade Tiger, as I missed those out of Hong Kong. Now if only someone in the US would release The Invincible Fist and Vengeance, and I can be a happy man. :thomason:

Any more Shaw goodness to report? I was going to watch a Shaw title before bed last night, but as I have so many of the damn things I couldn't make up my mind -- so I just went to bed instead. At least I'll soon have Heaven and Hell, at last. Always wanted to know what a psychedelic, kung fu musical set in the seven levels of Chinese Hell looked like, so I guess this means soon I'll know... :p

Ian Jane
02-16-2011, 09:50 AM
I still haven't gotten around to Lady Hermit yet, though it did arrive.

This weekend, I'll make a point of it. I haven't seen any new releases news domestically for a while now.

Mike T

No rush, Geddy Lee...(geddit?). Haha... :funny:

Actually, I might watch Lady Hermit tonight (in EX, haha). Hmmm...

I have to review it, so there's a bit of a rush, but no, no Geddy Lee at all.

Good news! My Love Eterne BD turned up this morning, and I can not only confirm that it's an All Region Blu, but also that the transfer is proper 1080p! This was of concern to me as the original Shaw HD masters appear to have been done as 1080i for broadcast (and then the DVDs authored as PAL to NTSC conversions). And for a film made in 1964 it looks...stunning! (I'll post a screenshot or two later)

Secondary good news: there's trailers on the disc for The One-armed Swordsman and New One-armed Swordsman! Thus, classic Shaw martial arts are on their way in HD! :thomason:

Mike T

As promised, here's some screenshots from the Love Eterne Blu-ray. Bear in mind that these jpegs are compressed to approx. 1/6th the size of the original bitmaps I took, but they give you an idea just how good a 47 year old Huangmei Opera can look on BD...so you can imagine how some of their future releases will shape up! :thomason:

Chinese Opera isn't for everyone, but being a bit of a student of Chinese film history (you all knew that already) the importance of this one on BD was essential for me.

As all the HD masters were already done (and in 1080p against what I informed originally) I'm guessing that's an extremely high likelihood.
I'll check the BD and see if the Swordsman trailers are in 1080p for you, as I didn't fuss about that...for some odd reason (looks at One-armed Swordsman DVD boxset)

Mike T

Btw...got my BD of The Three Smiles (http://www.lovehkfilm.com/reviews/three_smiles.htm) through this morning. And just like the last one: immaculate! Near perfect 1080p picture, looks absolutely astounding for a film made the year after I was born. Yet again, sleeve marked Region A - disc is All Region. The only thing people are probably not going to like is that the discs don't have the original monaural sound; DTS-MA and DD5.1 (at 640kbps) only. Me? I couldn't give two squirts of cat's piss, tbh.

If you're going to have a brain aneurysm* over the lack of original mono (Lord knows how shrill that would sound forty years on), I'd say gives the discs a miss. But if you want Shaws in HD, these are (excuse the language) f**king amazing. From what I've seen so far, those One-armed Swordsman films are going to look pretty supercalifrickinawesome on BD. :woot:

* as I know some people do, present company excepted...

Ian Jane
03-09-2011, 09:51 AM
I won't have a brain aneurysm over it, but I'd rather they do include the original mono mixes along with the newly mixed surround tracks. Then you get your choice. Sometimes the remixes sound great, sometimes they sound horrible and if they're using BD50 there's plenty of room for both.

Mike T
03-09-2011, 11:28 AM
Sometimes the remixes sound great, sometimes they sound horrible and if they're using BD50 there's plenty of room for both.

All BD25s so far, since it's just the movie, two audio tracks (one HD), a 480i featurette, and a handful of trailers per each release.

Remember when we used to bitch about companies not using DVD-9s to get the best bitrate? Or how about the days where we pulled our hair out because no-one released movies letterboxed on VHS? It just goes around in cycles with each format, doesn't it? ;)

Ian Jane
03-09-2011, 11:51 AM
It does and probably always will. The studios, for the most part, only care so much about catalogue titles.

Mike T
03-09-2011, 01:47 PM
Here's a fascinating, though maybe fairly useless, thought concerning the Shaw Blu-rays from IVL.

Though all the films so far have been pressed on BD25s, I was going back through a lot of my Shaw DVDs (also from IVL) while I was doing some video-related work on the PC for the blog. The largest movie file I came across, out of all the discs, was around 6.8GB, and the smallest 3.1GB (which was Image's Corpse Mania disc, btw; authored from an SD master intended for VCD mastering only). The average size so far of the Opera movie file sizes on Blu has been about 21GB, leaving just under 4GB for the extra features.

Thus, even though IVL aren't using optimum size BD50s, they're still creating an improvment of anywhere between three and seven times the file size of the original DVD releases. Plus, they're 1080p, where the original DVDs were produced from 1080i HD broadcast masters (or so I was led to believe by the folk at the Shaw studios who did the work) down-converted to SD...and then standards converted from PAL to NTSC.

