Being a bit of a closet fan of the late Mr. Rollin I have been wondering...and Mr. Jane may be able to answer in oblique fashion if he's heard anything...does anyone know of any plans for a real (read: decent) distributor getting a hold of his films and releasing them properly?

Sure, Encore had them in Europe, but they were pricy for us regular bums and not so easy to get a hold of. The Redemption editions are, quite honestly, compete and utter shit and a real discredit to the man and his work.

Some loco company needs to wrest Messrs. Rollin's works away from the hands of those bums Redemption/Salvation/hasbeens past their use-by date, and start creating HD masters and releasing the films properly. There needs to be at least a legacy of finely crafted DVD and BD releases in remembrance of the man and his eclectic brand of art-fuelled cinema (rather than the bog-standard shite that we have currently...excepting the Encore releases, of course). Are we all in agreeance?

I haven't heard anything about anyone outside of Redemption doing anything with Rollin's stuff. However, their recent re-releases have been using Encore's transfers adn some of the extras as well, so they're a step up over the ones they put out a few years back under Image.

I'd love to see his stuff on Blu-ray, and I'm 100% positive they'd really and truly benefit from good HD transfers the way a lot of other modestly budget horror movies would not simply because of the attention in the visuals, but I don't think it'll happen any time soon.

I have Redemptions version of The Escapees or whatever it's called. It didn't look fandiddlyastic, but it was a decent transfer....

The big problem is that Redemption bought the rights to the Rollin back catalogue in perpetuity. The only hope is that either someone sub-licenses them (a la Encore) or that Redemption go bust and the rights get sold off to someone who either cares or knows what the fuck they're doing.

...to someone who either cares or knows what the fuck they're doing.

This is my concern exactly. Of all the Rollin films I have on DVD, sadly via the Redemption label, I feel they're solely just rubbish. All interlaced transfers, 1.66 ratio films not 16:9 enhanced, titles and footage missing from some films, and the majority of them are pressed on single-layer discs (ie: cost-cutting) and poorly encoded and authored.

When Redemption were a VHS label and bringing previously unseen Euro-cult to the masses, they were great -- but it's the 21st century now and they just haven't made the transition to the digital age with any finesse, or indeed competency, at all. If they've got the Rollin titles in perpetuity...here's hoping they go bust and the library goes to someone with an ounce of nouse.

Y'know, I corresponded with someone at Salvation a short while back, asking if they were going to a) resubmit any of the Rollins to the BBFC now that policy had changed and b) had any plans to re-release the titles in what could be considered competent editions. The answers I got? No point resubmitting them to BBFC, as it costs money to resubmit and they wouldn't get through unscathed (which is bs), and as to re-releases in "better" version: it costs money to re-release films, make new masters/licence new masters, and the Rollin titles weren't big sellers anyway so they'd just be losing money.

Dear Redemption/Salvation/whoever you are these days: please sell off the Rollin catalogue to a company that actually cares about his work! :nono:

I can see their point to an extent - business is business and you need to make a profit to survive.

That said, the fanbase for his work is, I think, loyal enough that they'd shell out for improved editions. It's pretty much a universal complaint among Rollin fans that they haven't done a good job with his library.

I can see their point to an extent - business is business and you need to make a profit to survive.

This is true...but. You would think that if a company signed up a library in perpetuity that they'd be looking at it as their "golden goose", so it seems slightly defeatist to have done such a thing and then decided to sit on their hands and/or not spend a penny on their acquisition. It's almost exactly like Celestial Pictures (who are obviously MUCH bigger, btw) acquiring the Shaw library, and then saying "Meh, we'll just put them out as is and not worry about dropping a dime on restoring them". Can you imagine what would have happened if that had come to pass? I think the same thing holds true of the Rollin library... :drum:

Ian Jane
02-10-2011, 09:55 AM
Agreed and that was kinda-sorta my point. They haven't done a good job with the films and the fans have been calling them on it - but they don't seem to be upping their game so to speak.

Mike T
02-10-2011, 11:45 AM
Ah, I see...said the blind man...

Kind of makes me wonder what's going to happen next? Being that Salvation haven't exactly put out anything in nearly six months (apart from release notices and schedules that they've failed to deliver on across the board), and Jean's passed on. I wonder, if like with rare art, they think that now he's gone if they sit on them indefinitely (much like RM Films) they might increase in value?

Ian Jane

They did just release Schoolgirl Hitchhikers in December, 2010.

I still don't have it, but should probably get around to it.

Mike T

Awesome news! Tim Lucas just dropped the bombshell, as of this post, on FB that Kino Lorber will be releasing some Rollins on Blu-ray next year! Yay!

