Well, I wailed for a while today and came up with three tracks. A cat on a board I know was taking submissions (1-10 minutes) for a compilation. Anyway, here's the track I sent him. It's shorter (9 mins...haha) and less harsh than I'm used to, but I like it quite a bit. Fun with feedback.

it may be the green talking, I really dug that. I kept playing a movie into in my head throughout. That's some creepy stuff there.

Paul Casey

Why thankee. If you want, I can upload the other two parts of the session. The first part was as above, minus the chorus pedal in the second chain. The third replaced the Boss Metal Zone in the first with a DOD Death Metal. Actually, there are a few more minutes to the track I uploaded, too.

Sometimes I use a roll up keyboard and wail that. I like the distorted horror/sci-fi shit that comes from it. Unfortunately, the roll up keyboard has a limit to how long the note will play whereas a regular keyboard/synth doesn't. When I get a synth, I'll have more directions to explore (under a different hat, though).

Der, the inventor of the guitar is clearly in Hell. Music is the tool of the devil. Why else would the Taliban ban it?

Didn't Clapton write a song about being spit on from Heaven?

The Boss Metal Zone is one of my favourite pedals. That distortion is SO refined.

Paul Casey
12-13-2010, 11:21 AM
Four eqs give you a lot of control...which is nice. I bought a second one 'cause I saw it on eBay for $8 including ac adapter. I had to take advantage of that.

Mark Tolch
12-13-2010, 11:35 AM
I bought mine for quite a bit more than that, though it was still only 40 bucks offa ebay. They're kinda maligned and trashed as shitty pedals, but there's a lot of range as you were saying. Not many pedals give you a midrange sweep to play around with. There are mods for it too, but i think that the modding thing gets out of control sometimes.

Paul Casey

Ok, friends, here's something I'm working with and would like some opinions...not on the tunes, but the recording sound. Up until now, I've been recording straight from my mixer into a little device that has USB out (and some knobs and shit), then to the computer. I was thinking that this may be the cause of my sorta-compressed sound (could just be my shitty shit!). Well, either that or that I'm too loud and the software clips, or both! Anyway, I got some mics on eBay (3 for $12...and they work!) and decided to try mic'ing the amp and going with that approach.
I'm having a hard time with it. They both sound pretty similar to me. Well, non-clip feedback sounds more honest (ugh, what have I become?) on the mic version. Other than the feedback blasts, it stays out of clip range, so maybe that's a plus...though it isn't as loud as I would like. Obviously, this isn't something I'll be able to fix in one session and most likely all sessions will be different (booo...work!). Anyway, I uploaded an mp3 from the mixer and one from the mic. They're not the same track, but they're as close as I could get 'em (sorta). Same simple set up in each.

I know nothing about that stuff, or anything else, but I like the mic version better. Doesn't max out the headphones like the other one.

They both sound like my migraine. I'm tempted to put a jack in my skull and see if I can get a source recording of my own. Terrifying.

I couldn't tell much from craptop speakers, but it looks like there's clipping in the linetest, but not the mictest. I loaded them into audacity to see what the forms looked like, and checked for clipping. The clipping check confirmed a whack of clips in the linetest sample, but found none in the mic.

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg138/barrymba56/linetest.png

Audacity's great for audio editing, and free. Runs on win, mac, linux. There are a bunch of analysis features you might find useful that mean nothing to me (spectrum mapping, etc.)

Oops, clipping stuff was offscreen in that first linetest shot.

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg138/barrymba56/linetest-clipping.png

I have no idea what any of that means, of course.

Paul Casey
05-08-2011, 12:16 AM
I record into Soundforge. I'd post screens, but my waveforms look the same. Clipping aside, is there an audible difference to you guys? Maybe I'll record something a little closer to what I would jam and see how that goes, I guess.

Compare it to my first track:

I'll give the mic'ing some more work. Maybe pick up or build a cheap resistance mixer and do a few mic spots. Would that be overkill/dumb? Dunno.
Guess I just gotta blast around and see what's up.

It was just a three pedal setup tonight, so nothing major. I also think I try to put too much low end into my stuff which muds the fuck out of it when it's straight mixer feed. I just gotta see if it translates mic wise. I'm sure it will, though, with the right mic. Researching that shit, though, is a different story. I used one of these:

Thanks! The low background buzzing in the section you pointed out was something I was trying out. I have a mic'd up metal lunchbox and I was using hair clippers on it.

why do you make songs so long?

I usually wail for a while and then when I have some stuff I like, I record it. What seems like five minutes of playing ends up being seventeen. Since I didn't have a time constraint, I didn't try to make a usable excerpt.

I'm gonna pitch my FAB chorus because its garbage. The Cool Cat is true bypass, has an EQ sweep, and a mix control which let's you retain the original signal....its very cool. I use it for Floyd-y stuff, but I get a kick outta playing shit like One and Nothing Else Matters, too. :-D

There's a weird delay/chorus knob on it. I think the distortion is less fun that the MZ and has less eqs. Finding a good video for it was tough. Oh well, worst case it sucks.

My buddy at work keeps his gear at work (synths, rack mount effects, his Leslie speaker, etc). I mentioned to him that I'm playing a set at my friend's cookout on Sunday (Yeah, go America!), and he told me to take this for the weekend.

http://flyingblanket.com/imglib/Image/effectron(1).jpg

Though, he let me borrow the Effectron II, it looks the same other than the word.

Paul Casey
07-01-2011, 07:56 PM
What does it do?

It's a delay with an Infinite Repeat button and modulation controls. I ran a contact mic as the input, and output from the Effectron to two distortion pedals. It was harsh, swarmy, and fun. You can wail, get the delay in a loop, use the mix control to blend in the source (or go all source), play with the width and speed of the delay, then let it go and keep destroying.
So fuckin' fun.
ED: Oh yeah, the contact mic was feedbackin' like a mofo, too... so fuckin' delightful.

Anyway, I've gotta practice for Sunday tomorrow, so maybe I can get a sample for you.

That sounds totally stupid. Beats help break up the monotony of a long ambient type song. And it can be a totally unorthodox beat. All over the fuggen place like a Lars Ulrich drum solo. Sounds shitty but adds to the experience.
