Moved out west a week ago. Took some photos along the way.

Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma all look the same. It's like one big farm until you get to Texas. And there's farms there too.

This first photo I took at a movie theater that's around the corner from my old house. Been meaning to get a photo of it for years and on my last day in Park Forest, Illinois I did.

This is also from Illinois.

I took more pictures of Illinois but they all look the same. Some times the barn was a different color or it was raining outside but same picture.

Passing through Saint Lou heading southwest by southwest into Missouri.

Oklahoma is alright. I thought I took more photos but all I got are these two.

When you get to Texas the sky really opens up!

Rest area in Texas is fancy, like a little museum about the Texas Panhandle. It has an incredible view of all the dirt.

New Mexico is beautiful. The rocky plains. At times it feels like your on the moon, or Mars.

But first a rest area with a dinosaur leg ...

First things first, had to hit up the welcome stop for a quick tinkle. It's a pattern.

Watch out for poisonous mugs!

'Nother rest area, nother chance to stretch my piss.

Purple cacti with yellow flowers. Beautiful and terrifyingly alien at the same time. It's like something outta Hellraiser.

what prompted the move from flat green to flat brown?

Ian Jane
05-26-2013, 09:16 AM
Yeah, why the move? Not that I blame you. When Alison and I drove from Portland to NYC years back driving through AZ and NM was one of the high points. AZ really is like being on Mars once you're out there with all that red rock. It's super beautiful and weird. I'd like to make it back there some time and bum around in the desert more.

My wife got a job offer out here. We vacationed in AZ a couple times and when the opportunity came up we said yes. I love Chicago but I always hoped to get out and see more of the world some day.

I'll never have to shovel snow or mow the lawn again. It's summertime every day.

Congrats, I hope you guys are genuinely happy out there!

Thanks boss!

I still haven't taken any photos of Phoenix. We're right on the city limits, it's not city-ish at all where we are. The apartment we got overlooks a farm of some sort so I see plenty of greenery. And really Illinois was mostly brown/grey a good 70% of the year. Arizona seems way more colorful in comparison, I don't know if it's the desert air or less pollution but the colors here seem more vivid. It's got it's crummy parts too but overall it's really quite beautiful.

I did get some pictures of Scottsdale. These were taken by an In-&-Out Burger in the parking lot with the mall to our back, across the street is desert. Even the crummiest spots around here have wonderful landscaping.

These are from this past winter. I will not be missing this.

Flagstaff gets snow if I'm feeling crazy enough to miss it.

I got all fucking sloppy drunk with Ari Lehman and Reggie Banister in Scottsdale at a hotel that opened up to desert. Wandering through that 'back yard' at 2am wrecked was awesome. I'm glad I didn't get stung by a scorpion or bitten by a snake though.

I hate driving but more power to you dude.

Oh man that sounds rad!

There where times growing up and living in the Chicago area that I felt like I was in an episode of SPECTREMAN. Just grey dirty skies. I will miss it though. I'll miss the food for sure. And the people. But I'm really jazzed to finally be out west!

Ian Jane
05-27-2013, 09:22 AM
I'd imagine growing up in Chicago is a lot like growing up in SW Ontario... grey. I don't miss it though. I go back a few times a year to see family and that's enough.

I think a change of scenery is good.

Scott

I think a change of scenery is good.

I needed more adventure and excitement in my life. It's good to get out of your comfort zone.

So instead of sitting in Illinios watching M*A*S*H, Now I'm sitting in Phoenix watching James Bond and Spider-Man.

Alan Alda would have made a shitty James Bond. He's got the martini thing down but he'd bed the chicks in the first half only to wind up crying in their laps in the second half. I'd make a shitty Bond too, come to think of it. But I'd be a great doctor!

Shemp would make a great Q showing Bond all the gadgets and having it all blow up in his face. "What is this a shoe or a bomb--BOOM!"

Yeah and I watched the LONG LONG TRAILER before I left. And MIDNIGHT RUN.

"Trailer brakes first!"

I didn't have a trailer tho.

Now, are we to believe that both Scott and Ian have been to Mars now? How could you say with such certainty then what it looks like.

Scott probably didn't even snap these photos and instead just bought a handful of postcards. When did you have time to get the film developed and then scanned in? While you were driving?

Barry M
05-28-2013, 12:08 AM
And what the **** happened to the trailer????

Barry M
05-28-2013, 12:13 AM
Never mind about the trailer -- I was forgetting the first rule of Italian driving.

Thanks everyone.

It's quite a beautiful country, just not in most of the spots people actually live. This was also only half a dozen states, imagine what the other 44 have to offer! I do appreciate good photos of urban decay too. Beauty's in the eye of the beholder an all that.

Took a short trip to Lake Havasu today. It's a small resort town, 200 miles northwest of Phoenix. Snapped a few photos.

Now you need to watch DAY OF THE WOLVES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alFHsdG10aQ), or if beards aren't your thing, BRIDGE ACROSS TIME (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fluhlPg87Dk).

Now I need to watch DAY OF THE WOLVES.

I believe it's called a hikewho.

That owl looks like he got caught doing something bad. Maybe he wrote it.

At least he's not responsible for "hikewho", though.