Accordingly, the Blu-rays look pretty good all the same. ;)

Mike T
03-25-2011, 09:30 AM
Here's something of interest I found amongst all the archived documents on my PC: a complete list of Shaw titles mastered in HD! So, if it's not in here, there's only an SD master available... :sosad:

Thus, these are the titles you can all expect on BD out of Hong Kong. And the genres, btw, were taken directly from the Shaw catalogue -- so don't blame me if some don't fit the films under their banner.

I've marked stuff I'd buy (have, in a couple of cases) with an asterisk, and marked the titles already released in red. ;)

Here's an absurd question... I haven't seen a lot of Shaw Brothers pictures. What are the top 10 Shaw Brothers martial arts films?

Mike T
03-26-2011, 03:06 PM
John: I'll leave it to the experts here...coz if you listened to me you'd be watching Chinese operas, teen musicals, exploitation and sixties melodramas! Kung fu isn't my thing, never was, never will be. That said, I can tolerate it in small portions as long as there's something else on the platter to dull its after-taste. And I did collect a LOT of the Shaw martial arts films as a) they're not all brainless kung fu fests, and b) the historical film buff in me can't help collecting those things, as part of an historical context, in a larger collection.

But as I said, I'd wait for the other folk here to chime in as I'm really not the right person to ask, contextually that is... ;)

Ian Jane
03-26-2011, 03:58 PM
I'll step up, but I'm not rating them or numbering them because my tastes change about every 20 minutes or so.

Off the top of my head though, these are good ones to start with (suggestions limited to R1 releases that are easy to get):

36th Chamber Of Shaolin
One Armed Swordsman
5 Deadly Venoms
Return Of The 5 Deadly Venoms
Come Drink With Me
Heroes Two
The Master
Bastard Swordsman
5 Element Ninjas

Consider these ones gateway drugs.

There's way more to the Shaw catalogue than just kung fu though, like Mike says. I love their horror films and they made some great sexploitation pictures and crime films too.

You should also see Vengeance, but it's never been released on DVD in R1 and the R3 is out of print. You can find it though if you look for it.

Ian likes rubbing this one in on me, as he knows it was one that I really wanted to see -- but missed out getting it when it was available. And he knows I don't do bootlegs. :p

But as it's coming out on Blu-ray in Hong Kong...I just have be patient and wait that little bit longer for a second (maybe third, really) chance at it. ;)

Ian Jane
03-27-2011, 11:49 AM
Mike, I don't even have an original of it. I might have a DVD-R of the OOP R2 disc somewhere, I'm not sure. I've only seen it once, and that was projected from a 35mm print (ok, so I'm rubbing your noise in that one a bit, I'll admit) in Portland at a Shaw Bros. retrospective a friend of mine co-sponsored. I'll buy the BD in a heartbeat once it comes out.

And John, that's more or less just a greatest hits list. I tried to limit the choices to stuff you could rent or netflix or find easily. They're all great films though.

I was just having a lend, Ian -- you know that! ;)

Anyway, moving right along, here's some random Shaw Brothers fun for the day: when squibs go wrong (from the pretty awful Call to Arms (http://hongkongrewind.com/2011/03/28/call-to-arms-1972/#more-2484))!

ATTN: MIKE T!!!!!!!

Please recommend me a couple of your favorite easily-obtainable (from DDDHouse if not on R 01) 60's teen musicals, my interest is piqued!!

Thanks

Sixties teen-musicals? Hmmm...a man after my own heart! These are the ones I enjoyed (enjoyed most with a *)...

Blue Skies (1967) -- Cheng Pei Pei leads this romantic musical about an up & coming stage star; ever reliable Peter Chen Ho is the romantic lead. Great sets & costumes!
*Guess Who Killed My Twelve Lovers? (1969) -- shot on one of the nearby islands, follows a "murder mystery" formula until the silly twist right at the end. Lots of musical numbers!
King Drummer (1967) -- 60s hearthtrob Ling Yun is the King Drummer of the title; never finished it all, due to the usual interuptions but what I saw very good in a swinging 60s way.
*The Millionaire Chase (1968) -- follows three girls across Asia trying to net themselves millionaire husbands. Very picturesque; you get a great look at a lot of Asia ala-1968
The Singing Escort (1969) -- Lin Chong is no great shakes as the lead (and his singing voice was off, one of the few SB musical stars who dubbed himself), but it has Betty Ting Pei!
Song of Tomorrow (1967) -- not a teen musical, but a very good anti-drug (heroin) romance/melodrama featuring lots of cabaret blues numbers by Ivy Ling Po
*Spring Blossoms (1967) -- Yang Fang and Chin Feng spend most of their time chasing skirt in this one, but actually very good.
*We Love Millionaires (1971) -- very similar to The Millionaire Chase, but with a madcap finale akin to Sellers' The Party (I think, might be confusing the two Millionaires)
Whose Baby is in the Classroom? (1969) -- funny romantic comedy with Li Ching as a schoolgirl and Peter Chen Ho as her teacher. Filmed in Japan.
*The Yellow Muffler (1971) -- features Betty Ting Pei; about three sisters working the cabaret circuit and their romantic exploits. Really liked this one!
Young Lovers (1969) -- largely filmed in snowy Japan, aggressively light and fluffy. Features Jenny Hu and "teen movie" stalwart Yang Fang.