Titles mentioned thus far are: The Nude Vampire, Shiver of the Vampires, Lips of Blood, The Iron Rose and Fascination.

Can anyone say "Sploosh!!!"?

Ian Jane
09-16-2011, 09:15 AM
WOW. I didn't see that coming. That's awesome news.

Mike T
09-16-2011, 09:20 AM
Me either! Apparently there's also been talk of Redemption remastering the catalogue in HD as well*. That fact was brought up almost the moment Tim announced this on FB, but has been quietly absent from any significant notice prior. But Redemption can kiss my arse, as they'll probably fuck the whole thing up like they always do with everything and their substandard DVD releases. I'll be waiting on the news whether or not the Kino discs are all region and then I'll be buying the lot if they are... :)

* I guess it's a run-on of that pathetically childish "us versus them" tit-for-tat, UK vs. US distributors thing that Arrow started up.

Ian Jane
09-16-2011, 09:27 AM
Yeah, I'll be more than happy to upgrade on all of those titles. If Redemption does'em up right on their end, and that's a big if given their track record, I'll get those too. A shame Rollin's not around to contribute to extras.

Mike T
09-16-2011, 09:56 AM
If Redemption does'em up right on their end, and that's a big if given their track record...

Yes, got to stand by that one. I find it hard to believe they wouldn't make a fist of it based on their backwards releases on the last decade. I'd like to give Redemption the benefit of the doubt, I really would as in many ways they were a pioneer in getting the whole Euro-cult ball rolling globally. But the endless string of DVD releases that really weren't that much of a step-up from public domain releases in quality makes it hard for me to get excited these days when their name's attached to anything. Maybe they'll surprise us all?

In the interim, I'll be keeping a watch on what Kino is doing with these releases. ;)

Ian Jane
09-16-2011, 10:37 AM
Yeah, either way, I'm excited for these and Lorber has done decent Blu-ray work in the past so hopefully these will continue that trend. I know Rollin isn't everyone's cup of tea and these won't sell like some of the bigger Eurocult titles will (I expect BU's Zombie will do very well) but give me those plastic bats and hokey costumes in 1080p, uncut, and in nice shape and I won't complain if there aren't a lot of supplements given the way the market for this stuff seems to be these days.

Mike T
09-16-2011, 11:03 AM
My latter day Rollin adulation dictates that these will all be "must buys" if they turn out to be region-free (or I've got a region-free BD player by the time they're released).

So Ben Gart just posted this at Latarnia (http://thelatarniaforums.yuku.com/topic/10347/Re-Jean-Rollin-in-HD-from-Kino-Lorber?page=-1). Those screen caps look pretty damn good. I guess it's safe to assume then that the transfers are already finished, at least some are.

My ears were burnin'...someone say my name? :)

Marc Morris has said the Rollins were being redone in HD before the Kino news, so maybe they're working together. I told Don May about it, too, hoping he can put GRAPES OF DEATH out on bd too.

Ian Jane

Fascination just left my Blu-ray player and man oh man... it's still soft in spots as it should be and there's some minor print damage but this is a big improvement over the DVD. Lucas' liner notes are a great read, the Virgins And Vampires Eurotika! special is still awesome and hey, bonus trailers. Oh, and some extended and more explicit sex scenes involving the lovely and talented Ms. Lahaie are on here too.... and in it's all in full HD.

Will try and get to some screen caps later tonight.

Have you seen the XXX version, Suck Me Vampire? I watched it the other night, poor quality VHS rip but there's no other way to get it. It's amazing how much of the story they hacked out and how much sex they put back in. As a porno movie, it's actually not bad, the girls look great and are pretty enthusiastic, but compared to Rollin's original film, well, that's obviously a very different story.

Dave Starry

No, I'm not familiar with that porn edit. I did a quick google search though and it looks like that may be a variation on "Lips of Blood" rather than "Shiver..." (or did I read that incorrectly?).

I didn't realize that Francoise Pascal from Iron Rose had written a book, but sure enough, she has (http://www.amazon.co.uk/As-I-Am-Francoise-Pascal/dp/1903490715/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1327667452&sr=1-1). I don't know how much detail it'll go into on her work with Rollin but she's got a few other interesting credits as well. She also did a Penthouse spread and lived with Richard Johnson for like a decade. It could be an interesting read.

Ian Jane

Kinda sorta Rollin related - watched the BFI Her Private Hell Blu-ray last night and one of the extras on it is a 30 minute short about Penthouse models called Anatomy Of A Pin-Up from the 70s. Ms. Pascal actually shows up in it a few times. I thought that was a little rad, really.

Is Rape Of The Vampire any good? Black and white seems rightfor Rollin.

