Impulse Films has recently inked a deal to bring to North American DVD shores a whole slew of Nikkatsu Roman Porno titles and to get your mouths, or any other part you care to name, watering they're previewing the line with this Nikkatsu Roman Porno Trailer Collection. At just over an hour in length, this disc contains previews for over thirty titles from the infamous studio's adult film line. Launched in 1971 in an effort to revive dwindling theater ticket sales, the Roman Porno films weren't just a collection of sexy, kinky movies meant for the Japanese raincoat crowd. Much like the American adult film scene of the seventies, they proved to be a training ground for a lot of remarkably talented filmmakers, many of whom would cut their teeth on material like this before moving on to more mainstream efforts.

How does it all shape up? Well, a lot of the amusement from a disc like this comes from the titles of the movies themselves. The obvious headscratcher of the bunch is Nurses' Dormitory: Assy Fingers, a title which tends to send the imagination reeling, but there are others - Pearl Divers: Tight Shellfish makes you wonder why a shellfish's tightness factor is even a consideration and Coed Report: Yoko's White Breasts makes you wonder if maybe Yoko's breasts were a different color before this report was filed. When you've got as creative a selection of titles as what's been provided here it would be easy for the content to not live up to the hype. Without seeing the movies in their full length form, that's still up in the air but the trailers definitely deliver.
Of course, it's a trailer's job to sell a prospective viewer on a film so you're sure to see highlights during each one of these two minute promo spots but if the films are half as good as their trailers make them out to be then fans of Japanese smut have got a lot to look forward to from Impulse in the coming months. Each trailer is its own unique showcase of sex and violence, degradation and kink, fetishism and taboo busting balls to the wall depravity and it's tough not to salivate just a little bit about the prospect of seeing the full films themselves, and sooner rather than later.
School girls, gang rape, scuba diving, urination, nurse fetishism, hot for teacher antics, rape, rape and more rape, rope play, rape play, rape and rope play, and weird office and housewife worship all come to the forefront here and while some trailers are more interesting than others, there's really not a bad one in the bunch. There is very definitely an art to cutting trailers like the ones you see here that seems to have been lost in modern times. The sensationalism and penchant for showing all your cards in one fell swoop is rather charming, while the over the top narration (which somehow sounds more important in Japanese than it could have ever sounded in English) is the icing on the cake.
Video/Audio/Extras:
Synapse presents almost everything in a 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio, which is a nice touch - and everything is encoded in such a way that the trailers do appear in their original aspect ratios, so expect things to shift to wider formats here and there. The picture quality is generally very good. There's some grain here and there and a few nicks and scratches if you want to look for them but detail is strong, black levels are nice and deep and color reproduction is quite good. With so much rampant nudity on display here, it's important that skin tones look natural and they do - there's really nothing to complain about, this looks considerably better than most trailer compilations on the market.
The Japanese language Dolby Digital Mono track provided on the disc sounds pretty good. If you speak Japanese then you won't have any problems understanding the various narrators of the bits and pieces of footage spliced into this collection, and if you don't, the removable English subtitles are clean, clear and easy to read.
Aside from the trailers, which you can watch individually or through a 'play all' feature, the disc includes a bonus half hour short film called Ryoko's Lesbian Fight in which two stewardesses leave their flight only to later wind up in an impromptu sex session which is briefly interrupted when one of the girl's boyfriends shows up. Lucky bastard. It's not deep, but it's entertaining and plenty steamy.
Inside the keepcase is a booklet of liner notes from Jasper Sharp, author of Fab Press' essential Behind The Pink Curtain tome on Japanese sex films. Sharp's essay gives a quick history of Nikkatsu, of Roman Porno films in general, and notes some of the more important titles.
The Final Word:
As a primer of the releases to come, this disc is quite a cock tease. Chock full of sex, violence, degradation, rope play and sexy chicks galore, Impulse's Nikkatsu Roman Porno Trailer Collection is a pretty fantastic collection of promos bound, pun intended, to please anyone looking for a quick and easy Japanese sleaze fix.
