  • Cocked And Loaded: An Interview with Tommy Pistol

The world of pornography has changed a lot in the last three years or so. Call it alt. porn, call it punk porn, it really doesn't matter. The fact is, there's a sort of grass roots thing going on with smaller and more interesting independent studios crawling out of the woodwork and one of the more interesting (and fun) is Burning Angel. Founded by Joanna Angel, who has since signed with VCA and hit the big time, these crazy kids from NYC started as an internet only deal until things took off and you can now find their unique brand of smut at fine XXX retailers around the country.

While you obviously can't sell the female talent short, being as the ladies are the prime reason that most of us are into smut in the first place, once in a while a unique male talent comes along who earns a following all his own. Jamie Gillis is a good example from years past as he always brought something special to his work, be it a boner, an enema kit, or a penchant for pooping - Burning Angel has Tommy Pistol, star of the recent horror spoof, The XXXorcist.
Tommy, an avid movie buff himself, took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with DVD Maniacs about his work and his career and the results are printed here, unedited and in Tommy's own words.

IJ - Let's start from the beginning. What did you do before you had sex with hot women on camera for a living? Do you have any prior acting experience at all?

TS - I DID SKETCH COMEDY FOR ELEVEN YEARS WITH A GROUP CALLED CHEESE THEATER AND, WELL, I JERKED IT IN FRONT OF A MIRROR FOR ABOUT 28 YEARS.

IJ - Nice. Did you always want to be a porn star or did you just sort of fall into it? How did you get into the adult film industry?

TP - WHAT GUY DOESN'T WANT TO BE IN PORN? BUT YES, I DID FALL INTO IT. A FRIEND, THE DIRECTOR OF XXXORCIST ACTUALLY, HOOKED ME UP WITH JOANNA ANGEL AND I GUESS YOU COULD SAY I FELL INTO, ER, "HER".

IJ - In the liner notes for Burning Angel: The Movie, Joanna Angel says about you that “his terrible sense of humor was kind of a turn off.” With that said, you were the first man to have sex with her on camera - how did you two hook up in the first place?

TP - HUH, I'VE NEVER HEARD THAT STORY BEFORE. I'M KIND OF INSULTED. JOANNA HAD BEEN WORKING WITH A PRODUCTION COMPANY CALLED BACKSEAT CONCEPTIONS AND NAMES GOT PASSED BACK AND FORTH.

YOU KNOW HOW THESE THINGS WORK. ONE GUY SEES ANOTHER GUY'S WEE AND SAYS "DUDE, I KNOW THIS CHICK WITH BIG TITS, YOU GUYS SHOULD MAKE A PORNO TOGETHER." JUST YOUR RUN OF THE MILL URINAL CHAT.

IJ - Wee is a funny word. The Burning Angel movie did well and since then the site and the video production company has really taken off. Most of this credit needs to go to the ladies as they tend to get most of the attention, but the male performers definitely play a part in this too. You all seem really comfortable together both on set and behind the scenes. Are you guys an girls all as tight and friendly together as it seems?

TP - IN A TWISTED WAY WE ARE LIKE FAMILY. A FAMILY THAT BANGS. OK, BAD ANALOGY. BUT, YES WE ARE TIGHT, A LOT OF US LIVE IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD SO WE HANG OUT A LOT.

ACTUALLY A LOT OF THE BRAINSTORMING FOR PLOT IDEAS COMES OUT OF NIGHTS AT THE BAR. I'D SAY THAT IT'S ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE WAYS TO WORK WITH PEOPLE, WHEN THEY KNOW NOT ONLY YOUR PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS, BUT YOUR PERSONALITY AS WELL.

IJ - True. From there you and Joanna did Re-Penetrator, directed by Douglas Sakman who used to work for Troma. There was a fair bit of controversy around this one because of the way that the sex was mixed with the extreme gore, but it definitely found an audience. What kind of feedback did you guys get over this?

TP - INITIALLY I WAS BUMMED BECAUSE ALL OF THE FAKE BLOOD BROKE PORN REGULATIONS AND THE MOVIE WAS BANNED FROM THE INTERNET. BUT IT ENDED UP WORKING IN OUR FAVOR BECAUSE IT GOT PEOPLE TALKING, CREATED A BUZZ. THE REACTIONS USUALLY RANGE FROM LOOKS OF HORROR TO LOOKS OF DISGUST. I HAVE YET TO HEAR SOMEONE SAY, "MAN I BLEW THE BIGGEST LOAD DURING THE REPENETRATOR".

IT'S DEFINITELY NOT YOUR NORMAL PORNO, SO THAT SORT OF REACTION IS EXPECTED. AND, YOU KNOW WHAT, I WOULD RATHER BE KNOWN BY A FEW PEOPLE FOR DOING SOMETHING REALLY DIFFERENT THAN KNOWN BY A BUNCH OF PEOPLE FOR DOING THE SAME TIRED ACT.

IJ - Since then, you and Joanna have worked with Sakman again on the recent XXXorcist. If punk/horror porn is the current wave, what do you, Tommy Pistol, see as being the next revolution in adult entertainment?