On another note, why do 70s chicks have such extreme tan lines? Particularly these vampire girls... wouldn't think they'd get much exposure. But really I've never seen that sort of thing on a real woman. The sun must of been really, really hot back in the late 60s/70s.

The best thing about the tan lines is that LES DEMONIAQUES is set at the turn of the century, when everyone wore bikinis.

RAPE OF THE VAMPIRE is good, IMO, although it's pretty disjointed. I prefer the films that immediately followed, but RAPE is solid.

Is Rape Of The Vampire any good? Black and white seems right for Rollin.

I think it's the least successful of the three about to be released, which is probably not surprising given that it was his first feature. That said, if you haven't seen it before and can get over the horrendous packaging, it's got to be worth a purchase. It has the feel of a exotic Saturday morning serial about it, and the black and white photography is really beautiful.

I'd agree. It's his best film but it's definitely interesting. The history behind it is pretty cool too. Lots of great imagery and it is neat to see him working in black and white as he does great things with shadow in the movie.

Just posted this in the Redemption thread but figured it wouldn't hurt to have the Rollin specific info here too:

Anyone watch Demoniacs yet? It's cut a little differently than the last release in that it's got extended footage of Tina (Joelle Couer) playing with herself on the beach while the two leads are raped. It definitely makes an already strange scene even stranger and while it ups the sexual ante a fair bit it also adds a certain perverted darkness to the end. I think it plays better this way. The footage was included as a deleted scene on the Encore disc but it fits well put back into the movie. Given that this was 'mastered from the 35mm negative' I'm going to guess that Rollin intended this to be there all along? Anyway, RAD.

Of the three Blu-rays from this recent batch I'm going to say Rape Of The Vampire benefits the most from the HD upgrade, it looks gorgeous. The other two also benefit and are quite nice looking but I've got a new appreciation for Rape now (quote me out of context on that if you like) thanks to the high def transfer.

I wish Kino had ported over EVERYTHING from the Encore discs but that didn't happen. Still, they look great on my shelf so I don't mind holding onto them and some of the new extras on the Blu's are pretty rad.

Did you watch it yet? I checked it out last night. Decent image quality, a cool still gallery and some trailers for non-XXX Rollin stuff. The movie is about what I expected from a 'Gentil' movie in that it has very little story but it's got nice production values, cool locations and some interesting camera work. Karine Gambier has a small role in it.

Sorry, I just now saw your question. I did check it out. You know, I used to have a bunch of Rollin XXX dupes on VHS and I always wished that there were more available and in better quality. At some point, though, I weeded them out, then later regretted it. Seeing this title now in relatively pristine condition--didn't appreciate the phony new credits--I am officially over Michel Gentil. Give me SCHOOLGIRL HITCHHIKERS and Rollin's PHANTASMES and I am good. Don't even ever need to look at FLY ME THE FRENCH WAY again.

In the early-to-mid 1970s I used to frequent the Gotham Book Mart in midtown NYC. They carried all the theater and film books, and the magazines. My first glimpse of a Rollin film was in a magazine called Midi-Minuet Fantastique (or something like that). Later when I moved to L.A. the Larry Edmonds Bookshop used to sell French cult film magazines. Cinefantastique also printed some short articles with pictorial spreads. All this tantalizing imagery from Rollin's films piqued my imagination, but it would be over twenty years before I was able to see a Rollin film, on Something Weird and Midnight Video vhs. I confess I was disappointed. The films seemed incoherent and obtuse. They didn't make much sense as abstract works, either. Later I started buying the Image and the Redemption DVDs. It was nice to see the upgrade, and the films began to open up a little as story-telling, but I'm still not all that impressed with Rollin as a filmmaker. As a photographer of Gothic and erotic imagery, he delivers very potent work. I decided that his skills as a Gothic erotic photographer were sufficient to double-dip for the handsome Encore boxes. Yet Night of the Hunted, my favorite Rollin film, and Grapes of Death do tell a compelling story.

Now I have to buy the Rollin films over again on Blu-ray. I can't seem to stop myself. But are the Blu-ray transfers any better than the DVD transfers? Should I buy the Blu-rays? Is there any such thing as a definitive version or a definitive transfer of a Rollin film? Do I need more than one edition of each title to keep up with the supplements?

From Redemption:

"Major SNAFU or instant collector's item? You be the judge. The initial Blu-ray run of Jean Rollin's TWO ORPHAN VAMPIRES included a printer error that caused the banner "Redemption" to disappear from across the top of the box. The problem has since been corrected, but approx. 600 of these misprint boxes were released into the marketplace. If you received one of these boxes, Kino Lorber will provide you with a new paper insert (contact: contact@kinolorber.com for details).

