The Movie:
Also known as Boiling Point (which is what the superimposed video title at the beginning of the feature reads) director Paul Levis' 1978 film is an interesting mix of action, comedy and the typical sexy shenanigans you expect from seventies XXX filmmaking. The movie follows a San Francisco hooker named Angel (played by lovely redhead Phaedra Grant). When we first meet her she's walking across the street while some dude sings 'city girl, you so busy, oh city girl' (the music is credited to Nubar Zozaya) on the soundtrack. She heads home and has a drink before having phone sex with John Seeman who watches her through the French doors in her abode. From there heads to the store where she gets caught up in a robbery. One thing leads to another and she gets stuck in the back of a cop car (driven by John Leslie) and winds up on a high speed chase complete with car crashes, boss instrumental music and random blowjobs! At one point a motorcyclist flies off of his ride and crashes through the window of a house only to land on top of a couple who are in the middle of some alone time.
After the chase, Phaedra heads back to Leslie's pad where they drink some scotch and get it on. Look for a weird embroidered pillow on the bed that features an image of a woman who looks kind of like Seka. What the Hell? At any rate, later on some more people have sex and Phaedra and Leslie smoke some weed in bed together. The guy who robbed the store (Jon Martin credited as Jerry Smith) is running around boffing and smoking cigarettes with a teenager who is busy baby sitting before moving on to screwing around with John Leslie's wife! At one point a woman (Paula Brown) dances around her house for no apparent reason and fantasizes about being on a merry-go-round only to be interrupted by a random visit from her lesbian lover, played by Lisa Sue Corey (credited as Sylvia Rodgers). They go at it on top of some stylish gold bed sheets and then go at it again in a dark room with mirrored walls where they dance naked together in some sort of really crappy ballet.
From here, for reasons that are known only to whoever wrote this thing, the action switches to a discothí¨que inhabited by topless women, inflatable sex dolls, and a band lead by a black dude in Paul Stanley make up! As the wannabe Kiss guys (who sound more like KC And The Sunshine Band and who are credited in the film as The Filthy Four!) rock on, John Leslie shows off his dance moves as does pretty much everyone else in the cast. At this point, all the guys line up with their dicks out and move towards the ladies, who are on their knees, in some sort of choreographed blowjob boogie while bubbles fall from the ceiling. An orgy breaks out, the dry ice machine kicks into overdrive, the end. Cue up the 'City Girl' song from the beginning and role the end credits!
The opening car chase is actually pretty impressive considering this is a low budget smut movie and the sex is plentiful and reasonably well shot. The movie benefits from an interesting cast (Desiree Cousteau pops up in the orgy scene) and some fun performances courtesy of Phaedra Grant and John Leslie. The film makes sense for the first half but once the action moves to the disco, what's happening is really anyone's guess. As ridiculous as it all is, it's plenty entertaining, and the San Francisco settings definitely give the movie some interesting backgrounds. Despite the fact that the ending comes completely out of left field, the camera work in the movie is much better than average and really, the head-scratcher of a disco dancing blowjob ending just adds to the movie's erratic (rather than erotic) charm.
Video/Audio/Extras:
The full frame video transfer is not in the best of shape but it is watchable. Print damage is prevalent from start to finish and there are some pretty big scratches on the image as well as some mild compression artifacts in the opening scene. The reds look washed out and blurry in some scenes, specifically during the big finale. Not a great transfer, but again, it's watchable.
The English language Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack is audible despite some warble here and there. You can understand everyone without having to strain, but a bit of background hiss pops in here and again and the echo/reverb is irritating.
Aside from the static menu screen and chapter selection option, Alpha Blue Archives have supplied trailers for Breaker Beauties (big rig trucker porn complete with musical numbers!!!) Fred J. Lincoln's A Place Beyond Shame starring Seka, The Sexorcist, Roberta Findlay's A Woman's Torment, and Midnight Hustle.
The Final Word:
Fans of off the wall seventies porn ought to give this one a shot just for the completely bizarre finale. Alpha Blue's presentation isn't going to win any awards but it's currently the only version out there and the movie is definitely worth checking out.