That's what I've watched of the ones I've got (I'm sure there's others, but only so many hours in my life) and a quick check of DDDHouse shows that the majority are still listed as available. :)
Another more comprehensive spot for vintage Shaw musical reviews, including the teen/youth-oriented ones is at brns.com (http://www.brns.com/pages/shawrevs.html) (Brian's got lots of indepth pieces therein)

Btw, the music is all that sort-of jazz-pop fusion that was popular during the era; I'm sure I'll stand corrected if it's something different. Very jazz based, anyways... ;)

NB: I do take requests for my blog (apart from the recent "fuck offs"), so I'll see if I can crank out a review of Guess Who Killed My Twelve Lovers? over the weekend. Ian J's still waiting on the School on Fire review...but then, I'm still waiting on my order with it in it to arrive. Seven weeks and counting now... :dunno:

Media Blasters "enhanced editions" seem to comprise of the film with its English dub as an extra, proper progressive transfers, and a photo/trailer gallery. With the late Lynn Haynes out of the picture, commentaries and other unique extras seemed to fall by the wayside. Thanks for reminding me about this film, btw! I have the IVL R3 DVD and have never watched it!

@ Ian M: Btw, if you ever want to see a GREAT Shaw Brothers youth drama-cum-tragic romance try and find Chang Cheh's Dead End. Film was Ti Lung's big screen debut in a leading role and the whole thing is simply great filmmaking. Per the usual Chang idiom, female characters (in particular Li Ching's romantic lead opposite Ti) are painted minimally and not much more than "flower vase"* roles but otherwise it's really good look at late sixties issues, trends, fashion and lifestyles of the young and foolish. Ti's character idolises James Dean (the whole "life fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse" thing plays in heavily here) and is sooooo cool that he smokes two cigarettes at once all the time ("double the pleasure"). Though it's OOP in HK, if you can find it I'd say it's a must see! :thomason:

* my wife recently explained the whole "flower vase" thing! Though it's been applied to HK filmmaking by Western writers for years, I never knew its real meaning against what I'd read. Apparently it's a common Chinese phrase used to describe the typical airhead female (pretty outside, empty inside), kinda like Clueless' "Monet" remark...

Ghost Eyes - caught this one on Mike's recommendation (thanks!) and liked it quite a bit. Plot holes or not, it's got enough wacky horror set pieces and quirky characters in it that, if it's not always logical, it is always entertaining. Great use of color, some keen old school make up effects, and just lots of weird stuff going on. I liked this one a lot.

You did.

Bamboo House of Dolls was fantastic, one of my new favorites of the WIP genre. Less predictable than most and less deliberately naked than some. I don't appreciate nudity for the sake of nudity but all the scenes in this had to do with the plot and thus seemed more "real".

Definitely one I will watch again.

It's Blood Brothers, Flying Guillotine 1 & 2, Golden Swallow and Mad Monkey Kung Fu for me! Pity they'll only have the audio in mono over the 5.1 and 5.1EX remixes that the Shaw Digital Restoration Centre did for Celestial. Guess you can't win them all...

Cool. And, lucky for me, a whole swag of the Thai pressings of the Shaw discs are starting to see re-release with English subs (for a brief time, all of the reissues were authored without the original English subs; however, that's reverted back to with them again now). Watched Super Inframan last night with a few friends - it got picked over Alien From The Deep. Haven't seen it in a few years but it all came back pretty quickly. This has got to be one of the most colorful, crazy, everything but the kitchen sink superhero movies sever made. Obviously it borrows from loads of Japanese movies and TV shows and evidently would influence American TV shows like Yo! Gabba Gabba but dammit if it's impossible not to smile the entire time this movie was one.

A friend summed it up perfectly - 'This movie is just ninety minutes of a goody guy fighting crazy bad guys.' That pretty much nails it.