Because these primarily went out to people who pre-ordered the film, it serves as a badge of honor, indicating who the true diehard Rollin fans are. Wear it with pride."

I love these Redemption Blu-rays and I've been buying many of them, but am I the only one who thinks they use too much DNR on their Jean Rollin titles? I usually see nothing but praise for the Rollin transfers, and no mention of DNR at all, but it is quite obvious to me that they're using it. Yes, the resolution is still better than DVD, but there's hardly any grain, except in certain shots that are too darkly lit to remove it without sacrificing a great deal of the image clarity. Also these transfers are way too dark at times, the blacks are often crushed, which means more detail is lost, especially compared to the Encore discs which are brighter and have much a warmer color scheme.

That said, the non-Rollin films and Zombie Lake do not seem to have these issues, and I have a theory about this. I think that because Redemption owns all of the Rollin films except for Zombie Lake, which is licensed by Eurocine, they do the transfers themselves and can do whatever they want to them. But for the Eurocine titles, like Zombie Lake and Exorcism, they have to use what is given to them, which explains why these titles are beautifully grainy. I actually think Exorcism looks better than any of the Rollin titles despite the poor condition of the print. I don't own Zombie Lake yet, but judging from the screenshots, it looks surprisingly stunning.

Maybe I'm wrong about my theory, I don't know what goes on at Kino/Redemption, all I know is they use DNR and nobody's talking about it. Thoughts?

Ian Jane
04-05-2013, 09:18 AM
Thoughts?

I'm not seeing any DNR on any of the Rollin titles so far that Kino/Redemption have released.

In fact, I'm fairly certain that all of the the transfers in the line are just done 'as is' without any digital manipulation, restoration or color correction work being done to them.

Ryan Clark
04-05-2013, 05:57 PM
I have to disagree. There is hardly any grain at all visible in the Rollin transfers, except for a couple of shots here and there, and the image is too smooth. I'm not saying they don't look good; at times the transfers are very impressive, but I do think there was manipulation, especially on day for night scenes. Sometimes I think that Rollin fans are just so happy to have his films on Blu-ray that they are making the transfers seem better than they actually are. If films by a more mainstream filmmaker got the same treatment, people would be bickering about it more.

Anyway, all you have to do is compare the screenshots for Zombie Lake to screenshots from any of the other Rollin films to see what I mean. Zombie Lake is sharper, because the grain was left intact.

Scott MacDonald
04-05-2013, 09:33 PM
I have to agree with Ian, I see a nice amount of film grain on these transfers increased detail and nothing that would give me any indication DNR was applied.

bgart13

Ryan Clark
04-06-2013, 01:26 AM
Give me examples of grain in those transfers, aside from the couple of instances I mentioned of certain dark shots with lots of grain.

I have a lot of Blu-rays and I do not see anywhere near the amount of beautiful grain that is visible in I'd say about 95% of the discs I own.

The transfers mostly look fine despite this lack of grain but they are not as detailed as I think they should be. Unless I got faulty discs, I'm not sure why people aren't seeing what I'm seeing.

Look at this shot (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-ray_reviews56/lips_of_blood_blu-ray_/large/large_lips_of_blood_blu-ray_05.jpg). I know it's a screenshot and they always look better on a TV, but there should be fine grain visible in that shot and I see none. This is also an example of a day for night shot that's too dark, the blacks are crushed which loses more detail. The previous discs were not this dark. You can't even see their eyes! Despite the fact that the original Redemption disc forgot the day for night filter entirely, I think it looks far more detailed, though of course the lower DVD resolution automatically makes it inferior.

Ryan Clark
04-06-2013, 01:38 AM
Here's another example. Check out this screenshot (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-ray_reviews56/lips_of_blood_blu-ray_/large/large_lips_of_blood_blu-ray_06.jpg) from the Blu-ray and this screenshot (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-ray_reviews55/lips_of_blood_blu-ray_/lips_of_blood_image_dvd_01-21-57_cap07.jpg) from the original Redemption disc. All of the grain from the original disc is gone, and you almost can't even see the bark on the tree because it is so dark. You can't deny more details are visible on the DVD.

Ignatius
04-06-2013, 09:36 AM
I'm not entirely sure of DVDBeaver's capture methodology but their Blu-Ray caps tend to be rather unrepresentative of the disc in motion. They also don't support hot-linking.

As far as the disappearance of grain goes, I don't know what print sources Redemption were using for their original DVDs but the Blu-Ray transfers are purportedly taken from the negative which would naturally have far less grain. The original DVD transfers also tended to be quite old and suffered from sub-standard authoring. The loss of detail in the tree is significant, but appears to be entirely due to the darker colour timing, not any grain reduction. You can certainly argue whether the colour timing is accurate to the original intentions but that's another issue altogether.