TP - TWO WORDS (THIS IS A COPYRIGHTED IDEA SO DON'T STEAL IT AND DON'T THINK I AM RIPPING OFF PETER JACKSON'S MEET THE FEEBLES): PUPPET PORN.

IJ - Once Joanna's star started to rise she signed with VCA and put out the two Joanna's Angels movies, both of which you star in. What was it like going from smaller, independent movies to making porno films for Larry Flynt?

TP - WELL MORE CASH HAS ITS PROS AND CONS. OBVIOUSLY A BIGGER BUDGET HAS ADVANTAGES, THE EQUIPMENT IS MORE SUBSTANTIAL AND THERE'S LESS OF A STRESS ON GETTING IT RIGHT ON THE FIRST TAKE. BUT IT ALSO MEANS STRICTER SCHEDULES AND MORE REGULATIONS. MOST OF WHICH WE END UP IGNORING ANYWAY…

BUT MOSTLY IT'S RAD. I MEAN, FUCK, GETTING SIGNED BY VCA MEANS THAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY INTO WHAT WE'RE DOING. NOT TO MENTION THAT HAVING A DISTRIBUTOR TAKES YOU TO A NEW LEVEL- -OUR WORK IS NOT JUST ON THE INTERNET ANYMORE, IT'S IN STORES, THERE'S ADVERTISING, MUCH MORE NOTORIETY.

IJ - From there, a lot of the Burning Angel crew teamed up with Eon McKai for Neu Wave Hookers, a sort of re-imagining of VCA's classic film from 1985. This film hit pretty big and won a lot of awards. What was it like working on one of the most highly anticipated XXX movies of the time?

TP - SHOOTING IN L.A. HAS A DIFFERENT FEEL FROM THE MORE LOCAL, BROOKLYN SCENES THAT WE DO WITH BURNING ANGEL. THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE, MORE CAMERAS, A BIGGER PRODUCTION. IT CAN MAKE YOU NERVOUS (SOMETHING THAT HAS ADVERSE EFFECTS WHEN YOU'RE A MALE PORN ACTOR). BUT EON REALLY HAS HIS SHIT TOGETHER AND MAKES ME FEEL COMFORTABLE. I RESPECT HIS ABILITY TO MANAGE SUCH BIG PRODUCTIONS.

IJ - On the DVD Maniacs discussion board, your musical number from Neu Wave Hookers is highly regarded. Any plans for more of that?

TP - ONLY IN MY SHOWER.

IJ - Did you and James Deen do all your own dance choreography for that routine or was it scripted? What about the singing?

TP - ALL IMPROV, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT.

IJ - I can't! The Burning Angel crew has also done the two Cum On My Tattoo movies, and it's obvious in this movie and a few others that you've got an Aqua Teen Hunger Force tattoo on your chest, which probably means you're an Adult Swim fan. What else do you watch in your spare time? What kind of movies keep Tommy Pistol entertained?

IJ - FAMILY GUY, OF COURSE. AND MY DIRTY SECRET IS I AM ADDICTED TO BUYING DVD'S. USUALLY THE WORST ONES OUT THERE IF POSSIBLE (HAVE YOU SEEN SHARKMAN? BRILLIANT). I HAVE A THING FOR VAN DAMME MOVIES AND I USUALLY MAKE MY GIRLFRIEND SUFFER THROUGH EVERY CULT HORROR FILM EVER RELEASED.

IJ - We like DVDs here too! What porn films changed your life, and if so, when did you get the feeling of "this is what I want to do"? Further, have you ever seen Waterpower? Or Hardgore? They're popular ones around here.

TP - I'VE NEVER SEEN THOSE ONES, BUT MY "AHA" MOMENT CAME WHILE WATCHING THE ITALIAN STALLION WITH SYLVESTER STALLONE.

IJ - You should check those out. You've been seen doing your own stunts in films like Joanna's Angels 2 but it doesn't always look like you know what you're doing. Any crazy stories about this type of stuff and have you been hurt on set while doing any of these stunts?

TP - IN ACTUALITY I AM A TRAINED STUNT MAN, I WAS CERTIFIED ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO. SO I CAN SET MYSELF ON FIRE, DO HIGH JUMPS, FALL DOWN FLIGHTS OF STAIRS ET CETERA.

BUT RECENTLY I DID GET HURT ON SET. FUNNY STORY ACTUALLY. I WAS DOING A SCENE ON A SOFA (FOR PORNY MONSTERS --THE NEW BURNING ANGEL MOVIE, A SPOOF OF THE FILM WITH MACAULAY CULKIN) AND SOMEHOW MID-THRUST MY FOOT SLIPPED OFF THE COUCH, LANDED THE WRONG WAY AND I ROLLED MY ANKLE. I HEAD THIS LOUD POP AND THOUGHT I'D BROKEN IT.

