Thought it'd be nice to see your random shots that don't fit into any of the other categories.

I took this one the other day. I really like it. However, I'm not sure whether I prefer the monochrome of the colour version: the monochrome brings out the texture in the sign, but the colour has more depth in terms of the relationship between foreground and background (imo).

This is the best shot from the last roll of film I developed (Tri-x, shot on a Bessa R with a 50mm Jupiter 8 lens). Again, I'm quite proud of this one.

No flashes or lighting or tripods allowed during closing ceremonies at Boy Scout Camp, but this shot turned out kinda cool considering. Also you have to stay seated so I cropped out the heads that screwed up the right side and now the composition looks weird, but I like the way the colors came out.

Love the light in that one, Ian.

I'm quite pleased with this one, which I took in a local bookshop/art shop about a month ago (only just cleared the memory card in my camera).

Apart from boring publicity shots all my shooting recently has been on my shitty camera phone with the not so suprising result that all the pictures kind of suck. I did like this one though of my cat Thunderball seeming to puzzle over the mysteries of life- in reality he was just about to give himself some minor burns.

Not Thunderball. He's not too bright. Handsome though. Both my cats like to stick their paws in fire. Lots of meowing and howling results but they don't seem to damage themselves. And I'm definitely not professional. You should have heard the bollocking I got last week for taking a few dozen shots out of focus. 'twas brutal.

I was quite pleased with this image, which I took 'from the hip' as I walked past a studio in which a live debate was being recorded for a local television station. I liked the way the three guests had similar - but different - body language (the folded hands, with the guest on the end's bowed head reminding me of a prisoner waiting to be executed) and the juxtaposition with the distorted body shape of the figure on the right.

I know people who do! It's creepy. You know those rockabilly types? Looks like a fun subculture but a lot of those guys didn't just bring back the look. They're living the whole lifestyle. The car, the tv dinners, the little lady who knows to have dinner on the table when her man comes home or else feel the back of his hand. Makes me ucomfortable.

This Tuesday I do my first with-complete-strangers paid shoot which is quite a lot more pressure than the ones I've done so far. As an employee I only get a fraction but they're paying $350 each for photos so slightly panicked- particularly as I can't black out the venue which makes it very different conditions to anything I've done previously and, hell, I've not done much to start with. To prep I managed to get in for a quick practice shoot. Turned out to be an awesome venue to shoot in and got lots of awesome stuff.

Is there a better option than photobucket for importing photos? The compression there is a bit awful. Much prefered the colours on this before photobucket got it's mitts on it.

Loving taking photos at the moment. For a while I was frustrated by how basic it is. There's really only four useful buttons on a camera and the function of one of those is performed better in post and the other three are just different means to the same end. There's something about the simplicity of it though that really drives you because even the small errors are frustrating in a way that much larger errors aren't in more complex art forms. My most recent frustration:

Have you thought of going back to film, Dom? That shot would look lovely on Portra 400. A similar effect could be achieved by cross-processing in Photoshop (or Lightroom), but it's not the same. Grab a 35mm camera (or, better yet for studio work, a nice medium format camera, especially a TLR with a waist-level viewfinder - which encourages a different perspective on the world) and reduce your number of usable buttons to two (shutter speed and aperture): there's a purity and simplicity to that which focuses the mind, Zen-like :)

A lot of classical Hollywood portraits were shot on large format cameras in which the image would appear upside down in the viewfinder. This often led to a more formal, studied type of composition. The slower pace at which the shoots took place (in comparison with portraiture in the digital era) contributed to a more studied pose by the subjects, in many instances. There’s a good clip of Rankin trying to get to grips with one of these cameras at around 6 minutes in this documentary: http://vimeo.com/60749359 It’s quite interesting stuff, and worth a look if you haven’t seen it before.

To get this look without hiring out a vintage large format film camera, I’ve heard of people using their cameras upside down. It sounds silly, but it’s a thing. As your portraits reference that classical Hollywood aesthetic, have you tried this before, Dom?