The Beaver caps do look rather smooth but I can certainly see some fine grain, and in my experience Beaver's Blu-Ray caps always tend to look unnaturally smooth. Blu-Ray.com has a cap of the same scene (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=31879&position=4) and even resized to 720p it appears to have plenty of fine grain.

In any case, setting caps aside, I haven't seen anything unnatural looking in my own brief perusal of my discs. When I sit down to watch them properly I'll certainly keep an eye out for anything that looks off. It just seems baffling to me that Kino would bother doing a noise-removal pass without doing a basic dirt-removal pass as well. Still, stranger things have happened.

Ian Jane
04-06-2013, 11:32 AM
Yeah, those DVD Beaver links go to the main page. Regardless, do a search here for 'rollin redemption blu-ray' and you'll see screen caps from every one of the discs that have been released so far. I'm not seeing DNR in any of those caps. Like Ignatius said, there are definitely differences in the color timing but nothing that looks smeary or devoid of detail. Some of Rollin's stuff can look soft, but that's not the same thing. I feel the same way about the non-Rollin titles in the Redemption/Jezebel line too.

Ryan Clark
04-06-2013, 06:28 PM
Oh, I'm sorry, the links worked for me. I don't see any grain in the corresponding Blu-ray.com screenshot either, and I actually think some of Blu-ray.com's screenshots are wonky and have compression artifacts in them.

As for the non-Rollin titles, as I said, Zombie Lake seems to have a nice example of healthy grain and I was impressed by Exorcism despite the patchwork quality of the transfer. Hatchet for the Honeymoon looked very good as well. All of these, to me, are better-looking than the core Rollin titles.

Anyway, here's a perfect example (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/dvdreviews38/the_living_dead_girl.htm) of what I mean about the color timing. Scroll down to the screenshot of the lady holding the camera and you'll see that the rust is clearly visible in the two DVD screenshots, but on the Blu-ray it is solid black. This does not look right to me. It also appears to be a bright sunny day and they made it look too dark on the Blu-ray. And in the shot of Francoise Blanchard standing in front of the brick wall, you can hardly even see the bricks in the background and the flame is very faint! The Living Dead Girl is probably the darkest of all the Blu-ray transfers so far.

The Redemption label will release on Blu-ray cult director Jean Rollin's The Escapees a.k.a. Les paumées du petit matin (1981), starring Brigitte Lahaie, Laurence Dubas, Christiane Coppé, and Marianne Valiot. The release will be available for purchase on May 26.

Synopsis: Jean Rollin's The Escapees revisits the director's fascination with pairs of women who wander, dreamlike, through a modern dystopia (Requiem for a Vampire, Two Orphan Vampires). Two female patients one rebellious (Laurence Dubas), the other despondent (Christiane Coppé) flee the grounds of a mental hospital and drift across the French countryside. After finding refuge among a band of gypsy-like exotic dancers, they cross paths with a petty criminal (Marianne Valiot), an aging fortune-teller (Louise Dhour) and a quartet of swingers (including Brigitte Lahaie) with sinister intentions. Punctuated by moments of unexpected violence and lyrical beauty (as when the emotionless Marie returns to life in a vacant ice rink), The Escapees is among Rollin's most personal films, and has been remastered in HD from the original 35mm negative.

Special Features/Technical Specs:

They had it under contract but Rollin withdrew it before he died for some reason. My best guess as to why is that he probably regretted doing it but then again its the only one of his hardcores that he actually signed with his own name.

A good while ago, I am sure that Redemption/Kino mentioned that Phantasmes and the uncut version of Franco's Female Vampire we possibly going to be issued on a different label owned by Kino as they did not wish to put out anything with XXX footage onto the Kino label. (I think this was the uncut Female Vampire with the blow job sequence, not the XXX inserts version, though for the sake of completion, both would be good). I think Phantasmes was due to be part of this, but I also seem to remember that the rights to Phantasmes may not have been held by Redemption/Kino.

A nice version of the XXX version of Lips of Blood would be nice too. I've seen a really rough copy and its certainly an inferior version of the movie, but as part of the history of the movie, I think its a valid version that would be nice to have. I know Rollin did not like it, but sometimes that makes the background even more interesting.

I have no references for any of this information, only that I know its come up before. If I my memory is not entirely accurate, I apologise.

Not excited. I already own the region free Redemption releases, just think they look great. And yes its Shiver of the Vampires.

There's only 3 Rollin films I genuinely like:

Fascination

Night of the Hunted (a lot of people hate this one, but I found it really interesting and it achieves a strange almost Lynchian tone)

and Living Dead Girl

None of the other vamp flicks did anything for me. I keep meaning to give Grapes of Death a 2nd/3rd chance. Did Rollin ever talk about Georges Bataile at all? I always found that aspect of his life fascinating as I'm a particular fan of Bataille's.

