Had a couple photoshoots for publications. The first was a while ago but I just got the book itself quite recently. The job was to do all the original photography for a vintage fashion book.

It turned into the only really unpleasant photography experience I've had so far. Without going into details suffice to say, I was not treated with the respect and reverance I consider my due. I got fired in the end when the publisher asked me to photoshop all the tattoos off the model they had chosen. As there were over 40 images of this model alone in the book I told them that, all things considered, it would be a lot less work to just do the shoot again with a Cieanskin. I offered to do that for free but it didn't go down well. Actually think that may be the first time in my life I've been shitcanned... So I didn't get to do the edits and whoever they got to do it did a dud job so not real happy with the book. The original photos were pretty keen though this seems to be the only one I still have:

More recently I got to do photography for a pin up mag and had an altogether more pleasant experience. I got the cover and the main interview:

Minor publications I suppose still is cool to have thousands of hard copies of your work out there in the Public Domain. Hopefully get a few more gigs this year.

Nice work Dom and, like you said, you have solid hard copies of your work that has been published. Another bonus!

Dont worry about being shitcanned...some gigs are just not worth the effort and its good experience for next time..You will be able to spot the ship sinking and jump out before you get fired!!:up:

The author choose the model. Looking back I'm not sure if the publishers knew that though. They might have thought that was my fault... What the author was doing selecting a pretty heavily tattooed model when she wanted clean photos though is a mystery. A lot of the outfits were see through, chiffonny things and judging from the photos in the book even a pro-retoucher wasn't up to the task. But a lot of strange things happened on that shoot. I never got an explanation for any of them because I'm not sure I can front up in person and ask the author what was going on without going for her throat.

I've had a few images published in magazines. I'm putting together a couple of series of documentary images for a small publisher at the moment - but amidst everything else, it's hard to find the time to do this properly.

It seemed a bit ad hoc but you'd think Random House would know what they're doing. Anyway it's a cool looking book even if the photos are a bit embarrassing.


I'm putting together a couple of series of documentary images for a small publisher at the moment - but amidst everything else, it's hard to find the time to do this properly.

Are these the images on your website? I've been meaning to go out after dark and take some landscape/documentary stuff myself but it doesn't get dark till about 9:30 in summer and I'm knackered by then. Hope to do some soon though.

Those are slick and wonderfully curvy! How much post do you do on this stuff (or Photoshop work) vs. in camera? The lighting is really nice in these.

Lots of photoshop on all of these. I'm playing around with coloured lights at the moment but I'm actually finding that painting the light onto the picture in photoshop is actually better and I did a fair bit of that here. It's really fun and easy to do. You create a new layer over the top of your image, paint onto it the colour you want, set the blend mode to soft over the original image and it just tones everything in the colours you painted with. If you paint in in black and white its like Dodging and Burning but with a lot more control.

Interesting. I've been doing a bit of that at work for product photography, but never tried it on a picture of a human before!

I'm surprised at that! I would have thought that Random House and its employees would have more expertise and sense than to demand a model with tattoos be used for a significant number of images within a project and then demand that those tattoos be removed in post-production. I know a few teaching colleagues, former commercial photographers, who would have spat out their dummy and taken their toys home if something like that was pulled on them during a commission.

Are these the images on your website?
Some of them, but mostly not. They'll only end up in a small pamphlet sized art book - nothing fancy-pants. But it's another way to share them. It's just finding the time to do that on top of everything else that must be done in order to pay the bills (ie, the day job and other commitments).

I'm not sure actually. I was just hired that day and was given pretty clear instructions on what to do. Model says she didn't submit it either so I don't know how they got it but, frankly, I'm inexperienced enough that I just get thrilled to see my stuff in print so wont follow it up. Particularly for a free magazine.