Dom D
06-09-2014, 08:08 PM
No, to be honest I'm pretty ignorant of others techniques but its an interesting idea. I have been looking at large format film photography a bit recently. When you consider a medium format digital can cost $50, 000 they really do look quite the bargain. The photo papers not cheap though and I guess I'm not sure of the post work flow as I can't see myself setting up a darkroom. The image quality though is a huge draw.

I've got a huge amount of respect for people who learnt their trade with film. It would just be exponentially more difficult but I think it actually takes away from the immediacy of photography which to me is its main draw. I've written books and made films and those take years. What I love most with digital is that I can do the shoot in an hour and then edit a photo in 5 minutes while the clients still in the room. There's something about getting things done and out so fast that's really exciting to me. I'd hate waiting for developing.

I learned on film and I think I did a better job when working with film simply because the cost involved meant that I took more time. Granted, I was also using a studio with proper lighting and not just running around the street with a DSLR like I typically do these days, so I had time to think about composition and light and shadow and all that fun stuff. But I think in a studio setting now (which happens often enough for me at work) I'd still take my time with that - BUT given that digital is just so cheap compared to what it used to cost when shooting on film and working in an actual dark room, it had some sort of mental effect on me. I guess I cared more, if that makes sense.

Terrible tatts are The Thing these days so that's actually incredibly hip and now. Glad she didn't have it when we shot OTYDG though. That and the breasts really wouldn't have been period accurate.

You are right though... The colour on the breast is a touch off on my end too. Photobucket has accentuated it by pushing darker and towards magenta but slightly my fuck up.

Terrible tatts are The Thing these days so that's actually incredibly hip and now.

Crikey....really?
Thats pretty sad...

Those finger tatts of hers real too??

It's pretty good! Clients busting my balls over a shoot I'm doing tomorrow so feeling stressed about that but generally its good. Because my gallery page is all just girls in very little clothing that's now all I get hired for. That's typecasting I can handle.

Yeah...bet you are fighting against THAT type of typecasting tooth and nail right matey????:pissed:

Shot a local rock chick today. Weird to shoot someone in clothes. Quite enjoyed it, kind of felt like I was shooting a jeans commercial.

It's simple but it works. How much post are you doing on these shots, Dom? Are you filtering in camera or doing it in Photoshop? You definitely have an eye for glamor.

I do very little in camera. Is it possible to do much in camera? Post depends largely on the shot. That last shot was only about 5 minutes in post and most of that was cleaning up the background which was a crinkled bedsheet. Because she's turned into the light there's no shadows and nothing to clean up.

The red pasties shot immediately before that on this page though is a massive photoshop job. I didn't like the background on that shot so I replaced it. I added a fake flare to justify the overexposure on the hair, heavy airbrushing with the dodge and burn tools and a lot of colour work. That much work is unusual. Generally it's clean up the background, smooth the skin and then play with colour and luminance curves till it looks nice.

Just for comparison here's unedited. You can see it's not had a lot, still looks great but just looks cleaner edited:

I've never been able to do much in camera except to soften the background, but I've known people who could do more than that. Nice job on the rough vs. finished shot - can see the sheet in the bottom corners but outside of that it's well hidden.

Super cool, Ian! I love window displays, etc, offering a view on the world outside/inside.

I've got about 1000 shots that I need to wade through on my last memory card, but this shot, which I took at a recent Civil War re-enactment event, stands out as one of the good 'uns. I'm really pleased with it. Did a little dodging and burning in Lightroom - but the shot is pretty much 'as is'.

I always bring my camera to live shows I produce. Last weekened though I was hosting a show I was losing a small fortune on and in the fit of depression that caused I left my camera at home. Wouldn't you know it, that's the night one of my performers decides to do a striptease with a snake and I miss my chance to capture it on camera. For a shoot like that I'm just an employee. Girls book at the venue for the shoots and they bring in hair and makeup artists and me to make them look good.