I'll wait for more info on the image quality but I'm tempted. Rollin's one of my favorite filmmakers and if these get new scans that are noticably better than the Redemption releases, I might bite.

I have only seen caps of SHIVER but I am not a fan, flesh tones look weird and I prefer the Redemption in most caps.
Redemption is darker and there are more details visible in the Wicked, but it looks very unnatural to my eye.
Too brown & too bright.

I definitely prefer Wicked's transfer. I have my reasons. The best way I can describe it is that the film has an otherworldly feel and Wicked have created a transfer with colours and texture akin to looking at an old aged oil painting from a previous century. That's the kind of vibe I get from the transfer and it works for me, specifically on Shiver of the Vampires. I don't necessarily want the skintones to look natural in this case.

Wish some company would put out La Nuit Des Horloges on bluray eventually, to me it's right there with his better films - just a pure nostalgia ride through the Rollin(uni)verse.

To me Rollins best movies are between 1970-74 (not including Schoolgirl Hitchhikers ^_^ ) + La Nuit Des Horloges and quiet possibly Night of the Hunted

I love Night of the Hunted, and for some reason it is considered to be one of his worst films in books I have read, I don't get it, it was the first Rollin films I ever saw, and it was the film that made me realize the guy was a genius, I mean he was working with porn actresses, and with no budget and he created a masterpiece if you ask me, that's not easy to do under those circumstances. I think that movie is so touching, and the ending is burned into my brain, I can never forget it.

Seems kinda odd to me, but I don't doubt it at all. Killing Car, Sidewalks of Bangkok and Schoolgirl Hitchhikers are to me his films that I don't enjoy but it's the kind of films that are hard to take a stab on because they appear to be quick jobs

Would be about time and great news if Wicked Vision is indeed preparing La Nuit Des Horloges

Watched Wicked-Visions release of Requiem for a vampire tonight and it looks awesome, which makes me happy as its one of my favourite Rollin films and also vampire films.

One thing always troubles me about this film though is Rollins constant switch from day to night shots and vice versa. Its like some scenes have a day for night filter, then its forgotten in the next scene. This has nothing to do with Wickeds transfer as as far as I'm aware its inherent in all releases that I have seen.

I'd definitely for sure like to see a decent copy of Phantasmes, a nice Blu-ray of Bacchanales sexuelles would be appreciated too. It would even be nice to be able to get hold of watchable copies of some of his XXX stuff, even though some may say it's not watchable in any form, I'd still be interested.

Earlier I watched Le parfum de Mathilde (1994), the last XXX film Rollin did. He's only credited with writing the script but he co-directed it along with Marc Dorcel. Something tells me Dorcel handled all the sex while Rollin did all the heavy lifting elsewhere because his fingerprints are all over it. There's a gothic castle setting, a perverted voyeuristic midget and the last 10 minutes are pure Rollin fantastique and even recalls The Nude Vampire somewhat. To anyone who hasn't seen it, imagine Rebecca if written by the Marquis de Sade. There's no sadism (save for an appearance of a whip at the very end), but the general idea of an innocent dragged into a mansion of total depravity is total Sade and of course Rollin's Phantasmes does spring to mind as well. Draghixa is the lead, though she has a tendency to disappear for stretches of time and this might sound funny, but if anyone ever doubted a porn stars ability to portray a frigid woman, Draghixa does it here. For my money though, Julia Chanel outshines everyone else. Hottest French maid ever?

I guess Vivid put this out on VHS in the 90's as The Scent of Matilda. I got the Marc Dorcel Production's DVD which is dubbed but has quite a few subtitle options. Obviously its a shot on video feature so it probably looks as good as its going to get, which isn't at all terrible. The more stylized scenes looks great.

I had no idea Rollin had a hand in this. Some of the older Marc Dorcel films are ok. A tad too brightly lit though. This predates modern Morc Dorcel films which seem now to be various versions of Business men in suits in Fifty shades type scenarios. At least this as well as some of the others from the period or before had some imagination.

There's some more info here (http://requiemforjeanrollin.blogspot.com.tr/2010/07/hidden-cinema-of-jean-rollin-scent-of.html).

Initially just brought on board by French producer Marc Dorcel (who was looking for an experienced director to take the place of the his in-house auteur Michele Ricaud, who had just recently passed away) as a screen writer, Jean would end up co-directing the made for video title as well. He would tell Peter Blumenstock in Virgins and Vampires and in the pages of Video Watchdog that he had indeed, "co-directed the film, though only Dorcel is credited." Rollin would also admit to Blumenstock that he wasn't, "too sad about it", as he would ultimately come to view the final product as just a "typical" adult title and, "not a good film at all", despite his initial ambitious intentions.

