The Movie:
Carla Gugino plays the title character in this amusing but somewhat disjointed sex comedy about the travails of a recently retired porn star.
Essentially a series of vignettes with some very strong performances (especially from the female performers) ELEKTRA LUXX follows Gugino's adult performer as she tries to figure out what to do with her life following the discovery that she is pregnant by her recently deceased rock star boyfriend (Josh Brolin in brief flashbacks). As she struggles to put her life back together and figure out what to do next she stumbles into a series of ludicrous situations.
The plot is really beside the point with a film like this - the pleasure for the viewer revolves around watching the actors bring the various ridiculous situations here to life. There also are a number of subplots - the funniest of which presents Timothy Olyphant as a private eye hot on the trail of some missing song lyrics by Luxx's deceased ex-boyfriend. Gugino and Olyphant have very nice chemistry together and bring their absurd scenes off beautifully. For anyone with any familiarity with the Adult film world LUXX is laugh-out-loud funny on more than one occasion - Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Bert Rodriguez character as a sex writer/blogger may be one of the most dead-on parodies ever filmed. Sweet, not too bright and completely clueless when it comes to women, his various speeches about matters such as the role of Swedish culture in the sex trade are comedy gold. There are also some subplots involving an appearance by the Virgin Mary (in a cameo by Julianne Moore) and a pair of escorts (Emmanuelle Chriqui and Adrianne Palicki) who are best friends that cannot figure out their relationship.
Video/Audio/Extras:
While the film would certainly have benefited from some sharper editing it remains a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining ride. The dvd looks decent - this is a film with a fairly “soft†look overall so don't expect anything too mind-blowing visually. Audio is a serviceable 5.1 Dolby Digital track. As far as extras go, there are a couple of mildly interesting deleted scenes and that's it.Posting comments is disabled.