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg298/dankfilms/10389227_593041237488906_1343503108713749864_n_zps 6ca53586.jpg (http://s251.photobucket.com/user/dankfilms/media/10389227_593041237488906_1343503108713749864_n_zps 6ca53586.jpg.html)

Pretty much everyone I shoot at something like that is just a civilian and I spend as much time trying to teach them how to model as I do shooting them. Some of them get it. Some of them don't. This one did.

I did a magazine shoot the other day. First time in a little while I've shot with someone who has been there and done that many times before:

Not me. On the same day there was this amazingly gorgeous 19 year old blonde. Absolute physical perfection. She'd been brought by her boyfriend, an unexceptional looking late 30s dude. Turned out he'd bought the shoot without telling her. He'd also bought her a cocktail dres, a sailor suit and a $1500 set of Agent Provacatuer underwear which he wanted her dressed up in and photgrqphed. Fucker was playing Barbies with a real life Barbie... anyway the whole time I'm shooting her he's sitting with the owner of the venue trying to talk her into a threesome. And making decent headway as well I've got to say.

Now that dude is living a charmed life and I've felt like an amatuer at being a Man ever since seeing him in action.

Labor Day weekend myself and 4 friends went on a 2 day,4 state wrestling roadtrip. Two of us started off back in 2012 taking pictures from the crowd. Which has morphed into us now doing video and commentary for 2 indy wrestling groups that run locally. Well I guess we do decent work, cause a week before Labor Day weekend a group out in Arlington TX got in touch with us. Asking if we would come out for their show and film it and do commentary. Then the next day a group that runs Memphis Legends shows asked if the day after the Arlington show if we would come up to a casino in Lula MS and film and do commentary for their show.

Thankfully the other guy has a huge van. So at 8am Friday before Labor Day we piled into the van and drove for 9 hours to TX. Got to see a great show. And I got to meet and hang out with a few indy wrestlers I am a huge fan of. Guys like Joey Ryan and Teddy Hart. Left TX at 1am and drove for 12 hours to get to Lula. Now this Lula show had people like Jerry the King Lawler,Superstar Bill Dundee and Boogie Woogie Jimmy Valiant.

At shows normally I will do commentary for most of the matches. But I always pick 2 or 3 matches off that card that I want to film for myself. The main event was Lawler and Dundee with Boogie Woogie at ringside vs some heel tag team with Hollywood Jimmy at ringside. Fun match. But the casino didn't book enough security. Cause there was over 500 people. Lots of them drunk on the cheap beer. And there was maybe 3 security guards.

Main event is over. Lawler was trying to make his way from the ring to the stage. I walked over to get the following picture.
http://i.imgur.com/jOo5Wf2l.jpg
And I am not sure what I love the most about the picture. Is it the kid that looks like he is handing Jerry a dollar? Or is it how it looks like Jerry is pointing at the security guy's shirt. And telling him "Your shirt says what your job is"

And besides a blurry picture of myself and Tracy Smothers the above pic was the last on my camera.

I like the simplicity of that black background, Dom. One of our students, who shoots a lot of portraits of skateboarders, etc, was saying yesterday how much he's shifting towards a simple black backdrop for his portraits.

Not my most recent memory card, but an image from a card which I shot over the summer when I was asked to cover a 1940s event and shoot some images that can be used to promote the same event next year.

It's something I'm enjoying at the moment. I shoot it gray and that way I can shift it to pretty much any colour, replace it entirely without having to cut it out or else just gamma correct it down to pitch black. I would probably be doing most of my work like your student but unfortunately clients generally want coloured backgrounds. I could happily never shoot another pink background for the rest of my life.

BTW if that backgrounds not full black for anyone let me know. Having horrible colour management issues at my end so really guessing what my shots look like. Have a look at this. The exact same JPEG open in three different programs on the same screen. Which one does the shot actually look like? Who the hell knows...