Dear Visionaries,

On March 16 we'll be releasing THE IRON ROSE as the No. 6 of our Jean Rollin-Collection.

Is it possible for a burial ground to be a place of morbid romance, where a young couple makes love to each other? Everything is possible in the world of Jean Rollin, and France's cult-filmmaker manages to show a cemetary's romantic side, mixing gothic romance with a dash of poetry and erotica.

Not seen it but apparently it's the deleted sex scene which other discs have as an extra. Supposedly it was actually in the film itself in the materials they received rather than them having spliced it back in.

I double dipped on Shiver partially as it has the German soft porn version as a curio (not that Rollin was involved in the extra scenes). It's a classy package, but I'm not planning on upgrading all of them (I would if I had the spare cash and there weren't dozens of other discs that I want). I'm happy with the Redemption versions, but would be happier with these.

Am I correct in thinking that Redemption has worldwide rights to all of his movies? I'd really like to see the pornos getting released, but I don't know if he was just a hired hand on these or if they're owned by Redemption. Kino wouldn't touch them, but they'd be perfect for a more adventurous distributor.

DEMONIAQUES arrived today and I just had time to take a very quick look at it. Picture seemed a little dark, but I found the color more satisfying than the Redemption disc (which ran toward pinkish-beige, or something.) Special features were mostly ported over from the Encore DVDs, I think.

Coicidentally, I watched this for the first time earlier today, in a dubbed, 68 minute, borderline-incomprehensible version. There’s some beautiful imagery there though - pure Rollin. I'm with you on that. Through Redemption I have a nearly complete collection of Rollin on DVD and I really, really want them to release the rest. Synapse did a pretty good job with their Rollin release, I wouldn't mind them getting Phantasmes and putting it out.

OK, so here are some more shallow observations:

SHIVER OF THE VAMPIRES. The color IS a bit wonky, but it's serviceable. The Wicked Vision disc "corrects" a couple of things I hated about the Redemption disc. 1) It is brighter. Almost all of the Redemption discs seemed too dark, SHIVER in particular. 2) The Redemption disc has a bad audio drop during a nice piece of music (early in the film when Dominique leads Sandra Julien out of the castle.) WV version does not have this. It has as an extra (I think) the same softcore scenes as the Encore DVD. These scenes are so odd, in part because some of them appear in the old Something Weird VHS release, "Thrill of the Vampire," while others do not. Also some of the softcore scenes in "Thrill" are NOT present here. So there were additional softcore scenes shot beyond those on the WV and Encore presentations.

REQUIEM FOR A VAMPIRE. This was the only one of the three purchases that seemed like a waste of money. The color is great and this might slightly trump the Redemption release. However, the negative for this film has been missing a few frames for a while now. Somehow the Redemption Blu-ray version did a fantastic job of compensating for this. (Their old Image DVD had black slugs inserted to fill the void.) The WV version double-prints a few frames instead, resulting in an ugly, stuttering effect in a few places. Bummer.

DEMONIACS. The WV release has a much more pleasing color palette. The Redemption version had weird flesh-tones unique to that release. Sadly, the last reel of the WV disc is particularly yellow in its tinting. I assume all of these anomalies are due to trying to compensate for a faded negative.

I am curious about WV's releases of THE NUDE VAMPIRE and THE IRON ROSE. The Redemption releases of both left room for improvement. In the case of NUDE VAMPIRE, what really stuck out for me was how shitty the French language track sounded. (The English track sounded just fine.) When I first obtained the Redemption version, I was moved to compare it to previous DVD releases and noticed that they also had the problem (which from memory I would characterize as harshness or perhaps sibilance) but it was not as obvious. I assume it is baked into the elements and perhaps always was. Would love to know if WV's release is somehow better in this regard.

Thanks Marshall, sounds like Shiver is worth double dipping on but maybe not on the other two, at least for me.

I've been buying the Wicked Vision Rollins as they have been coming along. Generally speaking they are more cleaned up of specks and dirt and as mentioned some have a slightly different colour timing. It is also worth noting that the WV releases are 2k scans. As far as the NUDE VAMPIRE and IRON ROSE, in my opinion the latter looks the best and is superior to Redemptions. Howvere none are a major leap as Redemption did an admirable job in the first place. Fascination has been scheduled for a while now, but as yet no dates, will probably pick that up too.

My biggest gripe about Redemption's IRON ROSE release was that in several instances, the first frame of a given shot will be distorted, with the bottom portion of the image bent off to the side. It's distracting, but I'm also not a huge fan of that film, so I may just soldier on as-is.

