""Do you want to die?!” seven-year-old Samuel asks his stressed-out single mother, Amelia. But is it a threat or a warning. After dealing with Samuel’s frantic tantrums his entire life, Amelia suspects that her son has begun directing his violent misbehavior toward her. However, after a dark and foreboding children’s book called Mister Babadook mysteriously appears on Samuel’s bookshelf, Amelia must decide if her son is truly deranged, or if there really is a bogeyman lurking in their darkened halls at night. Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman star in The Babadook, written and directed by Jennifer Kent and premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The film is waiting for distribution so there's no release date yet."

I'm pretty intrigued by this. I dig the trailer, and reviews from the festival screenings it's had so far have been very positive.

Saw this last night. Lots of nice ideas but a bit muddled in execution and I wish it had been subtler. Superb sound design. Shouldn't say more until people have seen it, as it would be spoiler-tastic.

Vague news, but...

"The Babadook Facebook page replied to my question regarding US and UK editions.
They say early 2015 but they cant be sure it will be 1080p. "

When I talked to someone at the IFC booth at NYCC last month and asked about a US Blu-ray release they said 'sometime next year.' So maybe that's been updated a bit, haha.

This ones been the subject of quite a bit of debate here recently. There's been a lot of noise on the perrenial question of why no Australian would be caught dead watching an Australian film. Alledgedly this has been quite successful overseas whereas here it opened in 13 cinemas with 4 bucks .50 spent on advertising and was seen by a grand total of 14 aussie cinema goers and a disinterested Jack Russel called Wallace. Certainly I was unaware of it before it was long gone from cinemas and I pay more attention to this sort of thing than most.

Anyway the argument goes that if we can pump out a good Aussie genre film and still no one wants to turn up then what chance do we have? Personally I think everyone involved in the debate has their heads wedged firmly up their arses but one thing they do have right is that this is a pretty decent Aussie genre film.

It's genuinely creepy if you find huanted house films creepy and has a much surer hand at the tiller than any similar films I've seen in the genre for quite some time. It's traditionally filmed but not without a bit of style and flair. Without giving too much away there's a really nice shift here where what appears to be the threat switches from one person to another. Can't really think of another film where that's been done and it's a very welcome touch.

There's a few problems. The Babadook is a very cool design but he's handled with CGI thoroughout which is very jarring giving the understated style of the rest of the film. The minor characters are generally bloody awful and look fresh from a student film set which is a shame given the strength of the central performances. And there's the age old problem of exactly how you wind up a tale like this satisfactorily and this one doesn't have a lot of tricks up it's sleeve on that front but then it's not too shabby either.

Anyway if you like this sort of film I think you'll like this a lot. Shame local distributors didn't get behind it.

From Fangoria: (http://www.fangoria.com/new/you-can-pre-order-the-babadooks-bababook/)

"The creators of the book, BABADOOK writer/director Jennifer Kent and illustrator Alex Juhasz have set up a crowdfunding campaign that essentially acts as pre-order to publish MISTER BABADOOK here (http://thebabadook.com/). Insight Editions is publishing and will go ahead with such once 2000 pre-orders (each at $80 U.S.) have been reached. The creators assure readers: “We are not going to churn out any rubbish here. Oh no. The book we publish is going to be made to the same scale and level of quality as the handmade book in the film… Each book will have a beautiful red fabric hardback cover. And each pop-up image will be printed on beautiful quality paper, hand glued and made to the highest standards. Just like the book in the film.”"

"Shout Factory has revealed that it plans to release on Blu-ray Jennifer Kent's horror thriller The Babadook (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Babadook-Blu-ray/117685/) (2014), starring Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, and Daniel Henshall. The release will be available for purchase on April 14.

Synopsis: Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her 'out of control' 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both.

When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behaviour, is forced to medicate him.

But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.""

Don May said on FB that his Aussie copy of the movie is 1080i/50Hz, the one from Umbrella.

So when this was announced from Shout! I figured, they'll just port the Aussie disc - but now, maybe not.

I'm kind of talking to myself here, carry on.

.

I don't know as much about this stuff as I should so take with the proverbial grain of salt. Babbadook might have been shot at 25p. I don't have anything to back that up besides looking at all the versions that are out there which all seem to be 25 frames. One of the many shitty things about Blu Ray is it doesn't do 25p. Thus the 1080i encode. Maybe.

Do they have to re-encode to fix that 50Hz? I know nothing of these things anymore.

I know embarrassingly little about this as well but audio and video being seperate entities surely you just need to reencode the audio?

So the special edition packaging is kinda neat. It's really just a slipcover that goes over the regular Blu-ray case with cover insert, but it's a nicely texture thick card stock and the pop up book aspect is pretty neat even if it's just one image and not really a book per se. Once people start getting these though, people should be a little careful when opening it. One the one I have it uses two pieces of velcro to hold the pop up book part down. If you were to pull it open too fast I could see someone pulling the glue that holds the pop up part and the regular cover part apart and mucking up the packaging.