Have you tried using ColorMunki, Dom? It ain't cheap, but it can help you to self-calibrate your monitor nicely. Then, of course, calibration for print isn't always the same as calibration for display on the Internet (where most of your audience's monitors won't be calibrated and will tend to be much 'cooler').

I don't think colormunki will work for me. I've got a Dell u2713h. Oddly there's only one calibrator that will work with that. Fortunately there's a shop a couple suburbs over that rents them so I'm going to give that a go when I've got time to pick it up. Hopefully that sorts things. At the moment I'm just uploading photos and then checking it on every phone, tablet and monitor I can lay hands on. Gotta say doing this I've realised every display is so different that there seems to be little point in having one that is displaying colours correctly.

Definitely. This is why it's often best to calibrate your monitor for print rather than for web display.

I bloody hate photographs of myself with a passion, because I'm such an ugly fucker.

However, we've got a new manager at work who wants us all to contribute a 'selfie' for display on the wall. She's down wit' da kids, innit.

So I piddled about tonight and took a few self-portraits. This is my favourite, and I absolutely love it - but I don't think I'll get away with it for work! Grrr!

You guys should contribute to this thread more. It's getting lonely in here. This shot was an interesting one for me because I shot the same costume against the same backdrop a couple years ago on my second ever shoot. I was pretty keen to see that I was at least somewhat better with a camera now than I was after I'd only been using one for a couple hours. Happy enough though I wanted more:

Visited my girlfriends folks winery yesterday. Apparently the shots aren't great because I've made the land look dried out. The artist in me though was going for that Sergio Leone western look. First landscape photography, in fact I think my first ever photo edited from an exterior:

Been scanning some negatives lately. I like this shot a lot. Lots of narrative here. My former teaching buddy, a documentary/commercial photographer of 20+ years standing likes it too, which makes me quite chuffed with it:

This is from another roll of film, and seems to be quite popular with people I've shown it to. It's enigmatic, I guess:

Truth told, the water level dropped way down 5-6 feet after the nest was built, so for a couple days I could get pretty close.
I think this is my zoom at max @ 19.5mm...I am a rank amateur shutterbug!

The pair had 6 eggs, 4 hatched and here are the little buggers....for a day or two they hung near shore so I could snap some images, now they stay away from the shore.

Something a bit creepy about that shot Paul...

I was asked to edit a photo in an Gil Elvgren style for a client. I'm pretty happy with the edit job- the original snap not so much but it's fine I guess. It's as much a paint job as a photo at this point. All the skin having been painted in and the background built from wood textures I found online. I wanted it to have a visible brush stroke look. Probably that's not visible once photobucket has had its way with it but it's there.

Few weekends back did a 2 day 2 show wrestling roadtrip. First show just did video and commentary work. Second show did all that plus security work. The above pictured man is Peanut. He goes to any wrestling show in Alabama and really really hates the bad guys.

Big Cat Curtis Hughes,Former WCW/ECW/WWF star, worked the show. There was about 120 people there. With most of them being white. Curtis, who is a black gentleman, came out as a bad guy grabbed the mic and said "Yall are the biggest group of porch monkeys I have seen." For about a minute the crowd sat in silence, then Peanut started yelling. I ran over and filmed what I could.

Oh man, local/regional wrestling stuff is always way more fun than the big leagues. When I lived in Portland I used to go to this dumpy little flea market where they'd setup a ring in the parking lot. There was as midget wrestler there, a Mexican guy with bleach blonde hair, who called himself 'Nasty' and he was amazing.

It ain't always easy being a photographer for hire. Sometimes you get an overweight, 50 year old housewife who comes in and says that she wants to look like Liz Taylor circa 1958 and you know no matter what you do on this day you are screwed and are about to make someone very unhappy. And then sometimes a girl like this walks in and just says "I don't know, just make me look hot". Easy money.

