My favorite Van Damme! Finally.

I pray for a director's cut but I'll take anything for this one.

Yeah, this needs to be the director's cut.

I like how in the right corner of the cover it looks like his mullet is on fire.

They also announced SUDDEN DEATH recently.

Good times for Van Damme fans.

Good name for an action movie MULLET ON FIRE!

THIS is the kind of title that makes me seriously consider getting a blu ray player!

'bout time I got a good copy to replace my LD copy.

Add this to Nowhere To Run and you've got some solid JVCD action.

I'm sure this'll be the unrated version: the US 'R' rated version has never been released over here in any form.

Screenies for the Italian BD, compared against the German DVD:

Plus it's the unrated version too, with a runtime of 99:53 mins :)

I'll never forget the theatrical screening I attended in San Diego. The theater was spilling over with Navy sailors. They were not impressed with the film, and they made their displeasure known, to put it mildly. I'd like to see HARD TARGET again only this time without the audience participation. I'll buy this blu-ray in the fall if it's uncut. John Woo and Jean-Claude deserve a second chance.

How different is the uncut version from the American version? radically different or just some violent shots?

The cuts are to moments of violence, largely, and the differences are, apparently, quite substantial, Richard. There's a detailed breakdown here: http://movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=4909

I've never seen the 'R' rated version (the unrated version was the cut released over here at the cinemas and on video). I've got a workprint/preview version which, whilst in rough shape and with a temp soundtrack (thus minus the film's effective score), is even more interesting: for example, gone is the jokey bit of business with the grenade at the end (Henriksen fumbling to remove the fuse), which judging by its reappearance at the climax of Raimi's SPIDER-MAN was an addition by Raimi & Co.

The differences between the unrated version and the workprint are detailed here: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=456

That certainly answers my question, Paul, thanks. I checked amazonUK. HARD TARGET and SUDDEN DEATH are both region free and reasonably priced. Available August 5. That means they're a definite purchase.

Richard, Zavvi have both titles in their 2 for £11 offer. (This is where I've placed my preorders.) I believe they ship to the US.

Ian, it's the full 'unrated' version, with a runtime of 99:33. The disc is barebones: not even the trailer is included. The film presentation is very good, easily surpassing the previous DVDs.

The aspect ratio is 1.85:1. I think the image is very slightly 'zoomboxed' in comparison with my old UK DVD (non-anamorphic) of the unrated version. Contrast is very good: the juxtaposition of the sun-bleached daytime scenes and the moody, noir-ish nighttime sequences is handled very well. Blacks are deep and rich, especially in those nighttime sequences. To my eyes, there seems to be a slightly 'filtered' look to the film, but it's not too heavy: detail and grain are present throughout. (Maybe it's simply to do with the encoding.) Audio is via a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. I only sampled this on my surround sound player, as I didn't want to wake the kids up, but this audio track offers a rich, dynamic soundscape that's really 'punchy' in the action sequences.

In all, this is far and away the best presentation I've seen of the unrated cut of the film (at least, since its cinema release over here). It's easily worth a purchase, especially for the reasonably prices that it's selling for on some online stores. (I bought mine in a 2 for £11 deal at Zavvi.com - I also snagged SUDDEN DEATH in the same deal.) I think the disc is well-worth the money. I just wish it had some contextual material: even a trailer would suffice, but I'd love to have seen some of the deleted scenes from the workprint and preview versions on this disc.

How about SUDDEN DEATH?

Diabolik (http://www.diabolikdvd.com/category/Browse-All-Titles/Hard-Target-(Uncut-Blu~Ray-Region-B).html) now has 11 copies of this in stock. Not a bad price for an import BD either, 25 bucks.

How about SUDDEN DEATH?

I watched this in HD on Netflix recently and it looked really good. I'd be shocked if the Blu is a different transfer.

I have both SUDDEN DEATH and HARD TARGET on order from Amazon UK.

Watched Hard Target last night, the transfer is pretty nice. Not a single extra on the disc, sadly, but the DTS-HD track is pretty rowdy, as it should be.

It's a fun movie. Hadn't seen it in a few years but it holds up well. I forgot how much of a western this one really is. The finale in the warehouse with all of the mardi gras parade floats is nuts - gotta love how JCVD does flips and spins all over the place just because.

How about SUDDEN DEATH?
I've only scanned through SUDDEN DEATH so far, but what I've seen is quite impressive.