SO NEXT THING I KNOW I AM CURLED ON THE GROUND IN A FETAL POSITION WITH NOTHING BUT A PAIR OF CHUCK TAYLORS ON, MY POOR COCK 'N BALLS SHRIVELED LIKE I'D SOAKED THEM IN ICE WATER. I COULDN'T DECIDE WHICH WAS MORE EMBARRASSING FOR THE CAMERA TO CATCH, MY WITHERED JOHNSON OR MY HAIRY ASS. SO I SORT OF JUST CRAWLED ON THE FLOOR FOR A FEW MINUTES WHILE PEOPLE STOOD THERE STARING AT ME, NOT SURE WHETHER TO LAUGH OR CALL 911.

BUT REALLY THE WORST OF IT WAS THAT WE WERE SHOOTING A FIVE-PERSON SCENE, SO I LOOK UP FROM THE FLOOR AND THERE ARE THREE GUYS STANDING OVER ME STROKING IT SO THAT THEY WOULDN'T LOSE THEIR HARD-ONS. IT WAS LIKE I WAS THE OREO IN OOKIE COOKIE.

IJ - That's the best story ever. For real. You've mentioned how nutzoid a directorial debut from yourself might be. Any word on what this will be or when it'll happen?

TP - I'M PUTTING IDEAS DOWN ON PAPER, BUT NOTHING IS SOLID YET. I CAN TELL YOU THIS, I TALK TO MYSELF WHEN I'M ALONE, SO IT'LL BE ZANY.

IJ - The way you come into the camera frame on Dave Naz's Skater Girl Fever is classic. Was it your idea to zoom under a girl's ass on a skateboard and start eating her or was the scene scripted that way? And how many takes did it require to get it right on camera?

TP - THAT WAS MY IDEA, I AM ALWAYS TRYING TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT, SOMETHING THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN ON SCREEN BEFORE. DAVE WAS REALLY COOL AND GAVE ME THE FREEDOM TO DO WHAT I WANTED. IT ONLY TOOK A FEW TAKES TO GET IT RIGHT, HE MIGHT HAVE LOST PATIENCE IF I HADN'T NAILED IT RIGHT AWAY.

IJ - You've played a mad scientist, an exorcist, a secret agent and a nerd. What other roles do you think you'd be good for? You should make a XXX martial arts film or a pornographic superhero movie.

TP - BOTH OF THOSE ARE GOOD IDEAS. AT THE MOMENT I AM PREPARING FOR THE NEXT BA FILM, EVIL HEAD, WHERE I AM PLAYING THE ROLE OF THE ASH CHARACTER. THAT OUGHT TO PUT ME IN CULT HORROR HISTORY.

IJ - You could show everyone your boomstick! Have you got any plans to try and break into a mainstream acting career down the road or are you happy working in porno for the time being?

TP - I AM NOT ADVERSE TO IT, MOSTLY I AM CONCERNED WITH WORKING WITH CREATIVE PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO WORK HARD AND PROVIDE A GOOD PRODUCT. I AM REALLY PLEASED TO BE PART OF THIS NEW WAVE OF PORN (ALT I MEAN), THERE IS A LOT OF FLEXIBILITY AND UNCHARTERED TERRAIN WHICH MEANS THAT THOSE OF US INVOLVED HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY SHAPE WHAT'S OUT THERE.

IJ - With the success of Re-Penetrator and XXXorcist are there going to be more porno horror movie parodies down the road from you guys?

TP - ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF MAKING SPOOFS IS THINKING OF THE TITLE. THINK OF YOUR FAVORITE CULT FILM AND STICK A SEX WORD IN THERE. YOU CAN DO IT, JUST GO BACK TO SEVENTH GRADE FOR A SECOND. SO YOU'VE GOT EVIL HEAD, NIGHT OF THE GIVING HEAD, IT GOES ON AND ON.

IJ - Hmm. What about A Nightmare On Boner Street? That would rule! Is it as awkward as it looks trying to have sex while you're getting covered in green slime and goopy effects stuff? Is it hard to keep a straight face while working like this?

TP - TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH THE GUK MADE MY STOMACH TURN. BUT THE FUN OF DOING A SPOOF IS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE.

BUT YES, I DID HAVE TO KEEP REMINDING MYSELF THAT JOANNA IS HOT WHEN NOT COVERED IN GREEN SLUSH.

IJ - Agreed. I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crackers. Or spewing pea soup for that matter. Last question… and it's hardly an original way to close an interview, but what's next on your plate and do you have any advice or anything you want to say to the fans reading this interview?

TP - MY PLATE IS VERY FULL, WORKING ON SOME NEW PROJECTS, WRITING SOME NEW SCRIPTS.

AS FOR ADVICE, IT TOOK ME ABOUT TEN YEARS TO START DOING THIS. I ALWAYS KNEW I WANTED TO WORK IN ENTERTAINMENT AND I JUST KEPT WORKING AT IT UNTIL SOMETHING CAME THROUGH.

DON'T SECOND GUESS YOURSELF OR DWELL WHEN SOMETHING DOESN'T WORK OUT, AND DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY, I NEVER DO. I THINK THAT'S THE BEST ADVICE I CAN OFFER. OH YEAH, AND GET A COCK PUMP.

    And on that note.....