You can find info about their martial arts films everywhere, I can also see list of top musicals earlier in this thread, but what about other genres? What are essential crime/action (set in modern times), comedies or (s)exploitation from SB? I really enjoyed the Shaw Brothers take on female revenge movies with a nod to the Pam Grier blaxploitation flicks in KISS OF DEATH & THE SEXY KILLER.

http://youtu.be/qaKmVIkZ76c

http://youtu.be/RRLWoEMxRHY

Also, the Shaw Brothers take on Charlie's Angels with DEADLY ANGELS aka BOD SQUAD definitely had its moments as well. Evelyn Kraft was one sexy woman -- puts Farrah Fawcett in the shade IMO.

http://youtu.be/lJeX6zotS48

I also recently saw Chang Cheh's SINGING KILLER & it was fun. A bizarre mix of film noirish elements within a standard heist pic with bits of a musical tossed in...yeah, it's sort of all over the place but entertaining. I'm a fan of David Chiang & Ti Lung, so I'll pretty much watch anything with those two apart from their usual kung fu flicks like DEAD END.

Seeing that Jap blu ray of MIGHTY PEKING MAN makes me yearn even more for the Well Go USA blu that became vapor ware. :sosad: Speaking of SBs from Well Go USA, they are releasing two more titles by director, Chor Yuen under their Sword Masters series, early next year. DEATH DUEL (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRH0HV8/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=cionfiascire-20&camp=213381&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B00FRH0HV8&adid=15M71R9AZ3C98D398CCV&&ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cityonfire.com%2F) & LEGEND OF THE BAT aka CLANS OF INTRIGUE 2 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRH0HUE/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=cionfiascire-20&camp=213381&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B00FRH0HUE&adid=0VP5T258FVC83532E443&&ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cityonfire.com%2F) are both up for pre-order on Amazon.

yeah, when BCI folded, it really put a dent into SB blu ray titles as they were set to release something like 14 or 15 titles before they went kaput. I managed to pick up their only release, the now OOP OPIUM & THE KUNG FU MASTER & would've loved to get my hands on LIFE GAMBLE on blu but c'est la vie. I imagine since there are so many readily available cheap bootlegs & torrents available for SB titles that few people would even bother to pick up legitimate versions of the DVDs let alone the more expensive blu ray versions.

It looks rather quiet on the blu ray front for SB titles other than the Japanese paramount versions which you highlighted earlier & the German TVP media book blu rays (http://www.post76.com/x2/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=161398). They are quite pricey but very lavish & the PQ is supposedly top notch. So far, I believe they have released FIVE SHAOLIN MASTERS, SHAOLIN AVENGERS & THE SAVAGE FIVE in addition to the NEW ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN & are due to release CRIPPLED AVENGERS and 7 MAN ARMY in the near future.

I recently saw THE GENERATION GAP - Dir. Chang Cheh (1973) & it's essentially two films in one. The first part is a really sappy saccharine 'Romeo & Juliet' love story between David Chiang & future j-pop star, Agnes Chan. They play two kids from affluent families who fall in love much to the consternation of their families. Their relationship also causes a lot of discord and dissension amongst their friends and classmates...so they decide to stake out on their own & live independently from their families. It's really hard to take this plot seriously since there is a significant age gap between them. Also, they are supposedly a romantic couple but there is zero sexual interaction or even 'real' romantic interludes and this is understandable since it would probably be too 'unsavory' since Agnes Chan's character is not even 16 yrs of age; while David Chiang is playing a 21 year old. The most affection, he shows his young lover is a innocent tug on her nose! Plus, this first half is marred by an annoying and cheesy pop soundtrack sung by the aforementioned Agnes Chan. The worst part is that the lyrics are sung in English and makes the viewer all too aware of the utter cheesiness of the songs. :puke:

The second half is pretty decent with Ti Lung playing David Chiang's older and more 'respectable' brother attempting to turn David Chiang's spiraling out of control life back around. If you blink, you might miss Alexander Fu Sheng making a quick cameo appearance as Agnes Chan's cousin. Plenty of rough neck kung fu action too as David Chiang gets involved with a ruthless group of thugs who rob nightclubs and banks for kicks. Thank god, the second half of the film is devoid of the cheesy pop songs that ruined the first half and instead returns with a more heavy fuzz guitar laced soundtrack.

From Deadline: (http://m.deadline.com/2014/02/el-rey-network-sets-premiere-dates-for-matador-the-directors-chair-inks-licensing-deal-with-celestial-pictures-for-martial-arts-films/)

"El Rey also said it has inked a multi-year licensing deal with Celestial Pictures for martial arts titles from the Shaw Brothers library. Financial terms were not disclosed. Pics include The 36th Chamber, Chamber Of Shaolin, The Sword Of Swords, The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter, Executioners From Shaelin, and The Flying Guillotine. All films will be featured throughout the schedule and during the network’s monthly Saturday kung-fu marathon, the next one set for March 1."