So Redemption just plugged this on Twitter:

"New Redemption release, Jean Rollin's Grapes of Death, created from a new HD master taken from the original negative. OUT NOW!"

https://www.salvation-films.com/full-shop-with-sidebar/the-grapes-of-death-les-raisins-de-la-mort/

Looks like this is DVD only - did they really do a new HD master on this and put it out as DVD only? Or is this just the same transfer used for the older Blu-ray release re-released on DVD?

I'm confused.

In the UK they've licenced the Blu Rays to Screenbound but seem to have held on to the DVD rights themselves for some reason. It does seem a bit odd.

As Full Moon has been releasing Franco and Rollin DVDs of transfers on BD in Europe, I figured it was Charles Band planning on getting fans in the US to double dip. They buy the DVD then a couple years later he'd release them on BD to get fans a second time. When Band is involved my mind immediately goes to shady sales tactics. I wonder if that's Redemption's plan as well.

As Eurohorror pioneer Jean Rollin (Requiem for a Vampire, The Iron Rose) approached the sunset of his career, he distilled the dreamlike images and themes of his work into films that were deeply personal and unapologetically cryptic. Dracula’s Fiancee stars Jacques Regis as a vampire hunter whose pursuit of the descendants of Count Dracula leads him to a convent (The Order of the White Virgins), where supernatural beings of a parallel world are unleashed, including a bloodthirsty ogress (Magalie Aguado), a wolf-woman (Brigitte Lahaie, Fascination), and a young woman who is being prepared as Dracula’s bride (Cyrille Iste). Also included is Lost in New York, perhaps the most dreamlike of Rollin’s “sister” films, a modern-day Alice in Wonderland in which two siblings explore the wastelands of Manhattan.

I'm wondering if there's any connection between the main feature and the bonus short film or if it was just an easy way to combine both.

Not as far as I can remember. Neither are exactly prime Rollin, and Lost in New York would have been a very hard sell on its own given its runtime.

Le masque de la Méduse was, sadly,to be Jean Rollin s last film and was, strangely, very similar to his first, Le Viol du Vampire (1968), in that both were filmed as short features and then returned to by Rollin who filmed additional material to make an extension to the original film. Masque reinvents the legend with Medusa alive in the modern world, her memory gone she wonders from place to place and ends up at The Théatre du Grand-Guignol,the source of much inspration for Rollin in real-life. Here the film, fittingly perhaps, is part theatre and part cinema, but all Rollin. Surreal, dreamy, macabre, erotic and beautiful it is a fittingly creative end for one of cinema s most original directors. Extras: Stills gallery, original trailer, Salvation trailers, interview with Jean Rollin by Dr Patricia MacCormack, Jean Rollin documentary Vampires and Virgins.

Phhantasmes is his arty (albeit the first 10 mins before everyone ends up in a castle) porno horror & I highly doubt Redemption would release it since they've NOT released any porn otherwise Female Vampire & a couple of other Jess Franco films they released would include the porn versions.

Afraid not, though Nigel Wingrove also said around the same time that the rights to Medusa and La nuit des horloges were a tangled mess and seeing as Medusa is soon to be released, fingers crossed that Horloges is coming at some point down the line.

Has anyone heard any news about the Mask of Medusa DVD or know of anyone who got one? My Amazon UK pre-order never shipped, the page for it says "Usually dispatched in 1 to 2 months", it's not in the shop on salvation-films.com, and the catalog on the same site has it listed but without a price. I assume it's been delayed or Amazon had the wrong release date but when I emailed Redemption/Salvation to find out they never responded.

There's no entry for it in the BBFC database which would be a prerequisite for a UK release, so I guess it's still a way off.

Bachanalles Sexuelles on 4K UHD?? Hell Yes, I will definitely pick that one up, please release that on 4K. I will get raped on the price and shipping from France, but I love that movie, and will buy it, unless they just put some ridiculous price on it, but I looked at their website and I think they are not bad prices on all their DVD's and Blu Ray's. The first Rollin film on 4K, if that happens, 4K is officially a viable format, without any Franco or Rollin on 4K it was just this stupid ass format, that was not for real people, it was for the brain dead, I have a 4K TV, and 4k blu ray player, and there isn't shit on 4K to buy. Until now? hope the 4K release works out.

Tim Lucas wrote a very nice booklet for the Redemption blu-ray of Grapes of Death. He states that a Martine Delva was meant to play the lead in Night of the Hunted, but shortly before shooting began she was in a car accident that led to her eventual death. I have been unable to find a picture of Delva or indeed any other information about her apart from this connection to Rollin. Does anyone have any further information?
