The Movie:
The sequel to a weak but inoffensive film that at least starred name performers Michelle Rodriguez and Kate Bosworth, BLUE CRUSH 2 is an exhausting mess. At nearly two hours this paper-thin premise becomes the DTV version of the Roman gauntlet - how long can anyone keep their eyes open during this assault?

The focus of this lame story is young surfer chick Dana (Sasha Jackson) who idolizes her long dead mother who was, in a stunning turn of original plotting, an ace at riding the waves. Estranged from her inattentive daddy, Dana heads off on her grand adventure - a trip to the South African beaches her mom wrote about in a journal before her death. There she meets a new best friend, a nasty nemesis with a prom-queen attitude and has to decide between a saintly hunk and a womanizing hunk. And yes there is indeed a big sports competition as the “climax†of this wet noodle of a film. Essentially an “action lite/teen drama/coming-of-age†flick for pre-menopausal girls, BLUE CRUSH 2 makes more edgy teen fare like GOSSIP GIRL look like Billy Shakespeare.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with the “obvious setup†in a sports/coming of age movie (think about how simple the plot of even a classic like ROCKY is) the trick is in the script and the characters. And if you are going to cast girls based solely on their ability to excite teenage male hormones that have almost zero acting ability it's probably a good idea to put some sexy sizzle in the package. Unless you have a fetish for bikini shots (hey, uh, wait a minute!) BC2 cannot even deliver a bare minimum of entertainment value. If you came to this party for a semblance of engaging drama… go home.
The only good thing to be said for this damp squib is that it has some very impressive surfing shots and beautiful location shooting. But I assure you that can find both better surfing movies (POINT BREAK) and location fiestas (PLANET EARTH) if either of those specialties are favorites.
Video/Audio/Extras:
Technically BLUE CRUSH 2 looks really good. The VC-1 1080p encode framed at 1.78:1. Is virtually flawless. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is also excellent and gets a nice workout with all of the pounding music in the film and surf/sound effects.
Extras consist of an alternate Opening (HD; 3:59), deleted Scenes with introduction by the director, a Gag Reel, The Hunt for Waves (HD; 7:42), The Making of Blue Crush 2 (HD; 12:24), Surf Safari! Filming in South Africa (HD; 6:19), Ripping It! Shooting the Surf Scenes (HD; 6:51), and Roxy (this is more of a promo for a clothing company). There is also a really boring commentary track with director Mike Elliott, associate producer Greg Holstein and cast members Sasha Jackson, Elizabeth Mathis and Rodger Halston. The disc is also Dbox and BD-Live Enabled. Some of the extras dealing with the shooting of the film's surfing scenes are mildly interesting but as for the rest of it - forget it.
The Final Word:
BLUE CRUSH 2 is NOT recommended (even for teen girls).