I was channel surfing last night and came across One-Armed Swordsman on El Rey. I wasn't surprised that it was dubbed, I expected that, but I was surprised that they showed it in scope, which was nice. Figured they'd zoom it into 1.78.1 but nope, it was in its proper aspect ratio. I also randomly encountered this same channel showing Dolemite uncut and in 1.33.1 with the boom mics intact on Friday night and was impressed that they were running promo spots for Godzilla and Sonny Chiba too.

I get El Rey here on TWC but totally forgot about their Kung Fu saturdays programming. I did manage to catch Switchblade Sisters during their Friday night Grindhouse programming but I'm going to have to remind myself to DVR the kung fu ones if I forget again. By the way, is there a future programming schedule available anywhere? I went to the network's website but couldn't find any info.

Looks like the same German distributor that recently put out Die Gelbe Hölle des Shaolin (Shaolin Master & The Kid) on blu ray has signed a deal with Celestial to license a few more titles including BLACK MAGIC, THE DEADLY DUO, KILLER CONSTABLE, MAN OF IRON, THE DUEL, THE MIGHTY PEKING MAN, SUPER INFRAMAN. Hopefully some of them will be released on blu ray with English subs! :shake:

So, maybe three years ago, I bought a Shaw Bros calendar, not realizing it was a 2009 calendar (and it was not currently 2009). I was disappointed but held on to it. Just checked it and the dates match up perfectly for 2015 (even if not the holidays). Happy New Year to me! :bruce:

So according to this post here (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=256319&page=5) the set listed here (http://www.yesasia.com/us/the-36th-chamber-of-shaolin-trilogy-blu-ray-hong-kong-version/1038163552-0-0-0-en/info.html) is of decent quality and has lossless audio and English subs.

he 36th Chamber of Shaolin Trilogy Blu-ray set includes the three classic Shaw Brothers kung fu films directed by Lau Kar Leung and starring Gordon Liu - The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978), Return of the 36th Chamber (1980) and Disciples of the 36th Chamber (1985) - as well as postcards and special features (interview with director, behind-the-scenes, trailers).

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978)
One of the most classic titles in the Shaw Brothers canon, the first 36th Chamber of Shaolin stars Gordon Liu as a young student whose family and school are wiped out by oppressive Manchu government. Injured and on the run, he seeks refuge at the Shaolin temple and excels in his martial arts training. When his training is complete, he returns to the outside world to seek revenge and eventually establishes the 36th Chamber, dedicated to the training of secular disciples at Shaolin.

Return of the 36th Chamber (1980)
Gordon Liu returns to the 36th Chamber in the new role of a small-time con man posing as a monk. After sneaking his way into Shaolin, he is given the chance to work at the temple, and begins learning martial arts on his own through observing the monks' training.

Disciples of the 36th Chamber (1985)
Gordon Liu reprises the role of monk San Te from the first film, this time assuming a mentor role for a reckless young martial artist and future folk hero named Fong Sai Yuk (Hsiao Ho), who is sent to take refuge at Shaolin after clashing with Manchu officials. Fong's continued resistance against the Manchu government brings danger to all of the disciples of 36th Chamber.

* Special Features:

- Behind The Scenes
- Photo Gallery
~ A Hero Birthplace
~ Hero On The Scaffolding

I got their last ones for around £25 each delivered. Still pricey, but consider it costs me £20 for Code Red's junk movies. Most German releases are £20-25 ish anyway. They know suckers will pay it :eyebrows: But many argue that they are small run L.E's so the price is justified.

I will only buy something like One Armed Swordsman if it also includes the English audio track as well as English subs on the Mandarin.

Ok, thanks for the info. That sucks for sure. In terms of the older TVP releases not sure which was the last to have English. I do know the following titles have at least English subs (some also have the English dub):

NEW ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN
RETURN OF THE 5 DEADLY VENOMS
5 SHAOLIN MASTERS
DISCIPLES OF SHAOLIN
SHAOLIN AVENGERS
5 MAN ARMY
THE SAVAGE 5

Also the Shaw Blu rays from MVL do NOT have English (INVINCIBLE SHAOLIN, SHAOLIN TEMPLE, MAD MONKEY KUNG FU, KILLER CLANS, HEROES TWO, 36 CHAMBERS TRILOGY, BLOOD BROTHERS, BOXER FROM SHANTUNG, HEROIC ONES)

Yes hopefully that is the plan. If they can also include the English dubs that would be great. Since we have some diehard SBs fans on here, thought I would take a gander & ask a question about a movie I saw a few years ago & forgot the title. It stars Chan Shen, one of the ubiquitous SBs character actors. He's probably known best for his portrayal of the head of the gang who targets mainland refugees to HK in LOST SOULS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70cH9Gc-gko). In one of the more infamous scenes, he sodomizes one of the poor buggers as a birthday present from his minions. Once you've seen him, he's kind of hard to forget with his bug eyes and bald/shaven head.