Been working on this edit for the last 4 hours or so. Cutting a glass out from a background and have it still looking like a glass at the end of it is a bitch. Got sore eyes now from staring at the monitor so close.

Motherfuckers! Sorry about all those broken links guys. I've made this thread look terrible now... Photobucket had a change in policy and now the only way to get those pictures back in the thread is to pay $40 a month. Which is extortionate in my book. How do you guys upload your photos? I never liked photobucket anyway...

It's when you start cosplay photography that you realise how out of touch with pop culture you've become. I have no ideas who these characters are except they're called Honey Lemon and Baymax.

Working a bit with 3d models for my composites at the moment. It's definitely the thing that's the next step in improving my work. Also the first image I did working with a Wacom rather than a mouse which I hate. But people tell me is required. It's a touch rougher than usual because of that.

Biggest edit I've ever done. Largely built in 3ds Max before being brought into Photoshop for a final composite. Like with the Catwoman shot, for some reason it's fuzzy when embedded. Looks sharp if you click on it.

Heh, no. He was in the screened-in porch at a house I help watch over when the home owners are away. I don't know how long he'd been stuck in there, he crashed into one of the screens and ripped right through it and couldn't get out! Had to open the door for him from the inside. Was expecting a Hitchcockian scenario but he wasn't aggressive and just flew to the other side of the porch. Gave me quite the jolt this morning though.

Took a week or so off over Xmas but still been busy. The first is something different. I got a new lens and got to try it out taking photos of my niece Agatha outside. I basically never take photos outside so something totally different for me. Not the best photo I got of her photographically speaking but I love the intensity. She looks like a youngling at her first day at the Jedi academy.

Those are all nice but the one of your niece is the coolest because it's just a rad picture of a kid being a kid, you can't pose that.

Yeah, exactly. At that age her comprehension is on about the same level as my cats and, like my cats, she is disinclined to do anything she's told. So I just follow her around with a long lens and hope she steps into a spot with good light.

Cheers Man! Appreciate it. Still a long way to to go but I feel like I'm getting better fast at the moment. By the way if anyone is curious I put this little video on how I put together the B-Movie sci fi image above. I wasn't smart enough to record it as I did it the first time so this is a redo so it doesn't look 100% identical and I skipped over a lot of the 3d stuff because I didn't have the heart to do it again but, hey, it's got a Vampyros Lesbos sexadelic dance party soundtrack so how can you go wrong?

I think this one kicks ass. Getting seriously into 3D and learning half a dozen programs at once. Really makes it so I can just make whatever I have in my head which is hugely liberating after spending so much time just collaging images.

I can't see those first two and not think of Sin City. Cool stuff. The last one is the best of the four though, I think.

Glad you like the last one as it's a new style I'm working on that I'm hoping is going to be where my business is going. I have entire 3 dimensional rooms that are super lush and then the models get to pick where they want to be in the rooms and what they want to be doing and then they get placed and rendered. This is the first render from that concept.

The first 3 were actually from a Sin City special day I ran. It's a really easy style to edit so I figured if I had lots of people through on the same day and they all got their shots in this style I could charge a lot less thanwhat I usually do which I was kind of keen on because there's usually no way to do this for much than a grand and it feels kind of exclusionary. It has backfired on me as most of them have requested their edits in weird places that I don't have models of. Like they want to be lying across a detectives desk. Haven't had the heart to say, "no, you're all standing outside on window ledges and in dark alleys like in all the advertising." So today, and it will take all day, I'm building a detectives office for basically free.

Cheers man! Believe me it's a job that has many downsides as well. Like when you get the late 50s overweight mum who comes in poorly fitting lingerie and says she wants to look like Elizabeth Taylor in her prime. I know neither of us are going to wind up happy. Then there are the days I get given 3 lingerie models who just want to mess around with gun props. Those days are alright though, honestly, one is about as common as the other.
