The Movie:
Essentially a mix of “urban†thriller and Lifetime-movie-of-the-week style chick-flick melodrama, N-SECURE is a real treat for fans of loopy cinema. Overheated is the operative term here.
Businessman David Alan Washington (Tyler Perry stage veteran Cordell Moore) is one truly twisted piece of work. Convinced every woman is a money-grubbing ho this charmer is a control freak of terrifying proportions. The movie opens with his current girlfriend (Essence Atkins) going through one humiliating experience after another. David is convinced that every women he is involved with is cheating on him so he tracks their every movement. Being 2 minutes late is cause for a nasty speech about “respect†and every move is analyzed in David's twisted hunt for “evidence†of cheating. The rest of the film revolves around his failed relationships and what he does to the people he believes have “wronged†him.
Now the natural question that anyone would ask is: why would a woman put up with this creep? Because he's rich of course - filthy stinking rich.
What makes N-SECURE so ridiculously entertaining is the fact that it is so wrongheaded on so many levels. We are supposed to sympathize with the poor women that David is abusing but because they are such sleazy gold-diggers it's practically impossible. None of these women seem to work at all - and on top of that one of the main plot points is how the first girlfriend (who ends up trying to have sex with her best friend's boyfriend THE DAY BEFORE THE WEDDING!) is trying to prove David's paternity. So she is both a money-grubber AND a woman that wants to get pregnant for all the wrong reasons.
Of course, Moore's character is so utterly despicable that we end up rooting for this shameless woman anyway. The real show here however is the choice dialog (David's “I would prefer a man put his penis in my mouth than stick it in my woman†line is surely destined for some kind of hall of fame) and Cordell's histrionic performance. His theatrical delivery combined with his coiled-snake intensity mark the man as a master of over-the-top-villainy.
The female performers are adequate and mostly drop-dead gorgeous so male viewers should have no problem staying engaged through some of the more “sisterhood†scenes in here. Another nice touch is that the film manages to show a less stereotypical African-American experience. This is a movie about rich, successful professionals where characters lunch at 5-star restaurants and work in expensive offices (except for the money-grubbing girls of course - they just don't work).
N-SECURE is a solid example of the “good†bad film. See it for Cordell Moore alone and hope the man gets many more jobs in the future.
Video/Audio/Extras:
As would be expected of a recent film, N-SECURE looks pretty damn good. The 1080p AVC encode has solid black levels and no flaws to speak of. Audio wise, we have a perfectly good 5.1 DTS-HD track. Don't expect anything all that exciting though - TERMINATOR 2 this is not. Extras consist solely of a brief making-of featurette of limited interest.Posting comments is disabled.