Anyway, in the movie I'm talking about - he actually dons a wig and plays a super of high rise public estate. He's a loser with no prospects in love or money and the tenants treat him like shit on a daily basis. His luck eventually turns around when he hits the lottery and wins millions. He was able to win the lotto by consulting a ouija board which led him to the winning numbers on the condition that he give up his vices - namely gambling and being a sexual deviant. Of course, he promises he'll turn a new leaf & become an upstanding citizen if he can just win the lotto but soon the lure of wealth turns him into an even bigger asshole. He gets his comeuppance in the end with his arms being reduced to bloody stumps as he tries to get the ouija board to give him the winning numbers to the lotto yet again.

Does the synopsis sound familiar to anyone? I tried searching at hkmdb (http://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=13148&display_set=eng) but it lists a staggering 167 films in Chan Sen's filmography! Like finding a needle in the proverbial haystack. Any help will be kindly appreciated.

I'm going to have to look through all my unlabeled bootleg discs I have laying around & watch it again. Obviously a lame morality tale on the surface based on some Chinese fable or whatnot but in essence a rather entertaining sleazy exploitation flick. I should expect no less considering T.F. Mou directed it.

Hopefully, Celestial is going to eventually put out the 760 titles from their library for digital streaming. This site currently doesn't really appeal to the enthusiast fan since the film library is limited to around 100 titles so far & diehard SB fans will have already purchased the physical copies of these titles anyway. I need to see the stuff put out on the Ziieagle box remastered in HD & the more obscure titles that never got any type of release before I get ecstatic.

I remember watching this back in the day and thinking it was a pretty grim portrayal of HK's underclass & mainland refugees. The whole angle with Alex Man as a kickboxing Rocky Balboa was kind of lame but at least it they had the good sense not to "Hollywood" the ending. Not sure I'd pay $40 for it though but maybe when DDDHouse has it for $20 down the line.

Chor Yuen's classic DEATH DUEL (1977) starring Derek Yee is coming out on blu ray courtesy of IVL/Celestial. Pre-orders up now at Yesasia (http://www.yesasia.com/us/death-duel-1977-blu-ray-hong-kong-version/1054808873-0-0-0-en/info.html), buyoyo (http://www.buyoyo.com/buyoyo/eng/ProductDisplay.do?prrfnbr=1645508&prtype=0) and dddhouse (http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_details.php?ProductID=15818).

Derek Yee actually had plans to remake this movie for years and finally finished production last year but looks like crap IMHO compared to the original.

So German label, INKED PICTURES is putting out some expensive ass mediabooks of a few SB titles (WATER MARGIN, SOUL OF THE SWORD, VENGEANCE) according to their facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Inked-Pictures-Label-317198901763666/) page. They are really fucking pricey! Charging 50 and up for these blu rays with T-shirts, posters and hologram stickers. Supposedly English friendly too. I guess this is another option since TVP stopped adding English subs at the behest of Celestial.

Apparently, some of the newer WVG Media blu rays are English friendly as well. Amazon Germany lists HUMAN LANTERNS & ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS as having English subs in addition to the Mandarin mono soundtracks but they are mum when it comes to VENGEANCE & SOUL OF THE SWORD but it has been confirmed that VENGEANCE does include English subs and these titles are dirt cheap too at about $11 shipped. I bet some of the others that don't explicitly say they have English subs have them like VENGEANCE -- we just need someone to buy them and test them out for us. :yup:

Richardrli

Inked Pictures have delayed their mediabook releases until April, also I wonder if HUMAN LANTERNS will be uncut. I also hope that the mediabook blu rays will be 1080p and not 1080i even though that's not really a major issue.

Was HUMAN LANTERNS announced as part of 88Films Asia line? Not that 88Films is above reproach either since they fucked up on SEEDING OF A GHOST by listing the Cantonese mono soundtrack and it ended up being the Mandarin instead and HEX was shit too. The picture looked soft with tons of DNR and certainly it's not 88films fault if they were given these masters by Celestial but the out of sync subtitles and subs that disappear too quickly from the screen are inexcusable. That HEX blu ray was a total dud.

Richardrli

HUMAN LANTERNS is part of Inked Pictures second batch of releases, along with THE CHINESE BOXER and ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS. The first batch as you know are VENGEANCE, WATER MARGIN and SOUL OF THE SWORD. I just hope that the second batch mediabooks will be released not too long after the first batch considering the latter are going to be held up for more than a month. 88 Films haven't announced anything past their 8th title for their Asia line, which is MASKED AVENGERS, the two other remaining films on this line currently are MIGHTY PEKING MAN and KILLER CONSTABLE, both of which are available on pre-order right now. It's still too early to tell but the chances of them releasing any more after this still hangs in the balance likely depending on sales figures for their first 8 titles, so fingers crossed. My gut feeling is that they would at least get two more out to make it to 10.

I hope they don't pull a HUMAN LANTERNS again. :todd: It seemed odd that they pulled the subs at the last minute since even the Amazon description said they had them. Could this possibly mean that maybe 88Films has acquired the exclusive english language rights to HUMAN LANTERNS? That reminds me I better pick up MASKED AVENGERS soon as they have less than 30 left with the full slip covers.

Out of that recently announced batch, I'll definitely be picking up all three.

The good news is that according to that forum member (sorry I forgot his/her username?) mentioned that if you contact Amazon DE customer service that they'll issue you a refund right away and not even ask for the disc to be returned. Yeah, those black amaray cases were pretty neat looking even though they appeared slimmer than the standard size ones -- yeah, I wish they would've continued with those for this set of releases too.

Btw, I don't really complain about these releases since they're so cheap but I have to say ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS is one of their poorer efforts. The subs have always had niggling issues but it's particularly bad here with the interspersing of German characters in the English subs (as you can see characters with diacritical marks and umlauts mixed in) and the soundtrack has all kinds of problems too. Even during the fight scenes, you'll hear the soundtrack constantly switch from the German audio back to the Chinese one. :pissed:

Since this is the catchall thread for Kung Fu releases. Thought I'd mention that a couple more Asia Line (German) dvd releases are due for June and July. The first one is going to be in June and it's BIG BOSS 2 aka DRAGON LEE FIGHTS AGAIN and after that in July will be Wang Tao's ALONG COMES THE TIGER. Both are R2 PAL, WS and English friendly. How these German releases compare to the releases currently available, I have no idea? Need spannick to elaborate on that matter.

Btw, any of you guys keep up to date on the latest 88Films Asia releases? I know #13 "T" is supposed to be THE BRAVE ARCHER but what about #12 "C" and #14 "B"? or is #14 "B" THE BRAVE ARCHER? Some suggestions for what the "C" title might be

Crippled Avengers
Come Drink With Me
Coward Bastard
Clan of the White Lotus
Chinatown Kid

Im going to guess its Crippled Avengers as 88 seem keen on releasing the Venoms films. My preferred pick would be Clan of the White Lotus. Coward Bastard would be a good obscure choice as the DVD is rare. Chinatown Kid was only released in a cut form by Celestial on DVD.

I'm with MarK C. on CHINATOWN KID...I have the 'sad ending' alternate version but of course, it never received the remastered job from Celestial and it was pieced together from what looks to be a VHS source on its last legs. I'm not too keen on CRIPPLED AVENGERS since I already have the TVP blu ray. Not a fan of COWARD BASTARD either (I have the IVL R3 dvd when it was still relatively easy to acquire on the used market) but more due to that movie sucking pretty bad. In the end, any English friendly SBs release on blu ray is welcome but guess I'm a bit more picky now since the WVG german ones have come out at rock bottom prices and don't want to double dip on duplicate titles. Since CHINESE BOXER might also be a "C" possibility.

Btw, Mark C. can you let me know which other German kung fu titles you'll be purchasing -- I want to make sure I didn't miss one myself and pick it up too & thanks for biting the bullet.

I forgot about CHINESE BOXER-one of my favourites as well. We need that one on Blu with the english dub! Now i think that is the right answer as CRIPPLED AVENGERS might be too un-pc and they would probably rather call it RETURN OF THE 5 DEADLY VENOMS. I dont mind if its either CHINESE BOXER or CLAN OF THE WHITE LOTUS both are great movies. I would also dig a complete CHINATOWN KID blu ray but i dont think thats likely.

Yeah and I appreciate that they usually put out the complete uncut version with restored footage even if it's from an inferior source. Seems the Germans do kung fu right just like the Frenchies with Japanese and HK cinema. I recently re-watched Johnnie To's THE MISSION again (one of my personal faves from To) and the only decent print anywhere is the French PAL release in which I had to get with custom subs. Sucks that we'll probably never see a blu ray release of that one. :(

I heard that a future 88films SBs dual format release is going to be another Ho Meng Hua "flying weapon" flick, in THE DRAGON MISSLE. It was apparently given away by 88Films in the enclosed booklet for THE FLYING GUILLOTINE. I have the IVL dvd and I recall I did a mini-review of it on here but too lazy to search for it. It wasn't anything too special IMHO but some decent action sequences of the titular weapon, although the actual mechanical effects were rather cheesy and of course, the usual top notch SBs production values.

my understanding is they are a bit uneven. from screen comparisons etc. some look good, others offer not much improvement on SD. not to mention about 88's mistakes with the audio on a few of theirs. i have only bought a few so far and am being picky about which ones i get as there is no point in rebuying most of them again if they just minor improvement as i already bought a lot on DVD but if they have the english dub this'll sway me to pick them up. or if i dont have the film at all ill get the blu but the films i dont have are few and far between.

Yes, two different German labels. I haven't heard or read when the next batch of 3 SBs titles from WVG are going to be released.

Just an update on the upcoming TVP blu ray releases. Kung Fu Bob has released a preview of the cover artwork for WAY OF THE TIGER aka CHALLENGE THE DRAGON. He also mentioned he's doing the cover art for another upcoming release for 1978 film, SHAOLIN KUNG FU MASTER aka THE FIVE INVINCIBLE GUARDS. Both of these releases will have the English dub.

I could've sworn this has been out for awhile already? Anyway, it's not English friendly since TVP received a cease and desist from Celestial and lost their license anyway. Speaking of which, the latest news about TVP is not good either. They might fold altogether. But yeah, the US Blu Ray of DELIGHTFUL FOREST is one of the worst Blu Rays that Well Go ever released. An interlaced mess.

I'll be picking up those Koch titles since they're English friendly. I hope we hear something soon about future WVG SBs releases. I've been pretty satisfied with these mainly due to them being budget priced! The only letdown was HUMAN LANTERNS due to the lack of subs after initially stating they would have them.

Haven't heard a peep about the next batch of WVG Media Shaw Brothers blu ray titles but Koch Media has been busy with two further SBs Chang Cheh titles up for pre-order. Scheduled for a January 11th release are English friendly blu rays of SHAOLIN RESCUERS (https://www.amazon.de/Todesschrei-gelben-Tigers-Shaolin-Rescuers/dp/B076T62TVW) and DUEL OF FISTS (https://www.amazon.de/Fan-Chu-T%C3%B6dliche-Rache-Blu-ray/dp/B076T4YQRB/ref=pd_bxgy_74_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=XEEV7SX4TFQR7XDHFCMG).

FilmArt will be re-releasing their blu ray of Chang Cheh's THE DEADLY DUO in a single amaray case with different artwork. I've read the release date is at the end of this month and yes, it will include English subs with the original Mandarin audio like the previous BD release.

https://image.ibb.co/iS6BXm/a2.jpg (https://ibb.co/g0Vuk6)

Also, re-releasing a couple of their other kung fu titles in a double pack on DVD. FISTS OF THE DOUBLE K aka FIST TO FIST and THUNDER KICK aka SURVIVAL OF THE DRAGON. Like the previous releases, these will have the English dub.

https://image.ibb.co/fGkidR/a1.jpg (https://ibb.co/cnQidR)

The more important news for me is that FilmArt will be releasing Pao Hsueh Li's Taiwanese swordplay flick, THE HEROES aka SHAOLIN REVENGER on 4K remastered blu ray with an expected release date of April 2018.

Strangely I've always received my Amazon Germany orders fairly quickly, while my buddy has waited weeks longer for his to arrive even when he's ordered a few days before me and he only lives 20 or so miles away. I did have an issue once where THE EMPEROR AND HIS BROTHER never showed up within the estimated time frame and after contacting customer service, they sent me a replacement via upgraded DHL expedited shipping. I've always been impressed with Amazon Germany's customer service.

I have this German print but not the original dvd. If I recall correctly, both versions are available (uncut and shorter German theatrical version in the bonus features) with the main feature showing the additional footage of the award ceremony at the police academy in the beginning. Also, a very young Jackie Chan is in this flick not only as a stuntman but playing an extra.

Inked Pictures have delayed their mediabook releases until April, also I wonder if HUMAN LANTERNS will be uncut. I also hope that the mediabook blu rays will be 1080p and not 1080i even though that's not really a major issue.

I heard Inked Pictures really screwed over Kung Fu Bob and all the titles they were supposed to release last year (THE PIRATE, KID WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, CHINATOWN KID) just ended up vaporware. Although, a few of their releases are for sale on eBay like THE ANGRY GUEST (https://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4712.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=Zehn+gelbe+F%C3%A4uste+f%C3%BCr+die+Rache+%28 Shaw+Brothers%29+%28Mediabook+C%29&_sacat=0). I saw on their FB that these are indeed English friendly. Anyone brave enough to bite the bullet?

I wouldn't be surprised if Koch Media eventually releases it as the IP Mediabooks are just repackaging of WVG's BD releases anyway. Koch is going to release both THE PIRATE & BOXER REBELLION sometime in Mid-March. KID WITH THE GOLDEN ARM was in one of the trailers too, so expect that to be released by Koch in the near future.

Good to know, fingers crossed, there are so many great blu's and dvd's being released in Germany and I feel like I need to start getting caught up with some of the more significant ones. Koch media are stacked with excellent releases in January and February, pretty affordable as well. Do you know if the covers are reversible?
